Graphical Selective and stable Fe : Selective catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran over heterogeneous Fe catalysts is demonstrated in batch and continuous flow fixed-bed reactors. The Fe catalyst exhibited excellent stability, which is probably a result of the well-preserved active species and the pore structure of the Fe catalyst in the presence of H 2 . This work provided the first example of selective hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) over heterogeneous Fe catalysts. A catalyst prepared by the pyrolysis of an Fe-phenanthroline complex on activated carbon at 800 °C was demonstrated to be the most active heterogeneous Fe catalyst. Under the optimal reaction conditions, complete conversion of HMF was achieved with 86.2 % selectivity to DMF. The reaction pathway was investigated thoroughly, and the hydrogenation of the C=O bond in HMF was demonstrated to be the rate-determining step during the hydrodeoxygenation, which could be accelerated greatly by using alcohol solvents as additional H-donors. The excellent stability of the Fe catalyst, which was probably a result of the well-preserved active species and the pore structure of the Fe catalyst in the presence of H 2 , was demonstrated in batch and continuous flow fixed-bed reactors.

One pair of novel enantiomers, gigantdioxin A (+)-1and B (−)-1, with a skeleton of benzo[d][1,3]dioxin; a new acetophenone gigantone A (3); a known 3-chlorogentisyl alcohol (2), which is the bioprecursor of1; acetophenone (4); and chromone derivative (5) were obtained from the sponge-associated fungusAspergillus giganteusMA46-5. Their structures were established by extensive and in-depth spectral analysis, such as UV, 1D and 2D NMR, and HRESIMS. The absolute configurations of (±)-1were deduced by ORD, chiral separation, and experimental and computational ECD. Meanwhile, we proposed a possible biosynthetic pathway of (±)-1. Fortunately, the pathway was proved by biomimetic synthesis through2, as a bioprecursor, reacted withn-butyraldehyde. Myocardial protection assays showed that3and4possessed stronger protective effects than a positive control against myocardial cell H9c2 ischemia–reperfusion injury in low concentrations, and the effect of (−)-1was almost equal to that of the positive control. Further, we explored the possible mechanism of myocardial protection through network pharmacology. Adenosine A2a receptor (ADORA2A) and serum albumin (ALB) represent potential targets for myocardial protection associated with (−)-1and4, respectively. Based on the network pharmacology, we docked the predicted proteins with bioactive compounds using Autodock Vina.

This study discovered a natural flavonoid stabilizer for stabilizing 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) since the instability of 5-MTHF affects the accurate determination of 5-MTHF. The optimal stabilizer was selected from six flavonoid compounds, comparing the differences between natural stabilizers and traditional stabilizers and studying the parameters of the stabilizing 5-MTHF solution. In addition, the stabilizing effect of the stabilizer on 5-MTHF was evaluated under optimal parameters under various environmental conditions. Differences in the methods with and without naringenin were compared. The concentrations of 5-MTHF were analyzed using validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and percentage deviation characterized the stability. The results indicated that naringenin had a better stabilizing effect on 5-MTHF compared to dithiothreitol, similar to l-ascorbic acid, maintaining the stability of 5-MTHF under different conditions. Naringenin had no adverse effect on the stability of other metabolites. In conclusion, naringenin improved the stability of 5-MTHF, ensuring its stability during the storage and detection processes.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disorder that lacks a validated and effective therapy. Thus, further investigation of the pathogenesis of PAH will help explore novel treatments. The increase in T helper 17 (Th17) cell-mediated pro-inflammatory response and reduction of regulatory T (Treg) cell-mediated anti-inflammatory effect exacerbates PAH progression. Increasing evidence indicates that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is closely related to Th17 and Treg polarization. Here, a decrease of 5-HT was found in hypoxia-induced CD4 + T cells. Hypoxia also resulted in a reduction in Treg cells and an increase in Th17 cells, but the addition of 5-HT rescued Th17/Treg balance, confirming that hypoxia destroyed Th17/Treg balance by inducing a 5-HT decrease. Furthermore, we found that 5-HT-restored Th17/Treg balance mitigated primary pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation, migration, and contraction, which are important factors in vascular remodeling in PAH. In summary, our findings demonstrate that hypoxia-induced 5-HT decline interferes with the balance of Th17/Treg, which affects the biofunction of PASMCs, thus accelerating PAH development. 5-HT-mediated Th17/Treg balance is expected to act as a novel immunotherapy for PAH treatment.

The electrochemical catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to generate high-value products like 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has become a prominent research interest. In this work, an economical and efficient transition metal ε-MnO2 catalyst was used to electrocatalyze the oxidation of HMF in acidic environments. The results revealed a highly efficient HMF conversion rate of 92.95% and a FDCA yield of 23.03% under the specific conditions of 60 °C, 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.6 V (vs. RHE). Furthermore, the study outlined the oxidation pathway for HMF, which progresses through the following sequence: HMF → DFF → FFCA → FDCA. The apparent activation energies associated with each oxidation stage were found to be 25.52, 22.12 and 16.21 kJ mol−1, respectively. Moreover, the findings indicated a favorable relationship between the electrocatalytic oxidation activity of HMF and the average surface oxidation state of ε-MnO2.

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), as an important monomer to produce biodegradable polymers, is a hot compound in the field of electrocatalysis. Designing high-activity and low-cost electrocatalysts for the production of high concentration FDCA is an urgent and challenging task. Here, a cactus-like NiCoP nanoplate was prepared as a robust electrocatalyst to enable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation to FDCA at high concentration. In situ Raman spectroelectrochemical analysis investigated the dynamic structural evolution of the NiCoP surface during the electrooxidation of HMF. The substituted Co atoms make the NiOOH active species easier to form on the NiCoP surface than Ni2P at low constant voltage, which promotes the oxidation of HMF into FDCA. The total potential of coupling the cathodic H2 reduction reaction with the anodic HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) is only 1.464 V when NiCoP is the electrode material. The design of the flow-through mode reactor optimized the mass transfer process in the reaction, and further improved the coupling efficiency. The conversion rate of HMF and yield of FDCA reach 98.7% and 98.8%, respectively, even when the concentration of HMF is as high as 300 mM.

6-(4-Aminophenyl)-5-methyl-4,5-dihydro-3(2H)-pyridazinone is a key synthetic intermediate for cardiotonic agent levosimendan. Very few studies address the use of chiral stationary phases in chromatography for the enantioseparation of this intermediate. This study presents two efficient preparative methods for the isolation of ( R )(−)-6-(4-aminophenyl)-5-methyl-4,5-dihydro-3(2H)-pyridazinone in polar organic solvent chromatography and supercritical fluid chromatography using polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases and volatile organic mobile phases without additives in isocratic mode. Under optimum conditions, Chiralcel OJ column showed the best performance ( α = 1.71, Rs = 5.47) in polar organic solvent chromatography, while Chiralpak AS column exhibited remarkable separations ( α = 1.81 and Rs = 6.51) in supercritical fluid chromatography with an opposite enantiomer elution order. Considering the sample solubility, runtime and solvent cost, the preparations were carried out on Chiralcel OJ column and Chiralpak AS column (250 × 20 mm i.d.; 10 µm) in polar organic mode and supercritical fluid chromatography mode with methanol and CO 2 /methanol as mobile phases, respectively. By utilizing the advantages of chromatographic techniques and polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases, this work provides two methods for the fast and economic preparation of ( R )(−)-6-(4-aminophenyl)-5-methyl-4,5-dihydro-3(2H)-pyridazinone, which are suitable for the pharmaceutical industry.

Herein, a specific core–shell MFI zeolite was designed for the methanol to propylene (MTP) reaction. The core–shell structure of Al-ZSM-5@B-ZSM-5 and Al-ZSM-5@silicalite-1 were easily obtained via a two-step procedure, in which Al-ZSM-5 aggregate acted as the core and B-ZSM-5 or silicalite-1 as the shell. Their core–shell structures, acidity distribution and pore properties were characterized systemically, and new insights were gained into the synergetic effect of acid property and diffusion on the MTP reaction. The Al-ZSM-5@B-ZSM-5 zeolite exhibited a superior catalytic performance with a lifetime of 350 h (WHSV = 3 h−1), propylene selectivity of 49% and high turnover number of 4.3 × 106, while for the Al-ZSM-5 core, the corresponding values were 210 h, 43% and 5.2 × 105, respectively. Al-ZSM-5@silicalite-1 displayed the second best performance with the values of 250 h, 45% and 2.9 × 106, respectively. Gradient strong acid reduction from the core to the shell via the epitaxial growth of the silicalite-1 or B-ZSM-5 shell combined with an appropriate strong/weak acid ratio plays a vital role in inhibiting the hydrogen transfer reaction and thus gives a low consumption of propylene and low coke deposition. For the hydrogen transfer reaction of alkenes to form alkanes and aromatics, strong acid sites are required. Moreover, the acid sites originally existing on the external surface of the Al-ZSM-5 core were converted into internal acid sites due to the formation of an interface zone in the core–shell zeolite, possessing micropore characteristics, which in turn improve the shape selectivity and suppress coke deposition. Especially, the Al-ZSM-5@B-ZSM-5 zeolite displayed more weak acid sites and few strong acid sites on its shell surface, which are beneficial for the low formation of external coke and also account for the highest utilization of acid sites in the MTP reaction, high propylene selectivity and long lifetime.

Three kinds of silicotungstate, Zn2SiW12O40, Ag4SiW12O40 and Al4/3SiW12O40 were performed for the dehydration reaction to produce valuable platform chemicals levulinic acid
(LA) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from glucose. The results showed that Al4/3SiW12O40 seemed beneficial for LA and HMF production from glucose. The highest LA yield of 50.4% was obtained when the glucose conversion was almost 100% at 180 °C
for 120 min with glucose was 0.5 g and the catalyst dosage was 0.45 g. The recycling of Al4/3SiW12O40 catalyst can be reused at least for four times with the activity loss less than 18.4% and the SEM images showed that the activity loss less may
due to the formation of the clustered fine particles on catalyst surface. This work provided a promising strategy for the production of LA from carbohydrates using inexpensive silicotungstate catalysts in aqueous medium.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) as emerging porous materials have attracted remarkable attention for their unprecedented porosity and acidic sensitive degradation that enables high drug loading and microenvironment responsive fast payload release. However, the limited functions and disadvantages of ZIFs such as early drug release, potential cytotoxicity inducing damage to major organs, and even death of animals, impede their further biomedical application. In this work, we report the first tandem post-synthetic modification of ZIF-7 with both metal ions and organic ligands. Inspired by the benzimidazole-like inhibitors that are similar to the organic ligand of ZIF-7, a chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4 (CXCR4) inhibitor AMD-070 (AMD) and magnesium ions (Mn2+) were successfully tandem exchanged to the ZIF-7 framework, forming an active-targeting framework AMD-ZIF-7(Mn) for CXCR4-overexpressed esophageal squamous cell cancer. The obtained AMD-ZIF-7(Mn) showed good biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. Meanwhile, it exhibited an excellent T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging performance and CXCR4 targeting ability. With 5-Fu loading, AMD-ZIF-7(Mn)/5-Fu showed a synergistic therapeutic effect in DNA damage and CXCR4 inhibition of esophageal squamous cell cancer. Therefore, we propose a structural reconstruction method to effectively explore and improve the biomedical application of ZIFs in esophageal squamous cell cancer theranostics.

Delayed treatment of insomnia-related symptoms can harm physical health and increase the psychological burden. In addition to oral medications and some physical therapies, aromatherapy can help overcome some treatment-related side effects. Herein, parachlorophenylalanine (PCPA)-induced insomnia was established in Kunming (KM) mice, which were subjected to aromatherapy using five plants ( Jasminum sambac , Magnolia denudata , Rosa rugosa , Aloysia citriodora , and Abies balsamea ) essential oils (EOs). To determine the sleep-inducing effect of the five EOs, the rate of change in body weight, sleep latency, and total sleep time in mice were measured. Specific serum indices were used to evaluate the therapeutic effects of the tested drugs and PCPA modeling. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to identify active components in EOs. The five EOs contained multiple identical constituents and were rich in terpenoids, such as α-farnesene (28.42%), linalool (68.84%), and citronellol (23.78%). The EOs exhibiting varying effects on insomnia-induced weight loss. Nissl staining was used to examine and the number of neurons was elevated in the EO-treated groups when compared with the PCPA-induced group; however, the neuronal number was reduced in the hypothalamic tissues of the R. rugosa EO (RREO)-treated group. All EOs upregulated the expression of 5-HT1A and GABA A Rα1, as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry, western blotting, and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR results. In addition, EOs of A. citriodora and A. balsamea significantly upregulated the expression of 5HT 1A protein, whereas EOs of J. sambac and M. denudata exerted significantly different effects when compared with the model group, as determined by western blotting.

Fe-doped zeolites with Mobil Five (MFI) structure have been widely used as heterogeneous Fenton catalysts to eliminate dyes from wastewater. However, the influence of carriers on degradation efficiency has not been reported yet. In this work, we have prepared three Fe-doped zeolite catalysts, FeS-1, FeZSM-5, and FeTS-1, with silicalite-1 (S-1), zeolite socony mobil-5 (ZSM-5), and titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) as carriers, respectively. Characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy-disperse X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, zeta potential, and N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, were used to investigate the morphologies and physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials. The catalytic performances of all zeolite catalysts were evaluated in the degradation experiments. The results depicted that the degradation efficiency of FeZSM-5 was higher than that of FeS-1 and FeTS-1 owing to its higher hydrophilic property, larger external specific surface area, and more negative zeta potential value. Therefore, the ZSM-5 could be a more suitable solid matrix for heterogeneous Fenton reactions than S-1 and TS-1.
