pH-Responsive Chitosan-based Films Incorporated with ZIF-8@ Dihydromyricetin Nanoparticles for Enhanced Grape Preservation

Yilin Han,Xianxuan Li,Lingwan Zhang,Kai Zhong,Yanping Wu,Hong Gao

The development of active packaging with sustained antimicrobial and antioxidant functions is crucial for extending the shelf life of highly perishable fruits. In this study, we developed a novel composite film by incorporating dihydromyricetin (DMY)-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles into a chitosan (CS) matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the good compatibility between ZIF-8@DMY and the chitosan matrix at optimal loadings (2.5–15wt%). Importantly, the incorporation of ZIF-8@DMY significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite films, increasing tensile strength by approximately 4.8-fold (from 1.77 to 8.50 MPa). Concurrently, critical physical properties including water vapor permeability, hydrophilicity and UV-vis transmittance were also enhanced. The composite films exhibited intelligent pH-responsive release of DMY. Furthermore, the ZIF-8@DMY/CS films exhibited potent in vitro antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , with the 5% ZIF-8@DMY/CS film reducing E. coli counts by 5.38 log CFU/mL. In the grape preservation test, the 5% ZIF-8@DMY/CS film effectively mitigated weight loss and retained higher levels of total soluble solids (TSS) and ascorbic acid (V C ) over10 days of cold storage. These findings highlight that ZIF-8@DMY/CS composite films are a promising smart active packaging material for preserving the postharvest quality of fresh produce.

Synthesis of Confined HPW@ZIF-8 for Ambient Catalytic Oxidation of Aromatic Sulfides in Diesel

Lai Wei,Zhendong Yu,Haofeng Wu,Xiaoxiao Xing,Yiru Zou,Limin Song,Peiwen Wu,Minmeng Tang,Xiaoxiao Yu,Wenshuai Zhu

The catalytic oxidation of aromatic sulfides under mild, ambient conditions facilitates the high-value utilization of diesel fuel, free from external heating sources. Herein, a high-performance confined catalyst through a simple one-pot method is developed, denoted as HPW@ZIF-8. The phosphotungstic acid is encapsulated and confined within the pores of the ZIF-8 framework, achieving ambient temperature catalytic oxidation of aromatic sulfides to high-value sulfones. The induced charge shift in the confined catalysis is observed, as the weak interaction force between the phosphorus-tungsten structure and Zn center, strengthening the catalytic oxidation performance. Under unheated conditions, the hydrogen peroxide utilization rate and activity of the catalyst at ambient temperature are both greater than 97.0%. In addition, the confined catalysts exhibit good cycling performance after 10 cycles, attributed to the highly matched host and guest, with only 0.2% HPW loss. Above all, this work offers new insights for the green, low-energy consumption, and high-value utilization of diesel fuel. Graphical Constructing confined catalytic materials by encapsulating active centers in the cavities of ZIF-8 metal-organic frameworks. This strategy enables the efficient catalytic oxidation of sulfur-containing compounds in diesel to high-value sulfone products at ambient temperatures. This produces ultra-low diesel with a sulfur content of less than 10 mg/L.

Targeted Delivery of Dimethyl Malonate via a ZIF-8-Based Nanocarrier for Ischemic Stroke Treatment

Xuefei Li,Tao Tao,Yu Feng,Yonghou Zhao,Jianbo Chai,Bing Zhang

To combat microglia-induced neuroinflammation after ischemic stroke, this study developed an intelligent nanodrug delivery system named DZIF@HA. The platform employs a ZIF-8 carrier to load the metabolic drug dimethyl malonate (DM), which is further functionalized with the AIRA peptide and hyaluronic acid for targeted delivery to inflamed microglial cells in the brain. Leveraging its pH-responsive properties, DZIF@HA achieves controlled drug release at the acidic lesion site, facilitating the shift of microglia from the pro-inflammatory M1 to the neuroprotective M2 phenotype. Experimental results demonstrate that this strategy successfully alleviates neuroinflammation, reduces infarct size, and promotes the recovery of neurological function, with a high safety profile, offering avenue for stroke treatment.

Effective ethylene capture by hydrophobically engineered core-shell Cu-BTC@ZIF-8 for postharvest preservation

Zhihan Hu,Tong Wang,Huimeng Feng,Zhipeng Zhao,Xiao Sun,Shougang Chen

Core-shell Cu-BTC@ZIF-8 enhanced hydrophobicity without sacrificing ethylene adsorption. • ZIF-8 shell provided water blocking while enabling ethylene transport. • HMDS/PDMS integration improved water resistance, filler dispersion and membrane processability. • Active packaging membrane with ethylene-scavenging, antibacterial activity, and improved water stability. Ethylene accelerates postharvest ripening and quality loss of fruits and vegetables even at ppm levels. Copper-based MOFs, such as Cu-BTC, can capture olefins via open metal sites (OMS) through π-complexation, yet water sensitivity and powder form limit their use in humid, air-based transport. Here, we report an ethylene-scavenging composite membrane developed through a processable material-design strategy involving structural protection, surface engineering, and membrane integration. A ZIF-8 shell is grown in situ on Cu-BTC to form a microporous protective interface that suppresses water ingress and mitigates water-induced OMS deactivation, while its known aperture flexibility associated with 2-methylimidazolate linker motion is incorporated into the design to maintain ethylene transport through the shell under humid air. In air at 25 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5% RH, Cu-BTC@ZIF-8 exhibited an ethylene uptake of 35.97 cm 3 (STP) g −1 over 72 h, exceeding pristine Cu-BTC. An ultrathin HMDS-derived siloxane layer was subsequently introduced, and the particles were embedded in PDMS to further improve water resistance and convert the powder adsorbent into a processable membrane form with improved engineering applicability. In an 80 L sealed chamber under real air, the Cu-BTC@ZIF-8 + HMDS|PDMS membrane showed an ethylene removal capacity of 34.71 cm 3 (STP) g −1 over 72 h based on MOF mass and retained approximately 80% of its initial performance after ten 72 h cycles. In a 10-day banana storage experiment at 25 ± 2 °C, the composite membrane delayed visible browning by 3–4 days compared with blank and pure PDMS controls and showed inhibitory activity against E. coli and S. aureus . This work proposes a feasible material-oriented strategy to enhance the water resistance and processability of Cu-BTC-based MOF materials, while avoiding compromising ethylene adsorption performance under real-air conditions.

Thermodynamic Selectivity and Kinetic Control in the Encapsulation of Spiropyran Derivatives by Cucurbit[8]uril

Yinghui Niu,Fengbiao Chen,Xinru Guo,Yinjun Chen,Jin Wen,Meifang Zhu

Spiropyrans (SPs) are promising building blocks for stimuli-responsive delivery because of their sensitivity to pH, light, and heat. However, their intrinsic hydrophobicity and limited stability in aqueous media severely restrict practical use under physiological conditions. Here, to overcome this aqueous-compatibility bottleneck, we propose a host-guest-guided design and screening strategy that integrates thermodynamic binding analysis with kinetic assessment, followed by experimental validation, to identify effective supramolecular complexes for controlled loading/release in water. Using cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and three spiropyran derivatives (SP1–3) with their merocyanine isomers (MC1–3) as a model system, we first quantify host-guest recognition from a thermodynamic perspective by density functional theory. We then resolve stimulus-coupled loading/release kinetics by explicit-solvent umbrella sampling, yielding potential of mean force profiles that reveal a pronounced size-dependent kinetic-gating mechanism: MC1–2 display an entry–retention behavior consistent with efficient loading and high kinetic retention, while the bulkier SP3/MC3 is sterically restricted and favors a shallow capping mode with limited encapsulation and faster escape. ¹H NMR and time-resolved UV-Vis measurements further verify the strong host-guest interactions and the host-modulated isomerization kinetics, in close agreement with the differentiated confinement regimes predicted by simulation. Beyond CB[8], comparative simulations indicate that γ-cyclodextrin provides a more accommodating cavity environment for SP2. Overall, this work demonstrates a generalizable theory-to-experiment workflow that couples thermodynamic and kinetic criteria to rationally select host-guest pairs, offering a transferable framework for designing low-leakage, multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular delivery and controlled-release platforms.

Forest Fire Monitoring and Positioning Improvement at Subpixel Level: Application to Himawari-8 Fire Products

Haizhou Xu,Gui Zhang,Zhaoming Zhou,Xiaobing Zhou,Cui Zhou

Forest fires are among the biggest threats to forest ecosystems and forest resources, and can lead to ecological disasters and social crises. Therefore, it is imperative to detect and extinguish forest fires in time to reduce their negative impacts. Satellite remote sensing, especially meteorological satellites, has been a useful tool for forest-fire detection and monitoring because of its high temporal resolution over large areas. Researchers monitor forest fires directly at pixel level, which usually presents a mixture of forest and fire, but the low spatial resolution of such mixed pixels cannot accurately locate the exact position of the fire, and the optimal time window for fire suppression can thus be missed. In order to improve the positioning accuracy of the origin of forest fire (OriFF), we proposed a mixed-pixel unmixing integrated with pixel-swapping algorithm (MPU-PSA) model to monitor the OriFFs in time. We then applied the model to the Japanese Himawari-8 Geostationary Meteorological Satellite data to obtain forest-fire products at subpixel level. In this study, the ground truth data were provided by the Department of Emergency Management of Hunan Province, China. To validate the positioning accuracy of MPU-PSA for OriFFs, we applied the model to the Himawari-8 satellite data and then compared the derived fire results with fifteen reference forest-fire events that occurred in Hunan Province, China. The results show that the extracted forest-fire locations using the proposed method, referred to as forest fire locations at subpixel (FFLS) level, were far closer to the actual OriFFs than those from the modified Himawari-8 Wild Fire Product (M-HWFP). This improvement will help to reduce false fire claims in the Himawari-8 Wild Fire Product (HWFP). We conducted a comparative study of M-HWFP and FFLS products using three accuracy-evaluation indexes, i.e., Euclidean distance, RMSE, and MAE. The mean distances between M-HWFP fire locations and OriFFs and between FFLS fire locations and OriFFs were 3362.21 m and 1294.00 m, respectively. The mean RMSEs of the M-HWFP and FFLS products are 1225.52 m and 474.93 m, respectively. The mean MAEs of the M-HWFP and FFLS products are 992.12 m and 387.13 m, respectively. We concluded that the newly proposed MPU-PSA method can extract forest-fire locations at subpixel level, providing higher positioning accuracy of forest fires for their suppression.

Curcumin/Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanoparticle-Integrated Microneedles for pH-Responsive Treatment of Skin Disorders

Seojin Jung,Seokhee Chang,Na-Eun Kim,Seong-O Choi,Yoon-Jae Song,Yue Yuan,Jooyoun Kim

A feasible strategy of on-demand drug delivery for the treatment of dermal inflammation under low-pH conditions is proposed, employing zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a pH-responsive nanoparticle and curcumin (CCM) as a model drug. To overcome the low bioavailability of topically treated drug, a microneedle (MN) form is used to incorporate CCM and ZIF-8. Taking advantage of the fact that ZIF-8 degrades under acidic conditions, CCM is embedded in porous ZIF-8 nanoparticles such that CCM is released when ZIF-8 comes into contact with an acidic dermal fluid at the inflammation site, and this CCM-encapsulated ZIF-8 (CCMZIF) is incorporated into water-dissolvable poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) MN. The ZIF-8 shows a high loading capacity (∼40.5%) of CCM through chemical bonding and physical adsorption. From in vitro tests with both a buffered solution and porcine skin, CCM from the CCMZIF MN is released in a higher amount at pH 5.0 than at pH 7.4, demonstrating the capability of the pH-responsive release of the drug when needed at inflammatory sites. The analytical investigation conducted here reveals that an acidic environment triggers the structural degradation of ZIF-8, allowing the release of the chemically bonded CCM. Cytotoxicity and stability tests demonstrate the good biocompatibility and bioavailability of ZIF-8. This study highlights the analytical discussion of the encapsulation and release mechanism of CCM in a ZIF-8-implemented MN drug delivery platform. The results demonstrate an advanced on-demand therapeutic strategy for skin disorder treatment.

ZIF-8 modified graphene oxide/sodium alginate 3D elastic spheres for uranium trapping in seawater

Xue Chang,PeiZhuo Hu,Huiling Liu,Zixiao Lv,Jingyi Yang,Jianli Wang,Zhan Li,Lijuan Qian,Wangsuo Wu

Due to the popularization of nuclear energy and the application of nuclear technology , there is an increasing demand for uranium resources. Extraction of uranium from seawater has become a hot topic. To achieve uranium capture, a three-dimensional carbon structure material (GO/ZIF-8@SA) with ionic stress elastic expansion consisting of graphene oxide, ZIF-8 and sodium alginate was developed. Surface morphological characteristics and elemental composition evaluation were determined by using SEM. The doping concentration of the elements in the synthesized products was measured by EDS. XRD, FT-IR and XPS confirmed the successful doping of ZIF-8. In seawater spiked with uranium, GO/ZIF-8@SA showed not only an ultra-high adsorption capacity of 1897 mg·g −1 for U(VI), but also a high selectivity . Interestingly, the volume of GO/ZIF-8@SA can be elastically expanded with the adsorption of U(VI). The expanded microspheres can be directly captured from the seawater by the mesh sieve. GO/ZIF-8@SA solves the problem of balancing adsorption capacity and selectivity in a complex seawater environment, which gives it great potential for application in seawater uranium extraction.

Micro/nanostructured ZIF-8/CeO2 composite as an efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2

Hu Lihua,Chen Li,Mo Xiaohong,Peng Xiong,Xu Wei,Liu Feng,Yan Zongcheng

For the effective utilization of carbon resources, a facile and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst system with high reactivity and stability is urgently needed for chemical fixation of CO 2 . Herein, a micro/nanostructured ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite was designed by direct surface-nucleated ZIF-8 nanoparticles on spindle-like CeO 2 . The ZIF-8 nanoparticles content of the ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite could be tuned by the changing of reaction parameters, such as the molar ratio of reactants and the reaction time. The ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite exhibits remarkably enhanced catalytic activity and superior reusability for cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 and epoxide than its pure substance. The enhanced performance of ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite should be attributed to its high specific surface area and abundant porosity, outstanding thermal stability, and the appearance of a new moderate acid/base site in composite material. Considering the convenient preparation, enhanced catalytic activity and excellent reusability of ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite, this work offers a new strategy to replace ZIFs-based porous catalysts for chemical fixation of CO 2 .

Phenolic resin regulated interface of ZIF-8 based mixed matrix membrane for enhanced gas separation

Ke Chen,Linhan Ni,Hao Zhang,Li Li,Xin Guo,Junwen Qi,Yujun Zhou,Zhigao Zhu,Xiuyun Sun,Jiansheng Li

The performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is significantly determined by the inherent structure and composition of incorporated nanofillers. In this work, the core-shell ZIF-8@RF nanofillers were prepared through a kinetically-controlled growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde (RF), followed by being incorporated into the glassy 6FDA-Durene and rubbery Pebax 1657 via a physical blending approach to form MMMs. Benefiting from the enhanced interfacial compatibility, CO 2 affinity, and the intrinsic characteristics of porous ZIF-8, the resultant MMMs demonstrated outstanding performance for CO 2 /CH 4 separation. The CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the ZIF-8@RF/6FDA-Durene (ZIF-8@RF/Pebax 1657) MMMs increased up to 1332.1/363 Barrer and 28.6/29.6, corresponding to an improvement of 65.4/116.3% of the CO 2 permeability and 49.7/53.4% of the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity compared to the pristine membrane. Meanwhile, CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of ZIF-8@RF MMMs increases by up to 33.0% and 28.1% in comparison to the ZIF-8 without RF layer MMMs, respectively. More importantly, both MMMs can maintain their extraordinary separation performance after stabilized in the existence of moisture. These results demonstrate that the separation performance of the MMMs was remarkably improved with the addition of ZIF-8@RF.

Smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating based on halloysite nanotubes carrying 8-hydroxyquinoline on steel

Chengbao Liu,Peimin Hou,Bei Qian,Xiaoping Hu

Integrating healable and reportable ability to sustain new-generation smart anticorrosion coatings with long-term durability is highly desirable to accommodate the development of marine industries. Herein, a new type of dual-function coating is designed to fulfill the needs. Through introducing the smart nanocontainers based on the core of HNTs loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) and the shell made from sodium tripolyphosphate-chitosan (CS) into conventional epoxy matrix, the smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating on carbon steel (Q235) was developed. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray measurement indicated the corrosion inhibition effect of the nanocontainers and healable performance of composite coatings. Benefitting from the 8HQ, the designed waterborne epoxy coating displayed higher low-frequency modulus after 60 days of immersion, confirming the long-term protection ability. Besides, the composite coating exhibited obvious dark-green color at damaged region to timely sense and report the local corrosion in 30 min of immersion tests. This smart coating with sensitive corrosion visualization and well-performed healable properties holds great potential in actual anticorrosion fields.

High-performance carbonized ZIF-8-doped hybrid carbon molecular sieve membrane for CO2/N2 separation

Li Yin,Dongfeng Li,Hongxia Guo,Shuai Wang,Tiexin Zhang,Yunling Liu,Fangyuan Gai,Xiaogang Zhao

Incorporating functional materials into polymer precursors is an effective way to prepare carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes for solving the trade-off problem between permeability and selectivity of gas separation. In this work, we induced ZIF-8 nanoparticles (from 5 to 20 wt%) as a doping agent to construct a series of phenolphthalein-based cardo poly (arylene ether ketone) (PEK-C) -based hybrid carbon molecular sieve (ZCMS) membranes for CO 2 /N 2 separation via an oxidation and a carbonization process with pyrolysis temperature in the range of 500–700 °C. The carbonized ligand and metal centre of ZIF-8 offered additional pores of carbon matrix, which tailored the ultramicropores of ZCMS membranes for both excellent CO 2 permeability and selectivity. By treating with the temperature of 600 °C, ZCMS-600-15 (ZCMS membrane based on 15 wt% of ZIF-8-doped PEK-C) exhibited the highest CO 2 permeability of 8902 Barrer, which was 1.8 times higher than that of CMS-600 (CMS membrane based on naked PEK-C). ZCMS-600-15 showed an ideal CO 2 /N 2 selectivity value of 42.2, which is also higher than that of other samples, indicating that the appropriate doping amount of ZIF-8 is 15 wt% and the proper carbonization temperature is 600 °C. Moreover, among all the samples, ZCMS-600-15 also showed a superior CO 2 permeability of 8285 Barrer and the highest CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 24.08 for an equimolar mixture of CO 2 and N 2 , far exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Therefore, our results suggest that incorporating MOFs into polymer precursors to prepare hybrid carbon molecular sieve membranes by carbonization process could solving the trade-off problem between permeability and selectivity, introducing new possibilities for industrial application.
