The chlor-alkali process is critical to the modern chemical industry because of the wide utilization of chlorine gas (Cl 2 ). More than 95 % of global Cl 2 production relies on electrocatalytic chlorine evolution reaction (CER) through chlor-alkali electrolysis. The RuO 2 electrocatalyst serves as the main active component widely used in commercial applications. However, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) generally competes with CER electrocatalysts at RuO 2 electrocatalyst owing to the intrinsically scaling reaction energy barrier of *OCl and *OOH intermediates, leading to decreased CER selectivity, high energy consumption, and increased cost. Here, the effect of Ag doping on selective CER over RuO 2 electrocatalysts prepared by a sol–gel method has been systematically studied. We found that Ag-doping can effectively improve the Faradaic efficiency of RuO 2 electrocatalyst for CER. Furthermore, the improved CER selectivity of Ag-doped RuO 2 electrocatalysts is highly dependent on the Ag-doping concentration. The optimized Ag 0.15 Ru 0.85 O 2 electrocatalyst displays an overpotential of 105 mV along with a selectivity of 84.64 ± 1.84 % in 5.0 M NaCl electrolyte (pH = 2.0 ± 0.05), significantly outperforming undoped one (142 mV, 72.75 ± 1.52 %). Our experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show electron transfer from Ag + to Ru 4+ suppresses *OOH intermediates desorption on Ag-doped RuO 2 , enabling improved CER selectivity. Such designs of Ag-doped RuO 2 electrocatalysts are expected to be favorable for practical chlor-alkali applications.

Efficient cooperative lubrication can be achieved via the introduction of core-shell structure lubricant additives with hard core and soft shell, for obtaining the expected anti-wear performance from the structural changes in the friction process. In this study, C@Ag microspheres with a core-shell structure were prepared by the redox method with carbon spheres as the core and Ag nanoparticles as the shell. Their tribological behaviors as base oil (G1830) additive with different concentrations were investigated in detail. Compared with base oil, the addition of C@Ag particles at 0.5 wt% can reduce the coefficient of friction (COF) and wear volume (Wv) up to 15.5% and 88%, respectively. More importantly, C@Ag particles provide superior lubrication performance to single additive (like carbon sphere (CS) and Ag nanoparticle). C@Ag core-shell particles contribute to the formation of tribo-film by melt bonding of flexible Ag and carbon sphere (CS) toward excellent self-repair performance and high-efficiency lubrication. Hence, core-shell structural nanoparticles with hard-core and soft-shell hold bright future for high-performance lubrication application.

Developing low-cost, realistic low temperature operable ammonia sensor is highly desirable in industrial for environmental monitoring. This paper focuses on the preparation of Ag nanoparticles-loaded SnO 2 /In 2 O 3 ternary composites by combining both indium oxide and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) compounds by hydrothermal method . They both remain as pure In 2 O 3 flakes and the size of each flake matrix is about 2 μm, which indicates that both Ag loading and SnO 2 composite have not damaged or changed the crystal structure of the In 2 O 3 -based composites. The best response gas for the Ag/SnO 2 /In 2 O 3 material was ammonia with a response value of 9.783 at the optimum operating temperature of 160 °C. The difference in each set of data after three cycles of testing was not more than 0.25. The tests showed that the sensor had good reproducibility and sensitivity, and had a low detection limit.

Metal-based nanoenzymes with excellent biocompatibility and stable chemical properties are an effective antimicrobial agent against bacterial resistance due to their radical-mediated catalysis. In this work, due to the pH of most bacterial infection sites being close to neutral, targeting the problem of Fe 3 O 4 @Ag difficulty in maintaining the catalytic activity of nanoenzymes in neutral environments, we prepare a novel multifunctional Fe 3 O 4 @Ag@ indocyanine green/adenosine triphosphate peroxidase nanoenzymes for synergistic antibacterial activity. ICG (Indocyanine Green) and ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) are adsorbed on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 @Ag through electrostatic adsorption to form its structure. The cell viability remained above 90%, indicating its good biocompatibility. By complexing ATP with nanoenzymes to participate in single electron transfer and binding with Fe (II), ATP promotes the sudden release of hydroxyl radical (·OH) from the system, successfully transferring Fe 3 O 4 @Ag the peroxidase activity of nanoenzymes extends to neutral pH. By utilizing ICG as a photosensitizer and a sonosensitizer, under the combined treatment of near-infrared light and ultrasound, the photodynamic therapy (PDT)/photothermal therapy (PTT)/sonodynamic therapy (SDT) functions can be achieved, achieving multifunctional synergistic antibacterial effects. In a neutral environment, its bactericidal efficiency against Gram negative ( Escherichia coli ) and Gram positive ( Staphylococcus aureus ) is 99.9% and 99.7%, respectively, providing a new multi-mode synergistic antibacterial strategy for bacterial infections. Graphical abstract Metal based nanoenzymes with excellent biocompatibility and stable chemical properties are an effective antimicrobial agent against bacterial resistance due to their radical mediated catalysis. The prepared multifunctional Fe 3 O 4 @Ag@ICG/ATP exhibit peroxidase nanoenzymes perform ance for synergistic antibacterial activity. Differing from graphene, the activated groups on the surface of layered two-dimensional titanium carbide (MXene) materials bestow superiority to self-assemble some novel MXene derivatives with intriguing chemical/physical properties. Here we first report a series of new MXene-Ag composites by directly mixing AgNO3 and alkalization-intercalated MXene (alk-MXene, Ti3C2(OH/ONa)2) solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at room temperature, in which an analogous urchin-shaped MXene-Ag0.9Ti0.1 bimetallic nanowire composite exhibits unexpected electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The addition of PVP solution induces the formation of 5-fold nanotwin Ag seeds, which then grow into Ag/Ti (Ag0.9Ti0.1) bimetallic nanowires. The unique bimetallic nanowires favor a four-electron transfer process, and exhibit high current density and good stability by offering numerous oxygen adsorption sites and shortening the diffusion path of adsorbed oxygen. The results represent a new step for the electrocatalytic applications of MXene materials, and also motivate enthusiasm in the quest for new MXene derivations.

Plasmonic core@satellites nanostructures comprising strongly coupled Au-nanoparticles as building blocks have drawn a lot of attention because of the optical application, e.g. surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based signal amplification. However, little has been reported on the core@satellites structures related to Ag-nanoparticles and the SERS enhancement from a singular core@satellites assembling. Here, we show the DNA assisted assembly of core@satellites, consisting of Ag-nanocube core and small Au-nanosphere satellites. For each core@satellites unit, an Ag-nanocube as a core is assembled with randomly distributed Au-nanospheres as satellites. In this way, abundant hot spots are formed at the sharp edged Ag-nanocube and the nanoscaled gaps between the Ag-nanocube core and the Au-nanosphere satellite. Raman measurements, atomic force microscope correlated Raman measurements and finite element modeling demonstrate that the Raman enhancement factor of the singular Ag-nanocube@Au-nanospheres core@satellites can be up to 3.4 × 10 8 . The Ag-nanocube@Au-nanoparticles core@satellites with in-built electromagnetic hot-spots could be used as excellent SERS substrates for rapid ultrasensitive detection of organic pollutants in the environment. Rapid and sensitive detection of Ag + in aquatic ecosystems is of great significance for public health and environmental security. In this report, a simple and feasible colorimetric method for the detection of Ag + at an ultralow concentration is developed. Bovine serum albumin stabilized gold nanoclusters (BSA@AuNCs) possess the peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 . Once Ag + is introduced, Ag + selectively reacts with Au° through redox reaction, which induces an apparent inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of BSA@AuNCs. On the basis of this effect, a colorimetric Ag + sensor is established. The high specificity of the Ag–Au interaction provides excellent selectivity over the interfering metal ions. The lowest detectable concentration for Ag + is 0.204 μM. And this method could be applied for the rapid analysis of Ag + in lake water with satisfactory results. These advantages demonstrate that the proposed method is a promising candidate for the detection of Ag + in water samples.

A self-reporting aerogel toward stress sensitive slectricity (SSE) was presented using an interconnected 3D fibrous network of Ag nanoparticles/cellulose nanofiber aerogel (Ag/CNF), which was prepared via combined routes of silver mirror reaction and ultrasonication. Sphere-like Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) with mean diameter of 74 nm were tightly anchored in the cellulose nanofiber through by the coherent interfaces as the conductive materials. The as-prepared Ag/CNF as a self-reporting material for SSE not only possessed quick response and sensitivity, but also be easily recovered after 100th compressive cycles without plastic deformation or degradation in compressive strength. Consequently, Ag/CNF could play a viable role in self-reporting materials as a quick electric-stress responsive sensor.

The design of self-sterilizing surfaces with favorable biocompatibility is acknowledged as an effective approach to deal with the bacterial infections of biomedical devices. In this study, we report an intriguing protocol for the large-scale fabrication of self-sterilizing and biocompatible surface film coatings by using polymer shielded silver nanoparticle loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT) nano-dispersions. To achieve the antibacterial coatings, the bioinspired positively charged and negatively charged AgNPs@oCNTs were alternately deposited onto substrates by spray-coating assisted layer-by-layer assembly. Then the bacterial inhibitory zones, optical density value monitoring, bacterial killing efficiency and adhesion were investigated; and all the results revealed that the AgNPs@oCNTs thin film coatings exhibited robust and long-term antibacterial activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria . Moreover, due to the shielding effects of polymer layers, the coatings showed extraordinary blood compatibility and limited toxicity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells. It is believed that the proposed large-scale fabrication of bactericidal, blood and cell compatible AgNPs@oCNT based thin film coatings will have great potential to forward novel operational pathogenic inhibition strategies to avoid undesired bacterial contaminations of biomedical implants or biological devices. Statement of Significance Bacterial infection of medical devices has been considered to be a world-wide clinical threat towards patients’ health. In this study, a bioinspired and biocompatible antibacterial coating was prepared via the spray-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The silver nanopartilces loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT), which were coated by functional polymers (chitosan and synthetic heparin mimicking polymers), were prepared via mussel inspired chemistry; and the spray-assisted assembly process allowed the fast construction on devices. Owing to the antibacterial efficiency of the loaded AgNPs, the coating showed robust bacterial killing activity and resistance towards bacterial adhesion . Moreover, since that the AgNPs were shielded by the polymers, the coating exhibited no clear toxicity at blood or cellular level. Benefiting from the universal and large-scale fabrication advancements of the spray assisted LbL coating; it is believed that the proposed strategy can be applied in designing many other kinds of self-sterilizing biomedical implants and devices.

Hybrid nanostructures can be multifunctional and even possess enhanced properties. Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated and applied to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Compared with Ag NPs, Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites demonstrated enhanced catalytic activities. Furthermore, due to their magnetic properties, Ag–Fe2O3 nanocomposites could be easily separated from the reaction mixture and recycled through an external magnetic field. These findings will help us design hybrid nanostructures with catalytic activity and explore other potential applications of magnetic nanocomposites.

We demonstrate a general strategy to design step by step the Ag nanoparticle-functionalized ZnO micro-flowers (Ag/ZnO composites). XRD patterns confirmed the presence of Ag nanoparticles in ZnO/Ag composites, and the SEM and TEM results further demonstrated that Ag nanoparticles were highly dispersed and anchored onto the surface of each ZnO nanosheets. By using the ZnO/Ag composites, the photodegradation of two herbicide derivatives, metamitron and metribuzin, were studied. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the fact that the Ag deposition could reduce the recombination probability of electron-hole pairs, and the photocatalytic mechanism were also investigated in this paper.

Efficient solar vapor generation under normal one-sun illumination is widely expected to relieve water scarcity all over the world. Herein, we prepare a highly efficient solar vapor generator via the deposition of Ag nanoparticles on diatomite. Ag/diatomite combined with a filter paper, an airlaid paper and a polystyrene foam showed excellent vapor generation performance (the evaporation rate and efficiency (η) were ∼1.39 kg m−2 h−1 and ∼92.2%, respectively) under one-sun illumination at room temperature (25.0 °C). To the best of our knowledge, these values outperform most of the previously reported vapor generation performances and vapor generation efficiencies (if not all). Compared to the performance of Ag/SiO2 (η ≈ 66.2%) and commercial Ag nanoparticles (η ≈ 72.6%), the outstanding performance of Ag/diatomite was attributed to the synergy of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles and the confinement effect in micrometer size-diatomite. Considering the low cost ($10 per ton) and large-scale availability of diatomite as well as the easy construction of the vapor generation configuration that we proposed, this study provides prospects for practical applications towards relieving water scarcity.
