In this study, tungsten oxide microstructures/nanostructures with different morphologies were prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis methods. The morphologies and structures of the obtained products were characterised by field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The photocatalytic properties of tungsten oxide microstructures/nanostructures were characterised by the degradation of rhodamine B solution. The results indicate that tungsten oxide microspheres prepared by using tungstic acid and hydrogen peroxide solution as raw materials show the highest photocatalytic activity. By changing the concentration of tungstic acid used in the synthesis process, the morphologies of tungsten oxide microspheres can be controlled. The influences of the amount of chemical reagent addition on its morphology and catalytic properties were discussed. In order to further improve the photocatalytic activity of the samples, Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the obtained tungsten oxide microspheres. The photocatalytic experiment results indicate that the photocatalytic performance of tungsten oxide was improved by Ag loading. The results indicate that Ag-loaded tungsten oxide microspheres are favourable for their photocatalytic applications.

Nitrite (NO2–) in water and food is a potential threat to human health. The determination of nitrite content is very significant for people’s life safety. Here, 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP)-modulated silver growth on gold nanospheres (GNSs) was designed to detect nitrite. It was verified that the exposed amino groups of 4-ATP molecules on GNSs can accelerate Ag overgrowth. On the contrary, the deamination reaction of 4-ATP with nitrite can reduce the Ag overgrowth rates. 4-ATP modified on GNSs can not only increase the spectrophotometry response of nitrite with a low limit of detection (LOD = 36 nM) but also obtain a wide and flexible detection range (0–60 μM). In addition, this method showed good selectivity to nitrite. The excellent optical response, the sharp contrast between the acceleration and deceleration of Ag growth, and the customizable basic setting of the sensing ligands can provide a universal design scheme for high-performance detection methods.

Fabricating rapid and high-efficient charge-transfer pathways is contributing to improving charge separation and receiving extensive concerns in preparation of semiconductors composites photocatalysts. In this work, ternary Ag/AgCl/Ta 2 O 5−x mesocrystals were fabricated for visible-light photodegradation of emerging pollutants by introducing Ag/AgCl nanoparticles into defects engineered Ta 2 O 5−x mesocrystals. The prepared composites showed efficient visible-light absorption and efficient visible-light photodegradation of emerging pollutants, mainly attributed to the fabricating of high-efficient Z-scheme charge-transfer pathways between Ag/AgCl and Ta 2 O 5−x mesocrystals. Note that, the experimental results also demonstrated the significant roles of defects engineered Ta 2 O 5−x mesocrystals in fabricating high-efficient Z-scheme charge-transfer pathways. Besides, the prepared Ag/AgCl and Ta 2 O 5−x composites could be employed for efficient visible-light photodegradation of many other organic contaminants. Current work indicates a promising and high-performance visible-light composite photocatalyst for dealing with emerging contaminants.

The abuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of numerous super resistant bacteria, which pose a serious threat to public health. Developing nanomaterials with novel modes of bactericidal activity offers the promise of fighting pathogens without the risk of causing drug resistances. Here, we used reduced graphene oxide (rGO), bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) to synthesize a ternary nanocomposite, rGO–MoS2–Ag, via a simple one-pot method. The resulting rGO–MoS2–Ag presented as crumpled and sheet-like structures decorated with Ag nanoparticles. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of rGO–MoS2–Ag against Escherichia coli were 50 and 100 μg ml−1, while Staphylococcus aureus reacted only to twice higher concentrations of 100 and 200 μg ml−1, respectively. Notably, rGO–MoS2–Ag exhibited better antibacterial activity towards E. coli and S. aureus than rGO, MoS2, or rGO–MoS2. This result can be attributed to the excellent performance of rGO–MoS2–Ag in destroying the bacterial cell membrane and inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species. The Ag+ ion release of rGO–MoS2–Ag was delayed, endowing the nanocomposite with long-term antibacterial capabilities and better biosafety. Our results indicate that the as-prepared rGO–MoS2–Ag has promising potential for application in biomedicine and public health.

Desalination performance of hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) intensively depends on the electrode materials with redox activity and capacitance ability. Herein, Ag-doped hollow ZIFs-derived nanoporous carbon (Ag/ZCs) was employed as an anode material by the pyrolysis of Ag-doped hollow ZIFs precursor, which was fabricated by in situ tannic acid (TA) etching/reduction strategy. Provably, TA serves as not only an etchant for tailoring ZIFs structure, but also a reductant for Ag nanoparticles formation. The obtained Ag/ZCs possesses unique hollow cavities and high redox activity. As expected, the HCDI system with Ag/ZCs electrode exhibits excellent deionization capacity of 29.18 mg g −1 in 500 mg L −1 NaCl solution at 1.2 V, which is much higher than that of conventional carbon-based CDI system. Moreover, desirable regeneration stability of the Ag/ZCs HCDI was well maintained after 20 cycle experiments. The results demonstrate that Ag/ZCs is a potential anode material for HCDI applications.

Tin monoxide (SnO) is a p-type semiconductor which is promising in field effect transistors (FETs) applications. However, nanostructure SnO has hardly been applied in FETs due to its stability issue. Herein, oleylamine protected Ag@SnO core–shell nanostructures have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method and configured as FETs. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements are carried out to confirm the formation of pure phase SnO. The Ag@SnO core–shell single nanostructure FETs and thin film transistors are successfully fabricated on Si/SiO2 substrates. The doping of Ag in SnO and the formation of Schottky junction between SnO and Ag effectively improve the performance of FETs. The Ag nanowire (NW) core provides the unhindered carrier transport route, and the Schottky junction formed between Ag NW and SnO effectively constrains the leakage current. The nanostructure FETs show typical p-type characteristics with a premium on/off ratio (Ion/Ioff) of 3.3 × 105, a subthreshold swing of 0.09 V dec–1 and a high p-type field effect mobility (μFE) of 1.93 cm2 V –1 s –1. The excellent properties of Ag@SnO NWs FETs promise to be important for the next-generation p-type FETs.

Herein, Ag/AgBr/Ag3VO4 composites were synthesized by a simple continuous precipitation method. The obtained composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Photocatalytic performance of the composites was assessed by the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under visible light, and the effects of different nominal mass ratios of AgBr and Ag3VO4 on the photocatalytic activity were investigated. The results showed that after 20 min of visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), the removal rate of MO in the presence of a 5 : 1 sample reached 98.6%. The EIS and photocurrent results demonstrated that the enhancement of the visible light photocatalytic activity was attributed to the efficient electron–hole pair separation. In addition, the scavenging reactions conducted via the addition of different scavengers confirmed that h+ and ·O2− were the main active species in the reaction. The present study offers potential for the degradation of contaminants.

In this work, an Au–Ag alloy nanourchin (Au–Ag alloy NU) based electrochemiluminescent (ECL) sensor for the measurement of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) was developed. The as-prepared Au–Ag alloy NUs exhibited higher specific surface area and better conductivity owing to their unique urchin-like morphology, which resulted in excellent electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2 in the luminol–H2O2 ECL system. We have found that the Au–Ag alloy NUs could enhance the ECL signal in the luminol–H2O2 solution. Based on these facts, a facile and label-free ECL immunosensor has been constructed for the analysis of cTnI, a cardiac biomarker, with a wide linear range of 3.5 pg mL−1–350 μg mL−1. This novel ECL immunosensor has good stability and reproducibility, showing potential application in clinical diagnostics. In addition, a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor for H2O2 was also fabricated, with a wide linear detection range of 100 nM–200 μM, a low limit of detection of 45 nM and a fast response time (less than 2 s).

Silver (Ag)-based Janus nanoparticles (NPs) are of broad interest for extensive applications due to their excellent photoelectric performances and special structure. However, it still remains challenging to prepare this type of Janus NP with high uniformity in a large scale. Here, we present a facile wet-chemical strategy to synthesize Ag-MoS2 Janus NPs via adding an appropriate amount of AgNO3 into the MoS2 nanosphere (200 nm in size)-contained aqueous solution. These Janus NPs represent a new type of heterogeneous nanostructure. Each Janus NP is made up of one tiny-Ag-dot-decorated MoS2 nanosphere and one polyhedral Ag single crystal (∼100 nm in size), and both of them attach together, showing a snowman-like dimer. Such Janus NPs or dimers can not be detached by the ultrasonic vibration even with a high power, showing strong adhesion between them. Further, the morphology and size of the polyhedral Ag nanocrystals attached on MoS2 nanospheres can be controlled by the AgNO3 addition amount, reaction time, and temperature. A growth model is proposed to understand the formation of these Janus NPs, which is based on the tiny Ag dots’ aggregation and oriented connection mechanism. Importantly, such Ag-MoS2 Janus NPs can be used as nanomotors, due to their asymmetric catalytic component structure, and self-propelled in H2O2 fuel solutions. They show good directional motion and significant dependence of their speed on fuel concentration. This study expands our understanding of the formation of heterogeneous Janus particles and provides a promising platform to investigate active colloids as nanomotors.

As a typical noble nanomaterial , silver (Ag) nanoparticles have been widely used as a catalyst, but their performance is somewhat limited by self-aggregation. In this study, H 2 SrTa 2 O 7 nanosheet-supported ultrafine Ag nanoparticles (Ag/H 2 SrTa 2 O 7 ) were successfully synthesized, and the aggregation of Ag nanoparticles was effectively prevented. The Ag/H 2 SrTa 2 O 7 catalyst exhibited excellent activity in p -nitrophenol reduction and was successfully recycled 10 times without a substantial decrease in its catalytic activity. This superior catalytic activity could be ascribed to the large surface area of H 2 SrTa 2 O 7 nanosheets and the effective dispersion of Ag nanoparticles on the perovskite nanosheets. This work is important for the simple and green preparation of Ag catalysts with excellent catalytic performance on nontoxic perovskite nanosheets.

Persulfate (PS) activation have been extensively considered as a promising technology for removing recalcitrant pollutants, due to their production of radicals with superior oxidation reactivity. However, a catalyst with high reactive and convenient recovery for PS activation still remains to be developed. In this work, the silver-doped bismuth ferrite (Ag x -BiFeO 3 , x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4) catalysts with variable Ag content were synthesized via a facile sol-gel method and applied as heterogeneous catalyst in PS activation for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Ag 0.4 -BiFeO 3 presented the best catalytic activity compared with other Ag doped BiFeO 3 composites, 91% TC could be efficiently removed within 60 min under optimized conditions and the reaction rate constant was 0.0338 min −1 . On the basis of the characterization analysis and catalytic test results, Ag could be the effective active site in PS activation and had a significant effect on PS activation. Moreover, the initial pH has negligible effect on the catalytic performance, indicating that Ag 0.4 -BiFeO 3 /PS system could work in a wide pH range. The results of electron spin-resonance spectroscopy and radical quenching tests suggested that both SO 4 − and OH radicals were involved in the Ag 0.4 -BiFeO 3 /PS system. The possible mechanism of Ag 0.4 -BiFeO 3 activating PS and the major degradation pathway of TC degradation were proposed. At last, the reusability experiment results proved that Ag 0.4 -BiFeO 3 catalyst still has a high catalytic performance after 4 times used.
