An Additively Manufactured Bionic Forest-like 3D Al2O3/Epoxy Architecture with Extraordinarily High Thermal Conductivity

Jingyi Chen,Ruyue Su,Xiaotong Chen,Rujie He

With the critical requirements for the heat dissipation of 5G electronics, highly thermally conductive ceramic/polymer composites are commonly utilized due to their high thermal conductivity, good electrical insulation, and superior processability properties. The shift from conventional two-dimensional (2D) planar structures to three-dimensional (3D) structures is currently the primary focus of enhancing the thermal characteristics. In this study, enlightened by the forest cooling principle of the urban edge, bionic forest-like 3D Al2O3 structures (3D-A) were designed by topological optimization algorithms as a theoretical basis and prepared by vat photopolymerization (VPP) additive manufacturing. After sintering and compositing with epoxy, a bionic forest-like 3D Al2O3/epoxy (3D-AE) composite architecture was obtained successfully. The 3D-AE architecture achieved an extraordinarily high thermal conductivity of 15.76 Wm1–K–1 when the ceramic filler was 40 vol %, representing a remarkable 7778.2% improvement compared to neat epoxy. Besides, a high-power light-emitting diode (LED) with the 3D-AE architecture as a cooling substrate was set together concurrently to investigate the heat dissipation capability. Finite element analysis and infrared thermal imaging further validated the superior heat dissipation capabilities of 3D-AE. From this study, a quick and efficient technique for designing and creating 3D ceramic/polymer composite structures with high thermal conductivity was put forth by integrating topology optimization theory with biomimetic concepts and additive manufacturing.

Universal increase in catalytic hydrogenation performance for lanthanide-modified Pd/Al2O3 catalysts by hydrogen transfer

Zhe Zhang,Jianan Zhang,Shuai Chen,Yanan Liu,Yufei He,Dianqing Li

Hydrogen spillover phenomenon can significantly impact the activity in hydrogenation reaction, but the spillover is limited in a very short range on non-reducible Al 2 O 3 , a most widely used industrial support. Herein, Al 2 O 3 doped with different lanthanides (ln) was prepared by co-precipitation, which was then used to produce Pd/ln-Al 2 O 3 catalysts. These catalysts display much higher hydrogenation activity towards alkylated anthraquinone than undoped Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst and those modified by non-lanthanide elements. After the introduction of lanthanides, the reaction order of H 2 decreases from 1 to 0. Further characterization and DFT calculation show that H 2 storage ability is increased for ln-doped catalysts due to the low activation energy of H transfer and low adsorption energy of H on O(-ln) sites. In addition, a reasonable relationship between reducibility of ln 3+ in catalysts and the catalytic performance is found.

Enhancing Preferential CO Oxidation of Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst Through an Acid-Modified Method

Shan Li,Huixia Li,Taotao Huang,Xuebo Chen

The development of efficient Cu–Ce catalysts for selective CO oxidation in hydrogen streams (CO-PROX) remains a critical challenge for hydrogen purification technologies. Herein, we report an acid-modified Cu–Ce/γ-Al2O3 catalyst synthesized through HCl-assisted wet impregnation and thermal aging, demonstrating exceptional low-temperature CO-PROX performance. The optimized CuCe0.8(Cl)0.2/γ-Al2O3 catalyst achieves superior CO conversion below 160 °C and maintains stable activity for 50 h at 160 °C. Mechanistic studies reveal that HCl modification induces dual enhancement effects: (1) increased Cu+ species density enhances CO adsorption capacity; (2) elevated Ce3+ concentration promotes oxygen vacancy formation for efficient O2 activation. Complementary characterization demonstrates that the acid treatment optimizes the active species dispersion and creates hierarchical pore structures in the γ-Al2O3 support, which facilitates reactant accessibility and stabilizes catalytic intermediates. The reaction mechanism involves synergistic cooperation between Cu+-mediated CO adsorption, oxygen vacancy-assisted O2 activation, and hydroxyl-assisted bicarbonate intermediate formation on the alumina support. This work establishes an effective acid-modification strategy for designing durable CO-PROX catalysts, advancing the development of a practical hydrogen purification system.

Size shrinkage and compressive behaviour of Al2O3 honeycomb structures fabricated via Digital Light Processing technology

Yangli Xu,Zeling Yang,Guoqin Huang,Chenxu Ren,Guangyao Han,Xiaopeng Jiang,Tingting Li,Congming Ke,Yong Zeng,Xipeng Xu

Al 2 O 3 ceramic have excellent chemical inertness, superior heat resistance, and excellent corrosion resistance, so they are considered ideal materials for manufacturing high-performance components such as thermal end devices in aerospace, heat dissipation panels in electronic communication, and exhaust filters in the automotive industry. Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a useful technology to fabricate complex Al 2 O 3 ceramic components. However, the size shrinkage effect of DLP-fabricated components need to be investigated deeply before its further application. In this work, we utilized DLP technology to fabricate Al 2 O 3 ceramic honeycomb structures and systematically investigated their microstructure, size shrinkage, and mechanical properties. Our findings revealed that the Al 2 O 3 ceramic grains exhibit flake-like structures with an average diameter of 1–2 μm, and the ceramic particles are tightly bonded. The shrinkage rates in the X and Y axes were 7.54 % and 7.42 %, respectively, while the Z-axis exhibited a more significant shrinkage of 13.04 %. This anisotropic shrinkage in different direction was attributed to accumulation of the interlayer bonding under gravity action during debinding and sintering process. The compressive stress-strain curve of the honeycomb structures demonstrated a typical brittle compressive behavior, including elastic, stress plateau, and brittle fracture stages. The honeycomb structures exhibited an elastic modulus of 54.49 ± 1.22 MPa and a compressive strength of 10.22 ± 0.42 MPa. The fracture analysis indicated that the fractures region of honeycomb structures initiated at the corners of the honeycomb structures, indicating their easy-broken compared to the walls. These findings provide valuable guidance for the high-precision and high-performance manufacturing of complex Al 2 O 3 ceramic components.

Reaction mechanism between carbon and CaO–SiO2–Al2O3–Na2O slag system during continuous casting process

Ruijing Sun,Jinhu Wu,Hui Wang,Wei Zhang,Chao Liu,Shaopeng Gu,Weihong Xing,Liang Yu

The reaction behavior between the carbon and mold fluxes during the heating process is vital for a successful continuous casting process and the high billet quality. A detailed investigation combined with thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques was carried out to systematically investigate the transformation mechanistic of the macro physicochemical properties, melting behavior, viscosity, crystallization, and heat transfer performance caused by the reaction behavior. The results showed that the mold flux underwent carbonate decomposition (973–1223 K), solid reaction (1273–1573 K), and melting process (1473–1673 K) during the continuous casting process. The carbon-bearing mold flux exhibited an endothermic peak at approximately 1673 K, corresponding to a weight loss ratio of approximately 14.5% on the TG curve, confirming that carbon could react with the middle mineral phases Ca 2 SiO 4 , Ca 2 Al 2 SiO 7, and Na 6 Ca 3 Si 6 O 18 to form SiC, increasing the breaking temperature by approximately 293 K. SEM and TEM results indicated that the melting behavior was restrained by the carbon itself and the newly formed components. Besides, the addition of carbon increased the degree of polymerization of molten slag, the thickness of slag film and the proportion of small crystals in slag film, further leading to an increase in crystallization and heat transfer performances. The reaction mechanism between carbon and slag and the subsequent effects on melting point, viscosity, crystallization ratio and heat flux density were clearly understood, which is meaningful for the carbon blending process of the mold flux.

Electrical insulation improvement of Al2O3 composite films at high temperatures utilizing electrohydrodynamic jet printing technique

Zhichun Liu,Yue Chen,Zhixuan Su,Chengfei Zhang,Zhangquan Wang,Hongwei Ji,Chenyang Xue,Zhenyin Hai,Junsheng Liang

Ultra-high temperature thin-film sensors ( UTTSs ) offer advantages such as high sensitivity, rapid thermal response, and minimal environmental interference in multi-physical parameter monitoring of the hot sections. As one of the key parts of the UTTSs , the insulation films are of significance to their property and reliability to provide high temperature electrical isolation between workpiece and the sensitive film. However, the resistance of the insulation films will decrease at high temperatures, which causes the failure of the UTTSs . In this study, Al 2 O 3 composite films were fabricated using electrohydrodynamic jet (E-jet) printing technology combining Al 2 O 3 mixture and Al 2 O 3 sol. The S-Al 2 O 3 film prepared with the superior fluidity Al 2 O 3 sol can effectively repair the defect existing in the M-Al 2 O 3 film prepared with the Al 2 O 3 mixture. Consequently, it reduced the surface roughness of the insulation films from 1.496 μm to 1.086 μm and finally repaired their through defects. Experimental results demonstrated that the Al 2 O 3 composite films exhibited significantly improved performance compared to pure M-Al 2 O 3 . The insulation resistances can reach up to 25 MΩ, 199 kΩ at 800 °C and 1200 °C, respectively. The normalized resistance of the Al 2 O 3 composite films is up to 476 times higher than that in the existing literatures at 800 °C. Practically, the Al 2 O 3 composite films were applied to the thin-film strain gauges ( TFSGs ) and the tungsten-rhenium coaxial thermocouples ( TRCTs ). Both of the TFSGs and the TRCTs exhibited excellent performance at high temperatures.

Photoaging enhanced heteroaggregation between nanoplastics and Al2O3 in aquatic environment: Experiments and DLVO theory calculation

Quanyun Ye,Junfei Li,Dong Zeng,Ronghui He,Peiran Li,Jie Pan,Wencheng Wu,Dechun He

Nanoplastics experience complex aging processes when exposed to the environment, leading to substantial modifications in their physicochemical properties. These transformations significantly influence their interaction with mineral colloids, consequently altering their migration and fate. This study systematically investigated the homoaggregation of pristine and UV irradiation aged polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNP), as well as the heteroaggregation with alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) minerals under different water chemical conditions. The results showed that photoaging not only altered the surface morphology of PSNP, but also increased their surface negative charge and generated oxygen-containing functional groups, thereby improving the stability of the aged PSNP. Al₂O₃ heteroaggregated with PSNP, leading to a decrease in stability. The interaction between Al₂O₃ and aged PSNP was more pronounced compared to pristine PSNP. The pH value and ionic strength significantly influenced heteroaggregation, with acidic conditions and low ionic strength promoting heteroaggregation through stronger electrostatic attraction. Bivalent electrolytes (Ca 2+ ) were more effective than monovalent electrolytes (Na + ) in inducing PSNP heteroaggregation, as more carboxyl groups of PSNP were generated after photoaging, which combined with Ca 2+ through the bridging effect and enhanced the heteroaggregation. Furthermore, the heteroaggregation behaviors of both pristine/aged PSNP and Al 2 O 3 followed the DLVO theory. The findings revealed the important controlling effect and mechanism of UV irradiation and Al 2 O 3 on the fate of nanoplastics in aquatic environments.

Experimental research on the hydrotreatment of waste tire pyrolysis oil upgrading with CoMo/Al2O3 catalyst

Penglin Ma,Zengyi Ma,Jianhua Yan,Yike Zhang,Qunxing Huang

Waste tire pyrolysis oil (WTPO) exhibits high calorific value but requires heteroatoms (S/N) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) reduction for fuel applications. Hydrotreatment is an effective method for removing these heteroatoms, enhancing hydrocarbon saturation, and improving oil quality. This study compares unpresulfurised CoMo/Al 2 O 3 catalytic versus non-catalytic hydrotreatment to upgrade WTPO. The research systematically explores the transformation of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds, as well as hydrocarbons, under various reaction conditions. The difficulty of hydrogenation desulfurization for four types of sulfur-containing compounds was ranked. C–N bonds in linear compounds and heterocycles in nitrogen-containing compounds can break under the influence of a catalyst or at elevated temperatures and pressures. However, the direct elimination of nitrogen atoms bonded to the benzene ring in aniline-like compounds remains challenging using this catalyst. A representative heterocyclic compound containing both nitrogen and sulfur, benzothiazole, underwent ring-opening conversion to aniline. Even when using unpresulfurized catalysts at higher weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), dehydrogenation side reactions and PAHs formation can be suppressed to a certain extent. Based on these findings, this paper offers useful insights into the catalytic performance of CoMo/Al 2 O 3 during WTPO hydrotreatment and provides practical references for catalyst selection and reaction condition optimization.

Enhanced HCl resistance of Na-Ce/Al2O3 hydrolysis catalyst to boost blast furnace gas purification

Yuting Lin,Yuran Li,Qiang Cao,Jianshan Wang,Yanbin Cui,Tingyu Zhu

The activity of carbonyl sulfur (COS) hydrolysis catalyst is inhibited by hydrogen chloride (HCl) and then restricts the application of blast furnace gas purification. The presence of HCl significantly reduces the COS hydrolysis conversion by destroying the Al-O bond and -OH. A novel Na and Ce supported Al-based catalyst (Na-Ce/Al 2 O 3 ) was designed to enhance the activity of COS hydrolysis in an HCl-containing atmosphere. It has been found that the addition of Ce creates oxygen vacancy, with three effects on promoting catalyst activity. The oxidation of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) is inhibited due to the occupation of the oxygen vacancy by HCl, reducing the sulfur species deposition. H 2 O can be adsorbed and dissociated on the oxygen vacancy to produce -OH group, improving COS hydrolysis. HCl can be preferentially anchored on the oxygen vacancy based on the adsorption energy, protecting -OH group. The improvement of HCl-resistance is essential for the Na-Ce/Al 2 O 3 hydrolysis catalyst to adapt to the complex atmosphere of blast furnace gas and increase the catalyst lifespan.

Catalytic Ozonation Process for Treating Coking Biochemical Wastewater Based on an Fe-Mn/Al2O3 Catalyst

Yihe Qin,Run Yuan,Shaojun Luo,Haiming Huang,Xuwen He

Catalysts with high catalytic performance are crucial for the catalytic ozonation of organic wastewater. This study synthesized an efficient, stable, and practical Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 ozone catalyst for wastewater treatment using an impregnation calcination method, and applied it in the catalytic ozonation of wastewater. When the concentration of manganese nitrate was 0.15   mol/L, the Mn/Fe ratio was 3:1, the immersion time was 24   hours, the calcination temperature was 500 ℃, and the calcination time was 4   hours, the prepared Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 had the best catalytic effect on simulated wastewater, with a chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 73.6%. At the same time, the physicochemical properties of the catalyst were investigated, and the catalytic effect of the catalyst on actual coking wastewater was investigated on a laboratory scale. When the ozone concentration was 20   mg/L, the gas flow rate was 0.5   L/min, the catalyst concentration was 400   g/L, and the pH was 7.02, the actual COD removal efficiency of coking wastewater was 71.6%. The pilot test results showed that the COD of the treated coking wastewater could stably meet the standard (COD<80   mg/L), with an average COD removal rate of about 58.3%, indicating that the Fe-Mn/Al 2 O 3 had high catalytic activity and good stability. Kinetic analysis showed that the degradation process of organic pollutants followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. The results of water quality analysis such as conventional water quality indicators, fluorescence spectroscopy, and molecular weight classification indicated that the large molecular organic pollutants were efficiently degraded. Mechanism analysis indicated that the active components of the catalyst reacted with ozone through electron transfer to enhance the ozone utilization efficiency and efficiently remove organic pollutants. This study can provide theoretical support and technical reference for the standardized discharge of coking wastewater in the future.

Low shrinkage and high mechanical properties Al2O3 ceramics prepared by vat photopolymerization without alone debinding

Nannan Zhu,Jingyu Wang,Lijuan Zhang,Guangwu Wen

In this paper, a low-shrinkage, high mechanical properties vat photopolymerization 3D-printed alumina ceramic preparation process without alone debinding was investigated for the first time through the optimization of photosensitive resin formulations. The low-viscosity alumina ceramic slurry with a solid content of 65 vol% could be 3D-printed into a green body. When the sintering temperature was 1620 °C, the bending strength and Vickers hardness of the Al 2 O 3 ceramics reached a maximum value of 482.5 MPa and 13.5 GPa. At this point, the shrinkage of the samples in different directions (X, Y, and Z axis) was 8.7 %, 9.2 %, and 9.4 %, respectively. Moreover, mullite was generated in situ during the sintering process with the formation mechanism analyzed. The research findings indicate that the introduction of silicon-containing polymers into the slurry can significantly hold promise for breakthroughs in industrial applications of large-sized and complex-structured alumina ceramics.

Flexible temperature sensors based on optimized paper/Cu/Al2O3 and graphene/PVDF composite sensing layers

Pengfei Zhao,Jijun Ding,Haixia Chen,Haiwei Fu

Wearable devices have great potential for development in the fields of human health detection and human-computer interaction due to its flexibility and portability. In this work, Firstly, the resistance response performance of paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 to temperature is optimized by changing the sputtering time of Al 2 O 3 . Combining the resistance change and stability after one month, paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 films with 1 min Al 2 O 3 layer is selected. Then, temperature sensor based on optimized paper/Cu/Al 2 O 3 and graphene/PVDF composite temperature-sensitive layers is fabricated. The sensor shows negative temperature coefficient, high temperature response and stability, which provides significant advantages in the field of temperature monitoring. The fastest response/recovery time of the sensor is 1.4 s and 10.48 s respectively, which is fast and reliable in capturing the temperature changes and thus has the capability of real-time temperature monitoring. Another outstanding feature of the sensor is its high linearity to temperature fluctuations (R 2 =0.947). This feature suggests that the sensor enables real-time resistance-temperature interaction. In addition, its practical applications will be explored. The sensor can quickly sense the temperature of fingers, hot water, and working mobile phones. At the same time, the excellent performance of the sensor enables it to achieve the function of illuminating the LED. It lays the foundation for the application of temperature sensors in flexible wearable device applications.
