A reduced graphene oxide supported Au-Bi bimetallic nanoparticles (rGO/Au-Bi) have been synthesized and employed as a novel sensing platform for electrochemical determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ simultaneously. The successful formation of rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At the rGO/Au-Bi nanocomposites modified electrode, two well-resolved voltammetric peaks for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were observed in differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) measurements. Under the optimized conditions (pH 4.5, deposition potential −1.0 V, deposition time 200 s), the DPASV response currents demonstrated good linearity with the concentration of Pb 2+ (0.1–500 μg L −1 ) and Cd 2+ (0.1–300 μg L −1 ). The detection limits was 0.05 μM for Pb 2+ and 0.02 μM for Cd 2+ , respectively. In addition, the proposed electrode exhibited outstanding resistance to potentially interferents, high stability and excellent repeatability. Satisfactory application of proposed electrode was also demonstrated by the determination of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ in real river water samples.

Four β-cyclodextrin/4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate/polyethylene glycol (β-CD/MDI/PEG) crosslinking copolymers with different crosslinking density were prepared and characterized as novel polymeric solid–solid phase change materials (SSPCMs) for thermal energy storage . In the SSPCMs, PEG acts as the phase change functional chain and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) acts as the molecular framework. The results from wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) show that the synthesized SSPCMs have good crystallization properties and spherocrystal morphology with smaller size than that of PEG. According to the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) curves, the SSPCMs possess high phase change enthalpies , good reusability , thermal reliability and stability. It is concluded that the crosslinking density of SSPCMs is a crucial factor significantly influenced the free movement and crystallization of PEG segments, and then affects phase transition properties of SSPCMs.

The back contact adhesion is the important factor of the microstructural performance which can determine the optoelectronic properties of the kesterite-based solar cells. Here, we present a rational and effective strategy to significantly enhance the back contact adhesion of Cu 2 (Zn,Cd)Sn(S,Se) 4 (CZCTSSe) absorber layers by insetting the appropriate thickness carbon-doping CZCTS thin films . We chose the oleylamine as the carbon-doping reagent which can generate a small amount of carbon in the annealing process . The suitable thickness carbon-doping CZCTS films can significantly change the crystal growth mechanism of CZCTSSe absorber layers, and eliminate the holes in the back contact. The efficiency of CZCTSSe solar cells fabricated by insetting the appropriate thickness carbon-doping CZCTS films is above 7%, and shows the excellent repeatability and long-term air stability compared with the control devices.

Development of carbonaceous materials from biomass have attracted tremendous research interest because of their intriguing physicochemical properties and promising applications. However, endowing them with precisely controlled morphologies remains a formidable challenge. Herein, oxygen-functionalized biomass-derived carbon-nanosheets (CNSs) framework was synthesized using ball-milling ultrasonic exfoliation for their application to remove cadmium Cd(II) from water matrices. The obtained CNSs showed remarkably higher surface area (368.9 m 2 /g), thickness-range (∼6–8 nm) and pore size (10.58 nm) than pristine carbon (PC) (10.126 m 2 /g, 1–2 µm and 2.13 nm, respectively). CNSs demonstrated higher adsorption capacity (545.76 mg g −1 ), superior reusability (removal efficiency maintained >91 % after 10 cycles) and excellent selectivity (K d = 4.7 × 10 6 mL g −1 ). The adsorption isotherm and kinetics data were better fitted by Langmuir and pseudo-second order models. High adsorption selectivity of CNSs led to 97.7 % Cd(II) adsorption in presence of Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions. The strong efficiency of CNSs was also evident in complex water matrices including tap water, groundwater (Cd(II) removal of >99 %) and river water (98.97 %). The experimental analyses indicate that electrostatic attraction and surface complexation as the prominent adsorption mechanisms. Overall, this work illustrates an applicable strategy to develop carbon-nanosheets and their successful application to remove toxic metals from water matrices.

In this study, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) were first assembled via the chemical co-precipitation, and high-quality carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials were synthesized using a heat-treatment process. The internal and morphological characteristics of hexagonal Star ZIF-8 were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical sensor with a good response to Cd(II) was prepared via square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with Star ZIF-8 nanomaterial-modified glassy carbon electrodes. The main parameters were adjusted to obtain the optimal stripping response and a wide linear range. Concurrently, under the calculation of SWASV, the sensitivity of Star ZIF-8-Nafion/GCE to Cd(II) was increased by five orders of magnitude (0.5–230 μg/L), and the determination level was even low to 0.48 μg/L. Based on the high anti-interference ability and stability of the sensor, the application potential of Star ZIF-8 carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials for the detection of trace Cd(II) in was confirmed.

Visualization of the ion exchange mechanism for 137Cs and 90Sr decontamination is important for safe radioactive liquid waste reprocessing and emergency response improvement in the event of a nuclear accident. Here, the remediation of Cs+ and Sr2+ was achieved through ion exchange using a cadmium selenidostannate, [CH3NH3]3[NH4]3Cd4Sn3Se13·3H2O (CdSnSe-1), with rapid exchange kinetics, high β/γ radiation resistances, broad pH durability and facile elution. The framework constructed from mono-lacunary supertetrahedral clusters features a great negative charge density of 3.27 × 10−3 that accounts for the superhigh exchange capacities of 371.4 (Cs+) and 128.4 mg g−1 (Sr2+). Single-crystal structural analysis on the exchanger during the “pristine–ion exchange–elution” cycle supplies instructive information to elucidate the uptake and recycle mechanism for Cs+ and Sr2+. The broken symmetry of the cluster caused by a vacant site, combined with the co-templating effects of mixed methylammonium/ammonium, contributes to the formation of voids I and II that show adsorption activity for both Cs+ and K+ ions. In comparison, the divalent Sr2+ ions with higher hydration degree exchange with (alkyl)ammonium cations in a 1 : 2 molar ratio, resulting in its location at a new void (III) closer to the framework and thus a higher binding strength. The energy variation during the adsorption process based on a DFT calculation illustrates the high efficiency of CdSnSe-1 for capture of both Cs+ and Sr2+. This “visualized” ion exchange underlines the robustness and flexibility of CdSnSe-1 as a Cs+ and Sr2+ trapper, and reveals the deeper structure–function relationship from a new surface interaction viewpoint.

Reactions of polycarboxylate ligand (2,2′-H 2 bpdc or H 3 OABDC), N-donor auxiliary ligand (4-bpmh) with Cd(II) salts under solvothermal conditions resulted in two coordination polymers formulated as [Cd(2,2′-bpdc)(4-bpmh)(H 2 O)] n ·n(H 2 O) ( 1 ) and [Cd 3 (OABDC) 2 (4-bpmh) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ] n ·2n(H 2 O) ( 2 ) (2,2′-H 2 bpdc = diphenic acid, H 3 OABDC = 5-oxyacetate isophthalic acid, and 4-bpmh is N,N-bis-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-hydrazine). Meanwhile, the investigations of luminescent performances and thermal stabilities suggest that the two compounds are candidate materials for the fluorescent emitting material. The assessment of their application values on the infantile bronchial pneumonia was carried out and their specific mechanism was investigated in the meantime.

Adsorption has been deemed as one of the most efficient technologies for the removal of heavy metals from water because of its diversity of adsorbents, low cost, and simple operation. In this study, acrylic acid underwent free radical polymerization in an aqueous solution of lignocellulose extracted from peanut shells (PS) to form a porous double network hydrogel adsorbent, PS(H)-PAA. The PS(H)-PAA hydrogel had high water permeability and a porous network structure, which could provide a fast channel for metal ions diffusion from solution into hydrogel and gave rise to good adsorption performance. The adsorption process of heavy metal ions on the PS(H)-PAA hydrogel was identified to be a spontaneous endothermic adsorption and reached kinetic equilibrium within only 10 min for Pb(II) and 60 min for Cd(II) at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L using 0.5 g/L of adsorbent. According to a Langmuir model, at T =313 K the maximum theoretical adsorption capacities were as high as 250.42 and 109.89 mg/g for Pb(II) (pH 5) and Cd(II) (pH 6), respectively. Moreover, a PS(H)-PAA hydrogel showed good adsorption performance over a pH range of 4–9. The surface properties, dimensional morphology, and thermal stability of the adsorbents were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and derivative thermogravimetry. The adsorption behavior under different conditions (such as pH, contact time, ion strength, and interfering ions) and the adsorption mechanism were studied. The adsorption mechanism indicated that oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups play a major role in the adsorption process, primarily through chemical interactions, and secondarily through physical interactions. In addition, these adsorbents exhibited strong chemical stability, had very high swelling ratios in water, and could be recycled easily. These results indicate the developed PS(H)-PAA hydrogel is an environmentally friendly and potentially effective adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals.

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction is regarded as a promising strategy for the sustainable conversion of greenhouse gas. However, it still remains a significant challenge to manipulate the selectivity and activity. Herein, amorphous and porous Cd modified by sulfur (P–Cd|S) is synthesized by a p-block sulfur dopant. In comparison with unmodified Cd metal, the P–Cd|S architecture exhibits superior activity for selective CO generation, indicating that the sulfur dopant enables a selectivity shift from formic acid to CO. The high selectivity of P–Cd|S is partially ascribed to the local alkalization and suppression of hydrogen evolution as indicated by the finite element analysis. In-depth mechanistic investigations by operando Raman, Infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with theory calculations indicate that the covalently hybridized sp band system with dual collaborative sites (Cd δ + and S δ − ) gives rise to a strong interplay with CO 2 molecules and carbonaceous species, leading to the natural elimination of linear correlation among intermediates binding for d-band metals and the convenient modulation of selectivity toward CO versus HCOOH.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental toxicant and a nonessential metal. Cd can attack a wide range of organs, such as the liver, kidney, lung, ovary, testis, brain, and muscle in vertebrates. Among these organs, the testis might be the most sensitive organ to Cd toxicity. Metallothionein (MT) is a cysteine-rich protein with a low molecular weight, that can bind with Cd and eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Hydrogen peroxide, which as a crucial type of ROS that is induced by Cd, can be eliminated by catalase (CAT) in the self-protection of cells and to realize Cd toxicity resistance. To investigate the functions of MT and CAT in the testis of Cynops orientalis , we cloned the full-length MT and CAT genes of C. orientalis for the first time. Immunofluorescence results demonstrated that MT and CAT were expressed in Sertoli cells and all spermatogenic cells in the testis of C. orientalis . The results of the ultrastructural damage assay demonstrated that there were various impairments, which included organelle vacuolization, abnormal chromatin distribution, and apoptotic bodies, in somatic cells that were exposed to Cd. However, the anomalies of spermatozoa were located mainly in the mid-piece and head, many of which showed severely impaired structures. The results demonstrated that MT and CAT expression had distinct patterns in response to various Cd concentrations: an increase in MT mRNA levels with elevated Cd levels and a persistent increase in CAT mRNA levels with elevated Cd levels. These results suggested that MT and CAT play roles in Cd toxicity resistance in the testis and that the expression of CAT may be a better biomarker than the expression of MT for assessing Cd pollution.

In this study, thiourea reduced graphene oxide/NaA zeolite composite (tGO-Zeo) was successfully prepared by a facile two-step synthetic route and used as an efficient adsorbent for removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Characterization of the composite material showed that tGO was entrapped within zeolite crystalline particles and intimately interacted with the zeolite framework. Furthermore, the presence of tGO considerably reduced zeolite crystal size and altered crystal morphology, turning cubic zeolite crystals of micrometer size into nanometer irregular particles. Batch adsorption experiment for Cd(II) removal was conducted and the adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo and Zeo (zeolite) were determined. It was shown that doped tGO significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of zeolite by 31.54%. The adsorption mechanism differs for tGO-Zeo and Zeo, and tGO-Zeo has higher affinity for Cd(II). The adsorption capacity of tGO-Zeo with a tGO doping amount of 1.26% (wt%) was estimated to be 196 mg/g (1.74 mM/g) at 30 °C and superior to most previously reported zeolite based composites, which often contain large amounts of dopants . The effects of pH and ionic strength on adsorption suggest that ion exchange and coordination are responsible for Cd(II) adsorption by tGO-Zeo. Humic acid can slightly increase Cd(II) adsorption performance of tGO-Zeo, which may be due to tGO-Zeo—humic acid—Cd(II) complexes formation. Therefore, tGO-Zeo composite is a cost-effective and eco-friendly adsorbent for efficient removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions.

Abstract In this study, a new-style “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy has been developed to prepare graphene oxide/organic functionalized silica nanoparticles (GO/OSNs) composites. The crucial point of the strategy is that the OSNs have positive charge by adding Hydrochloric acid (HCl). Four types of OSNs were prepared via one-pot sol–gel reaction of four different kinds of organosilane. Then the positively charge OSNs and negatively charge GO could effectively composite via charge interaction. The GO/OSNs were characterized by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission electronic microscope (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy might be a general method for the fabrication of GO/OSNs. This research provides a new approach for the fabrication of GO/OSNs composites with other OSNs structures. In addition, the application of GO/OSNs in the adsorption of Cd(II) has also been investigated, which included adsorption properties of four GO/OSNs, parameters of adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics.
GO/OSNs composites were fabricated based on a new-style “ex-situ charge interaction” strategy. OSNs were first prepared via one-pot sol–gel reaction. Furthermore, they were given positive charge by adding HCl. Finally, GO/OSNs were fabricated by charge interaction of between GO and OSNs.
