Herein, Mn-doped carbon dots (Mn-CDs) were prepared and used as a reducing agent to reduce PtCl 6 2− to platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs), forming a stable nanozyme of Mn-CDs@Pt NPs. The prepared Mn-CDs@Pt nanozyme exhibited high oxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a low Michaelis-Menten constant ( K m ) value of 0.0545 mM and a high maximum initial velocity ( V max ) value of 3.42 × 10 −7 M s −1 . By exploiting the excellent oxidase-like activity of Mn-CDs@Pt nanozyme and combining the thiol-ene Michael addition between glutathione (GSH) and acrylamide (AA), a sensitive colorimetric detection interface for AA was fabricated. Using UV–vis measurement, the colorimetric sensor for AA detection displayed a broad linear detection range from 0.05 to 5000 μM and a detection limit (LOD) of 0.0371 μM. In addition, a smartphone-assisted detection of AA yielded a linear range from 5 to 5000 μM with an LOD of 4.35 μM. The colorimetric sensor was applied for AA detection in real samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries in the range of 94.8–110.4%. Moreover, the detection results of AA in real samples were in good consistency with those detected using the standard method of HPLC, suggesting that the proposed colorimetric method possesses potential for AA detection in food safety and quality monitoring.

To improve CdS photocatalytic activity , both Cu x Cd 1- x S nanorods and Cu 2 S@CdS p-n heterostructures have been prepared with a simple solvothermal method . The results showed that the maximum H 2 generation rate is equal to 10 mmol h −1 g −1 and 12.1 mmol h −1 g −1 for samples 0.3-Cu 2 S@CdS and Cu 0.1 Cd 0.9 S, respectively, which are nearly 9 and 12 times larger than that of CdS (1.2 mmol h −1 g −1 ) without using Pt as the co-catalyst. The measurements of the light absorption revealed that the samples Cu 2 S@CdS p-n heterostructures and Cu x Cd 1- x S nanorods have an increased visible light absorption. Band structure revealed that Cu 2 S@CdS p-n composite is a type-II heterostructure, which facilitates the separation of photoexcited charge carriers . Furthermore, as the Cu-doping CdS introduced a defect level , which induced the increase of carrier density, and the defect energy level in Cu 0.1 Cd 0.9 S and the band energy in CdS form a type-II heterostructure. Due to the appropriate band structure and stronger light absorption, Cu 2 S@CdS p-n heterostructures and Cu + -doping CdS demonstrated an improved photocatalytic activity and stability.

Selective hydrogenolysis of abundant C–O bonds of β-O-4 linkages in natural lignin or lignin models has been considered as a key strategy for the generation of value-added organic chemicals. Herein, we report a mild, efficient, and selective photocatalytic strategy for hydrogenolytic cleavage of lignin β-O-4 models by using Ni-containing polyoxometalate (POM) catalysts and CdS quantum dots. Upon blue LED light irradiation, the present photocatalytic system can effectively transform various lignin β-O-4 models to the corresponding hydrogenolysis products (phenols and ketones) with >95% conversion and >93% product selectivity. A tentative photocatalytic mechanism is proposed based on various experimental and spectroscopic analyses. The facile strategy presented in our work could be extended to the photocatalytic preparation of various value-added chemicals from natural biomass or other biomass derivatives in the near future.

Carbon dots (CDs) are versatile nanomaterials with tunable luminescent properties. We used a natural plant kaempferol as a carbon source to synthesize multicolor CDs by reacting it with various nitrogen sources. Blue, green, and red CDs (B-CDs, G-CDs, and R-CDs) with emission wavelengths of 445 nm, 510 nm, and 600 nm respectively were successfully synthesized. Their photoluminescence quantum yields of are up to 37.4%, 20.1%, and 30.8%, respectively. Surface analysis revealed abundant nitrogen groups influencing luminescence. B-CDs and G-CDs show excitation-dependent emissions, indicating a potential correlation between their luminescence and particle sizes, while R-CDs exhibit excitation-independent emission, suggesting they belong to molecular state CDs. All three CDs exhibit stable luminescent performance, as well as good salt resistance and photobleaching resistance. The practical application of multicolored CDs in anti-counterfeiting fluorescent inks was further explored. This work offers a straightforward, eco-friendly route to synthesize multicolor CDs.

The selective breaking of the Cβ–O bond has great potential for the conversion of lignin into high-value aromatic monomers. In the present work, we designed a CdS–SH/TiO2 heterojunction photocatalyst for the efficient selective breaking of the Cβ–O bond. The surface modification of CdS by –SH promoted close contact between the catalyst and lignin and further promoted the Fermi level matching with TiO2. A type-II heterojunction was constructed by CdS–SH and TiO2 nanosheets to enhance the light absorption range and further increase the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, resulting in high catalytic activity. Finally, 85% phenol and 87% acetophenone yields were obtained under mild light irradiation using 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol as the model substrate. Several control experiments, along with DFT calculations, indicate that the reaction pathway is more likely to involve the oxidation of Cα–OH to form Cα═O initially, followed by the activation of Cβ–O, which is then reduced to further form aromatic monomers. This work achieves the efficient selectivity of lignin depolymerization and provides a reference for the design of heterojunction photocatalysts in the valorization of lignin.

PCR-based techniques routinely employed for the detection of mutated linear DNA molecules, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), require large nucleotide sections on both sides of the mutation for primer annealing. This means that DNA fragments with a mutation positioned closer to the extremities are unlikely to be detected. Thus, sensors capable of recognizing linear DNA with characteristic mutations closer to the ends would be advantageous over the state-of-the-art approaches. Here, an electrochemiluminescence-resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) biosensor comprising capped CdS quantum dots and hairpin DNA probes labeled with Au nanoparticles was developed for the detection of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ctDNA carrying the critical T790M lung cancer mutation. The ECL-RET system detected different DNA molecules including single-stranded 18-nucleotides (nt) and 40-nt as well as double-stranded 100-nt with the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) coding for T790M located either in the middle or only 7 nt from one end. For all target DNA, the sensor’s limits of detection (LODs) were in the aM range, with excellent selectivity. It was the case of 100-nt target linear ctDNA fragments with LODs of 8.1 and 3.4 aM when the EGFR T790M SNP was either in the middle or at the end, respectively. These results show that ECL-RET systems can sense mutations in DNA fragments that would remain undetected by standard techniques.

Dual-site lattice doping in semiconductor materials is highly promising for photocatalysis as it can tune the sub-band electronic structure and charge distribution of the photocatalyst. However, it is challenging to precisely regulate the band structure by dual-site doping using the same heteroatom. Herein, we report the homogeneous dual-site P lattice doping in CdS quantum rods, i.e. P is homogeneously doped into both substitutional site of S and interstitial site, leading to negative shift of valence and conduction bands with extraordinary visible-light excitation efficiency. The electrons generated in the newly designed photocatalyst have strong redox potential in reducing H + into H 2 in photocatalysis. By introducing nontrivial co-catalyst Ni 3 C quantum dots onto the surface of P-CdS quantum rods, the apparent quantum efficiency of the catalyst achieves 15.7% at 435 nm, which is 5 times higher than that of pristine CdS.

Herein, a novel actinomorphic flower-like ZnO/Au/CdS nanorods ternary composite photocatalyst is prepared to extend the light-responsive range, reduce the photogenerated charge carriers recombination, and ultimately improve the water splitting performance. Flower-like ZnO nanorods are synthesized by a chemical bath method and the CdS nanoparticles are sensitized by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method. Then the Au nanoparticles as co-catalysts are introduced by the photodeposition method to modify the interface of ZnO/CdS for reducing the photogenerated electron recombination rate and further improving the performance of water splitting. Detailed characterizations and measurements are employed to analyse the crystallinity, morphology, composition, and optical properties of the flower-like ZnO/Au/CdS nanorods samples. As a result, the flower-like ZnO/Au/CdS nanorod samples present significantly enhanced water splitting performance with a high gas evolution rate of 502.2 μmol/g/h, which is about 22.5 and 1.5 times higher than that of the pure ZnO sample and ZnO/CdS sample. The results demonstrate that the flower-like ZnO/Au/CdS nanorods ternary composite materials have great application potential in photocatalytic water splitting for the hydrogen evolution field.Keywords:flower-like ZnO nanorods;Au;CdS;photocatalytic water splitting

Photocatalysis technology has received much attention on the treatment of antibiotics residues. In this paper, CdS quantum dots (QDs)-decorated TiO 2 (CDS-T for short) have been prepared successfully through a photodeposition method and utilized as photocatalysts for degradation of metronidazole (MTZ). Under visible light irradiation for 60 min, the degradation ratio of MTZ over CDS-T-3 that was prepared by 3 h of photodeposition reached up to 90.9%, which was 1.5 times than that reached over commercial CdS. The decoration of CdS QDs onto TiO 2 can enlarge light absorption range to visible region. Furthermore, greatly improved separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers is realized through forming heterojunction. Activity control experiments demonstrate that O 2 · − serve as the main active species, while ·OH and holes (h + ) play secondary roles on the MTZ degradation. Moreover, electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, terephthalic acid photoluminescence (TA-PL) technique and N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD) method confirm that larger amounts of active species are generated from CDS-T-3 than that from commercial CdS under visible light. This study can not only offer an easy method to prepare CdS quantum dots-decorated TiO 2 but also enlarge its application in solving the problem of metronidazole contamination.

Graphical Photocatalysis : A 0D-1D BPQDs/CdS composite with high-quality interface was prepared by a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach. The optimized H 2 evolution rate of 3 wt % BPQDs/CdS can reach up to 9.9 mmol g −1 h −1 . The enhanced activity is attributed to the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons from CdS to BPQDs, which is thoroughly demonstrated by time-resolved TAS spectra. Constructing a high-quality interface with strong coupling interaction is highly desirable in composite photocatalysts for the efficient interfacial charge transfer. Herein, we prepared black phosphorus quantum dots/CdS (BPQDs/CdS) binary composites with tight interfacial contact via a facile electrostatic self-assembly approach for efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The optimized H 2 evolution rate of 3 wt % BPQDs/CdS can reach up to 9.9 mmol g −1 h −1 in lactic acid aqueous solution, 99 and 5.5 times greater than that of pristine BPQDs and CdS, respectively. Benefiting from the strong interface interaction between CdS and BPQDs in well-contacted BPQDs/CdS composites, efficient charge separation can be achieved, leading to enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity. Notably, the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons from CdS to BPQDs was unambiguously confirmed by time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy.

Particulate photocatalysts developed for the solar energy-driven reduction of the greenhouse gas CO 2 have a small product range and low specificity. Hybrid photosynthesis expands the number of products with photocatalysts harvesting sunlight and transferring charges to microbes harboring versatile metabolisms for bioproduction. Besides CO 2 , abiotic photocatalysts have been employed to increase microbial production yields of reduced compounds from organic carbon substrates. Most single-reactor hybrid photosynthesis systems comprise CdS assembled in situ by microbial activity. This approach limits optimization of the morphology, crystal structure, and crystallinity of CdS for higher performance, which is usually done via synthesis methods incompatible with life. Here, shape and activity optimized CdS nanorods were hydrothermally produced and subsequently applied to Cupriavidus necator for the heterotrophic and autotrophic production of the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). C. necator with CdS NR under light produced 1.5 times more PHB when compared to the same bacterium with suboptimal commercially-available CdS. Illuminated C. necator with CdS NR synthesized 1.41 g PHB from fructose over 120 h and 28 mg PHB from CO 2 over 48 h. Interestingly, the beneficial effect of CdS NR was specific to C. necator as the metabolism of other microbes often employed for bioproduction including yeast and bacteria was negatively impacted. These results demonstrate that hybrid photosynthesis is more productive when the photocatalyst characteristics are optimized via a separated synthesis process prior to being coupled with microbes. Furthermore, bioproduction improvement by CdS-based photocatalyst requires specific microbial species highlighting the importance of screening efforts for the development of performant hybrid photosynthesis.

Developing non-noble-metal cocatalysts is essential for the large-scale implementation of solar-driven H 2 production technology, but still remains a great challenge. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene coupled CdS nanostructures are fabricated via one-step gamma-ray radiation-induced reduction in ambient conditions. By subsequent alkaline treatment, a novel cocatalyst of carbon supported amorphous TiO 2 nanosheets (denoted as aTiO 2 -C) is derived from Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS to form aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites. The prepared aTiO 2 -C/CdS nanocomposites with cyclability achieve a H 2 evolution rate of 1.48 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 under visible-light illumination, which is 6.4 and 7.0 times greater than that of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x /CdS and P-CdS, respectively. The oxygen vacancies in aTiO 2 -C cocatalysts are revealed to act as electron trapping sites to facilitate the transfer of photoexcited electrons and boost photoactivity. Further, the electronic interaction between CdS and aTiO 2 -C prevents Cd 2+ from leaching and thus enhances photostability. The results of this work may guide the rational design of viable cost-effective cocatalysts in solar-to-chemical energy conversion and beyond.
