Fe/Ce bimetallic MOF with synergistic effect for green and efficient low-temperature catalytic upgrading of heavy oil

Chi Li,JiXiang Guo,Li Wang,PengCheng Xue,WenLong Zhang,KunPeng Li

Heavy oil in-situ catalytic technology faces challenges like complex reservoirs, harsh environments, and high viscosity. Developing efficient in-situ catalysts is a key research focus. This study synthesized a Fe/Ce bimetallic organic framework (Fe/Ce-MOF) that addresses critical issues in heavy oil recovery. Under mild conditions at 140℃ with 0.5 wt% catalyst and 2 wt% hydrogen donor for 24 h, Fe/Ce-MOF achieved a 90.15 % reduction in viscosity and a 16.51 % decrease in asphaltene content. The characterization analysis and simulation results collectively reveal that the bimetallic MOF has a synergistic effect. On the one hand, the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle promotes the cracking of large molecules into smaller ones. On the other hand, the Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ redox cycle facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies (O v ). Under the combined effect of the dynamic redox cycles of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ , the electron transfer efficiency of the catalyst is significantly enhanced, increasing the rate of heavy oil pyrolysis and hydrogenation. The coexistence of Fe and Ce modifies the charge distribution in heavy oil MOF, enhancing Lewis acidity and promoting interaction with heteroatoms. Additionally, the coexistence of mesoporous and macropores in the bimetallic framework not only facilitated mass transfer and fully utilized the catalytic activity of active sites but also effectively resolves the issue of traditional microporous MOFs are prone to being blocked by larger asphaltene molecules, thereby improving their operational stability. This study proposes a novel strategy for the design and development of in-situ catalytic viscosity reduction catalysts for heavy oil, highlighting the high efficiency, excellent stability, and environmental compatibility of bimetallic MOF in low-temperature catalytic pyrolysis, and demonstrating their significant potential for practical applications.

Fabrication of Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe), its adsorption performance, and the mechanisms to adsorb phosphate from water

Zhen Jiao,Zhijia Miao,Heluan An,Qing Li,Xiangyuan Meng

Water eutrophication caused by phosphate emissions has become a serious environmental issue. In this study, we used the solvothermal method to prepare a novel Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe). Scanning electron microscope observations suggest that Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) consisted of irregular polyhedrons in the size range of tens of micrometers. Spectroscopy results show that cerium atoms (Ce) were successfully doped into the MIL-100(Fe) frameworks. The specific surface area and pore size of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) were 2.6 m 2 /g and 3.4 nm, respectively. Adsorptive kinetics indicated that the pseudo-second-order model with a high correlation coefficient of ( R 2 : 0.9950) fitted better than the pseudo first-order model with R 2 of 0.9436. The adsorptive isotherms showed that for these adsorption reactions, the Langmuir model matched much better than the Freundlich model for this adsorption. These facts suggest that adsorption is chemical sorption, which occurred on a homogeneous surface. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) was as high as 12.03 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) depended strongly on the solution pH, ionic strength, and the coexisted ions. The study also found that the precipitation reaction and complexation interaction might be dominated in the adsorption. This study may contribute to the design of bimetal organic frameworks, and might add new insights into the removal of phosphate.

Investigation of photocatalytic properties based on Fe and Ce Co-doped ZnO via hydrothermal method and first principles

Nan Qing Yang,Jin Li,Ya Nan Wang,Jie Ma

In this study, Fe and Ce co-doped ZnO (Zn 1-2x Fe x Ce x O, x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.04) was prepared through hydrothermal synthesis , followed by annealing. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy, and the photocatalytic efficiency of the samples on the organic dye, methylene blue, under simulated sunlight was studied. Based on first principles, the influence of doping on the band structure of the samples was studied. The experimental results show that co-doping ratios affect the performance of ZnO. When the doping concentration was 3 at%, the red shift of the UV–vis spectrum of the material was the most obvious, and the PL of the material was inhibited. Compared with pure ZnO, the degradation rate increased from 72.6% to 98.5%. As the doping concentration increased, the photocatalytic performance of the materials began to decrease. Simulations showed that the incorporation of small amounts of Fe and Ce reduced the band gap of ZnO and introduced a shallow donor level in the band gap, effectively inhibiting the recombination of carriers, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance of the material. When the doping ratio was increased from 3% to 4%, the band gap became wider. These results indicate that Fe and Ce co-doped ZnO has potential applications in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and provides a method for improving photocatalytic performance by inhibiting carrier recombination.

A multifunctional Ce(IV)-based coagulant with integrated oxidation and adsorption for efficient removal of diverse arsenic species

Jiaojie He,Qingwang Cai,Shiyang Yao,Shiqi Wang,Xinyu Zhang,Wei Wang,Zhiling Guo

CAN possessed three functions: oxidation, adsorption, and coagulation. • CAN removed anionic arsenic mainly through inner-sphere complexation and reducing steric hindrance. • Ce(IV) in-situ oxidized As(III) to As(V), which was then immobilized and coagulated. • Pre-hydrolyzed CAN B (B>0) resisted pH fluctuations and achieved low residual cerium. • CAN flocs were large and produced a loose cake layer with less pore blocking, reducing membrane fouling. Arsenic contamination is widespread in groundwater and surface water, with species including As(V), As(III), and organic arsenic. This study developed a Ce(IV)-based coagulant, CAN, with dual adsorption and oxidation capabilities for arsenic removal. For organic arsenic, CAN outperformed PAC in removing p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) and disodium methylarsonate (DSMA); for roxarsone (ROX), CAN achieved > 99% removal at only 1/8 of the PAC dosage. The large ionic radius and high coordination number of Ce(IV) enable stronger binding to organic arsenic ligands via inner-sphere As-O-Ce complexation, overcoming steric hindrance that limits Al(III). For As(III), Ce(IV) exhibits oxidation-adsorption-coagulation synergy, converting As(III) to As(V) and immobilizing it in situ. To further optimize As(III) removal, pre-hydrolyzed CAN B (B>0) was synthesized; with pre-ozonation, it reached > 96% efficiency and residual Ce of 0.006–0.024 mg/L, due to flower-like nanocrystal clusters. CAN hydrolysates are mainly Ce 4 and Ce 6 species, forming large flocs (D 50 > 160–200 μm) and a loose, porous cake layer in the coagulation-ultrafiltration, sustaining ∼70% membrane flux (J/J₀). In real groundwater, CAN resisted competing ions and maintained high removal. Overall, the combined oxidation, adsorption, and coagulation functions of Ce(IV) salts broaden their applications and provide new strategies for treating water containing heavy metal oxyanions. Non-radical pathway dominated catalytic oxidation of As(III) with stoichiometric H2O2 over nanoceria

Chao Shan,Yan Liu,Yuhao Huang,Bingcai Pan

Heterogeneous catalysis is a promising approach to achieve efficient As(III) oxidation by H 2 O 2 at circumneutral pH. However, radical-attack pathways dominated catalytic As(III) oxidation over most metal oxides is undesirably associated with low utilization of H 2 O 2 induced by rapid self-quenching of radicals. In this study, we developed a non-radical catalytic route to improve H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency for catalytic As(III) oxidation based on nanoceria. The performance and mechanism of As(III) oxidation by H 2 O 2 was investigated by employing four types of nanoceria with different crystallite sizes (9.1–80.6 nm). At the H 2 O 2 /As(III) molar ratio of 2.0, nanoceria exhibited crystallite size-dependent catalytic activity for oxidation of As(III) over a wide pH range (5–9). Based on comprehensive study including scavenging, enzymatic, and pretreatment experiments and miscellaneous spectroscopy techniques, the catalytic As(III) oxidation over nanoceria was proved to be mainly mediated by the non-radical Ce-hydroperoxo surface complexes, whilst the surface hydroperoxyl radical served as a minor oxidant. In contrast, the roles of dissolved oxygen, homogeneous H 2 O 2 , and OH radical were all negligible. No obvious interconversion of Ce(III)/Ce(IV) was observed by XPS for the catalytic process. Such non-radical pathway enabled a stoichiometric reaction with high H 2 O 2 utilization efficiency (90.5%–122%). Moreover, nanoceria could be recycled for five consecutive runs without desorption/regeneration treatment. This study sheds new light on the development of nanoceria-based catalytic processes for efficient oxidation of As(III).

Constructing bi-functional Ce-MOF on carbon fiber endowing epoxy coating with excellent anti-corrosion and erosion wear resistance

Qingyuan Zhao,Wenjie Zhao,Yinghao Wu

The limited interfacial combination between CF and polymer matrix caused by the chemical inertness of CF surface greatly restricts the protective capability of carbon fiber reinforced polymer coatings (CFRPCs), which could not effectively resist the impact of external forces, especially in the severe and complicated ocean environment (like deep-sea area and splash zone). Hence, it is the crux to enhance the interface compatibility and interface strength between fiber and resin. Based on the reliable compatibility between imidazole and epoxy as well as the corrosion inhibition effects of cerium-based compounds, a kind of bi-functional metal-organic framework (MOF) called the cerium-imidazole framework (Ce-MI) was constructed on the CFs surface via in-situ growth method to improve the interface compatibility and interface strength of fiber and resin and further increase protective performance of epoxy (EP) coating under the simulated deep-sea area and splash zone . After 168 h immersion under alternating hydrostatic pressure, CF@Ce-MI/EP coating displayed impressive impermeability and anti-corrosion performance, and the interfaces of fiber/epoxy adhered firmly. After the erosion wear test, the volume loss and mass loss of CF@Ce-MI/EP were decreased by 23.77% and 14.80%, respectively, compared with CF/EP. Finally, we discussed the protective mechanism of composite coating to reveal the different processes of interface failure caused by the high pressure and the impact of solid particles , respectively.

Self-assembly of hollow spherical nanocatalysts with encapsulated Pt NPs and the effect of Ce-dipping on catalytic activity

Hongxing Zhang,Yiwei Zhang,Yuming Zhou,Chao Zhang,Xiaoli Sheng,Shuo Zhao,Jiasheng Fang,Mingyu Zhang

This article reports a facile and controllable one-step method to construct Pt@hollow mesoporous SiO2 (Pt@HMSiO2) nanoparticles (NPs). To enhance the catalytic activity, cerium species were impregnated into Pt@HMSiO2 NPs, fabricating highly reactive Pt–CeO2@HMSiO2 NPs. To verify the successful synthesis of the Pt@HMSiO2 and Pt–CeO2@HMSiO2 NPs, and study the influence of CeO2 species on the catalytic performance, the as-prepared NPs were characterized by several techniques, including SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET and UV-vis analyses. In this work, the reduction of 4-NP was employed as a model reaction to test the catalytic performance. Compared to Pt@HMSiO2, the Pt–CeO2@HMSiO2 NPs show higher catalytic activity, because of the co-catalysis of CeO2 NPs. However, the excess amount of CeO2 NPs would lead to a lower catalytic activity, due to the blocking of the catalyst pore. In addition, the Pt–CeO2@HMSiO2 NPs show a high thermal stability due to the protection of the SiO2 shell. Meanwhile, we have also used the reaction of propane dehydrogenation to further verify the excellent catalytic stability of Pt–CeO2@HMSiO2 NPs. This strategy is novel, albeit efficient, and can be extended to the preparation of other nanocatalysts.

A novel coating method for CE capillary using carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin-modified magnetic microparticles as stationary for electrochromatography enantioseparation

Sun Xiaodong,Guo Jie,Yu Tao,Du Yingxiang,Feng Zijie,Zhao Shiyuan,Huang Zhifeng,Liu Jie

Magnetic microparticles (MMPs) have been extensively studied and aroused considerable interest in separation science owing to their superior characteristics. In this paper, a novel coated capillary with carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic microparticles (CD-MMPs) as stationary phase was constructed and then applied to establish an open-tubular capillary electrochromatography enantioseparation system. The preparation of the CD-MMP-coated open-tubular column was very convenient because the coating of the magnetic microparticles onto the capillary column could be easily manipulated by an external magnetic field. The preparation conditions of the coated capillary such as magnetic field intensity and coating time are discussed in detail. The new constructed CD-MMP capillary system was applied to separate enantiomers of several racemic drugs. Compared to the uncoated capillary system, obviously preferable separations of tested enantiomers were obtained. Several important parameters affecting the enantioseparation, such as CM-β-CD concentration, running buffer pH, organic solvent, and applied voltage, were systematically optimized. Furthermore, satisfactory repeatability and chemical stability of this new CD-MMP capillary system were achieved in the experiment. ᅟ

Suppression of platinum sintering on Pt–M/ZSM-22 (M = Ce, La, and Re) catalyst for n-dodecane isomerization

Qiang Ning,Huaike Zhang,Yurong He,Zhiqiang Chen,Suyao Liu,Jie Ren

Small Pt particles (about 1.2 nm) were highly dispersed on ZSM-22 zeolites via a strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) method and exhibited a promotion effect on the catalytic performance in n-dodecane isomerization in comparison with the conventional catalyst. Several promoters (Ce, La, and Re) were introduced to further improve the aggregation resistance of the small Pt particles. A series of characterization including H2-TPR, XPS and STEM as well as DFT calculations provided solid evidence that the strong interaction between Pt and promoter species not only effectively hinders the Pt aggregation but also alters the electronic state of the Pt sites. Moreover, Ce and La promoters also lead to a slightly improved amount of B acid sites determined by Py-FTIR. Thus, improved activity and selectivity were achieved on a Ce-modified catalyst due to the better balanced bifunctionality between the slightly increased acidity of zeolites and electron-deficiency of Pt. The electron-rich Pt sites are responsible for the significant increase of CH4 selectivity and the decrease of total isomer selectivity in n-dodecane isomerization. In addition, a high-temperature reduction test revealed the higher isomerization activity and selectivity (about 10% higher than the unmodified catalyst) of the Ce-modified catalyst owing to the strong bond of Pt–O–Ce, further confirming the positive effect of the Ce promoter on the sintering resistance of small Pt particles.

Carbon precursor engineering in chemical looping co-gasification of microalgae-lignocellulosic biomass enabled by Ce-doped perovskite oxygen carriers

Zhanmin Zhu,Yu Chen,Shangqing Xi,Xiaojia Wang

Biomass chemical looping co-gasification (BCLCG) offers a promising route for converting renewable biomass into controllable gaseous carbon precursors, though precise regulation of carbon distribution remains challenging. Here, we propose a carbon precursor engineering strategy via co-gasification of pine sawdust (PS) and Chlorella (CH) using Ce-doped LaFeO 3 (LFO) perovskite oxygen carriers. Ce incorporation significantly enhances lattice oxygen mobility, oxygen vacancy concentration, and structural stability. Among the samples, La 0.7 Ce 0.3 FeO 3 (L 0.7 C 0.3 FO) exhibits optimal redox performance, maintaining a high specific surface area (4.13 m 2 /g) and stable mesoporous structure after reaction while suppressing sintering-induced pore collapse. A pronounced synergistic effect is observed during PS-CH co-gasification: hydrogen-rich volatiles and intrinsic alkali/alkaline earth metals from CH promote tar cracking and char conversion, facilitating carbon redistribution toward gaseous products. At the optimal blending ratio (PS/CH = 1:2), the carbon precursor formation (CPF = CO + CH 4  + C 2 -C 4 ) reaches 0.362 Nm 3 /kg with a total gas yield of 1.268 Nm 3 /kg, and carbon utilization efficiency (CUE) reaches 67.6%. Process optimization reveals that carbon precursor formation is governed by lattice oxygen supply, steam participation, and thermal conditions. The optimal conditions (900 °C, oxygen carrier-to-biomass ratio of 1.0, steam flow rate of 0.3 mL/min) enhance CUE. This work reinterprets BCLCG as a carbon precursor engineering platform rather than conventional syngas production. The integration of Ce-doped perovskite oxygen carriers with multi-source biomass enables precise carbon distribution regulation and provides a viable pathway for efficient biomass conversion into carbon-oriented gaseous products.

Synergistic Catalysis for Dual Enhancement of Synthesis and Hydrogen Storage in NaAlH4 Using a Metallic Al-Ti-Ce Precursor

Yingjue Chen,Yan Chu,Shiwei Fang,Xiaoqi Zhang,Jie Zheng,Wubin Du,Wengang Cui,Lingchao Zhang,Xin Zhang,Yaxiong Yang,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan

NaAlH4 suffers from high kinetic barriers, causing high dehydrogenation temperatures, sluggish kinetics, poor reversibility, and low direct synthesis efficiency. Herein, a metallic Al−Ti−Ce alloy ribbon (Ti:Ce = 1:1, total 6 wt %) with a refined Al matrix (∼405 nm) and uniformly dispersed nanoscale Ti2Al20Ce and Al3Ti phases (200−360 nm) was fabricated by arc melting and melt-spinning. Used directly as the Al source, this ribbon enabled successful synthesis of NaAlH4 by ball-milling with NaH under 50 bar H2 for 36 h. The resulting composite delivered a dehydrogenation capacity of 4.73 wt % from 107.4 to 182.1 °C and a capacity retention of 91.98% over 15 cycles. The Ti−Ce synergy refines Al grains and disperses catalytic phases while also improving the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 and suppressing Al agglomeration, collectively ensuring high reactivity and sustained reversibility of the system. This work presents an effective design strategy for an integrated precursor that combines a bimetallic catalyst and an Al source, offering an alternative approach for optimizing the synthesis and hydrogen storage performance of the NaAlH4 system.

Insights into sulfur resistance of Ce-doped CaO in sorption-enhanced steam gasification: A combined DFT and experimental study

Xianyao Yan,Xinhui Ji,Jiawei Chen,Rongyue Sun,Huaqiang Chu

The sorption-enhanced steam gasification of biomass using CaO-based materials is considered a promising method for H 2 production, while the presence of H 2 S in the syngas results sulfur poisoning of the materials. In this work, DFT calculations were combined with experimental verification to elucidate the mechanism of H 2 S resistance and structural stability of Ce-doped CaO material. The theoretical results reveal that Ce-doping significantly modulates the surface electronic structure, and Ce-doped CaO surface exhibits less negative H 2 S adsorption energies and higher activation barriers for the initial dissociation steps compared with pristine CaO, thus the onset of the sulfidation reaction is inhibited. Furthermore, the formation of oxygen vacancies is energetically less favorable on Ce-doped CaO surfaces, which is a prerequisite for sulfidation reaction. Even under sulfur-poisoning conditions, the Ce-doped CaO retains superior CO 2 adsorption, and the adsorption of Ca 4 O 4 clusters demonstrates that a robust chemical anchoring effect was introduced by Ce-doping. Experimental results from 20 cycles of steam gasification of high‑sulfur Enteromorpha prolifera validate these theoretical findings, and Ce-doped CaO maintains high H 2 production and CO 2 capture performances with minimal sulfur-poisoning deactivation.
