Hierarchical Cu2O/NiFeCo layered double hydroxide nanoarrays on copper foam obtained by a self-sacrificial templated route for a highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Honglei Zhang,Yanyan Li,Jiayang Zhao,Yao Zhang,Haotian Zhang,Rui Song

The design of highly active, economical and highly stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is very important for realizing sustainable energy conversion. Herein, a Cu 2 O/NiFeCo layered double hydroxide electrode on a copper foam (CF) with a nanoarray structure (Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF) is fabricated by using Cu(OH) 2 on CF (Cu(OH) 2 /CF) as a self-sacrificial template. The prepared Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF has a unique hierarchical nanostructure, high electrochemical active area and excellent integration of Cu 2 O and NiFeCo LDH, resulting in low overpotentials of 228 mV and 269 mV for current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively, as well as an ultrasmall Tafel slope of 40 mV dec −1 . In highly alkaline 6 M KOH, a overpotential of only 213 mV can deliver a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the assembled water hydrolysis device operates stably for 50 h without a significant change in the potential in the strong alkaline solution. This high-efficiency OER performance and long-term stability make Cu 2 O/NiFeCo LDH/CF promising for practical applications.

Preparation of an electrochemical immunosensor based on a Cu/Cu2O-rGO@Au signal synergistic amplification strategy and efficient and sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein

Min Wang,Mingzhe Jiang,Xiaochen Liao,Xiao Wang,Wenjing Lai,Pengli Li,Jiajia Li,Chenglin Hong,Yu Qi

The effective amplification of the signal is the prerequisite for the ultrasensitive detection of electrochemical immunosensors. To quantitatively detect alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), we prepared a sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor. Using a gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) as the sensing platform and Cu/Cu2O-rGO@Au as the signal label, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to achieve sensitive detection of AFP. We found that the nanomaterials can undergo electro-oxidation and electro-reduction reactions between Cu(I) and Cu(II) in a buffer solution of pH = 6.0. It is worth mentioning that the incorporation of metals into metal oxide substrates is a new strategy to combine the catalytic activity of metal oxides with the electrical conductivity of metals. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which is rich in oxygen-containing groups, can load more Cu/Cu2O and Au NPs and increase the conductivity. The modification of Au NPs makes them have better biocompatibility and conductivity. Under the best detection conditions, the prepared immunosensor realizes the specific and ultrasensitive detection of AFP. The detection range is 0.01–50 ng mL−1 and the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.589 pg mL−1 (S/N = 3); meanwhile it also has good practical application ability. Therefore, this immunosensor provides an important means for the early screening and detection of AFP.

An Ultrasmall Cu/Cu2O Nanoparticle-Based Diselenide-Bridged Nanoplatform Mediating Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging and Neuronal Membrane Enhancement for Targeted Therapy of Ischemic Stroke

Jianglong Kong,Rui Zou,Runxuan Chu,Nan Hu,Jiawen Liu,Yuting Sun,Xiaohan Ge,Meiru Mao,Hongrui Yu,Yi Wang

Ischemic stroke is one of the major causes of death and disability worldwide, and an effective and timely treatment of ischemic stroke has been a challenge because of the narrow therapeutic window and the poor affinity with thrombus of the thrombolytic agent. In this study, rPZDCu, a multifunctional nanoparticle (NP) with the effects of thrombolysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and neuroprotection, was synthesized based on an ultrasmall Cu4.6O NP, the thrombolytic agent rt-PA, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is a major component of the neuronal membrane. rPZDCu showed strong thrombus-targeting ability, which was achieved by the platelet cell membrane coating on the NP surface, and a good thrombolytic effect in both the common carotid artery clot model and embolic middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model of rats. Furthermore, rPZDCu exhibited a good escape from the phagocytosis of macrophages, effective promotion of the polarization of microglia, and efficient recovery of neurobiological and behavioral functions in the embolic MCAO model of rats. This is a heuristic report of (1) the Cu0/Cu+ NP for the treatments of brain diseases, (2) the integration of DHA and ROS scavengers for central nervous system therapies, and (3) diselenide-based ROS-responsive NPs for ischemic stroke treatments. This study also offers an example of cell membrane-camouflaged stimuli-responsive nanomedicine for brain-targeting drug delivery.

An electrochemical aptasensor based on catalytic hairpin self-assembly and co-amplification of AuPd/Fe-MOF and Au/Cu2O for ultrasensitive detection of Cd2+

He Jintao,Zhang Baozhong,Tian Panpan,Li Ying,Liu Xiaolong,Ma Xinyue,Lin Min,Zhu Huina,Chen Hanyu,Li Liping,He Baoshan

Cadmium (Cd), a typical heavy metal not essential for the human body, can cause harm to the liver and kidneys upon exposure. Hence, rapid cadmium detection in the environment is of utmost importance. This research presents an effective approach for detecting divalent cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) using a sensitive dual hairpin (HP) electrochemical aptasensor. The aptasensor incorporates AuPd/Fe-MOF as signal labels and Au/Cu 2 O as the substrate material, and the rapid detection of divalent cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) was based on catalytic hairpin self-assembly (CHA), as the recognition strategy. Au/Cu 2 O increased the specific surface area of the electrode and provided abundant sites for capturing the complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (CDNA) probe. The electrochemical signal is then amplified through synergistic catalytic hydrogen peroxide with AuPd/Fe-MOF, thereby enhancing the aptasensor's sensitivity. Moreover, the dual HP design effectively reduces the likelihood of non-specific capture and minimizes false positives. In this study, various analytical techniques were utilized to characterize the material and evaluate the aptasensor's performance. The morphological characteristics of the material were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to analyze the elemental composition and distribution of the material, respectively. The electrochemical behavior of the sensor was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV), while electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) helped understand the aptasensor's assembly process. Furthermore, the aptasensor's performance was assessed using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under the optimized experimental conditions, the constructed sensor demonstrated effective detection of Cd 2+ in the concentration range of 10 –4 –10 µM, with a remarkably low detection limit of 2.27 × 10 –5  µM. The feasibility of the sensor was validated by successfully detecting Cd 2+ in real water samples. .

An immunosensor using functionalized Cu2O/Pt NPs as the signal probe for rapid and highly sensitive CEA detection with colorimetry and electrochemistry dual modes

Xiao Wang,Xiaochen Liao,Lisha Mei,Mengmeng Zhang,Siyu Chen,Xiuwen Qiao,Chenglin Hong

Compared with single response systems, dual-mode sensors have attracted much attention due to their high accuracy and high sensitivity. In this work, we successfully combined the high sensitivity of the electrochemical analysis method with the simplicity and rapidity of colorimetric analysis technology to construct a device that can accurately and quickly detect CEA in dual mode. The device in platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) loaded on an octahedral cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) surface has excellent peroxidase performance. Using Cu 2 O/Pt NPs as a signal tag can not only generate a larger response current in electrochemical mode but also effectively catalyze 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl benzidine (TMB) color development in colorimetric mode. The results show that the dual mode sensor has good detection performance. Using the electrochemical analysis method, the detection range was 0.1 pg/mL - 80 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.03 pg/mL. The detection range of colorimetric analysis technology was 0.1 ng/mL - 80 ng/mL, and the detection limit was 0.026 ng/mL. Therefore, the dual-mode sensor has excellent detection performance, good selectivity, reproducibility and stability and provides a new detection method for early cancer detection and prognosis monitoring.

Cubic Cu2O/Cu2S Particles with a Unique Truncated Edge Structure Anchoring on Reduced Graphene Oxide as An Enhanced Anode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Ke Wang,Ying Huang,Yade Zhu,Meng Yu,Mingyue Wang

Graphical Cubic composites : Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S-rGO composites are synthesized by using a facile growth process. Benefiting from the rGO coating and the “breathable” structure formed by Cu 2 O and Cu 2 S, the resulting material delivers an initial discharge capacity of 878.6 mAh g 1 , stable cycling stability of 417.35 mAh g 1 after 100 cycles, retaining 73.5 % of its initial charge capacity, demonstrating a significantly improved cycling reversibility and structural stability. Cubic Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S particles with a novel truncated edge structure anchoring on reduced graphene oxide (Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S-rGO composites) were synthesized by using a facile growth process. Compared to simple Cu 2 O cubes and bare Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S particles, the Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S-rGO composite shows a competitive capacity and stable cyclic stability as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). At a low current density of 60 mA g −1 , the Cu 2 O/Cu 2 S-rGO composite delivers an initial discharge capacity of 878.6 mAh g −1 , stable cycling stability of 417.35 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, retaining 73.5 % of its initial charge capacity, demonstrating a significantly improved cycling reversibility and structural stability. The enhanced electrochemical performance for Cu 2 O/Cu x S-rGO composites might be ascribed to the rGO coating and the “breathable” structure formed by Cu 2 O and Cu 2 S. The outer coated rGO nanosheets could maintain the structural integrity and electrical conductivity, and the main active component (Cu 2 O and Cu 2 S) is present in the form of small clusters, providing “breathable” aggregates capable of effective sequential shrinkage and expansion.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Engineered Cu/Cu2O/CuO@C nanocomposites from Copper–Furan 2, 5-Dicarboxylic acid Metal-Organic Framework: Unlocking catalytic Mastery in nitroarene hydrogenation

Haoheng Wu,Yanyan Yu,Ying He,Yun Liu

The development of high-performance, multifunctional catalysts capable of effectively addressing nitroarene hydrogenation remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a novel approach to catalyst design through the controlled carbonization of a copper–furan dicarboxylate metal–organic framework (Cu-FDCA MOF), resulting in two distinct nanocomposites: oxygen-vacancy-rich Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C (synthesized in an argon atmosphere) and conventional CuO (prepared by air calcination). Advanced characterizations, including TEM, XPS, EPR, and BET, reveal that Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C possesses 2.3 times more oxygen vacancies and a surface area 97 times greater (106.21 m 2 /g vs. 1.09 m 2 /g) than CuO, which directly correlates with its superior catalytic performance. In the context of nitroarene hydrogenation, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C demonstrates an exceptionally high rate constant (k app  = 25.33 × 10 -2 s -1 ), outperforming CuO by a factor of 40. Furthermore, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C maintains 90 % of its catalytic activity after five reaction cycles and can be fully regenerated upon treatment at 400 °C. Through a combination of experimental studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we propose a novel water-derived hydrogen transfer mechanism that challenges conventional understanding of the role of NaBH 4 . Notably, Cu/Cu 2 O/CuO@C also exhibits impressive versatility, efficiently degrading organic dye (Congo red/methylene blue/methyl blue) within three minutes. This work establishes MOF-derived oxygen-deficient nanocomposites as promising platforms for both amine synthesis and environmental decontamination.

Facile Fabrication of Room-Temperature Parts-per-Billion-Level Acetone Sensor Driven by In Situ Laser-Induced Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich Cu/Cu2O/CuO Composites

Yaming Hu,Wenshuo Xie,Zhizhi Wang,Jinlong Ma,Linlin Hou,Qi Wang,Feng Xiong,Guanglan Liao,Tielin Shi,Hu Long

The introduction of oxygen vacancies (OVs) into metal oxide micro/nanostructures significantly enhances both catalytic performance and electrical conductivity, thereby boosting their gas-sensing capabilities. However, conventional approaches for engineering oxygen vacancies typically require specialized equipment (e.g., autoclave reactors) and extreme operational conditions (e.g., high temperature and high vacuum), posing substantial challenges for practical applications. Herein, a novel single-step laser-induced technique is developed for fabricating CuOx-based room-temperature acetone sensors under ambient conditions. The technique enables mask-free fabrication of tunable sensing films spanning morphologies from porous networks to nanospheres by precisely modulating the film thickness. Furthermore, oxygen-vacancy self-doping is inherently coupled with the micro/nanostructure growth mechanism, bypassing conventional postsynthesis treatments while preserving process simplicity. The as-prepared CuOx gas sensors with distinct morphologies manifest exceptional room-temperature acetone sensing with a wide response range spanning 0.1–10 ppm. Comparative analysis of nanosphere-based gas sensors conclusively demonstrates that oxygen vacancies constitute a key structural determinant, enabling room-temperature sensing capability in CuOx-based sensors. Moreover, both gas sensors exhibit outstanding selectivity toward acetone against common interferents (NO2, H2, CO2, and CO) and a low detection limit, highlighting their potential for trace acetone gas detection applications.

In-situ growth of Cu2O microstructures on copper Mesh: A robust multifunctional membrane for oil spill Cleanup and photo-Fenton-like degradation of organic dyes

Shiyu Wang,Fazli Wahid,Xing'er Jijue,Xuezhi Dai,Qiang Tian

Sustainable oil-water separation is essential for global industries, particularly in the treatment of industrial wastewater and remediation of marine oil spills. Membrane-based separation has emerged as a key technology in this context. However, conventional superhydrophobic membranes often fail to remove dissolved organic pollutants from complex oily wastewater, which limits their reliability in large-scale applications. To address this, we developed a multifunctional membrane by in-situ growth of Cu 2 O microstructures on a copper mesh substrate via a hydrothermal redox reaction, followed by functionalization with stearic acid to impart superhydrophobicity. The resulting membrane demonstrated excellent oil-water separation performance, with a high flux of ∼22,812 Lm −2 h −1 and an efficiency of 99.85%. It also exhibited notable self-cleaning capability, stability under harsh environments, and recyclability. Furthermore, the membrane showed prominent photo-Fenton-like catalytic activity, achieving a 97.3% removal rate of organic dyes within 18 min. The degradation process was systematically optimized by varying the catalyst dosage, initial pH of the solution, dye concentration, and H 2 O 2 content. This work presents a significant advancement in multifunctional membrane technology by integrating efficient oil-water separation with advanced oxidation processes for the remediation of complex wastewater.

Fast in situ construction of a Cu2O/Cu-MOF S-scheme heterojunction with synergetic interface matching and carrier separation ability for efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation

Yanning Qu,Wanquan Ma,Shihu Lei,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Huayun Du,Madi Ren

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based heterojunctions, as one of porous materials, offer abundant unsaturated coordination sites, making them suitable for photocatalytic N 2 reduction. However, complicated reaction methods, mismatched interfaces and ineffective photo-induced carrier separation restricted their applications. In this study, a kind of Cu 2 O/Cu-MOF heterojunction was synthesized via a fast in situ method in acidic medium (CCM-a). It showed a typical core-shell structure with Cu-MOF coating surrounding the Cu 2 O. The photocatalytic NH 3 yield of CCM-a reached 83.25 μmol/g/h, which was 9.03 and 19.64 higher than that of pure Cu 2 O and CCM-b, respectively. The reaction pathway of N 2 reduction was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and in-situ FT-IR spectra, revealing a preference for the alternating association pathway. The photocatalytic mechanisms were analyzed through the built-in electric field (IEF) theory, supporting its S-scheme charge-transfer route of CCM-a. The novel material achieved from in situ strategy not only ensured a good interface matching ability but also facilitated sufficient separation of photo-generated carriers via a S-scheme route for efficient photocatalytic N 2 fixation.

Preparation of N-acetyl-para-aminophenol via a flow route of a clean amination and acylation of p-nitrophenol catalyzing by core-shell Cu2O@CeO2

Yue Li,Yuxuan Ma,Yuanyuan Zhang,Xiaojing Wang,Fenghua Bai

The selectivity and reactivity to converse series nitroaromatic into aminobenzenes are especially significant, which play a vital role in synthesizing required drugs or other fine chemicals. Herein, p-nitrophenol (p-NP) has been completely conversed into p-anomiphenol (p-AP) with a high activity factor k (0.033 s −1 ·mg −1 ) and reusability by core-shell Cu 2 O@CeO 2 catalyst. N-acetyl-para-aminophenol (paracetamal, APAP) as a model drug was further synthesized via a flow route proceeded in two steps including p-NP reduction and subsequently p-AP acylation with self-constructing device. The yield of the paracetamal is up to 85% with a highly purity. The mechanism investigation justifies the rich-electron centers and cation defects generated from the redox coupled Cu + →Cu 0 with Ce 3+ →Ce 4+ will steer selective conversion of p-NP to p-AP, a rate-determining step in the production of APAP. The present results could visualize a highly selective catalyst and a new synthesis route for pharmaceuticals such as paracetamal by using nitroaromatic compounds as the raw materials with environment-friendly, low-cost, easy-manipulation, high-efficiency and high purity.

Fabrication of Ag–Cu2O/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites as Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates for in Situ Monitoring of Peroxidase-Like Catalytic Reaction and Biosensing

Yue Guo,Hai Wang,Xiaowei Ma,Jing Jin,Wei Ji,Xu Wang,Wei Song,Bing Zhao,Chengyan He

Highly sensitive biosensors are essential in medical diagnostics, especially for monitoring the state of an individual’s disease. An ideal way to achieve this objective is to analyze human sweat secretions by noninvasive monitoring. Due to low concentrations of target analytes in human secretions, fabrication of ultrasensitive detection devices is a great challenge. In this work, Ag–Cu2O/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were prepared by a facile two-step in situ reduction procedure at room temperature. Ag–Cu2O/rGO nanocomposites possess intrinsic peroxidase-like activity and rapidly catalyze oxidation of the peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2. On the basis of the excellent SERS properties and high peroxidase-like activity of the Ag–Cu2O/rGO nanocomposites, the catalytic oxidation of TMB can be monitored by SERS. This approach can detect H2O2 and glucose with high sensitivity and distinguish between diabetic and normal individuals using glucose levels in fingerprints. Our work provides direction for designing other SERS substrates with high catalytic activity and the potential for application in biosensing, forensic investigation, and medical diagnostics.
