The widespread use of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) has dramatically increased their concentrations in soils and severely affected the health of soil organisms. The gut microbiota critically contributes to the metabolism and immune system of its host and is sensitive to environmental pollution . The toxic effect of CuONPs on the gut microbiota, especially in soil fauna , still needs further research. In the present study, a comprehensive toxicological test was performed to reveal the effects of CuONPs and their metal counterpart on the gut microbiota of soil collembolans using Illumina high throughput sequencing. Furthermore, the concomitant changes in the collembolans gut-associated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metabolism were investigated using high-throughput quantitative PCR and carbon and nitrogen stable isotope compositions. Both CuONPs and ionic copper (Cu) exposure disturbed the collembolan gut microbial community structure while only CuONPs reduced the gut microbial diversity. A total of 66 ARGs were detected in the collembolan guts, and CuONPs exposure induced a reduction in both diversity and abundance of ARGs. Additionally, CuONPs and ionic Cu exposure altered the C and N stable isotope compositions of the collembolans, indicating a change in their metabolism. Moreover, structural equation modeling indicated that 85.5% of the carbon stable isotope variations and 73.3% of the nitrogen stable isotope variations were explained by changes in Cu bioaccumulation and the gut microbiota. The results of the present study extend our knowledge regarding the comprehensive toxicity of metal oxide NPs on soil fauna.

Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) show differences in antimicrobial activity due to different chemical and physical properties. Using copper as a representative example, this study compared the NP effects on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria in wastewater treatment. Long-term exposure to 5 mgCu L −1 CuNPs reduced the physiological activity and abundance of anammox bacteria, thereby causing deterioration of reactor performance. However, anammox granules exhibited stronger resistance and resilience to perturbation by 1–160 mgCu L −1 CuONPs, and no adverse effects on performance were observed. Moreover, the level of Cu(II) released from NPs in the influent exhibited good correlations with variations of the community structure and sludge properties. Therefore, the effects of Cu-based NPs on anammox sludge properties are dependent on their forms and levels, and their discrepant effects are partially attributed to their ability to release ionic copper.

Polyetheretherketone has been widely used for bone defect repair, whereas failures may happen due to implant loosening and infection. Thus, PEEK implant with multi-function (osteogenesis, angiogenesis , and bacteria-killing) is essential to solve this problem. Herein, copper oxide microspheres (µCuO) decorated with silver nanoparticles (nAg) were constructed on porous PEEK surface via silk fibroin . In vitro studies highlighted the pH controlled release ability of this coating. It liberated a high dose of Cu 2+ and Ag + at low pH environment (pH 5.0), leading to 99.99% killing of planktonic bacteria and complete eradication of sessile bacteria, avoiding biofilm formation. Under physiological environment (pH 7.4), a lower amount of leaked metal ions induced promoted ALP production, collagen secretion, and calcium deposition, as well as NO production, which indicated potentiated osteogenesis and angiogenesis. In vivo results displayed the highest new bone volume around, and the appearance of new bone inside porous structure of, PEEK implant with this coating in rabbit tibia, signified the abilities of this coating to promote bone regeneration and osseointegration . Our study established solid support for implants with this coating to be a successful bone defect repair solution. Statement of Significance In this study, CuO/Ag micro/nano particles were incorporated into the porous surface of PEEK through polydopamine and silk fibroin layers. The design of this coating conferred pH-controlled release behavior to Cu 2+ and Ag + . High dose of metal ions were released at pH 5.0, which presented synergistic antibacterial ability and killed 99.99% of planktonic bacteria. Low concentration of metal ions were controlled by this coating at physiological environment, which potentiated osteodifferentiation of Ad-MSC in vitro and led to complete integration of implant with bone tissue in vivo .

Pt@CeO 2 /MCM-56 (PCM) and CeO 2 -CuO (9:1)/MCM-56 (CCM) were combined to purify the exhaust emissions from diesel vehicles in three configuration statuses, defined as configuration A—where CCM stays above PCM, configuration B—where PCM stays above CCM, and configuration C—where CCM mixes with PCM homogeneously in loose contact. Among these combined catalysts, the configuration A is most favorable for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction, with >80% NO x conversion obtained at the temperature range of 150–550 °C and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 240,000 ml g −1 h −1 . NH 3 -TPD, H 2- TPR and NH 3 conversion measurements demonstrated that NH 3 can be selectively used to reduce NO x in the configuration A but is over-oxidized if the reaction is operated in configuration B or configuration C status, deteriorating the deNO x activity at temperature above 250 °C. Hence, configuration A not only takes advantage but also overcomes the shortcomings of PCM and CCM, leading to high NO x conversion and N 2 selectivity. A significant decrease in the onset temperature of soot combustion was also observed in this research.

As ammonia (NH 3 ) emerges as a pivotal renewable hydrogen carrier, the development of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) is imperative for sustainable hydrogen production. However, non-noble-metal catalysts are frequently bottlenecked by sluggish kinetics, restricted active-site exposure, and severe intermediate poisoning. Herein, a hierarchical Cr 2 O 3 @CuO heterostructure was synthesized on nickel foam via a two-step hydrothermal method. The optimized nanocatalyst delivers a remarkable AOR activity, achieving 10 mA cm −2 at a low potential of 1.32 V vs. RHE, alongside exceptional durability for 36 h at a high current density of 150 mA cm −2 . Experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies reveal that Cr incorporation enriches oxygen vacancies and downshifts the d-band center from −1.12 eV to −1.79 eV. Notably, the dynamic evolution of high-valent Cr 6+ species during AOR effectively attenuates intermediate adsorption, lowering the maximum dehydrogenation free-energy barrier from 2.06 to 0.96 eV. This study underscores the significance of dynamic valence regulation in enhancing AOR kinetics and provides a robust paradigm for the rational design of transition-metal-based catalysts for the ammonia-to-hydrogen economy.

Phytopathogenic fungi pose a critical threat to global food security through substantial pre- and post-harvest crop losses, intensified by climate change and fungicide resistance. To address this, we synthesized low-concentration chitosan–inorganic oxide nanocomposites (CS-SiO2, CS-ZnO, CS-CuO) via ionic gelation, a green and scalable method. Comprehensive characterization (DLS, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM) confirmed nanocomposite formation, CS-SiO2exhibited uniform particle sizes (200–250 nm), while CS-CuO showed slightly larger particles, all with excellent dispersity. Zeta potential analysis confirmed strong colloidal stability, with pure chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) displaying a surface charge of +12.9 mV, while all nanocomposites retained positive charges, enhancing adhesion to negatively charged fungal membranes. In vitro antifungal assays againstAlternaria alternata,Botrytis cinerea,Colletotrichum graminicola, andFusarium graminearumdemonstrated hierarchical efficacy: CS-CuO > CS-ZnO > CS-SiO2, with CS-CuO achieving >80% growth inhibition against B. cinerea and A. alternata. SEM revealed severe hyphal damage and spore collapse in CS-CuO-treated fungi, attributed to synergistic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and chitosan-mediated membrane disruption. In vivo trials on B. cinerea-infected apples showed CS-CuO reduced lesion area by 81% and elevated host defense markers, including a 1.5-fold increase in total phenolic content and higher DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to controls. These nanocomposites, particularly CS-CuO, offer a sustainable, dual-action solution direct antifungal activity and enhanced host resilience while minimizing environmental impact. By integrating scalable synthesis, eco-compatibility, and efficacy, this work advances chitosan–inorganic oxide nanocomposites as viable alternatives to conventional fungicides, with immediate potential for agricultural and postharvest applications.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor was proposed for neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) detection using copper oxide/ zinc imidazole framework 8@ carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (CuO/ZIF-8@CNTs GCE). The multi-component CuO/ZIF-8@CNTs GCE was prepared by two-step drop-casting method and characterized by Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The effective combination of CuO and ZIF-8@CNTs enhanced the electron transfer and catalytic activity of the electrode and greatly strengthened the oxidation current of NHDC, which was about 5.6-fold that of the CuO GCE and 2.3-fold that of the ZIF-8@CNTs GCE. Inspired by this, the CuO/ZIF-8@CNTs GCE was used for NHDC detection and some crucial parameters were optimized. The reaction mechanism at CuO/ZIF-8@CNTs GCE was confirmed to involve two-step two-electron process by cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Finally, the sensor achieved NHDC detection ranging from 0.03 to 10 μM using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique, with a detection limit of 16.0 nM. The satisfactory recoveries of 92.9–107.8 % in liquor samples also demonstrated its practicability in actual samples, matching well with that of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This work not only designs a simple detection method for NHDC but also opens up a paradigm for leveraging multi-component MOF composite electrode materials for food safety monitoring.

In this study, a high-performance self-powered ultraviolet photodetector (UV PD) is demonstrated, which is fabricated through straightforward hydrothermal and electrochemical deposition techniques. The device features a p–n heterojunction structure composed of ZnO nanorods (NRs) as the n -type bottom layer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxyselenophene) (PEDOS) as the p -type top layer, and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) incorporated as a key intermediate layer. Under weak UV irradiation (365 nm, 0.32 mW/cm 2 ), the fabricated UV PD delivers outstanding self-powered performance, attaining a responsivity of 0.185 μA/W and a detectivity of 3.58 × 10⁹ Jones. The CuO NPs insertion layer is verified as the key contributor to device performance enhancement: the UV PD with the CuO NPs interlayer exhibits a responsivity higher than that of the device without the interlayer. This performance boost is attributed to the CuO NPs’ ability to optimize heterojunction quality-specifically; it facilitates carrier generation, transport, and separation while extending carrier lifetime, thus substantially enhancing the responsivity of the CuO NPs/ZnO/PEDOS self-powered UV PD. Additionally, the fabricated self-powered UV PD exhibits excellent multi-cycle stability and robust detection performance under different light intensities. With its high efficiency and low-cost fabrication process, this self-powered UV PD exhibits great potential for practical applications in UV sensing systems.

MOF-derived CuO/Co 3 O 4 heterojunctions were constructed for efficient PMS activation. • The interfacial built-in electric field induces directional electron transfer from Co to Cu. • High-valent metal species and non-radical pathways dominate BPA degradation. • Enhanced PMS adsorption promotes O − O bond cleavage and a non-radical pathway. Efficient removal of phenolic endocrine disruptors, such as bisphenol A (BPA), remains a significant challenge in complex aquatic environments. In this study, a CuO/Co heterojunction catalyst (CuCo-NC X ) was developed by anchoring Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles onto MOF derived CuO/carbon composites for the high-performance activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The CuCo-NC/PMS system exhibited superior catalytic activity, achieving a 97.8% removal of BPA within 40 min, with a corresponding apparent rate constant of 0.1111 min −1 . Furthermore, it demonstrated exceptional anti-interference capability and selectivity in complex aqueous matrices containing various co-existing anions and natural organic matter. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and systematic characterization revealed that a built-in electric field (BIEF) formed at the CuO/Co 3 O 4 interface strongly drives directional electron transfer from Co sites to Cu sites. During the catalytic process, the electron-rich Cu acts as an electron reservoir, significantly promoting the Co redox cycle through an electron feedback effect, which induces the generation of high-valent metal species (HVMs) and optimizes the PMS activation pathway. This study not only develops a high-performance catalytic platform for eliminating endocrine disruptors but also provides new insights into modulating heterogeneous catalytic pathways via interfacial BIEF. A binder-free VSe-CuO@NiCo-Se electrode with selenium-rich vacancy (VSe) and hierarchical nanoarrays is constructed. • The interconnected hierarchical nanoarray structure effectively alleviate volume expansion and facilitate rapid electron/ion transport. • Se vacancies significantly enhances the electrical conductivity and creates abundant redox active sites of electrode material. • The series connection of two VSe-CuO@NiCo-Se//AC devices successfully addresses high-voltage application requirements. Sluggish kinetics and poor cycling stability of battery-type electrode materials are two major bottlenecks that limit the large-scale application of supercapacitors (SCs) in energy storage systems. To address these challenges, we designed and constructed a binder-free V Se -CuO@NiCo-Se electrode with hierarchical selenium-vacancy (V Se ) nanoarrays directly grown on a highly conductive copper foam (CF) substrate. Systematic characterizations combined with theoretical calculations reveal that the three-dimensional porous CF structure serves dual functions as both a current collector and a Cu source, which not only alleviates the agglomeration of electrode materials and but also eliminates the degradation of electrochemical performance caused by insulating binders and additives. Moreover, the interconnected hierarchical nanoarray structure effectively alleviate volume expansion during charge-discharge processes while facilitating rapid electron/ion transport. Most notably, the introduction of Se vacancies significantly enhances the electrical conductivity and creates abundant redox active sites of electrode material. As anticipated, the V Se -CuO@NiCo-Se electrode displays elevated specific capacity of 441.6 mAh g –1 (2890.9 F g –1 ) at 3 A g –1 , excellent rate capability (94.8% capacity retention at 20 A g –1 ), and long cycling stability (82% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles). Furthermore, the V Se -CuO@NiCo-Se//AC quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor device achieves an energy density of 38.4 Wh kg –1 at 800 W kg –1 . Importantly, the series connection of dual devices successfully addresses high-voltage application requirements. The strategic integration of Se vacancies, hierarchical nanoarrays, and a binder-free structure is a highly effective approach for developing high-performance electrodes, thereby advancing the practical application of SCs in energy storage. The hierarchical CuO@NiCo-Se nanoarray electrode material with Se vacancies (V Se -CuO@NiCo-Se) shows high specific capacity, excellent rate performance, and substantial durability. In addition, a quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) constructed with V Se -CuO@NiCo-Se functioning as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) serving as the negative electrode manifests outstanding cyclability (75.3% capacity retention after 5000 cycles). Simultaneous nitrogen monoxide (NO) reduction and elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) oxidation in the presence of ammonia (NH 3 ) was for the first time studied on a copper oxide/titanium dioxide (CuO/TiO 2 ) catalyst at low flue gas temperatures. More than 80% NO reduction and 90% Hg 0 oxidation were concurrently achieved on the CuO/TiO 2 catalyst at 250 °C under a simulated NH 3 selective catalytic reduction (SCR) atmosphere. NO was likely oxidized on the CuO/TiO 2 catalyst to form active nitrogenous species, particularly with the aid of oxygen. The active nitrogenous species then significantly promoted Hg 0 oxidation. NH 3 itself did not affect Hg 0 conversion on the CuO/TiO 2 catalyst. The co-occurrences of NO and NH 3 led to a reduction in oxidized mercury (HgO in this work), which partially offset the Hg 0 oxidation and therefore resulted in a relatively lower Hg 0 conversion efficiency. However, compared to flue gas without NO and NH 3 , the combined presence of NO and NH 3 still enhanced Hg 0 oxidation over the CuO/TiO 2 catalyst, primarily because of the overwhelming benefit from NO. This is superior to many other SCR catalysts, including commercial vanadia-based SCR catalysts, on which an SCR atmosphere generally inhibits Hg 0 conversion.

The excellent photocatalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with NaBH 4 in the aqueous medium is still a big challenge. Herein, we report a facile one-pot evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method to synthesize a series of CuO/TiO 2 nanocomposites. The as-synthesized CuO/TiO 2 photocatalysts exhibit remarkable catalytic activity under direct sunlight in selective hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) due to the synergistic interaction of guest copper nanoparticles with host titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) species. Especially, 5 wt% CuO/TiO 2 nanocomposite revealed superior reaction rate constant (k) value (0.306 min −1 ) when compared to 3 wt% CuO/TiO 2 (0.192 min −1 ) and 7 wt% CuO/TiO 2 (0.240 min −1 ). Moreover, several characterization techniques (XRD, TEM, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherm, DRS, and XPS) were executed to deeply investigate the effect of copper content on the bulk and interfacial properties of the catalysts. The characterization results proved that the superior photocatalytic hydrogenation over 5 wt% CuO/TiO 2 catalyst can be ascribed to moderate CuO loading as well as even dispersion of CuO species on the surface of active TiO 2 host, which can largely improve the light absorption ability within visible light region. Besides, the 5 wt% CuO/TiO 2 catalyst exhibits remarkable recyclability and durability, retaining its superior activity (above 95%) up to several repeating cycles, proving its practical applicability for hydrogenation reactions at domestic and industrial levels.
