Mechanochemical (MC) destruction of pollutants is effective; however, the emerging electron transfer mechanism is ambiguous owing to a lack of systematic evaluation. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the contribution of electrons to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) defluorination during MC process. A synergistic effect was obtained by activating BaTiO 3 to generate piezoelectrons and applying zero-valence aluminum (ZVAl) to facilitate electron transfer, with 95.66% PFOA defluorination and reaction time decreasing from 6 h to 3 h. The mechanism of piezoelectric catalysis of the BaTiO 3 /ZVAl system was further investigated through kinetic analyses and intersystem comparisons. The major contribution of piezo-excited electrons was revealed through probe detection and quantitative determination. A positive correlation between electron generation and PFOA defluorination was ascertained, and the calculation of the electron utilization ratio revealed an electron transfer mechanism. The detached fluorides were confirmed to be bonded directly to the additives. Furthermore, PFOA decomposition was identified as a cyclical process with constant dissociation of the CF 2 groups.

A metal–phenolic network coating was constructed on PMP hollow fiber membranes. • The Engineered interface forms a stable hydration layer that resits protein adsorption and platelet adhesion. • The Coating synergistically suppressed the thrombosis-inflammation cascade. • The modified membrane exhibited potent reactive oxygen species scavenging activity. • Stable CO 2 removal was maintained during prolonged blood circulation. Polymer hollow fiber membranes used in blood-contacting gas exchange applications often suffer from insufficient hemocompatibility due to their intrinsically hydrophobic and biologically inert surfaces, which can induce nonspecific biofouling, thrombosis, and inflammatory responses during long-term operation. Herein, we present a facile bioinspired metal–phenolic interfacial engineering strategy to construct a stable, multifunctional coating on poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) hollow fiber membranes through one-step coordination between tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ ions. The resulting TA–Fe 3+ metal–phenolic network forms a highly hydrated and mechanically stable surface layer, providing effective resistance against nonspecific adsorption and maintaining interfacial integrity under dynamic flow conditions. The engineered interface significantly enhanced hemocompatibility by suppressing protein adsorption (reduced from 53.8 μg/cm 2 to 10.4 μg/cm 2 ), minimizing blood cell adhesion, prolonging activated partial thromboplastin time, and decreasing thrombus formation by approximately 75%. Meanwhile, the phenolic groups within the metal–phenolic network provide efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging capability, thereby attenuating macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses and reducing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Dynamic circulation tests confirmed the excellent interfacial stability of the coating under continuous blood flow without compromising the intrinsic gas transport characteristics or CO 2 removal performance of the membranes. This work establishes a robust metal–phenolic interfacial engineering strategy for multifunctional modification of polymer hollow fiber membranes, offering new opportunities for developing durable blood-contacting membranes for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO 2 R) and other membrane-based extracorporeal circulation systems. In this study, Leuconostoc citreum BH10, an endophytic strain, was isolated from aseptically collected xylem sap of birch for the first time, and its exopolysaccharide (LCEPS) production was up to 46.31 g/L in glucan producing medium. The produced LCEPS was purified to obtain two water-soluble fractions, named as LCEPS-1 and LCEPS-2, respectively. The major fraction LCEPS-1 was characterized to be comprised of glucose with average molecular weight of 6.34 × 10 6 Da. The structure of LCEPS-1 was investigated by spectroscopy analysis, which revealed that LCEPS-1 was identified with containing 90.45 % α-(1,6) linkages in the main chains and 9.55 % α-(1,3) branch linkages. The scanning electron microscope results demonstrated that the dried LCEPS-1 appeared porous surface overlaid with an irregular glittering. The water solubility index (WSI) and water holding capacity (WHC) of LCEPS-1 were 88.02 ± 1.69 % and 241.43 ± 6.38 %, respectively. Besides, it exhibited high thermal stability as well as fine antioxidant activities . Taken together, the results indicated that LCEPS-1 could have good potentiality to be applied in fields of foods, cosmetics, nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical industries as the natural agent.

The flower ofSyringa pubescensTurcz. is used in Chinese folk medicine and also as a flower tea for healthcare. The effects of five drying methods on the active compound contents, the antioxidant abilities, anti-inflammatory properties and enzyme inhibitory activities were evaluated. The plant materials were treated using shade-drying, microwave-drying, sun-drying, infrared-drying and oven-drying. The seven active compounds were simultaneously determined using an HPLC method. Furthermore, the chemical profile was assessed using scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy. The antioxidant capacities and protective effects on L02 cells induced with hydrogen peroxide were measured. The anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 cells were investigated. The enzyme inhibitory activities were determined against α-amylase, α-glucosidase cholinesterases and tyrosinase. The results indicated that drying methods had significant influences on the active compound contents and biological properties. Compared with other samples, the OD samples possessed low IC50values with 0.118 ± 0.004 mg/mL for DPPH radical, 1.538 ± 0.0972 for hydroxyl radical and 0.886 ± 0.199 mg/mL for superoxide radical, while the SHD samples had stronger reducing power compared with other samples. The SHD samples could be effective against H2O2-induced injury on L02 cells by the promoting of T-AOC, GSH-PX, SOD and CAT activities and the reducing of MDA content compared with other samples. Furthermore, SPF samples, especially the SHD sample, could evidently ameliorate inflammation through the inhibition of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α expression. All the studied SPF samples exhibited evidently inhibitory effects on the four enzymes. The IC50values of inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase and α-amylase from SHD sample were 2.516 ± 0.024 and 0.734 ± 0.034 mg/mL, respectively. SD samples had potential inhibitory effects on cholinesterases and tyrosinase with IC50values of 3.443 ± 0.060 and 1.732 ± 0.058 mg/mL. In consideration of active compound contents and biological activities, it was recommended that SHD and SD be applied for drying SPF at an industrial scale. Keywords:Syringa pubescensTurcz.;drying method;bioactive component;biological activity

It is widely recognized that platinum-based chemotherapy, particularly cisplatin therapy, can cause ototoxicity. At present, there are no Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs to prevent or alleviate ototoxicity. Ototoxicity is generally believed to be caused by excessive reactive oxygen species production in the inner ear. Accordingly, a variety of antioxidants have been developed to protect against ototoxicity. To improve the efficiency of drug delivery to the cochlea, here, we synthesized simple and easy-to-obtain glutathione carbon dots (GSH CDs) with ultra-small dimensions. The experimental results revealed that the GSH CDs have strong free-radical scavenging activity and can restore mitochondrial function, maintain hair cell stability, and protect hair cells from cisplatin-induced oxidative stress. Thus, GSH CDs may serve as a new therapeutic agent for preventing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

Osteoarthritis is a worldwide prevalent disease that imposes a significant socioeconomic burden on individuals and healthcare systems. Achieving cartilage regeneration in patients with osteoarthritis remains challenging clinically. In this work, we construct a multiple hydrogen-bond crosslinked hydrogel loaded with tannic acid and Kartogenin by polyaddition reaction as a cell-free scaffold for in vivo cartilage regeneration, which features ultra-durable mechanical properties and stage-dependent drug release behavior. We demonstrate that the hydrogel can withstand 28000 loading-unloading mechanical cycles and exhibits fast shape memory at body temperature (30 s) with the potential for minimally invasive surgery. We find that the hydrogel can also alleviate the inflammatory reaction and regulate oxidative stress in situ to establish a microenvironment conducive to healing. We show that the sequential release of tannic acid and Kartogenin can promote the migration of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into the hydrogel scaffold, followed by the induction of chondrocyte differentiation, thus leading to full-thickness cartilage regeneration in vivo. This work may provide a promising solution to address the problem of cartilage regeneration.

Robinia pseudoacacia flower is a natural product with many biological activities, including antioxidation. To further develop its antioxidation, the extract was fermented by Aspergillus niger FFCC 3112 in the medium with carbon to nitrogen ratio of 1.4:1 and initial pH of 4.2 for 3.5 days to form the best antioxidant activity of the fermentation product by strain screening, single factor optimization, and response surface methodology. Further analysis, isolation and activity determination showed that a main chemical component, kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-galactopyranosyl-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, in the extract was completely hydrolyzed to kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol with better antioxidant activity through biotransformation, which was the basis for improving the antioxidant activity of fermentation products. Moreover, the mechanism of antioxidant and the contribution of phenolic hydroxyl groups were investigated by density functional theory. The result indicated that the antioxidant capacity of kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol increased with the increase of solvent polarity. In high-polarity solvents, they mainly scavenge free radicals through single electron transfer followed by proton transfer.

Meat is prone to microbial contamination during storage, resulting in a shortened shelf life. To address this issue, absorbent preservation mats have been suggested and proven effective in slowing down the spoilage of meat. To this end, this study developed a novel bioactive sponge mat composed of oxidized bacterial cellulose (OBC) and microcapsules loaded with cinnamon essential oil (CGCM) obtained by complex coacervation of chitosan and gum Arabic . The surface charge of such microcapsules was regulated through the use of chitosan obtained from different deacetylation degrees. The physicochemical properties, antioxidant properties, and antibacterial properties of the OBC-CGCM sponge mats were investigated and their effect on meat preservation was assessed. The results concurred that the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between the CGCM and OBC sponge mat matrix led to improved thermal stability, water absorption, and tensile strength of the sponge mat. Furthermore, it demonstrated high antioxidant (reaching up to 90%) and antibacterial properties, particularly in the gas phase (up to 65%). The application of the prepared sponge mat to the preservation of meat was able to maintain the freshness and extend the shelf life of meat from 4 days to around 10 days under 4 °C, which is significantly better than that shown by commercially available preservation mats. In conclusion, the OBC-CGCM sponge mats are highly promising for meat preservation, thereby offering an attractive universal approach to constructing active biomass packaging materials .

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by a lipid accumulated plaque. Anti-oxidative and anti-inflammation as well as lipid metabolism promoting therapeutic strategies have been applied for atherosclerosis treatment. However, the therapeutic effect by a single therapeutic method is limited. Combination of the two strategies could for one thing prevent lipid accumulation cause by inflammation and oxidative stress, for another thing promote lipid efflux from atherosclerotic plaque, to normalize arteries maximumly. Hence, a multifunctional liposome co-encapsulating an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drug epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) as well as a lipid-efflux promoting gene miR-223 was established. The system (lip@EGCG/miR-223) could encapsulate miR-223 in core areas of the liposomes to provide an effective protective effect for gene drugs. Moreover, lip@EGCG/miR-223 was smaller in size (91.28±2.28 nm characterized by DLS), making it easier to target to AS lesions which had a smaller vascular endothelial spaces. After internalized into cellular efficiently, lip@EGCG/miR-223 exhibited excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro by eliminating overproduced ROS and decreasing the level of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and MCP-1), which is due to the effect of EGCG. Besides, the lipid-efflux promoting protein ABCA1 was up-regulated when treated with lip@EGCG/miR-223. By the two therapies mentioned, lip@EGCG/miR-223 could effectively inhibit the formation of foam cells, which is a main component of atherosclerotic plaques. In AS model mice, after intravenous (i.v.) administration, lip@EGCG/miR-223 was effectively accumulated in atherosclerotic plaques, and the distribution of drugs in heart and aorta to that in kidney was significantly increased when compared with free drugs (the ratio was 6.27% for free miR-223 treated group, and was increased to 66.10% for lip@EGCG/miR-223 treated group.). By decreasing inflammation level and lipid accumulation, the arterial vessels in AS were normalized with less macrophages and micro-angiogenesis when treated with lip@EGCG/miR-223. Overall, this study demonstrates lip@EGCG/miR-223 can be developed as a potential system for atherosclerosis treatment by a combined treatment of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and lipid-efflux promoting effects, which provides a novel strategy for safe and efficient management of atherosclerosis.

The poor biological, mechanical and water-resistance properties of sodium alginate/guar gum film (SG) limit its application in food preservation. To overcome this disadvantage, we added β-Cyclodextrin/persimmon pectin-stabilized baobab seed oil Pickering emulsion (BOPE) to enhance the mechanical and water resistance properties of SG film, and added green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPS) and Lycium ruthenicum extract (LA) to improve the biological properties of the film. The properties of BOPE was optimized using Box–Behnken design (BBD). Scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared results revealed the change of structure and molecular interaction in the SG film after the addition of AgNPS, LA, and optimized BOPE. The 2.0%BOPE-loaded film containing AgNPS/LA with the enhanced mechanical, barrier, BO retention, and biological properties not only improved the preservation effect on mushroom ( A. bisporus ), but also maintained structural stability. Thus, the 2.0%BOPE-loaded SG/LA/AgNPS film has considerable potential in active packaging applications.

In this study, strains producing feruloyl esterase were screened by Oxford Cup clear zones method and by evaluating the ability to decompose hydroxycinnamoyl esters. The strain was identified by 16S rDNA molecular biology. The contents of dietary fiber, reducing sugar, water-extractable arabinoxylans, phytic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoid, phenolic compounds composition, microstructure and antioxidant activity in bran before and after fermentation were studied. Eight strains producing feruloyl esterase were screened, among which strain P 1 had the strongest ability to decompose hydroxycinnamoyl esters. The strain was identified and named L. fermentum NB02. Compared with unfermented bran, fermented bran exhibited higher contents of soluble dietary fiber, reducing sugar, water-extractable arabinoxylans, total phenolics, total flavonoid, and lower insoluble dietary fiber and phytic acid content. The dense surface structure of bran was destroyed, forming a porous structure. The release of phenolic compounds increased significantly. L. fermentum NB02 fermentation improved the antioxidant capacity of bran.

This study explored the sensory characteristics, metabolites and antioxidant capability of aged Jinhua white tea (AJWT) over different years of aging and revealed the transformation mechanism of these characteristics during the long-term aging process. The flavor wheel of AJWT was constructed, and its unique flavor was dominated by mellowness, smoothness, a fungus fragrance, and a stale flavor. The high content of theabrownine, soluble sugar, flavonoids and 25 aroma components made important contributions to the formation of the unique flavor of the AJWT, and their content significantly increased during the long-term aging process of 5–10 years. This was related to the microbial bioconversion, the oxidative degradation of catechins, the hydrolysis of flavonosides and the decomposition of polysaccharides. Contrary to folk experience, AJWT had weak comprehensive antioxidant capacity, mainly due to its low content of tea polyphenols, catechin components and caffeine, which decreased significantly during the long-term aging of 5–10 years.
