In the presence of thioglycolic acid (TGA) and under the catalysis of Fe 3+ , a simple, rapid, sensitive, selective and effective ratiometric fluorescence sensor platform based on the mixed physically blue nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) as probe signals and orange rhodamine B as internal standard signals has been constructed for analysis of H 2 O 2 in human serum. TGA is the key factor for fluorescence response toward H 2 O 2 by N-GQDs and the mechanism is H 2 O 2 reacts speedily with TGA under the catalysis of Fe 3+ , and produces intermediate of superoxide anions ( O 2 − ), which accepts electrons from N-GQDs, and generates graphene oxide, causing the fluorescence quench of N-GQDs. Compared with N-GQDs probe, the sensitivity of the ratiometric fluorescence sensor platform of N-GQDs/rhodamine B for analysis of H 2 O 2 has been improved by nearly 5-folds. Under the optimum conditions, F λ=580nm / F λ=440nm has a good linear relationship with the concentration of H 2 O 2 and the detection limit of H 2 O 2 is 0.46 μmol/L with 3.5% RSD. The established sensor platform has been successfully used for probing H 2 O 2 in human serum with satisfactory results. The superior performance of the probe lies in its high selectivity and can be directly employed in detecting H 2 O 2 in serum samples without any sample pretreatment procedures.

To fabricate N-CQDs hybrid thermo-sensitive polymer (poly-N-CQDs), N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with strong blue fluorescence and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc)) copolymer with thermo-sensitivity were synthesized, respectively. Subsequently, the coupling reaction between. the -COOH groups of poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc) and the -NH2groups on the surface of the N-CQDs was carried out. The fluorescence spectra show that the coil-globule transition of the poly-N-CQDs coincided with intensity changes in the scattering peak at excitation wavelength with the temperature variations. The phase transition temperature and the fluorescent intensity of poly-N-CQDs can be regulated by modulating the composition and concentration of poly-N-CQDs as well as the temperature and pH of the local medium. The thermo-sensitivity and fluorescent properties of the poly-N-CQDs displayed good stability and reversibility. The fluorescence intensity and emission wavelengths of the poly-N-CQDs significantly changed in different solvents for solvent recognition. The poly-N-CQDs was employed as a fluorescent probe for Fe3+detection ranging from 0.025 to 1 mM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 9.49 μM. The hybrid polymer materials have the potential to develop an N-CQDs-based thermo-sensitive device or sensor.Keywords:N-doped carbon quantum dots;thermo-sensitive polymer;phase transition temperature;solvent recognition;ion detection

Wearable sensors based on hydrogels have been rapidly developed in many fields such as electronic skin, health detection, and human-machine interface. Wearable sensors for real-time monitoring of human activities require hydrogels with desirable mechanical strength , self-healing ability, sensing stability, and self-adhesion. However, to meet all these mentioned requirements, the preparation process of hydrogels is always complicated and time-consuming. Herein, rapid polymerization hydrogels (PATG-B-Fe) for wearable sensors were designed from bacterial cellulose nanowhisker (BCW), tannic acid (TA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), Fe 3+ and glycerol/water (Gly/H 2 O). The dual catalysis system of TA-Fe 3+ and Gly remarkably shortened the reaction time to 4 s at ambient temperature. With multiple hydrogen bonds and coordination among BCW-TA, PAA, and Fe 3+ , hydrogels exhibited an excellent trade-off between mechanical (stress of 203 kPa, elongation at break of 1950%) and self-healing property (91% of efficiency). Strain sensors based on PATG-B-Fe hydrogels had good sensitivity (Gauge factor, maximum GF = 5.2 in 1200–1900% strain) and stable sensing properties at a wide temperature range (−20–60 °C). Furthermore, strain sensors were adhered directly to skin to monitor large and subtle human movements. We believe PATG-B-Fe sensors may be a new horizon for the development of wearable and flexible electronic devices in the future.

Two new polyimide based porous covalent organic frameworks (PI-COF 201 and PI-COF 202) were synthesized in high yields by directly heating mixtures of melamine and pyromellitic dianhydride and naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride in a N2 atmosphere, respectively. Their structures and properties were characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption and scanning electron microscopy and their fluorescence properties were studied in detail. These two COFs emitted strong fluorescence in appropriate solvents that originated from the π* → n transition caused by the high electro-delocalization and inherently rigid structure of the COF materials. The strong quenching effects of Fe3+ on the fluorescence of the COFs allowed selective chemosensing for Fe3+.

It is of great significance to develop carbon quantum dots (CQDs) using green carbon sources, which are cheap, non-toxic and harmless, and further expand their application scopes, e.g., fluorescence sensors, blue light screening. In this study, we have prepared Peperomia tetraphylla-based carbon quantum dots (PT-CQDs) with strong water solubility, good salt resistance, specific quenching reactions and excellent optical properties via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. In one application, PT-CQDs are utilized as a fluorescence sensor due to their high selectivity and sensitivity to ferric ions (Fe3+). The limit of detection (LOD) was 2.7 μmol·L−1. On the other hand, PT-CQDs/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films with excellent ultraviolet- (UV) and high-energy blue light (HEBL)-blocking properties were obtained. The obtained films exhibited a high blue light weight blocking rate of 100% in UV and 80% in HEBL. The concentrations of the composites could also be controlled to achieve the desired light-blocking rate. In addition, the composites were able to absorb blue light and convert it to other forms of light. These properties suggest their potential applications in the development of advanced blue light screening and fluorescence sensors.

A novel rhodamine-based multi-ion fluorescent sensor, RGN, was designed and synthesized for the highly selective detection of mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) in ethanol and water systems, as well as trivalent cations (Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , and Cr 3+ ) in acetonitrile and water systems using a two-step Schiff base reaction method. Nuclear magnetic titration experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the sensor achieved the detection of the aforementioned metal ions through the fluorescence turn-on phenomenon induced by lactam ring-opening. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results showed decreased HOMO-LUMO energy gaps and increased dipole moments, indicating the effective coordination of the sensor with the corresponding metal ions to form more stable complexes, thereby achieving detection objectives. Furthermore, the fluorescence turn-on sensor RGN exhibited relatively low detection limits, with limits of detection (LOD) for Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , and Hg 2+ being 10.20 nM, 14.66 nM, 58.78 nM, and 73.33 nM, respectively. Finally, practical applications of sensor RGN in environmental water samples, L929 cells, and zebrafish were demonstrated, indicating its potential for detecting and tracking Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , and Hg 2+ in environmental samples and biological systems, with prospects for biomedical applications in the diagnosis and treatment of heavy metal ion-induced diseases.

This study investigated the impact of structural changes (particle size, potential, hydrophobicity, circular dichroism spectra) in ovotransferrin with and without Fe 3+ (holo-OVT and apo-OVT) on their interfacial behaviors. Holo-OVT exhibited greater diffusion, penetration, and rearrangement rates at the oil-water interface, whereas apo-OVT was detected at the air-water interface owing to the reduced hydrophobicity of air phase. Reduced hydrophobicity of both the protein (apo-OVT) and the dispersed phase (oil) leads to shorter lag periods. As for the interfacial film, holo-OVT formed denser but thinner films than those formed by apo-OVT at both interfaces, as confirmed by larger viscoelastic modulus, reduced film thickness, and lower Gibbs surface excess. These findings were likely attributable to the greater structural rigidity of holo-OVT presented with significant decreases in hydrophobicity index (432.20) than apo-OVT (522.40). Ultimately, holo-OVT exhibited significant improvements in foaming and emulsifying stability than apo-OVT.

In the realm of oil–water separation technologies, membrane-based separation emerges as an efficacious approach. Nevertheless, crafting a hydrophilic membrane capable of effectively segregating herbal volatile oil remains a formidable challenge. Our study introduces a facile in situ assembly strategy for fabricating a double-crosslinked composite coating comprising phytate (PA)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) polyelectrolyte complexes and PA-Fe 3 ⁺ assemblies. The PA within the PA-PEI/Fe 3 ⁺ coatings form a double cross-linking layer through interactions with amine groups and metal ions, thereby enhancing interfacial interactions and structural integrity of the membranes. Consequently, the resultant PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe 3 ⁺ membranes exhibit improved coating stability, pronounced hydrophilicity, and exceptional antifouling capabilities, rendering them highly suitable for the separation of diverse herbal volatile oil-in-water emulsions. Furthermore, they possess the capability for reuse with an average retention ratio exceeding 90% and a pure water flux reaching up to 3200 L·m⁻ 2 ·h⁻ 1 . Additionally, they demonstrate long-term stability and resistance to corrosion. With a simplistic yet efficient preparation process, the PVDF/PA-PEI/Fe 3 ⁺ membrane holds significant potential for the extraction of oils from herbal volatile oil-in-water emulsions.

The design and preparation of fluorescent sensors for detecting toxic ions in aqueous environments are of paramount importance. In this study, a europium metal–organic framework (Eu-MOF), constructed from Eu3+, the rigid 2,2′-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (2,2′-H2bpdc) ligand, and the auxiliary 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) ligand, was synthesized through hydrothermal synthesis. The synthesized Eu-MOF demonstrated remarkable water stability, pH stability, thermal stability, and photostability. It showed a high quantum yield of 42.6%, along with an average fluorescence lifetime of 0.9002 ms, which could enhance its sensitivity when employed as a fluorescent probe. The Eu-MOF could function as a fluorescent probe to quantitatively detect trace amounts of Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− via fluorescence quenching. Their detection sensitivities are 1.527 × 104 M−1, 1.378 × 104 M−1 and 1.463 × 104 M−1 respectively, with detection limits as low as 0.28 μM, 0.19 μM and 0.09 μM. Additionally, the Eu-MOF sensor exhibited excellent selectivity, anti-interference ability, repeatability (after undergoing five cycles) and practical feasibility. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of its fluorescence properties and sensing mechanisms was carried out. Based on density functional theory calculations, two energy transfer pathways in the process of Eu3+ ion luminescence sensitized by the double ligands 2,2′-H2bpdc and Phen were identified. The fluorescence sensing mechanism of the Eu-MOF for detecting Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− involved photoinduced electron transfer from the antenna ligand to the organic molecules and competitive absorption of excitation energy. Owing to its high stability and sensitivity, the Eu-MOF holds great potential for practical applications as a sensor for Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− in aqueous environments.

Developing acid-tolerant photocatalysts for efficient water oxidation in unmodified Fe3+ redox media is pivotal for realizing solar energy storage via the “hydrogen farm” strategy, yet remains challenging due to intrinsic charge recombination and corrosion issues. Here, we introduce a nitrogen-doped hexagonal/tetragonal BaTa2O6 heterophase photocatalyst decorated with spatially separated Pt and CoOx cocatalysts for stable oxygen evolution in acidic Fe(NO3)3 solutions (pH 1.8). The heterophase junction, corroborated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), creates a directional built-in electric field (evidenced by surface photovoltage spectroscopy) that minimizes interfacial energy loss (<0.2 eV, confirmed by density functional theory calculations). Selective photodeposition of Pt at particle termini and CoOx on lateral surfaces spatially decouples Fe3+ reduction and water oxidation half-reactions, effectively suppressing charge recombination. Enabled by nitrogen doping-induced bandgap narrowing (light absorption up to 630 nm), the optimized catalyst achieves an unprecedented O2 evolution rate of 124 μmol h−1 under visible light, with apparent quantum efficiencies of 10.5% at 420 nm and 0.3% at 600 nm. The system maintains over 93% activity for 12 h and demonstrates robust compatibility with Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycling, confirmed by the stoichiometric production of H2/O2 (2 : 1) in a Z-scheme overall water splitting configuration. This work establishes a novel heterophase engineering approach for designing acid-stable photocatalysts, offering a promising pathway toward practical solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Herein we designed a novel photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on Fe 3+ doped ZnO-Ag photocatalyst (Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag) for ultrasensitive Hg 2+ detection by using exonuclease III-assisted target recycling and DNAzyme-catalyzed amplification. Firstly, Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag was synthesized to provide photocurrent under visible light irradiation. Secondly, target Hg 2+ was determined by hairpin DNA probes on the Fe 3+ /ZnO-Ag modified ITO based on T-Hg 2+ -T, and then Hg 2+ was released by the digestion of exonuclease III to double-stranded DNA. Finally, the photocurrent markedly decreased due to catalysis of hemin/G-quadruplex toward 4-chloro-1-naphthol. Under optimal conditions, the photocurrents were linearly related to Hg 2+ concentrations form 0. 5 nM to 100 nM with a detection limit of 0. 1 nM at the 3 S blank criterion. More importantly, the developed biosensor exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, and stability, meanwhile, this analysis platform held great potential for testing real water samples in future.

Developing probes with good biocompatibility and realizing intracellular detection in living cells are of great significance for biomedicine and life sciences, but remain a challenge presently. In this paper, we describe a rapid and highly selective biosensor for Fe3+ detection in living cells based on the Maillard reaction fluorescent products (MRFPs) of glutathione and ascorbic acid as a probe. Experiments show that the MRFPs are non-cytotoxic and possess excellent biocompatibility. Moreover, the MRFPs show a rapid response and good selectivity towards Fe3+ over other metal ions under physiological pH conditions in vitro. The introduction of Fe3+ can quench the fluorescence of MRFPs, and the fluorescence intensity of system decreases linearly with the increasing concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 0.05–50 μM with the detection limit of 4.6 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Moreover, the recognition mechanism has been discussed, which is attributed to the charge transfer from excited-state MRFPs molecules to metal ions. In addition, the MRFPs have been successfully demonstrated to be a good imaging probe for Fe3+ sensing in living cells. This study shows that the biocompatible MRFPs might hold great potential for applications in bioimaging, diagnosis, and therapy of intracellular diseases.
