Flocculation of submicron particles in water-based drilling fluids by CMC-g-DMDAAC

Shuanglei Peng,Guancheng Jiang,Xinliang Li,Lili Yang,Fan Liu,Yinbo He

During the process of recirculating drilling fluids, the removal of useless solids, especially submicron particles, in drilling fluids is the most problematic issue in drilling operations. The cost and efficiency of currently used technologies are the two issues that have to be addressed urgently. In this study, the novel flocculant CMC- g -DMDAAC was synthesized by grafting diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC) onto carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC). The physicochemical structure of the CMC- g -DMDAAC product was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy, and determination of the ζ-potential. A kaolinite suspension, a bentonite suspension, and drilling fluids from an oilfield were selected to evaluate the flocculation performance of CMC- g -DMDAAC by testing the products’ turbidities and particle size distributions. In comparison, the flocculation performances of chitosan, CMC, and commercial hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) were also tested under the same conditions. The results showed that CMC- g -DMDAAC exhibited steady flocculation performances for all clay suspensions and drilling fluids at all pH ranges at low dosage. The scavenging capacity of submicron particles in drilling fluids was also excellent for the tested product.

Degradation kinetics and mechanism of penicillin G in aqueous matrices by ionizing radiation

Libing Chu,Shuting Zhuang,Jianlong Wang

The gamma radiation induced-degradation of a β-lactam antibiotic, penicillin G was investigated in aqueous solution. Special attention was paid to the effects of the organic substances such as peptone and glucose on penicillin G degradation, which can be found in the wastewater of the factories producing antibiotics. Results showed that gamma radiation was effective to degrade and deactivate penicillin G in pure water. With the initial concentrations of 0.27   mM, 1.34   mM and 2.68   mM, a complete removal of penicillin G could be achieved at the adsorbed doses of 2.5   kGy, 10   kGy and 20   kGy, respectively. Penicilloic acid from the β-lactam ring cleavage and a series of fragment compounds such as thiazolidine and penicillic acid were identified during gamma irradiation-induced degradation of penicillin G. Addition of Fe 2+ was efficient to enhance the mineralization. The TOC removal efficiency of penicillin G was 21.7% using gamma irradiation alone at 10   kGy, which increased to 56.4% with 1.0   mM Fe 2+ addition. The gamma radiation-induced degradation of penicillin G was inhibited in the presence of peptone and glucose and the inhibitive effect increased with increasing their concentrations. The rate constant, k of the pseudo first-order kinetics decreased by 74% and 64% in the presence of 1.0   g/L of peptone and glucose, respectively, and by 96% and 89% in the presence of 10   g/L of peptone and glucose, respectively. The ratio of k / k 0 was increased by 1.3 times with H 2 O 2 addition and by 3 times with Fe 2+ addition, in the presence of 10   g/L of glucose. Adding Fe 2+ was effective to improve the ionizing radiation induced degradation of penicillin G antibiotic in the glucose-containing wastewater.

An S-scheme TiO2/g-C3N4 nanocomposite effectively degrades phenanthrene under visible light

Ting-Ting Li,Meng-Meng Xie,Hong-Yang Wang,Jun-Sheng Wang,Jia-Horng Lin,Ching-Wen Lou

It is a challenge to effectively degrade phenanthrene (PHE) pollutants, which are widely present in aquatic environments, in order to reduce harm to humans and ecosystems. In this study, an S-scheme TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic system is constructed using 0D TiO 2 nanospheres and 2D g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets for the removal of PHE from water under sunlight irradiation. The effects of irradiation time, quality ratio of TiO 2 to g-C 3 N 4 , and cycle time on the performance of the TiO 2 /CN photocatalyst are investigated. The experimental results show that the ratio of TiO 2 to g-C 3 N 4 significantly affects the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalyst. Under the optimal ratio of TiO 2 to g-C 3 N 4 (50 % TiO 2 /CN), the apparent reaction rate constant for phenanthrene reached 0.00796 min −1 , which is 11.5 times higher than that of pure TiO 2 (0.00069 min −1 ). The tests of optical performance and photoelectrochemical properties further confirmed that the construction of the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 S-type photocatalyst successfully enhanced the spatial separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and ensured a continuous supply of energy during the redox reaction process. Converting highly toxic phenanthrene into a non-toxic green degradation product provides an practical strategy for the safe treatment of PHE in aqueous environments through the use of visible-light-driven heterojunction photocatalysts. Additionally, the data collected on phenanthrene degradation in this study will provide valuable references for developing degradation methods for other PAHs, such as naphthalene, anthracene, and pyrene.

A novel g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction for ultrasensitive detection of bisphenol A residues

Xin Jiang,Han Jiang,Yimin Tang,Rui Wang,Wenxue Wang,Libin Yang,Bing Zhao

Semiconductor heterojunction with functional integration can be used as an excellent matrix for the ultrasensitive detection of bisphenol A (BPA) with low molecular affinity. Here, a simple, low-cost and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) strategy using g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 heterojunction as substrate was presented for detection of BPA residues in foods. The g-C 3 N 4 /TiO 2 achieved specific chemisorption for target analyte by the formation of intermolecular H-bond between g-C 3 N 4 and BPA. And, a high-efficiency carrier separation in TiO 2 induced by heterostructure could be achieved for charge transfer between the substrate and molecule by a “donor-bridge-acceptor” charge-transfer mode. Due to the synergistic/collaborative contributions of two monomers in heterojunction, the SERS enhancement factor was as high as 3.77 × 10 7 . The detection limit of BPA residues in foods (milk, juice and drinking water) was as low as 10 −9  mol·L −1 , far below the EU standard. The developed substrate also exhibited excellent stability and anti-interference capability.

Arginine-Modified Hemin Enhances G-Quadruplex DNAzyme Peroxidase Activity for High Sensitivity Detection

Bin Liu,Tian Wang,Dehui Qiu,Xinrong Yan,Yuan Liu,Jean-Louis Mergny,Xiaobo Zhang,David Monchaud,Huangxian Ju,Jun Zhou

Hemin/G-quadruplex (hG4) complexes are frequently used as artificial peroxidase-like enzymatic systems (termed G4 DNAzymes) in many biosensing applications, in spite of a rather low efficiency, notably in terms of detection limits. To tackle this issue, we report herein a strategy in which hemin is chemically modified with the amino acids found in the active site of parent horseradish peroxidase (HRP), with the aim of recreating an environment conducive to high catalytic activity. When hemin is conjugated with a single arginine, it associates with G4 to create an arginine–hemin/G4 (R-hG4) DNAzyme that exhibits improved catalytic performances, characterized by kinetic analysis and DFT calculations. The practical relevance of this system was demonstrated with the implementation of biosensing assays enabling the chemiluminescent detection of G4-containing DNA and colorimetry detection of the flap endonuclease 1 (FEN1) enzyme with a high efficiency and sensitivity. Our results thus provide a guide for future enzyme engineering campaigns to create ever more efficient peroxidase-mimicking DNA-based systems.

Efficient and stable Nb2O5 modified g-C3N4 photocatalyst for removal of antibiotic pollutant

Yuanzhi Hong,Changsheng Li,Guangyi Zhang,Yadong Meng,Bingxin Yin,Yong Zhao,Weidong Shi

The removal of pollutant using photocatalysis technology has received much attention due to the increasing serious environmental contamination. In this study, novel Nb 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions were fabricated via a facile one-step heating strategy for the first time. Compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 and Nb 2 O 5 , the as-prepared Nb 2 O 5 /g-C 3 N 4 samples exhibited remarkably enhancing photocatalytic activity for degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) both under visible and simulated solar light irradiation. It was found that the 3% Nb 2 O 5 content of heterojunction (3%NO/CN) showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency for TC-HCl degradation, which is about 2.9-fold and 2.4-fold higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 under visible and simulated solar light irradiation, respectively. In addition, the 3%NO/CN sample not only displayed excellent photocatalytic recyclability, but also can efficiently remove TC-HCl even under strong acidic condition (pH   =   1). Moreover, the 3%NO/CN heterojunction also exhibited dramatically enhancement of photocatalytic activity for degradation of other fluoroquinolones antibiotic, such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LEV). The highly enhancing photoactivity was attributed to the formation of a heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and Nb 2 O 5 , which could greatly suppresses the photogenerated electron–hole pair’s recombination. The active species trapping and ESR experiments indicated that superoxide radicals and holes are the major active species in which contributing to the photocatalytic process. This work will bring about potential application in treatment of antibiotic pollutant and solar energy conversion.

Efficient visible-light driven photocatalysts: coupling TiO2(AB) nanotubes with g-C3N4 nanoflakes

Wang Wenwen,Yang Dongjiang,Yang Weiyou,Sun Jin,Hou Huilin

The wide application of the titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) as the photocatalysts is greatly hindered by its intrinsic large band gap and usually fast electron–hole recombination. Here, we reported the exploration of coupling g-C 3 N 4 nanoflakes to TiO 2 nanotubes with the anatase and TiO 2 (B) mixed phases (TiO 2 (AB)) toward the efficient visible-light-driven hybrid photocatalyst. It is found that coupling TiO 2 (AB) nanotubes with g-C 3 N 4 nanoflakes could bring a profoundly extension the visible light adsorption capacity and enhanced photogenerated carrier separation. Accordingly, they exhibit much higher efficient photocatalytic activities toward the degradation of sulforhodamine B under the visible light irradiation, which is enhanced for nearly 15 times to those of the TiO 2 (AB) and g-C 3 N 4 , suggesting their promising practical applications as novel and efficient semiconductor photocatalysts for the water purification.

Preparation of direct Z-scheme Bi2Sn2O7/g-C3N4 composite with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Xiaojuan Zhao,Jiajie Yu,Hongda Cui,Tianhe Wang

In this study, for the first time, BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalysts were synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction method. The influence of systematically varied g-C 3 N 4 contents on the photocatalytic activity was investigated in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was evaluated through the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and acid red 18 (AR 18) as target pollutants under visible light irradiation. The results demonstrated the photocatalytic performance of the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 composites was greatly enhanced compared to pure photocatalyst. In addition, the optimized photocatalytic efficiency for MB and AR 18 was achieved when the mass percentage of g-C 3 N 4 in the composite was 60%. And based on our analysis, it is proposed that the BSO/g-C 3 N 4 has the characteristic of direct Z-scheme type photocatalyst. The excellent photocatalytic performance was interpreted in terms of enhanced visible light absorption and efficient separation of electrons and holes. Compared with hydrothermal method, this method only involves sintering in air at a moderately elevated temperature, so it is efficient and more preferred for industrial scale production.

Integration of G-quadruplex and DNA-templated Ag NCs for nonarithmetic information processing

Ru-Ru Gao,Tian-Ming Yao,Xiao-Yan Lv,Yan-Yan Zhu,Yi-Wei Zhang,Shuo Shi

To create sophisticated molecular logic circuits from scratch, you may not believe how common the building blocks can be and how diverse and powerful such circuits can be when scaled up. Using the two simple building blocks of G-quadruplex and silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs), we experimentally construct a series of multifunctional, label-free, and multi-output logic circuits to perform nonarithmetic functions: a 1-to-2 decoder, a 4-to-2 encoder, an 8-to-3 encoder, dual transfer gates, a 2 : 1 multiplexer, and a 1 : 2 demultiplexer. Moreover, a parity checker which is capable of identifying odd and even numbers from natural numbers is constructed conceptually. Finally, a multi-valued logic gate (ternary inhibit gate) is readily achieved by taking this DNA/Ag NC system as a universal platform. All of the above logic circuits share the same building blocks, indicating the great prospects of the assembly of nanomaterials and DNA for biochemical logic devices. Considering its biocompatibility, the novel prototypes developed here may have potential applications in the fields of biological computers and medical diagnosis and serve as a promising proof of principle in the not-too-distant future.

Synthesis of boron-doped g-C3N4 with enhanced electro-catalytic activity and stability

Suyun Zhang,Lina Gao,Dongliang Fan,Xiaomeng Lv,Yuan Li,Zaoxue Yan

Herein, we rationally designed 3D carbon nitride hierarchical architecture with an interconnected network of graphene-analogue nanosheets and doped with boron through co-condensation strategy. XPS spectra confirmed the incorporation of boron atoms in the polymeric g-C 3 N 4 , while X-ray diffraction and IR indicated the characteristic structural properties of pristine g-C 3 N 4 and boron-doped g-C 3 N 4 (B x -GCN). The B x -GCN shows promising electrocatalytic activity and stability in the reduction of p-nitrophenol according to cyclic voltammograms analysis. Additionally, the use of this metal-free, organic, semiconducting polymer as an electrocatalyst would open wide application of hybrid carbon nitride materials from both point view of economy and environment.

Core-shell LaPO4/g-C3N4 nanowires for highly active and selective CO2 reduction

Mengli Li,Lingxia Zhang,Xiangqian Fan,Meiying Wu,Min Wang,Ruolin Cheng,Linlin Zhang,Heliang Yao,Jianlin Shi

We have synthesized a series of LaPO 4 /g-C 3 N 4 core-shell nanowires via an in-situ hydrothermal growth of LaPO 4 nanorods in tubular g-C 3 N 4 and investigated their photocatalytic activity in CO 2 reduction. It was found that in the synthesized core-shell structure, the outer g-C 3 N 4 nano-shells coated on the LaPO 4 nanorod cores resulted in the enhanced light absorption and charge carrier separation/transfer ability, thus improved the room temperature photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposites in CO 2 photocatalytic reduction compared with the g-C 3 N 4 and LaPO 4 individuals. A maximum CO yield of 0.433   μmol   has been obtained from CO 2 reduction within 1   h irradiation on 30   mg nanocomposite photocatalyst under the absence of any noble metal. Finally, a possible mechanism, which is featured with LaPO 4 activation due to significantly promoted separation/transfer of photo-generated charge carriers, was proposed. The encouraging performance in CO 2 photoreduction demonstrates that this novel nanocomposite will be a prospective material in environmental protection and energy conversion.

Superior photocatalytic performance of LaFeO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanocomposites under visible light irradiation

Ke Xu,Jian Feng

New types of LaFeO3/g-C3N4 heterostructures were successfully prepared and the enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and degradation activities under visible light irradiation were determined. They possessed the features of a Z-scheme photocatalysis system. The photoexcited electrons on the conduction band of LaFeO3 were transferred to the valence band of g-C3N4 by the solid–solid intimately contacted interfaces, where the electrons and holes were recombined, and thus improved the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes of g-C3N4. The LaFeO3/g-C3N4 heterostructures showed a higher hydrogen evolution rate and a higher amount of ˙OH than pure LaFeO3 and g-C3N4. The construction of the LaFeO3/g-C3N4 heterostructures was used to demonstrate an effective strategy for improving the photocatalytic property. The 5%-LaFeO3/g-C3N4 exhibited the highest photodegradation and water splitting rate. More than 95% of methylene blue (MB) was degraded after 15 min in the presence of 25 mg EDTA-2Na in 100 mL MB solution which was irradiated using a 3 W light-emitting diode. The 5%-LaFeO3/g-C3N4 heterojunction nanocomposite had a maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 158 μmol g−1 h−1.
