The mature processes of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted considerable interest. However, the low sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors is still challenging, and constrains its practical applications. Bimetallic nanoparticles are of interest owing to their excellent catalytic properties. This excellent feature of bimetallic nanoparticles can solve the problems existing in MOS gas sensors, such as the low response, high operating temperature and slow response time. To enhance acetone sensing performance, we successfully synthesized Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods. In this work, we discovered that Au-Pd nanoparticles modified on ZnO nanorods can remarkably enhance sensor response. The Au-Pd/ZnO gas sensor has long-term stability and an excellent response/recovery process. This excellent sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles. Moreover, the electronic and chemical sensitization of noble metals also makes a great contribution. This work presents a simple method for preparing Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods and provides a new solution for the detection of acetone based on metal oxide semiconductor.

Conductive polymer-based ammonia gas sensors show advantage in room-temperature response. Polyaniline (PANI)-based ammonia gas sensors were prepared by drop-coating and aerosol-jet printing methods and tested for their ammonia gas sensing properties. The aerosol-jet-printed sensor shows significantly shortened response and recovery time for ammonia sensing. Morphological observations were carried out to investigate the mechanism of the improvement. The crystalline form of PANI was found to transfer in the aerosol-jet printing process and play the critical rule in the ultra-fast response and recovery of the sensor.

Keloids pose a considerable worldwide health issue owing to their continual proliferation, invasiveness, and elevated recurrence rates. Keloids are abnormal scars formed through dysregulated wound healing processes, characterized by excessive keloid fibroblast (KF) proliferation, irregular collagen deposits, and persistent reticular dermis inflammation, which can lead to limited joint mobility, psychological distress, and severe pain and itching. In this study, we present metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived TiO2-based nanoparticles (LA@CTx NPs) synthesized as a phototherapy-gas-therapy nanoplatform, which have the ability to break down collagen, reduce inflammation, and stop the overproliferation of keloid fibroblasts. The MIL-125-derived nanoparticles maintain their crystalline framework while being rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs) and l-arginine (LA), enabling efficient photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation driven by synergistic near-infrared (NIR). Importantly, ROS generated by the NPs can trigger nitric oxide (NO) production by oxidizing LA, with the concentration of NO finely tunable via modulation of light conditions. This allows for a dual therapeutic effect: low NO concentrations suppress inflammation, while higher concentrations induce cell death. In vitro and in vivo investigations show that LA@CTx nanoparticles efficiently eliminate primary keloid lesions and provoke apoptosis in keloid cells by dual-modality activation of photodynamic and photothermal treatments facilitated by single NIR irradiation. The study presents an innovative method of therapy for the clinical treatment of keloids.

In this study, a novel surfactant with pH-responsive properties was developed to address the challenges associated with balancing foaming and defoaming properties in traditional foam drainage gas recovery processes. The surfactant was created by employing primary amine and aldehyde monomers based on the principles of reversible dynamic covalent bonds. Optimal synthesis conditions were determined through an extensive analysis of foaming performance: a molar reaction ratio of primary amine to aldehyde at 10:0.8, a 20-minute reaction time, and a stirring speed of 300 r/min. The formation of dynamic imine bonds was confirmed through infrared spectroscopy. Surface tension measurements revealed that at pH = 8, the surfactant achieved a minimum surface tension of 31.1 mN/m, while at pH = 3, the surface tension exceeded 40 mN/m. Particle size analysis demonstrated a 26.5-fold reduction in particle size as the pH decreased from 8 to 3. Zeta potential tests indicated excellent dispersion stability within the pH range of 3–8, with Zeta potential consistently exceeding 25 mV. Furthermore, the surfactant displayed remarkable foaming and foam stabilizing effects at pH = 8, with initial and 5-minute foam heights reaching 168 mm and 132 mm, respectively. When the pH dropped below 6, the surfactant exhibited rapid defoaming. After six cycles of alternating acid-base environments, it maintained excellent foaming performance, achieving a 5-minute foam height of up to 138 mm. Importantly, it retained its foaming capabilities in formation water solutions with a mineralization degree of 200 g/L. These findings hold significant implications for the development of intelligent environmental response treatments for foam drainage and gas production, enhancing the overall efficiency of drainage and gas production operations.

Interfacial polymerization has emerged as a robust method for fabricating task-specific polyamide (PA) membranes. However, the limited microporosity of highly cross-linked PA membranes constrains their effectiveness in gas separation applications. Herein, we introduce an ionic liquid (IL)-regulated interfacial polymerization process to fabricate polyamide nanofilms incorporating kinked tetrakis (4-aminophenyl) methane monomers. In situ ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy demonstrates that the diffusion of 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) toward the interface increases with the IL/H2O ratio, leading to the formation of a more compact membrane with a higher cross-linking degree. The PA-TAM7/3–60 min membrane exhibits a CO2 permeance of 29.8 GPU and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 109, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bond. Additionally, the highly cross-linked structure imparts the membranes with notable plasticization resistance. Mixed-gas tests (CO2/CH4 = 50/50, v/v) reveal that the PA-TAM7/3–60 min membrane experiences only a 2% reduction in CO2 permeance and a 10% decrease in CO2/CH4 selectivity at a CO2 partial pressure of 300 PSIG, compared to its performance at 30 PSIG. The ease of tuning membrane structure and gas separation performance, along with its excellent plasticization resistance, underscores the potential of these PA membranes for task-specific gas separations.

Two-dimensional material (2D material) MXene has great application potential in gas sensors because of its excellent controllable performance and vast specific surface area. In this study, we used a straightforward in-situ electrostatic self-assembly technique to create Fe(OH)3/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites, which were then used to fabricate gas sensors for ammonia detection at room temperature (25 °C). Several characterization methods were performed aimed at determining the surface appearance and construction of the nanocomposites, and the sensing characteristics and mechanism were also systematically examined. The findings demonstrate the effective incorporation of amorphous Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles on the surface of Ti3C2Tx. Additionally the nanocomposites of Fe(OH)3/Ti3C2Tx have considerably higher specific surface area than pure Ti3C2Tx, hence offering more active NH3 adsorption sites. The response of the sensor to 100 ppm NH3 was 48.6% at room temperature, which was 9.3 times more higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx. The sensors also have the advantages of long-term stability (33 d), low NH3 detection limit (500 ppb), and rapid recovery time (85 s) and response times (78 s). It is anticipated that this work will be helpful for developing the new generation of wearable ammonia sensors at room temperature.

Sustainable lithium-based energy storage and conversion systems, such as lithium-ion batteries, rely on efficient lithium extraction methods from brine sources. Traditional H 2 TiO 3 (HTO) lithium-ion sieves (LIS), though effective, face challenges in optimizing lithium adsorption efficiency and stability. Herein, we introduce a Fe-doping strategy in HTO (Fe-HTO) that artificially substitutes Ti sites, generating lattice defects and oxygen vacancies (OVs). This modification enhances lithium-ion diffusion kinetics and increases active adsorption sites, significantly improving selective lithium extraction efficiency. With Fe-HTO, the equilibrium adsorption time for lithium-ion in shale gas wastewater (SGW), with pH adjustment to 12, is reduced by 20 h compared to undoped HTO. Fe-HTO reaches an adsorption capacity of 37.20 mg/g within 4 h and retains 99.2 % of this capacity after 10 adsorption/desorption cycles at room temperature, demonstrating high structural stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations clarify that Fe doping lowers the diffusion energy barrier for lithium-ion, accelerating both lithium-ion diffusion and adsorption. Given this, the work illustrates the potential of heteroatom doping to boost adsorption kinetics, offering promising applications for rapid lithium extraction and similar resource recovery challenges.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a serious menace to human health and the environment, it is of great practical meaning to develop a fast and accurate gas sensor for monitoring low-concentration NO 2 at near room temperature (RT). Here, the polymorphism of In 2 O 3 was regulated with controllable mixed-phase ratios of hexagonal In 2 O 3 (h-In 2 O 3 ) and cubic In 2 O 3 (c-In 2 O 3 ) via a graphene oxide (GO)-mediated solvothermal approach and annealing treatment. The GO-mediation markedly promoted the formation of h-In 2 O 3 and defect content. The morphology, specific surface area, surface chemical state and activation energy were roundly analyzed. The NO 2 -sensing performance results showed that the sensor based on an 8 wt% GO-mediated In 2 O 3 sample (In 2 O 3 -8) exhibited an ultrahigh response of 1021 towards 1 ppm NO 2 at 30℃, which was 2.3 times higher than that of In 2 O 3 without GO-mediation. At the same time, the response/recovery time of In 2 O 3 -8 was significantly shorter than other sensors. Additionally, the In 2 O 3 -8 sensor possessed good repeatability and long stability. In 2 O 3 -8 with an appropriate GO-mediated content provided a suitable h-In 2 O 3 /c-In 2 O 3 phase junction interface, abundant oxygen vacancies and elevated Fermi energy levels of In 2 O 3 , which activated the surface sites and ultimately enhanced the sensing performance.

The fabrication of gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) with high sensitivity and low detection limits is a crucial research domain. Modulation of microstructural features is a critical strategy to enhance gas sensing performance, owing to its controllability and inherent design flexibility. The double-shell structure amplifies active surface sites and nested effects, further heightening gas-sensor interaction for escalated adsorption efficiency and reaction rates. In this paper, we fabricated hierarchical double-shell ZnO hollow microsphere (D-ZnO) sensors via a scalable technique, incorporating uniformly spherical carbon templates. These D-ZnO-based sensors demonstrated a high response (32.42) to 100 ppm n-butanol and achieved a low detection limit (DL) of 96 ppb at the optimized temperature of 240 °C. Such excellent gas sensing performance of D-ZnO can be attributed to the unique spatial structure of hierarchical double-shell for the modulation of gas diffusion pathways and collision frequency.

The leakage of HCHO gas has direct and irreversible damage on both human health and the environment. However, the current commercial electronic nose (E-nose) has low accuracy in predicting the concentration of HCHO. In this work, a sensor array consisting of 6 gas sensors was fabricated and combined with advanced deep learning algorithms to achieve accurate prediction of HCHO concentration. High-performance SnO 2 sensing material with high specific surface area was synthesized by applying the Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) sacrificial template, and the response of the SnO 2 gas sensor was as high as 15.098, which is much higher than that of commonly used commercial sensors. In addition, the sensing performance of the SnO 2 sensor, including response, selectivity and repeatability etc., were investigated. Afterward, a Formaldehyde Prediction Network (FPNet) model was proposed for processing the HCHO gas dataset and cosine annealing was added to gradually reduce the learning rate during training to help the model converge to the optimal solution. Furthermore, the residual structures with different number of layers were compared, and the 3-layer residual structure expressed the most accurate results of concentration prediction of the HCHO gas, with an MSE of 9.003, MAPE of 0.015, and R 2 of 0.998. This study provides a new idea from sensor preparation to pattern recognition algorithm research, effectively solving the problems of the low response of commercial sensors to HCHO and the low accuracy of pattern recognition algorithms for E-nose datasets.

Exploring the structure–activity relationship between the performance of gas sensors and the structure of semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) nanomaterials is crucial for understanding and designing gas-sensing materials and overcoming the application limitations of SMO-based gas sensors. Regulation of a single SMO microstructure provides a promising solution to address this scientific problem due to its controllable composition. In this study, we control the grain boundary (GB) density of Fe 2 O 3 nanomaterials using a simple solvothermal method. They have similar chemical compositions and crystal phases, providing an ideal platform for studying the influence of the GB density on the gas-sensing performance. Gas-sensing tests showed that the Fe 2 O 3 -1 sensor with medium GB density and the Fe 2 O 3 -2 sensor with high GB density had higher sensitivity and selectivity than the Fe 2 O 3 -0 sensors with low GB density before reaching the optimal operating temperature. However, when the GB density increased, the response to acetone decreased slightly, whereas the optimal operating temperature decreased. This work highlights the unique performance of the GB density in enhancing the gas sensitivity of a single SMO. Graphical abstract

The generation of high levels of ammonia in industries, agricultural sectors, and water treatment plants has triggered the necessity to detect high ammonia concentrations in a flexible way to ensure proactive measures for protecting humans and the environment. Therefore, it is essential to develop highly sensitive multifunctional sensors that have long-term stability, high durability, and a large stretch range. In our work, a novel approach was developed for fabricating flexible sensors consisting of polyurethane (PU) yarn and the loaded Ti 3 C 2 T x /CeO 2 /TiO 2 (abbreviated as MTCe) nanocomposites. The structures and morphology of the yarn-shaped sensors were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other characterisation methods. In addition, gas and strain responses were recorded and analysed using an AES-4SD flexible electronic device. The response of the yarn-shaped sensors to 100 ppm NH 3 was 42.9 % at room temperature (25 °C), indicating its excellent gas sensitivity. In addition, the sensors exhibited some key advantages, such as a large stretch range (60 %), high sensitivity (up to 385.285), and good durability (200 stretches/releases at 20 % stretch), which may be considered a remarkable achievement in the field of flexible sensor manufacturing for multiple applications.
