In-situ chlorine radical generation from captured Cl- for redox synergy in electrocatalytic hydrodehalogenation

Deng Chuyan,Zhou Yujun,Cai Xin,Zhang Xuan,Wang Yunlong,Qi Junwen,Zhu Zhigao,Yang Yue,Li Jiansheng

Electrocatalytic dehalogenation can effectively detoxify chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs) by cleaving C–Cl bonds in wastewater treatment, however, it often fails to achieve complete mineralization. In particular, the fate of the released Cl - has often been overlooked and whether they can be recycled and reutilized to facilitate pollutant degradation has remained unclear. Herein, a reduction–oxidation cascade system is constructed, in which Cl - liberated during electrocatalytic reduction is directly converted into reactive chlorine species (RCS) during the subsequent oxidation step, enabling complete mineralization of organic pollutants. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) confirm the in situ reutilization of detached Cl - . Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) visualizes the adsorption and transformation of Cl - on the electrode surface, while ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations reveal the interfacial concentration distribution of Cl - and the energy profiles of its migration. This work establishes a cascade electrocatalytic strategy that couples reduction and oxidation, enabling chlorine reutilization and providing a sustainable pathway for the removal and resource recovery of COPs.

In Situ Gel–Nano Transformable Hydrogel for Therapeutic Intervention in Refractory Inflammation-Related Trauma

Jingxuan Xu,Yifeng Zhu,Guangjian Fan,Yaoyao Li,Yuxiang Zhang,Bowen Li,Wenwei Cai,Chenyue Zhan

In this study, we introduce a novel injectable hydrogel, termed hDAGel, which exhibits a unique gel-to-nano (Gel–Nano) configuration inversion capability in response to local pathological microenvironments. The hydrogel is formulated with a high loading density of dopamine, serving the dual function: an injectable dual-component drug-loading gel and triggering the in situ formation of drug-loaded polydopamine-based nanoparticles upon dopamine release and oxidative polymerization. This Gel–Nano transformation enables sustained and targeted drug delivery precisely at inflamed or injured sites. Moreover, hDAGel effectively scavenges excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) within inflamed tissues, alleviating oxidative stress and modulating immune responses. Upon local administration, such as intracerebral injection for cerebral ischemia or topical/intradermal application for allogeneic skin transplantation, hDAGel persists at the target site and dynamically responds to microenvironmental stimuli, releasing therapeutic nanoparticles that suppress inflammation and immune overactivation. Collectively, hDAGel integrates the advantageous features of injectable, adhesive hydrogels with the precise and controlled release of nanoparticle-delivered therapeutics via Gel–Nano transformation. This multifunctional platform holds great promise for treating complex inflammation-associated conditions, including neuroinflammation and transplant rejection, by providing localized, sustained, and responsive therapy with enhanced antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects.

Engineering built-in electric field in NiMoO4/FeOOH heterostructures for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Yiwen Chen,Jun Guo,Penglong Li,Buming Chen,Hui Huang

A polarized crystalline/amorphous interface is constructed for OER catalysis. • Built-in electric fields regulate dynamic electrochemical reconstruction. • Efficient hydrogen production is achieved under harsh alkaline conditions. Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts are essential for industrial-scale hydrogen production, yet regulating electrochemical reconstruction while maintaining structural stability remains challenging. Herein, a crystalline-weakly crystalline NiMoO 4 @FeOOH heterostructure is constructed to enable built-in electric field (BEF)-driven reconstruction regulation. The Fermi-level mismatch at the heterointerface induces charge redistribution and generates a polarized BEF, which directs the reconstruction pathway toward highly active NiFeOOH species while suppressing excessive structural degradation. The optimized catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 255 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 52.1 mV dec −1 , and stable operation for 100 h in 30 wt% KOH at 80 °C, with an energy consumption of 4.84 kWh Nm −3 H 2 . Operando Raman, in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and XPS analyses reveal that the BEF accelerates Ni oxidation, promotes OH − adsorption, and facilitates interfacial charge transfer during reconstruction. Density functional theory calculations further confirm optimized oxygen intermediate adsorption and reduced reaction barriers. This work establishes a BEF-driven electrochemical reconstruction strategy for coupling interfacial electronic regulation with dynamic catalyst evolution toward high-performance OER electrocatalysts. Enhancing CO Selectivity in CO2 Photoreduction via Local Hydrophobic Modifications in S-Scheme Heterojunctions

Shicheng Liu,Xi Chen,Jing Xiang Ng,Xiong Liu,Qulan Zhou,Na Li,Shuzhou Li

To address the challenge of competitive H2O adsorption in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, localized hydrophobicity-modified S-scheme heterojunctions (WS/o-CN) were synthesized by combining WS2 and g-C3N4, which was modified by the addition of CTAB. Structural characterization and contact angle testing confirmed the formation of S-scheme heterojunctions and the specific structural role of CTAB. The optical, electrochemical properties, and gas adsorption capacity of the catalysts were analyzed, followed by in situ XPS and fs-TA tests to investigate the energy band structure and electron transfer paths. These results showed that localized hydrophobic modification reduces the surface proton concentration while maintaining efficient electron–hole separation in the S-scheme heterojunction. Testing the photocatalytic activity of WS/o-CN showed that the yield of CO reached 23.24 μmol g–1 h–1 with a high selectivity of 74.7%. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations and in situ DRIFTS tests, the results demonstrated that the introduction of the nonpolar long carbon chain CTAB effectively inhibits the adsorption of heterogeneous H2O on the catalyst surface while enhancing the maximum adsorption of CO2. The localized hydrophobicity reduces the proton concentration on the surface of g-C3N4, which in turn suppresses the absorption of photogenerated electrons by the HER reaction. This facilitates the efficient and selective conversion of CO2 to CO. This study highlights a surface engineering strategy that couples electronic structure optimization with interfacial wettability control, providing valuable insights into the design of selective and efficient photocatalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion.

A novel brachytherapy and chemotherapy integrated ureteral stent: In vitro and in vivo study

Xiaotian Yang,Xueliang Zhou,Zhanyun Zhou,Yipu Li,Chengzhi Zhang,Yingqi Liu,Xiaohan Ma,Yanan Li,Yebin Wang,Dechao Jiao

Ureteral carcinoma remains a major clinical challenge and requires effective localized treatment. Here, we report a novel 125 I seed brachytherapy (ISB) and doxorubicin (DOX) chemotherapy integrated ureteral stent (IUS), which enables simultaneous urinary drainage and chemoradiotherapy. This study was divided into three parts. First, ISB and DOX significantly reduced T24 cell viability and inhibited migration and invasion in an in vivo study ( p < 0.01). Second, a T24 xenograft mouse model demonstrated that the (DOX + ISB) group exhibited greater tumor suppression than the DOX ( p = 0.08) and ISB ( p = 0.02) groups, with decreased Ki-67 and Bcl-2 expression and increased apoptosis (all p < 0.01) in an in vitro study. Third, the IUS was successfully implanted in normal beagle dogs ( n = 30) without surgical complications. The ureteral diameter increased with increasing cumulative brachytherapy and sustained DOX release ( p < 0.05). Histological analysis revealed progressive tissue damage and fibrosis, with increased expression of α-SMA, Caspase-3, and Collagen-1 in the 0.8 mCi + 20 mg DOX group ( p < 0.05), whereas PCNA expression was highest in the Control group (0 mCi + 0 mg DOX). In conclusion, the newly designed IUS is safe and technically feasible in animals; clinical studies will be required to evaluate its use in humans.

Surface functionalized barium sulfate nanoparticles: controlled in situ synthesis and application in bone cement

Chao Fang,Ruixia Hou,Kefeng Zhou,Feibin Hua,Yang Cong,Jianfeng Zhang,Jun Fu,Ya-Jun Cheng

The controlled synthesis of surface functionalized BaSO4 nanoparticles with a diameter below 50 nm is achieved by combining the in situ generation of SO42− and the use of a difunctional surface modification agent, (2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyldimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammoniumhydroxide (MSAH). Particularly, a pre-decomposition process of the SO42− precursor (S2O82−) is applied to decouple the in situ generation of SO42− and precipitation of BaSO4. As a result, the nucleation and growth of the BaSO4 particles is manipulated, which significantly reduces the particle size. Different combinations of the pre-decomposition time and MSAH/BaCl2 molar ratios showed a remarkable influence on the morphology and surface functionality of the BaSO4 particles. Furthermore, the morphology control by using other difunctional surface modification agents e.g. 3-sulfopropylmethacrylate potassium salt (SMPS) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMSA) is examined. The MSAH-functionalized BaSO4 nanoparticles, used as s filler in bone cements, effectively improved the bending modulus and compressive strength of the poly (methyl methacrylate), PMMA, bone cements. The bone cement with MSAH-functionalized BaSO4 nanoparticles exhibited good radiopacity. Moreover, in vitro cell culture experiments demonstrated an improved biocompatibility compared to the bare BaSO4 particles. The MSAH-functionalized BaSO4 nanoparticles may be an ideal candidate material as a bone cement filler.

A lipophilic prodrug of Danshensu: preparation, characterization, and in vitro and in vivo evaluation

Xue-Jiao GUO,Xue-Jiao FAN,Bin QIAO,Zhi-Qiang GE

Danshensu [3-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid, DSS], one of the significant cardioprotective components, is extracted from the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza. In the present study, an ester prodrug of Danshensu (DSS), palmitoyl Danshensu (PDSS), was synthesized with the aim to improve its oral bioavailability and prolong its half-life. The in vitro experiments were carried out to evaluate the physicochemical properties and stability of PDSS. Although the solubility of PDSS in water was only 0.055 mg·mL −1 , its solubility in FaSSIF and FeSSIF reached 4.68 and 9.08 mg·mL −1 , respectively. Octanol-water partition coefficient (log P ) was increased from −2.48 of DSS to 1.90 of PDSS. PDSS was relatively stable in the aqueous solution in pH range from 5.6 to 7.4. Furthermore, the pharmacokinetics in rats was evaluated after oral administration of PDSS and DSS. AUC and t 1/2 of PDSS were enhanced up to 9.8-fold and 2.2-fold, respectively, compared to that of DSS. C max was 1.67 ± 0.11 μg·mL −1 for PDSS and 0.81 ± 0.06 μg·mL −1 for DSS. Thus, these results demonstrated that PDSS had much higher oral bioavailability and longer circulation time than its parent drug.

Sevoflurane Alters Serum Metabolites in Elders and Aging Mice and Increases Inflammation in Hippocampus

Tingting Wang,Xia Wu,Xiaoli Zhao,Jiaqi Li,Jian Yu,Maozheng Sheng,Mingyuan Gao,Yutang Cao,Jiawen Wang,Xiaozhen Guo,Kai Zeng

Purpose Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a central nervous system complication that occurs after anesthesia, particularly among the elderly. However, the neurological pathogenesis of postoperative cognitive dysfunction remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sevoflurane exposure on serum metabolites and hippocampal gene expression in elderly patients and aging mice by metabolomics and transcriptomic analysis and to explore the pathogenesis of sevoflurane induced POCD.Patients and Methods Human serum samples from five patients over 60 years old were collected before sevoflurane anesthesia and 1 hour after anesthesia. Besides, mice aged at 12 months (n=6 per group) were anesthetized with sevoflurane for 2 hours or with sham procedure. Subsequently, serum and hippocampal tissues were harvested for analysis. Further investigation into the relationship between isatin and neuroinflammation was conducted using BV2 microglial cells. Results Sevoflurane anesthesia led to the activation of inflammatory pathways, an increased presence of hippocampal astrocytes and microglia, and elevated expression of neuroinflammatory cytokines. Comparative analysis identified 12 differential metabolites that exhibited changes in both human and mouse serum post-sevoflurane anesthesia. Notably, isatin levels were significantly decreased after anesthesia. Notably, isatin levels significantly decreased after anesthesia, a factor known to stimulate proliferation and proinflammatory gene expression in microglia—the pivotal cell type in inflammatory responses. Conclusion Sevoflurane-induced alterations in serum metabolites in both elderly patients and aging mice, subsequently contributing to increased inflammation in the hippocampus.

In-Situ Sulfur Passivation Enabling High Open-Circuit Voltage in Hydrothermally Sb2S3 Solar Cells

Fucheng Yu,Zehao Wu,Cheng Qian,Zengguang Huang,Yueyi liu,Jinghong Zhang,Sihua Zhong

Antimony sulfide (Sb 2 S 3 ) has emerged as a promising top cell candidate for tandem solar architectures due to its suitable bandgap, environmentally friendly and earth-abundant composition. However, sulfur volatilization during the preparation process always affects the quality of the thin film and the photovoltaic performance. To address this challenge, we developed a simple in-situ passivation approach applied during Sb 2 S 3 hydrothermal deposition via the strategic supplementation of sulfur source in precursor solutions. This methodology effectively boosts minority charge carrier life time during preparation processing, concurrently enhancing crystalline quality and improving power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device. Besides reducing the defect of Sb 2 S 3 absorber, we further systematic optimized the electron transport layer (ETL) architecture by using TiO 2 /CdS bilayer to accelerate the charge transfer rate at the interface of Sb 2 S 3 and ETL and to reduce parasitic light absorption. As an overall result, a PCE of 6.83% with a high open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 811.5 mV has been achieved, which is the highest V oc for Sb 2 S 3 solar cells to date. This study provides a promising sulfur passivation strategy for the Sb 2 S 3 solar cells by hydrothermal method.

In-situ photocatalysis enabled preparation of high-performance flexible inductive electrodes in triboelectric nanogenerators

Dongcheng Wu,Wenjie Yan,Xin Zhang,Jicai Zhang,Ting Liu,Zenghui Qiu,Yangqi Zhang,Xinmiao Liu,Shuwei Zhang,Haijun Xu

The induction electrode plays a critical role in determining triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) performance through electrostatic induction. However, traditional fabrication methods involving metal tape adhesion face inherent limitations: i. The adhesive layer increases induction distance (which is inversely proportional to maximum surface charge density), consequently reducing output; ii. Their susceptibility to inelastic deformation prevents reliable operation under flexible/elastic strain required by wearable devices. To address these challenges, we developed a novel in-situ photocatalytic method for synthesizing silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) electrodes. Achievable even with ambient sunlight, this simple synthesis process can be accelerated to 1 min using high-power illumination. This method eliminates the adhesive layer required by traditional electrodes, enabling exceptional flexibility, stability, and adaptability. Free from expensive instruments, our low-cost method achieves 187 % enhanced output over traditional electrodes, rivaling magnetron-sputtered electrodes. The AgNPs electrode hybridized with minimal silver nanowires (AgNWs) exhibits superior resistance stability compared to the pure AgNWs electrode, using only 2.5 % AgNWs nano-material. Benefiting from the structural merits of AgNPs and their hybrid architecture, the developed electrodes achieve good flexibility and elastic strain performance. These advancements demonstrate the high potential of AgNPs induction electrodes for high-performance TENGs and wearable applications.

Durable adhesion in flexible sensors via synergistic interactions in tannic acid/thiosemicarbazide-chitosan networks

Yu Liu,Jie Chen,Chunyan Hu,Baojiang Liu

Adhesive conductive hydrogels have a broad application prospect in the field of flexible sensors, but existing adhesive hydrogels often struggle to balance adhesion performance and mechanical strength, and their adhesion stability is poor, which limits their long-term applications. In this study, a dual-network-structured hydrogel with durability, conductivity, and adhesion was prepared using a photoinitiated polymerization process, and its potential application in flexible sensors was explored. The hydrogel is based on thiosemicarbazone-modified chitosan (CS-SCM) as the backbone, introducing a reducible group into the system, acrylic acid (AA), tannic acid (TA), and Fe3+ are incorporated, endowing the hydrogel with excellent electrical conductivity and adhesion durability through multiple hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and metal-phenol complexation effects. The experimental results show that the hydrogel is able to maintain stable and long-lasting adhesion on the surface of various substrates, and its adhesion to plank remains above 90 kPa after 5 days of storage and more than 20 kPa after 13 days, which is significantly better than traditional hydrogels. Moreover, the durable adhesion of this hydrogel is highly valuable for research and applications in flexible sensors, smart wearables, and bioelectronic devices.

Engineering spatially proximate redox sites in Pd-In/TiO2 photocatalyst for selective CO2 photoreduction

Mazhar Khan,Zeeshan Akmal,Muhammad Tayyab,Seemal Mansoor,Muhammad Adnan Zeb,Amir Zeeshan,Muhammad Mubashir Khan,Ziwei Ye,Jinlong Zhang,Shiqun Wu,Lingzhi Wang

The synergistic integration of redox reactions in the photocatalyst poses a significant challenge for CO 2 photoreduction. Addressing this issue requires the design of spatially proximate redox sites while effectively suppressing charge recombination at these sites. This work offers a pioneering tactic that exploits synergistic redox reactions in close atomic proximity. The deliberate incorporation of palladium and indium into TiO 2 , where the Pd site assists in hole accumulation, accelerates water dissociation, and generates highly active H* species. Meanwhile, adjacent In sites capture photogenerated electrons from TiO 2 , producing reactive intermediates by activating CO 2 . The synergistic incorporation of Pd and In accelerates redox functionality, boosts charge carrier separation, and mitigates recombination at closely situated redox sites. Comprehensive characterizations, including in-situ XPS and FTIR, strengthen these innovative outcomes. The optimized Pd 0.5 -In 1 /TiO 2 photocatalyst achieves nearly 100 % selectivity of CH 4 with a production rate of 30.5 µmol g -1 h −1 without the use of any sacrificial reagent, demonstrating a 25-fold improvement compared to pristine TiO 2 . In-situ infrared spectroscopy further validates that the synergistic doping of metal ions promotes the formation of *CH 3 O and *CHO, key intermediates in the production of CH 4 . This investigation provides valuable insight into the intricate design of coupled redox active sites.
