A novel sustained-release system was designed on the basis of metal–organic framework-5 (MOF-5) as a nanocontainer to load benzotriazole (BTA). Furthermore, the fabricated BTA/MOF-5 (BTA@MOF-5) was doped to the epoxy coating to improve the anticorrosion performance of copper. UV spectrophotometry proved the sustained-release behavior of BTA@MOF-5. Salt spray tests and electrochemical measurements demonstrated the self-healing ability of the composite coating . This novel sustained-release system provides a new strategy for metal protection.

Biochar reinforced advanced nanocomposites are of interest to a wide circle of researchers. Herein, we describe a novel MOF-derived reinforced cow dung biochar composite, which was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method to form the MOF MIL-125(Ti) onto a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped bio-carbon (NSCDBC). The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum of NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) exhibits an extension of light absorption in the visible region (360–800 nm), indicating its higher visible light capture capacity relative to pure MIL-125(Ti). The photocatalytic activity results show that all the NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) composite samples, namely NSCM-5, NSCM-10, NSCM-20 and NSCM-30 display good performance in the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride compared to pure MIL-125(Ti). Among them, NSCM-20 exhibits the highest catalytic activity with a removal rate of 94.62%, which is attributed to the excellent adsorption ability of NSCDBC and the ability to inhibit the complexation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Photoluminescence verifies that the loading of biochar successfully enhances the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Subsequently, the active species in the photocatalytic process are identified by using electron spin resonance spin-trap techniques and free radical trapping experiments. Finally, the possible reaction mechanism for the photocatalytic process is revealed. These results confirm that NSCDBC/MIL-125(Ti) is a potentially low-cost, green photocatalyst for water quality improvement.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials and their derivatives have been widely used in the area of clean energy. When appropriate MOFs are selected for pyrolysis under suitable conditions, MO/C composites containing metal oxides (MO) and carbon layer can be obtained, and the skeletal structure of MOFs can also be maintained. In this contribution, porous double MOFs composites wrapped by carbon nanotubes (MIL-125/ZIF-8@CNTs) has been synthesized. After pyrolysis, the MIL-125 is transformed into TiO 2 /C, the ZIF-8 is converted into ZnO/C, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were wrapping on the surface of TiO 2 /ZnO/C, and finally formation of porous TiO 2 /ZnO/C@CNTs composites. Multi-walls CNTs could improve the electrical conductivity of the composites and increase the structural stability of the architectures, alleviating the volume expansion of materials during the charging/discharging process. The synthesized porous TiO 2 /ZnO/C@CNTs exhibits high specific capacity (the capacity is 816.8 mAhg −1 at the current density of 100 mAg −1 after 100 cycles) and excellent rate performance. Even at the high current density of 2 A g −1 after 300 cycles, the capacity still could reach up to 800 mA h g −1 .

In the present work, the metal-organic-framework-derived carbon (MDC-800, 800 refers to the carbonization temperature) was successfully synthesized through the hydrothermal method and subsequent carbonization methods, and the material had good adsorption capacity. MDC-800 was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , N 2 adsorption/desorption isotherm, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) analysis, and zeta potential . Batch adsorption was performed, and the relevant adsorption behavior was surveyed. The adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) by MDC-800 reached equilibrium at 6 h, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 493 mg/g. The adsorption of BPA on MDC-800 conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Moreover, thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of BPA by MDC-800 had an exothermic behavior. According to BET analysis, MDC-800 has high specific surface area (710 m 2 /g) and pore volume (4.29 cm 3 /g). The excellent adsorption performance of MDC-800 for BPA is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area and hydrogen bond . The adsorbent was subjected to recycling test. After five cycles, the adsorption capacity reached 90.78% of the initial adsorption capacity, indicating that MDC-800 has a good reusability. This study proved that MDC-800 has broad prospects in BPA removal.

Highly effective extraction of uranium from seawater calls for the development of adsorbents with both high capacity and selectivity. Defective Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates for uranium sequestration due to their high surface area and tunable active sites. In this work, MOF-808 samples with adjustable missing linker defects were successfully prepared by manipulating the concentration of the carboxylic acid modulator. Impressively, MOF-808 with the highest defect density, namely M808-4, showed excellent selectivity towards uranium in comparison with coexisting competitive ions in seawater. Moreover, M808-4 exhibited remarkable uranium extraction performance in real seawater with an uptake capacity of 5.83 mg/g in 28 d, which is 10.41 times higher than that for vanadium. The results indicated that the abundant Zr unsaturated active sites formed by defect inducing strategy are the key to the efficient capture of uranyl ions. This study highlighted the advantages of defect engineering in MOF based materials for highly selective uranium extraction from seawater.

A series of Co 3 O 4 @C-N (N = 1, 2, 3) composite photocatalysts were prepared by simple agitation and pyrolysis for degradation of organic dyes. The hollow macroscopic spherical structure of Co 3 O 4 @C-2 was constructed by adjusting the pyrolysis time. Compared with pure Co 3 O 4 , the carbon composite Co 3 O 4 @C-2 significantly enhanced light absorption in the UV and visible range, improved the electron transport efficiency and prevented the necessary photoexcited electron-hole pair recombination. Hence, the photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue (MB, 20 mg/L) reached 100% in 120 min under UV–vis light irradiation . Under the coupling of Co 3 O 4 and graphitized carbon, Co 3 O 4 @C-2 obtained high structural stability, good reusability and low biotoxicity. Scavenging experiments and ESR test showed that •O 2- radical was the active species for MB removal. After six cycles of tests, the photocatalytic efficiency of Co 3 O 4 @C-2 remained at 90.42%. The macroscopic spherical structure Co 3 O 4 @C-2 effectively avoids the problem of dispersion and recovery of powder catalyst, which also paves a path for the designing of candidate commercial photocatalyst with high efficiency and low consumption.

Well-organized metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon-based materials exhibit ideal electromagnetic (EM) absorption performance. Nevertheless, it is still a challenge to reduce the complex permittivity and obtain high electromagnetism compatibility. Herein, magnetic rod-like carbon composite NiCo/ZnO/C with a metal–semiconductor interface structure was successfully fabricated through the pyrolysis of Ni/Co/ZiF8 MOF precursors. By comparing the EM wave properties of three materials, NiCo/ZnO/C displayed the optimal performance by virtue of the cooperation of complex permittivity dielectric loss and the magnetic loss of the composite. ZnO optimized the EM performance of NiCo/ZnO/C with a minimum reflection loss ( RL ) value (−50.7 dB) at 9.1 GHz and thickness of 2 mm. It is demonstrated that ZnO particles dispersed uniformly in the outer layer, which became a “green channel” to enhance the maximum intake of electron transport. Furthermore, the synergy between ZnO and NiCo generated an effective impedance match, enabling EM waves to easily enter the interior of the composite. The aim of this paper is to design and construct a platform containing dual-metals and oxide carbon-based composites for an efficient EM wave absorber. It has been proved that coating oxide on metallic carbon-based materials is an effective way to synthesize microwave absorbers with enormous potential. Graphical Abstract

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density ( J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3- x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3- x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm −2 J HCOOH at a low potential of − 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm −2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3- x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Fine tailoring the pore structure and sorption capability of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membrane is highly desirable for efficient separation of C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas pair. In this work, a facile approach was proposed to enrich the ultramicroporosity of CMS membrane and enhance the affinity adsorption capacity for C 2 H 4 , in which ZIF-8 nanoparticles were incorporated into a novel precursor polymer of phenolphthalein-based poly (arylene ether ketone) (PEK-C) followed by carbonization to prepare mixed matrix CMS membranes to achieve simultaneously high C 2 H 4 permeability and high C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 selectivity. The ZIF-8-derived nanocomposites partially maintain the pore structure of ZIF-8 precursor, and have good compatibility with the carbon matrix. The BET surface areas, micropore volume and the number of ultramicropore with molecular sieving ability of CMS membrane are greatly improved due to the introduction of ZIF-8-derived microporous carbons, resulting in a significant increase in the C 2 H 4 permeability and C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 diffusion selectivity. The C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 sorption selectivity of CMS membrane is also enhanced owing to the selective adsorption affinity of the ZIF-8-derived Zn 2+ metal oxides for C 2 H 4 . The C 2 H 4 permeability of mixed matrix CMS membrane with 10 wt% ZIF-8 loading is increased by 42% compared to that of neat CMS membrane, and the C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 selectivity is increased by 102%.

Reactive dyes are widely used in textile industry, but their excessive use has caused several water pollution problems. In order to reasonably treat printing and dyeing wastewater, the highly efficient adsorbent for reactive dyes employed in this study is a new type metal–organic framework (MOF) material. Ni/Co MOF (NCM) was synthesized using the solvothermal method; then, the materials were analyzed by a series of characterization methods. This study mainly investigated the adsorption properties of NCM toward reactive dyes, and the adsorption capacities of NCM toward reactive red 218 were up to 200 mg·g–1. The results were found to conform to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model by performing kinetic and isotherm studies on the adsorption process of reactive red 218 on NCM. The results of the intraparticle diffusion model suggest that the binding of reactive red 218 to NCM was mainly divided into three steps: adsorption, diffusion, and saturation. Moreover, it was concluded by thermodynamic fitting of the adsorption process that the adsorption of reactive red 218 by NCM proceeded spontaneously and was accompanied by an endothermic reaction, in which the adsorption of both occurred mainly by electrostatic attraction. The NCM has good reusability and still has good adsorption performance after being reused 5 times. Therefore, NCM is a very promising and excellent adsorbent for the treatment of dye wastewater because of its high efficiency and reusability.

Bacterial infection has been a considerable obstacle for diabetic wound healing. A multifunctional nanoplatform used as nanozyme for bacterial infected diabetic wound is extremely attractive. Therefore, gold nanoclusters modified zirconium-based porphyrin metal–organic frameworks (Au NCs@PCN) were constructed by an in situ growth method. Through SEM, TEM, and EDS mapping, the surface of ellipsoid-shaped particles around 190 nm was observed to be evenly interspersed with 5–8 nm gold nanoclusters. Notably, Au NCs@PCN exhibits excellent performance in exciting ROS generation and photothermal effects. Under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, Au NCs@PCN can be heated to 56.2 °C and produce ROS, showing an effective killing effect on bacteria. Antibacterial studies showed that Au NCs@PCN inhibited MRSA and AmprE. coli by destroying membrane structure and inducing protein leakage up to 95.3% and 90.6%, respectively. Animal experiments showed that Au NCs@PCN treated diabetic rats had reduced wound coverage to 2.7% within 21 days. The immunoblot analysis showed that proangiogenic and proepithelial cell proliferation factors were expressed significantly up-regulated. These results prove that Au NCs@PCN with photocatalytic and nanozyme activity has a broad application prospect for promoting diabetic infected wound healing.

Sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction during the water splitting requires high-performance electrocatalysts with low cost and good stability. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as electrocatalysts owing to their unique properties. To improve their electrocatalytic activity and stability, we report a selenylation method to modulate the morphology and interfaces by forming flower-like MOF-selenide nanocomposites . The optimal sample exhibits high activity with an overpotential of 260 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , much better than commercial RuO 2 and the control samples. Moreover, the optimal sample has the lowest Tafel slope of 54.3 mV dec -1 , indicating the fast reaction kinetics, which can be attributed to the lower charge-transfer resistance and high intrinsic activity. Chronoamperometry shows that the optimal sample can maintain the current density for 60 h at 10 mA cm −2 after the initial surface reconstruction, demonstrating good stability. This study provides a new perspective on the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts based on polymetallic MOFs.
