Optimization of energy storage performance in (La, Mn) co-doped SrTiO3 thin film through grain engineering

Fang He,Dashuang Fu,Yunkai Wu,Xu Wang

Lead-free dielectric capacitors have become a topic of great interest in response to the ever-increasing demand for high-performance and environmentally friend energy devices. As SrTiO 3 (STO) is paraelectrics, the extremely low spontaneous polarization limits the development of its energy storage applications. In this paper, the microstructure and ferroelectric properties of STO are adjusted by grain engineering to expand its application in energy storage. STO, SrTi 1-x Mn x O 3 (STM x , x = 0.01 and 0.04) and Sr 1-y La y TiMn 0.01 O 3 (SL y TM 0.01 , y = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04) thin films are synthesized by the sol-gel method and thoroughly investigated on the effects of A-site (La) and B-site (Mn) co-doping effects on the crystalline phase, morphology, dielectric, ferroelectric and energy storage characteristics of STO thin film. The results indicate that the SL 0.01 TM 0.01 thin film exhibits a breakdown electric field of 3666.2 kV/cm. The SL 0.02 M 0.01 thin film exhibits excellent frequency stability and low dielectric loss (<0.01) with an energy storage density of 29.5 J/cm 3 and an efficiency of 83.7 % at 2600 kV/cm. Moreover, the sample shows good frequency stability (400–2800 Hz) and thermal stability (20−140 °C). These findings indicate the potential of (Mn, La) co-doped SrTiO 3 thin film for dielectric capacitor energy storage field applications.

Oxygen-enriched vacancy spinel Mn-Co oxides by deep thermal reduction for enhanced antibiotics degradation efficiency

Xiai Zhang,Rui Zhou,Ruohong Bi,Tong Wang,Qikui Fan,Hao Zhu,Zhimao Yang,Xiaofei Liu,Chuncai Kong

In this research work, flower-like MnCo 2 O 4.5 was synthesized by introducing a short-chain surfactant as a surface-active agent. This structure was utilized as a precursor, and a gas atmosphere pyrolytic deep reduction strategy was employed to construct a sea urchin-like catalyst (DTR-V o -MCO) with abundant oxygen vacancies. A series of characterizations were conducted to reveal the catalyst's microstructure and crystal phase composition. DTR-V o -MCO achieved more than 90% degradation of OTC within 10 min, and the efficiency was 1.5 times that of V p -MCO. The substantial presence of oxygen defects on the DTR-V o -MCO surface expedited charge transfer processes, resulting in a remarkable enhancement of PMS activation efficiency. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and radical quenching experiments indicated that the contributions of radicals to oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation were in the order of 1 O 2 > SO 4 •– > O 2 •– >  • OH. 1 O 2 and SO 4 •– played dominant roles in OTC degradation. The possible oxytetracycline degradation pathways were proposed based on LC-MS analysis. In summary, this work presents an efficient method for a highly oxygen-deficient catalyst, expanding the application of binary transition metal materials in environmental remediation.

The electro-Fenton/sulfite process with Fe-Mn bimetallic catalyst for diclofenac degradation at neutral pH

Ge Song,Yang Zheng,Minghua Zhou

The application of bimetallic catalysts in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (Hetero-EF) is limited due to its poor performance over a wide pH range. In this work, the Hetero-EF/sulfite process was constructed with FeMn@C as the catalyst to improve the degradation of pollutants under neutral pH. The removal efficiency of diclofenac (DCF) (97.8%) was significantly higher than that of Hetero-EF (15.0%) at pH 7, in which the degradation rate constant k was increased by 19.75 times. The existence and transformation process of various active species ( • OH, SO 4 •- , O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 ) in the process were verified by capture experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test. The possible DCF degradation pathway was also proposed. The introduction of sulfite could reduce Fe 3+ and Mn 3+ , promote the Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Mn(II)/Mn(III) cycles, strengthen the generation of active species, and thus promote the degradation of pollutants. The removal efficiency was still maintained 76.6% after five cycles. The Hetero-EF/sulfite process is a simple, feasible, and efficient method to degrade pollutants, which has a broad application prospect.

The pH Dependence of O3/Mn(II) Synergy for the Reactive Species Evolution and Micropollutant Degradation

Wen-Long Wang,Peng-Hui Liu,Jung-Hyun Son,Hang Su,Min-Yong Lee,Hong-Ying Hu,Qian-Yuan Wu,Uwe Hübner

The combination of ozonation and Mn(II) (O3/Mn(II)) is expected to synergistically eliminate recalcitrant organic micropollutants in water. However, the decay of O3, formation of •OH and reactive manganese species (RMnSs), and synergism in micropollutant degradation have not been comprehensively understood. Herein, the synergism of O3 and Mn(II) was observed to be pH-dependent. Compared to ozonation alone, O3/Mn(II) preferentially formed Mn(V and VI) and slightly increased •OH yield (from 0.22 to 0.30) at acidic pH 4–5, while it preferentially formed Mn(VII) and significantly increased OH yield (from 0.52 to 0.74) at circumneutral pH 6–7. Thereafter, O3/Mn(II) prominently increased RMnS exposure at acidic pH, while it dramatically diminished O3-exposurse to increase •OH exposure at circumneutral pH. As a result, O3/Mn(II) outperformed ozonation alone for the degradation of various O3-resistant micropollutants (3.7–7.9 times faster). For example, the RMnSs (82.7% contribution) and •OH (84.2% contribution) were the dominant contributors to the degradation of the isothiazolinone biocide (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) at acidic and circumneutral pH, respectively. Mn(II) can enhance the removal of O3-resistant micropollutants in relatively clean waters (e.g., tap water), but its effectiveness was limited in more contaminated waters (e.g., WWTP effluent). These findings support the practice and pH optimization of the O3/Mn(II) in various water types.

Synchronous dual additives to boost multiphase interface stability of high-voltage Li-rich Mn-based batteries

Qiangfeng Zhang,Shijie Xu,Haipeng Zhu,Zhao Chen,Libao Chen,Chunxiao Zhang,Weifeng Wei

High-voltage lithium-rich manganese-based oxides (LRMOs) are expected to become next-generation mainstream cathodes due to their higher voltage, higher specific capacity and lower cost. However, currently commercialized carbonate electrolytes still face the challenge of poor decomposition of solvents and lithium salts at high voltage, leading to serious interface side reactions and electrochemical performance degradation. Herein, we propose an interfacial chemical modification strategy based on the dual additives of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphate (TMSPa), to promote Li+ migration and ensure long-term cycling stability of LRMO-based batteries. Detailed characterization reveals that the dual additives FEC-TMSPa can promote the desolvation process of Li+ and reduce the adverse decomposition of electrolyte components by regulating the solvation structure of the electrolyte. Simultaneously, dual additives can facilitate the formation of a robust cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI)/solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) rich-in F/P/Si species, thereby reducing the interface side reactions, inhibiting the erosion of acidic substances on electrodes, and promoting the uniform deposition/stripping of Li+. As a result, the high-voltage LRMO-based batteries exhibit excellent rate performance and cycling stability, with a capacity retention of 82.36% after 500 cycles at 30 °C, and 86.9% after 150 cycles at a high-temperature of 55 °C, suggesting that the proposed strategy of synergistically regulating the interface chemistry with multiple additives is anticipated to facilitate the further application of high-voltage layered cathode materials.

Synthesis of Mn/Cu co-doping mesoporous carbon by template method for gas phase mercury removal

Ruhao Gong,Haihui Chen,Xiuya Rao,Jihong Chi,Ziqi Zhang,Guiling Xu,Dandan Chen,Qiang Zhou,Ping Lu

Mn/Cu co-doping mesoporous carbon sorbent (MnCu x -C) was synthesized via using hard template method. Thymol blue (C 27 H 30 O 5 S) was used as carbon source and MCM-41 was applied as template agent. Copper nitrate trihydrate (Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ·3H 2 O) and manganese acetate tetrahydrate (MnC 4 H 6 O 4 ·4H 2 O) was in-situ co-doped with carbon source as Cu/Mn metals precursor. Mercury removal on the MnCu x -C sorbent was investigated on a fixed bed experimental apparatus. The physical and chemical characteristics of the MnCu x -C sorbent were investigated by using BET, SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS, respectively. Combing with mercury programmed temperature desorption (Hg-TPD) and density functional theory (DFT), the mechanism of mercury adsorption on the MnCu x -C sorbent was revealed. The results showed that the synthesized MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent displayed high mercury removal performance at 150℃, which was considered to be a potential sorbent for mercury removal from industrial flue gas. Mn doping on the mesoporous carbon greatly improved the mercury removal ability of sorbent with mercury capture rate increasing from 6 % to 89 %. Doping of Cu can effectively improve the SO 2 tolerance of the MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent for mercury removal. With different concentration of SO 2 existing in flue gas, the MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent still kept high mercury removal ability. O 2 in flue gas promoted mercury removal on the MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent with main product of HgO. In the presence of SO 2 , a small amount of HgSO 4 formed on the MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent. The DFT analysis further displayed that Hg 0 was mainly chemisorbed on the surface of MnCu 0.1 -C sorbent with formation of HgO.

Preparation of S-Doped Ni-Mn-Fe Layered Hydroxide for High-Performance of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jiefeng Wang,Shilin Li,Yifan Guo,Jiaqi Ding,Zhi Lu

A novel catalyst with a metal sulfide/hydroxide heterostructure was prepared by introducing sulfur ions into NiMnFe layered hydroxide by a simple hydrothermal method, using a series of characterization methods and electrochemical tests to explore the optimal sulfur ion doping amount. The XPS results show that the introduction of sulfur ions leads to a change in metal electron delocalization, which is conducive to the OER procedure. The newly formed metal sulfide can not only improve the conductivity of NiMnFe LDH/NF electrode materials but also enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of the materials. The electrochemical performance indicated that the S2-NiMnFe LDH/NF catalyst required only 205 mV overpotential to provide a current density of 10 mA−2, and the Tafel slope was only 45.79 mV dec−1. In addition, the large turnover frequency value (1.2614 S−1) reflects the excellent intrinsic activity of the novel catalytic material.

Dual-Targeting Mn@CeO2 Nanozyme-Modified Probiotic Hydrogel Microspheres Reshape Gut Homeostasis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Pinwen Zhou,Qi Sun,Longchang Huang,Yufei Xia,Jiaqi Wang,Dongze Mo,Christopher J. Butch,Chenmei Li,Li Zhang,Xuejin Gao,Hui Wei,Xinying Wang

Oral microecological agents show potential in reshaping intestinal microbiota and treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but their clinical application is hindered by gastrointestinal challenges, antioxidant instability, and ineffective targeted delivery. In this study, we proposed a protective modification strategy utilizing a nanozyme coating and an alginate microsphere system to enhance the delivery efficiency, effectiveness, and precision of probiotics. By incorporating Mn into CeO2, Mn@CeO2 nanozyme was synthesized, significantly boosting ROS scavenging activity both in vitro and in vivo at safe dosages. Following the coincubation of Mn@CeO2 with Limosilactobacillus reuteri, the nanozymes were successfully distributed onto the surface of the probiotics. MnCe@LR/AMs were then fabricated using the electrostatic spray method, enhancing their tolerance to the acidic environment of the stomach. Notably, sodium alginate (SA), through electrostatic interactions and binding to mannose receptors highly expressed at inflamed sites, conferred a dual-targeting property to MnCe@LR/AMs. In the treatment of colitis in mice, MnCe@LR/AMs were shown to function through the synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of their components. They also effectively reinforced the intestinal barrier, while improving gut microbial diversity and increasing the relative abundance of probiotics. Furthermore, we demonstrated that MnCe@LR/AMs contribute to the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis by enhancing the absorption of amino acids in the gut and modulating macrophage polarization to regulate the immune response. These findings suggest that MnCe@LR/AMs hold significant promise for developing advanced IBD therapies, offering improved precision and efficacy in probiotic delivery.

Photostriction of ilmenite-type ceramics ATiO3 (A = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni and Mn) under visible light

Xiu Li,Zhanheng Yan,Yanglin Shen,Wanjin Liu,Jun Ding

Oxides with the ABO 3 chemical formula play a crucial role in studying photostriction in inorganic materials. In this study, the photostrictive behavior of ilmenite-type ceramics ATiO 3 (where A = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, and Mn) was investigated under visible light irradiation. Among the ceramics investigated, CoTiO 3 showed the highest photostriction of approximately 0.1 % under 405, 520, and 650 nm light irradiation. The photostrictive response decreased successively in FeTiO 3 , MnTiO 3 , NiTiO 3 , and MgTiO 3 . Temperature and thermal expansion tests revealed that the deformation of the ceramics caused by the photothermal effect accounted for approximately half of their photostriction. Raman and charge transfer analyses indicated that the photostriction of the ceramics depended significantly on their crystal structure. Thus, the ceramics exhibited distinct photostrictive performances. This study highlights the connection between the crystal structure and photostrictive performance of ilmenite-type ceramics, providing valuable insights into the underlying mechanism of photostriction in inorganic materials.

Thao Pham Manh,Dinh Son Le,Ky Nguyen Van,Lan Ngo Thi,Tien Phat Doan,Dinh Thao Vu,Tuan Nguyen Van,Thu Hoa Nguyen Thi,Nguyen Vo Anh Duy,Minh Triet Dang,Nguyen To Van

s The present study demonstrates a successful synthesis of manganese-doped nickel cobalt sulfides (Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 ), which deliver marked improvements in electrochemical properties compared to pristine NiCo 2 S 4 . Comprehensive structural, morphological, compositional, surface, and electronic characterizations provide clear insights into the enhanced performance. Specifically, we identify three primary factors contributing to the superior electrochemical behaviors of Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 : ( i ) the appearance of hollow nanorods, which facilitates electrolyte access and improves ionic transport; ( ii ) the synergistic effects arising from the Faradaic reactions, which play a crucial role in boosting the electrochemical performance of Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 compared to the unmodified NiCo 2 S 4 ; and ( iii ) the enhances electronic conductivity from increased electron density and effective charge redistribution due to Mn doping confirmed by density functional theory simulations and experimental observations, leading to reduced internal resistance and improved electrochemical kinetics. Remarkably, Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 achieves an exceptional specific capacity of 470   C   g -1 at a current density of 1   A   g -1 . Additionally, the Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 //AC asymmetric supercapacitor delivers impressive energy densities ranging from 37.09 to 84.85   Wh   kg -1 , corresponding to power densities decreasing from 7.09 to 0.79   kW   kg -1 ; maintaining 50.52% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 2   mA   cm -2 . These results underscore the potential of Mn-NiCo 2 S 4 and related doped materials as next-generation electrodes for advanced, high-performance supercapacitors, paving the way for significant advancements in energy storage technology.

Multiscale Scrutinizing Ion Storage Kinetics in Hollow Ni-Mn Prussian Blue Analogues for Enhanced Capacitive Deionization

Adekunle Adedapo Obisanya,Liang Ma,Jinkang Liu,Tianshuo Yang,Zhibin Ren,Xinyi Tan,Faming Gao,Jianren Wang

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are a class of promising materials for capacitive deionization. However, the kinetic mismatch between their slow ion storage rate and the demand from short-time desalination severely limits their desalination performance. Here, a group of structure-tuneable Ni-Mn PBAs have been developed by a combination strategy of surface-protected chemical etching and Ostwald ripening to study their ion storage kinetics. Treating them as demos, the characterizations and investigations, e.g., in situ XRD in a three-electrode system, dynamic impedance, finite element simulation, and DFT calculations etc., reveal that the slow ion diffusion caused by the severe agglomeration of the nanoparticles and the unsuitable lattice parameter controls the final desalination behavior. Therefore, the correspondingly optimized sample (HC-t) possessing a microscale hollow structure, nanoscale shell thickness, and expanded lattice, displays a fast ion storage kinetics with the ratio of surface-controlled current as high as 82% at a scan rate of 20 mV s −1 . Consequently, it delivers an impressive desalination capacity of 120.8 mg g −1 (2.06 mmol g −1 Na + ) with a fast average desalination rate of 0.25 mg g −1 s −1 (0.004 mmol g −1 s −1 ) at 1.2 V, competitive with those reported in the literature. Moreover, the elucidation of the structure-performance correlation provides valuable insights for the development and design of next-generation PBAs for capacitive deionization (CDI).

A highly-stable layered Fe/Mn-based cathode with ultralow strain for advanced sodium-ion batteries

Rui Qi,Mihai Chu,Wenguang Zhao,Ziwei Chen,Lei Liao,Shisheng Zheng,Xiping Chen,Lei Xie,Tongchao Liu,Yang Ren,Lei Jin,Khalil Amine,Feng Pan,Yinguo Xiao

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with iron- and manganese-based cathode electrodes have exhibited great promise in the grid-scale energy storage systems , on the basis of the satisfactory theoretical capacity, as well as huge abundance, low price and non-toxicity of raw materials. However, the inferior cycle life of cathode materials originating from their poor structural stability remains a formidable challenge towards practical applications. Here, an efficient strategy of improving the structure durability is demonstrated in iron- and manganese-based cathodes by dual heteroatom doping. The as-obtained P2-type Na 0.65 Li 0.08 Cu 0.08 Fe 0.24 Mn 0.6 O 2 cathode delivers superior cyclability (88.2% capacity retention for 500 cycles at 2C), fabulous rate capability (76% capacity retention at 5C compared to 0.1C), and a useable reversible capacity of around 85 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Through in-depth characterizations, the underlying structure-property relationship is established, revealing that the complete solid-solution reaction during cycling ensures the ultralow volume variation (as small as 0.7%) and excellent electrochemical performance. These results highlight the significance of fabricating a stable host for the design and development of advanced SIBs with long life.
