Long-life and high-capacity aqueous proton battery based on dipyridophenazine||MnO2 electrodes

Zhao Yang,Xiaodi Cheng,Ronghui Jiang,Jingyue Shang,Jing Liu,Jing Shi,Qiuquan Guo,Jun Luo,Jun Yang

Aqueous proton batteries (APBs) have emerged as promising energy storage devices owing to the small ionic radius and low atomic mass of the proton. In this work, we develop a H + /Mn 2+ dual-cation aqueous proton battery (DC-APB) featuring an MnO 2 -based cathode and a dipyridophenazine (DPPZ)-based anode. To address the limitations of organic small-molecule electrode materials, a DPPZ/CNTs–OH composite is fabricated via a dissolution–reprecipitation method. The hydroxyl groups on CNTs–OH interact with the nitrogen sites of DPPZ through hydrogen bonding and π–π conjugation, which enhances interfacial electronic coupling and structural stability. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that the DPPZ/CNTs–OH electrode exhibits superior rate capability and cycling stability. This work presents an effective modification strategy for organic electrode materials and demonstrates that the environmentally friendly, low-cost DC-APB represents a viable alternative for sustainable green energy storage applications.

Substituent-controlled phenoxy radicals drive cross-coupling transformation of tetracycline on δ-MnO2

Yue Wang,Jingyi Lin,Yonghuan Zhao,Weiguang Lv,Bo Liang,Peihua Li,Kaisheng Zhang,Xing-jiu Huang

Tetracycline (TC) is widely detected in natural waters, yet its transformation under environmentally relevant oxidative conditions remains poorly understood, because most previous studies have focused on engineered oxidation systems employing strong oxidants or external energy input. Here we show that humic-like phenolic moieties can act as active mediators to redirect δ-MnO 2 -driven TC transformation from slow direct oxidation to a phenoxy-radical-mediated coupling pathway. Screening of 18 humic-acid model compounds identified acetosyringone (AS) and syringaldehyde (SyrA) as the most effective co-reactants, increasing the apparent rate constants ( k obs ) of TC by about 8.5- and 5.9-fold, respectively. Analyses indicate that TC transformation is governed by syringyl-type phenoxy radicals generated via surface-mediated one-electron transfer on δ-MnO 2 , with reactivity controlled by the fraction of deprotonated phenolic precursors (ArO − ) over a near-neutral pH range. The structure-activity analysis further revealed that ortho‑methoxy and para-carbonyl functionalities favor radical stability and cross-reactivity, whereas para-carboxyl substitution biases the mediator toward self-coupling and unproductive oxidant consumption. These substituent-dependent trends provide molecular-level insight into how humic-like phenolics regulate TC transformation at Mn oxide interfaces.

S-modified hollow nanosheet MnO2/Ni(OH)2 for efficient urea oxidation electrocatalysis

Jinling Wu,Runmiao Chen,Pengjing Yin,Yuanzhen Zhou,Jieli Tang,Chengbin Du,Qi Xue

S-modified MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 hollow nanosheets were constructed for enhanced UOR. • Requires 1.30 V at 10 mA cm −2 and remains stable for 48 h. • MnO 2 phase transformation promotes the generation of Ni 3+ active species. • S-modification enhances urea adsorption while suppressing competitive OH − adsorption. The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) provides an alternative anodic process for electrochemical hydrogen generation, but developing catalysts with high activity and sustained performance remains challenging. In this study, we report an S-modified nickel-based catalyst with a hollow nanosheet architecture (α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S), demonstrating enhanced UOR performance in alkaline media. α/γ-MnO 2 /Ni(OH) 2 -S attains a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a potential of 1.30 V and maintains reliable durability for 48 h without significant degradation. The improved activity and durability are associated with the hollow nanosheet structure, the phase transformation of MnO 2 , and S-modification, which facilitate mass transport and charge transfer, modulate the electronic structure of Ni(OH) 2 to promote the formation of Ni 3+ active species, and enhance the electrochemical response to urea at different concentrations. This research establishes a practical avenue for constructing advanced nickel-based UOR catalysts through rational structural optimization, phase regulation, and surface modification. Magnetic-dielectric synergy in CoFe2O4-decorated MnO2 nanowires for efficient electromagnetic wave absorption

Fangyu Gan,Xiaochang Yu,Qingrong Yao,Zihao Chen,Kai Wang,Yuncong Zhang,Lingxiao Zhang,Lichun Cheng,Jiayi Gan,Weichao Huang,Yu Zhou,Jianqiu Deng

Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) has attracted considerable interest in electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption owing to its high dielectric loss capability and morphological diversity. However, its practical application is largely restricted by poor impedance mismatch and a single loss mechanism. In this work, a series of CoFe 2 O 4 /MnO 2 composites were constructed via a two-step hydrothermal method, wherein MnO 2 nanowires served as the dielectric scaffold and CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles were introduced as magnetic modifiers to modulate the electromagnetic parameters and optimize impedance matching. The optimized composite achieves a minimum reflection loss of −50.87 dB at a thickness of 2.5 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 6.41 GHz. The enhanced absorption performance is primarily attributed to the strong conduction loss derived from the three-dimensional MnO 2 conductive network, the interfacial polarization induced by the abundant CoFe 2 O 4 /MnO 2 heterojunctions, and the dipolar polarization contributed by oxygen vacancies. This work demonstrates that rational incorporation of magnetic components into a MnO 2 matrix provides a promising strategy for the design and development of high-performance EMW absorbers.

Huong Thu Duong,Tai Duc Luong,Duy Tho Pham,Khanh Van Tran,Bien Quang Nguyen,Subramanian Nithiananth,Duc Dung Mai,Vaiyapuri Soundharrajan,Duong Tung Pham,Hien Xuan Vu

A sulfur-doped β-MnO 2 /S, with a ratio of 9: 1, prepared by simple calcination, is applied as a cathode in aqueous Zn-ion pouch cells. Sulfur doping enhances Zn 2+ transport and stabilizes interfacial reactions, enabling durable performance: 111.25 mAh·g −1 after 500 cycles at 1C (1.9 V cutoff) and 158 mAh·g −1 after 250 cycles at 1.3C. GITT and in-situ EIS indicate faster ion transport and lower charge-transfer barriers, while micro-CT reveals uniform Zn deposition and suppressed dendrite formation. This scalable route improves conductivity, kinetics, and interfacial stability, positioning β-MnO 2 /S (9: 1) as a practical cathode for safe, high-performance Zn-ion pouch batteries.

Orchestrating enhanced starvation and ROS storm therapy with MnO2 nanozyme-driven cascade nanoreactors

Jiahui Cai,Zutong Cui,Wenming Liang,Jianming Sun,Zihan Zhang,Feifei Sun,Feng Yang,Zhiwei Liu,Liming Gao,Jidong Wang,Jian Li

The therapeutic efficacy of glucose oxidase (GOx)-mediated starvation therapy and β-Lapachone (LPC)-induced oxidative stress is significantly constrained by tumor hypoxia and elevated antioxidant defenses in the tumor microenvironment. To address these limitations, a multifunctional nanoplatform, LPC/GOx@ZIF-8@MnO 2 , was developed through the integration of LPC and GOx within a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) carrier followed by surface modification with manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ), and its antitumor efficacy and mechanistic basis were systematically evaluated using HeLa cells in vitro and U14 tumor-bearing mouse models in vivo . Comprehensive in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated significant tumor growth inhibition with excellent biosafety, while mechanistic investigations revealed that this nanocomposite achieves synergistic antitumor effects through four coordinated mechanisms: MnO 2 -catalyzed conversion of endogenous hydrogen peroxide to oxygen alleviates hypoxia while sustaining GOx-mediated glucose depletion; a self-amplifying cascade reaction enhances LPC-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation; photothermally activated upregulation of NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) via the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70)/NQO1 axis enhances LPC efficacy; and depletion of glutathione disrupts cellular antioxidant defenses. Furthermore, it was also revealed that LPC/GOx@ZIF-8@MnO 2 acts on caspase-3, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) to coordinate apoptosis induction and metastasis suppression, with molecular docking further clarifying the key binding sites of LPC with these three targets. Collectively, this work presents an innovative strategy to overcome therapeutic limitations imposed by tumor hypoxia, provides molecular-level insights into multimodal synergistic therapy, and offers new ideas for precision tumor therapy.

A MnO2-based tumor-seeking nanoplatform for enhanced chemoimmunotherapy against 4T1 breast cancer

Tingting Gong,Xiaohuan Wang,Ziqi Liu,Pengxin Li,Yunqian Lu,Yaoyao Guo,Meihua Han,Xiangtao Wang

A significant obstacle in oncological therapy lies in surmounting the immunosuppressive microenvironment while enhancing the anti-tumor efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents. STING agonists such as Mn 2+ have demonstrated substantial promise in this regard. Squamocin (Squ), a naturally derived compound, exhibits potent anti-tumor activity with minimal drug resistance; however, its application is hampered by poor water solubility (approximately 7.5 μg/mL) and off-target toxicity. In this study, a chemo-immunotherapy approach utilizing MnO 2 nanoparticles combined with squamocin (Squ) has been formulated, with its therapeutic effectiveness further augmented through surface modification with the tumor-targeting IR820 molecule. The intravenously injectable MnO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized from KMnO 4 and anhydrous ethanol, and subsequently modified with Astragalus polysaccharides (APS)-IR820 on their surface to improve stability in physiological media and facilitate tumor targeting and in vivo fluorescence imaging. The resultant MnO 2 @APS-IR820 NPs, measuring 193.4 ± 1.7 nm, generated Mn 2+ in response to the elevated glutathione (GSH) levels within the tumor microenvironment. The generated Mn 2+ notably induced maturation of bone marrow dendritic cells (BMDCs) and promoted the repolarization of tumor-associated macrophages from the pro-tumor M2 phenotype to the anti-tumor M1 phenotype. When combined with Squ@APS-IR820 NPs (220.1 ± 11.2 nm in size), the chemoimmunotherapy significantly stimulated both innate and adaptive immune responses in a 4T1 tumor bearing mouse model and demonstrated a synergistic anti-tumor effect, achieving a tumor inhibition rate of approximately 92%, highlighting its remarkable potential for anti-tumor therapy.

ICG/MnO2-HFn-mPEG-DSPE-Lip enhances the anticancer activity of ICG phototherapy

Ma Dan,Lu Huixiang,Zhang Hai,Liao Anru,Peng Qianrong,Yang Min

Hypoxia poses a significant challenge to the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer treatment. This study aims to design and synthesize PEGylated liposomes encapsulating MnO₂, indocyanine green (ICG), and H-chain ferritin (HFn) to potentially address hypoxia and enhance the therapeutic outcomes of PDT. PEGylated liposomes (ICG/MnO₂-HFn-mPEG-DSPE-Lip) were constructed with a rod-like structure, incorporating MnO₂ as a hypoxia-modulating agent and ICG as a photosensitizer. The drug loading capacity, stability and safety of liposomes were characterized. Singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ Δ ) was measured under simulated tumor microenvironment conditions. In vitro phototoxicity was evaluated using A549 human lung adenocarcinoma cells. Liposomes have a high drug loading capacity, good biocompatibility and good long-term stability. Under tumor-simulated conditions, Φ Δ was significantly improved, increasing from 0.210 for free ICG to 0.507. The liposomes demonstrated remarkable phototoxic effects on A549 cells (90.5% cell death under combined PDT/PTT vs. 15% for free ICG). This nanoplatform proposes a novel strategy to overcome hypoxia-induced PDT resistance, and the enhanced efficacy may be attributed to the increased oxygen supply mediated by MnO 2 carried by HFn. These findings provide important insights for the development of next-generation therapeutic systems targeting tumor hypoxia.

Flexible and weavable secondary Zn-MnO2 batteries derived from cellulose of Juncus effusus

Yuefei Zou,Wanlin Wu,Tian Xia,Jiangqi Zhao,Qunhao Wang,Wei Zhang,Canhui Lu

To keep pace with the fast development of portable and wearable electronics, considerable public and scientific attentions have been paid to the flexible energy storage devices with characteristics of light weight, low cost and high electrochemical performance. In this work, we demonstrate a feasible strategy to fabricate novel strand-shaped electrodes from the biomass of Juncus effusus (JE), which can be easily integrated into flexible and rechargeable Zn-MnO 2 batteries with high electrochemical performance. Notably, JE has a very unique three dimensional (3D) triangular-like hollow network microstructure, which greatly favors active material loading, charge transfer and ion diffusion. The obtained aqueous battery presents an excellent specific capacity of 325 mAh g −1 at the current density of 0.3 A g −1 , as well as stunning cycling stability for up to 4000 cycles with 127.53 % retention of the initial capacity. Remarkably, when assembled with a gel electrolyte, the quasi-solid-state battery can work normally under various extreme conditions, including bending, hammering, burning, soaking and puncturing. In addition, due to the high flexibility, the electrodes can be woven in parallel into a textile to form an energy supply unit and successfully power an electronic watch, demonstrating high potential of JE in the fabrication of flexible energy storage devices.

Designing a MnF2/MnO2 heterostructure for enhanced electrocatalysis in the oxygen reduction reaction

Fang Liu,Yang Liu,Dazhi Gao,Shaokai Ma,Shiqing Zhang,Ying Li,Jun Zhang,Yanming Xue,Chengchun Tang

Studying noble-metal-free oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for advancing fuel cells. Manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) has garnered widespread attention due to its convenient synthesis, low cost, high electrochemical activity, and diverse structures. However, it still faces challenges, such as poor conductivity and relatively lower inherent catalytic activity. In this study, a novel ORR electrocatalyst is introduced by constructing a heterostructure of manganese fluoride (MnF 2 ) and MnO 2 , referred to as MnF 2 /MnO 2 . In a 0.1 M KOH solution, the ORR half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of MnF 2 /MnO 2 is measured at 0.804 V, surpassing that of the original MnO 2 catalyst (0.69 V). Compared to the MnO 2 electrocatalyst, the MnF 2 /MnO 2 heterostructure exhibits faster ORR reaction kinetics and a larger electrochemically active surface area. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the MnF 2 /MnO 2 heterostructure possesses enhanced intrinsic conductivity, facilitating the rapid transfer of ions of and electrons. Therefore, this study provides a promising pathway for enhancing the ORR catalytic activity of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts through rational heterostructure design.

Enhanced removal of elemental mercury using MnO2-modified molecular sieve under microwave irradiation

Runlong Hao,Zhen Qian,Xiaojie Yang,Mengchao Luo,Xiaohe Feng,Wanting Qiao,Yi Zhao,Bo Yuan

Developing efficient catalysis-adsorption method for elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) removal with wide temperature window and good sulfur/water resistance is a hot topic. In this study, a novel method of microwave (MW) catalysis of MnO 2 modified molecular sieve (Mn@MOS) composite for Hg 0 removal was developed. Results indicated that Hg 0 removal efficiency of MOS was poor, only 18% at 150 °C, while the efficiency was significantly increased to 97.8% when MW/Mn@MOS was used. Compared with thermo-catalysis way, MW irradiation method achieved better Hg 0 removal efficiency (97.8% vs 86.4%) under a wider temperature window (150–450 °C), and sulfur/water resistance were greatly strengthened under MW irradiation. The dynamical adsorption capacity of Hg 0 was calculated as 1.52 mg/g when the efficiency was below 80%. Kinetic analysis indicated that MW field significantly increased the rate constant and reduced the activation energy. The fate of Hg 0 was unfolded: almost 96% of Hg 0 was chemisorbed as HgO, less than 4% was converted to gaseous Hg 2+ . The mechanism was speculated as followed: (i) excited active site of *MnO 2 was first generated under MW irradiation; (ii) then the oxidizing species including Mn(IV)/Mn(III), O ads , O latt and O* dominated the Hg 0 removal process; (iii) the reactive oxygen species of O ads , O latt and O* were replenished by the interaction between oxygen vacancies and free O 2 . This study first demonstrates the superiority of MW catalysis towards Hg 0 removal, and provides a new thought on the development of the novel Hg 0 removal technologies .

Cu-Doped MnO2 Catalysts for Effective Fruit Preservation via Ozone Synergistic Catalytic Oxidation

Jianguo Huang,Rashid Khan,Chunhui Zhai,Xianting Ding,Li-Sha Zhang,Jin-Ming Wu,Zhizhen Ye

Developing and implementing technologies that can significantly reduce food loss during storage and transport are of paramount importance. Ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation (OSCO) technology has been developed, which sterilizes bacteria and viruses on the surface of food and degrades ethylene released during fruit storage through the active oxygen produced by the catalytic decomposition of ozone. Herein, we report the hydrothermal synthesis of MnO2with distinct phase compositions and nanostructures through simply varying the reaction temperatures. Optimized copper-doped α-MnO2nanorods exhibited remarkable efficacy in activating ozone at a concentration of 40 ppb, and this activation resulted in the complete eradication of indicator bacteria on food surfaces within a 24 h period. Moreover, these nanorods demonstrated high effectiveness in decomposing more than 80% of the ethylene molecules emitted by apples and bananas during the preservation period. The high concentration of surface oxygen vacancies is believed to contribute to the enhanced catalytic activity of the Cu-doped α-MnO2catalyst in the OSCO procedure by reducing ethylene production and maintaining the fruit quality during the preservation period.
