Dual-modulation of phase and electronic structure in hierarchical Ni3Fe/Ni3FeN catalyst by Mo-doping to achieve efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Zhiyu Shao,Jing Sun,Zhen Yan,Keke Huang,Fuli Tian,Hui Xue,Qin Wang

Among the groups of excellent electrode materials reported, Ni-Fe based catalyst is a topic of significant current interest for electrochemical water splitting. Furthermore, hierarchical structures are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis in various catalytic processes. A novel hybrid of Mo-doped Ni 3 Fe/Ni 3 FeN nanocatalyst was designed by using a facile method in this study. The Mo-Ni 3 Fe/Ni 3 FeN catalyst exhibits an outstanding catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction, as indicated by an ultralow overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 47 mV·dec −1 . This study provides an idea for the development of new eletrocatalysts with more electron transfer channels and higher electrocatalytic performance.

Mono-, Bi-, and Tri-Metallic DES Are Prepared from Nb, Zr, and Mo for n-Butane Selective Oxidation via VPO Catalyst

Muhammad Faizan,Kifayat Ullah Khan Niazi,Hasnain Nawaz,Niaz Muhammad,Hao Li,Fei Dai,Ruirui Zhang,Ruixia Liu,Suojiang Zhang

In recent work, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as ionic liquid analogues have been abundantly used in catalysis. Herein, vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalysts were synthesized from mono-, bi-, and tri- metallic DES of Nb, Zr, and Mo metal dopants as structure-directing agents and electronic promoters for n-butane selective oxidation towards maleic anhydride. Higher MA selectivity and larger n-butane conversion was successfully obtained using the newly developed catalysts, while oxidation by-product COx(CO, CO2) was minimized. Characterization techniques including FTIR, DSC, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDS, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, XPS, and NH3-TPD were employed to fully characterize the DESs, precursors and catalysts. This work led to an increase of 7.8% in MA mass yield with 16% more n-butane conversion as compared to an unpromoted VPO catalyst. Moreover, the utilization of a low-carbon alkane brought in a green impact on the chemical plant as well as the environment. Keywords:deep eutectic solvent;vanadium phosphorus oxide;n-butane selective oxidation;structure directing agent;electronic promoter

The hydrophilic treatment of a novel co-catalyst for greatly improving the solar water splitting performance over Mo-doped bismuth vanadate

Xingsheng Hu,Qizhao Wang,Yan Li,Yan Meng,Lei Wang,Houde She,Jingwei Huang

In this work, Molybdenum (Mo) doped bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is carried out by traditional calcination method, while carbon-based cobalt (Co-Ci) is prepared by photoelectric deposition (PED) and used as co-catalyst to decorate the surface, its photocurrent density reached 3.15 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs RHE. More importantly, the H-Co-Ci/Mo: BiVO 4 photoanode obtained by plasma etching of Co-Ci/Mo: BiVO 4 has greatly improved surface hydrophilicity. The photocurrent density of H-Co-Ci/Mo: BiVO 4 photoanode is 4.8 times that of BiVO 4 photoanode, reaching 3.95 mA/cm 2 . In addition, the incident photon-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) value of the H-Co-Ci/Mo: BiVO 4 photoanode is as high as 60%, and both the injection and separation efficiency have also been enhanced. The enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance is attributed to the good wettability of the material surface and improvement of water oxidation kinetics. These findings provide a mild and efficient modification method for improving BiVO 4 used for water splitting, and are expected to provide new ideas for other photoanodes.

Changzhi Yin,Ying Tang,Junqi Chen,Feihu Li,Yijun Huang,Chunchun Li,Xianran Xing,Liang Fang

Two melilite ceramics Sr 2 AGe 2 O 7 (A = Mg, Zn) with low permittivity were prepared by a solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure and microstructure of the ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , Raman spectroscopy , and scanning electron microscopy. Both ceramics crystallized in a single melilite structure with a tetragonal space group P-42 m (113) and exhibited homogeneous microstructures. Optimum microwave dielectric properties with relative permittivity ( ε r ) of 8.56, quality factor ( Q × f ) of 28,800 GHz, and temperature coefficient of resonance frequency ( τ f ) of −70.5 ppm/°C were obtained in Sr 2 MgGe 2 O 7 sintered at 1330 °C. Sr 2 ZnGe 2 O 7 possessed ε r of 8.81, Q × f of 35,700 GHz, and τ f of −84.4 ppm/°C when sintered at 1290 °C. Thermal stability of resonance frequency was accessible when the negative τ f values of Sr 2 AGe 2 O 7 were adjusted after the formation of composite ceramics with CaTiO 3 .

High performance of Mo-promoted Ir/SiO2 catalysts combined with HZSM-5 toward the conversion of cellulose to C5/C6 alkanes

Lele Jin,Wenzhi Li,Qiying Liu,Longlong Ma,Chao Hu,Ajibola T. Ogunbiyi,Mingwei Wu,Qi Zhang

In this study, the Mo-promoted Ir/SiO 2 (Ir-MoO x /SiO 2 ) catalysts combined with the zeolite HZSM-5 were used for the direct conversion of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) to liquid fuel (C 5 /C 6 alkanes) in n-dodecane/H 2 O system. A synergistic effect was formed between the partially reduced MoO x species and the Ir particles, which effectively promoted the catalytic activity of Ir/SiO 2 catalyst. When the Mo/Ir molar ratio was 0.5, a high yield of C 5 /C 6 alkanes (91.7%) was achieved at 210 ℃ for 12 h. In addition, the main component of C 5 /C 6 alkanes was n-hexane, which was proven to be obtained by the hydrogenolysis of the key intermediate, sorbitol, formed from the hydrolysis and hydrogenation of MCC.

Mo/Mo2C encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers as efficiently integrated heterojunction electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in wide pH range

Meixuan Li,Huiyuan Wang,Yun Zhu,Di Tian,Ce Wang,Xiaofeng Lu

It is extremely necessary to develop high-performance noble-metal-free hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts applied over the whole pH values to replace expensive Pt-based catalysts. Herein, a typical metal-semiconductor heterostructure with metallic Mo and Mo 2 C nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) is fabricated via the pyrolysis of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/cellulose acetate (CA)/bis(acetylacetonato)dioxomolybdenum (MoO 2 (acac) 2 ) nanofibers . The unique porous and channel-rich structure of Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs can be manipulated by varying the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate , leading to the exposure of abundant active centers and the acceleration of rapid mass transport. In addition, the synergetic effect among metal and semiconductor as well as the excellent conductivity of the N-CNFs result in excellent HER activity and stability over a wide pH range. To achieve the current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , the optimized Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs exhibit overpotentials of 175, 162 and 294 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M KOH and 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively. This work provides a feasible approach to synthesize high-performance and economical hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at all pH values for renewable energy-related applications.

A novel Sb-doped Mo(O,S)3 oxy-sulfide photocatalyst for degradation of methylene blue dye under visible light irradiation

Worku Lakew Kebede,Dong-Hau Kuo,Misganaw Alemu Zeleke,Kedir Ebrahim Ahmed

Environmentally toxic methylene blue organic pollutants are of more concerns due to their antagonistic effects on human health, animals, and plants, thus needs serious attention for their removal. For elimination purpose, the Sb-doped Mo(O,S) 3 oxy-sulfide nanoplate catalyst with different Sb contents was synthesized at low temperature of 95 °C via a facile method. The structural, morphological, chemical composition, optical properties , and electrical conductivity of the catalyst were characterized with different techniques. The photocatalytic performance of Sb-Mo(O,S) 3  at various Sb contents was investigated for the degradation of methylene blue dye under visible light irradiation using hydrogen peroxide as an effective electron scavenger to further accelerate the reaction. It was observed that the incorporation of Sb enhanced the catalytic activity. Sb-Mo(O,S) 3 -10 was the most efficient catalyst with excellent activity to degrade 99.7% of the dye within 60 min irradiation time. The degradation kinetics follows a pseudo-first-order reaction with a rate constant 8.78 × 10 −2 min −1 , which is 3-fold higher than that for Sb- Mo(O,S) 3 -0 catalyst. Sb-Mo(O,S) 3 -10 showed slower recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and lower charge transfer resistance which proved to be capable for the removal of toxic methylene blue organic pollutant.

Design of a versatile platform on nanostructured Ti-Mo-Zr alloy surface with photothermal, antibacterial and osteoinductive properties for biomedical application

Bianyun Cai,Mintao Xue,Delin Yuan,Xueke Zhou,Yizhou Huang,Zhijun Guo

Bacterial infection and inadequate osseointegration represent significant challenges in the application of titanium (Ti)-based bone implants. Surface modification presents a promising strategy to address these obstacles. Taking advantage of silver ions, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNs) and polydopamine (PDA), this study developed a versatile platform on the surface of Ti-12Mo-10Zr (TMZ) alloy through a multiple surface modification process, including the anodic oxidation treatment of TMZ alloy, the preparation and addition of silver-loaded BPNs (BPNs/Ag), and the coating with PDA. Our results demonstrated that silver enhanced the stability of BPNs/Ag, which were successfully loaded to the nanostructure of oxidized TMZ surface. PDA coating conferred a pH-responsive property to the surface, prolonged the release of silver ions, and improved the photothermal performance. In acidic conditions that mimic bone defect microenvironment, the platform exhibited good photothermal performance, accelerated Ag + release, enhanced antibacterial efficacy, and increased osteoinductivity. Taken together, due to its advantageous characteristics, the versatile platform provides a valuable solution to improve the surface performance of TMZ alloys.

Modulation of oxygen vacancies in NiFe layered double hydroxides through dual-doping with Mo/Cr cations for efficient seawater hydrogen production

Yan Zheng,Jinshu Lu,Xuan Wang,Tianbo Jia,Jinyi Cai,Dingkai Zhou,Yuexin Qian,Yamin Fu,Chunyang Zhai,Hengcong Tao,Yingtang Zhou,Shunli Li

Seawater splitting to produce hydrogen holds promise for renewable energy but faces challenges from chloride ions, causing electrode corrosion and competition between chlorine oxidation reaction (ClOR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, it is crucial to develop highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for seawater splitting. Here, we employ a dual-doping strategy of Mo/Cr cations and a sulfuration approach to fabricate the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF bifunctional catalyst with a 3D nano-flower structure. The S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, achieving current densities of 10 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 116 and 141 mV, respectively. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the S-MoCr-NiFe@NF catalyst exhibited remarkable performance in alkaline overall seawater splitting, requiring only 1.48 and 1.57 V to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH + 0.5 M NaCl and 1.0 M KOH + Seawater, respectively. The in-situ Raman and DFT calculations confirm Ni as the primary active sites, reducing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step and enhancing OER performance. This study will offer a viable approach to developing and creating highly effective bifunctional catalysts for seawater splitting.

Enhanced coke resistance of Ca- and Mg-incorporated Mo/V montmorillonite-supported catalysts during gas-phase glycerol conversion to allyl alcohol

Dajian Li,Alfin Kurniawan,Tania Roy,Jin Wang,Cheng lan Liu,Ze Zhen Wang,Rong Zhen Mu,Chun Hui Zhou

The efficient production of allyl alcohol from glycerol is of great importance due to its significance as a valuable intermediate in chemical industries. While catalytic conversion of glycerol to allyl alcohol by solid acid catalysts, carbon deposition (coking) is prone to occur on the catalyst surface, leading to slow down the conversion process and fast deactivation of the catalyst. In this study, we obtained an efficient catalyst for the preparation of allyl alcohol from gas-phase glycerol by controlling the pore structure and surface acidity of the catalyst. The characterization results showed that hydrochloric acid and citric acid removed the silicon and aluminium elements from montmorillonite, and the acidity, pore volume, and surface area ratio of Na-MMT (SBET=34.5 m2 g-1, VT=0.19 cm3 g-1) of the porous montmorillonite(HA1MMT) catalyst were all improved (SBET=97.9 m2 g-1, VT=0.28 cm3 g-1); After adding MoOx and VOx, the selectivity of Mo/V-HA1MMT catalyst for allyl alcohol was improved. The XPS characterization results indicate that the synergistic effect of Mo and V can promote the transfer of electrons during the reaction process of glycerol conversion. Within 480 minutes of catalyzing glycerol dehydration reaction, Mo0.6V0.4(5)-HA1MMT was almost deactivated (Conv.= 19.5%, Sel.allyl alcohol=31.2%) due to carbon deposition. When the catalyst was doped with calcium and magnesium components, a new active phase CaMo4 was discovered on the catalyst, and the acidity of Ca0.5Mg0.5-Cat. (Cat. is Mo0.6V0.4(5)-HA1MMT) decreased to 214.0 μmol g-1. The coking resistance performance of Ca0.5Mg0.5-Cat. was improved, and after 660 minutes of reaction, the catalyst was deactivated (Conv.= 32.1%, Sel.allyl alcohol=30.1%) due to carbon deposition. During the 3rd catalyst regeneration test, Ca0.5Mg0.5-Cat. still maintained high activity (Conv.= 63.3%, Sel.allyl alcohol=35.2%, Sel.acrolein=31.2%). The results of this study indicate that suitable pore structure and acidity are crucial for designing a catalyst with coking resistance properties.

Synthesis of bimetallic compounds derived from Polyvinylpyrrolidone modified-FeMo2S3 and ZnMo2S3 Mo-clusters and their antibacterial application against water-borne microorganisms

Shi Xue-Chao,Wang Yi-Mei,Hou Shu-Xian,Yang Guo-Qiang,Liu Xin-Xin,Ge Jun,Gui Lin,Zhang Wei-Wei,Kaoutar Chaldi,Li Shu-Jie,Wang Jun,Ge Fei

Waterborne microbial contamination represents a significant global environmental challenge. Microorganisms can induce water pollution, precipitating infectious disease outbreaks and posing a substantial threat to human health. Currently, the excessive use of conventional antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of bacterial resistance, posing a challenge to the design and development of antimicrobial agents with high antibacterial efficacy in diverse water such as rivers, lakes, and wastewater from microbiology laboratories. Bimetallic nanomaterials, that amalgamate the distinctive characteristics of diverse metals, are garnering attention due to their synergistic properties. In this study, PVP-FeMo 2 S 3 (PVP: Polyvinylpyrrolidone) and PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals were synthesized by a high-temperature reaction. The prepared nanocrystals exhibited excellent biocompatibility, regular morphology, long-term stability, and remarkable antibacterial effects. The bacterial biofilms could be eradicated by the combination of photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic synergistic effects of PVP-FeMo 2 S 3 and PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals. PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals exhibited enhanced PTT conversion efficiency for water treatment. Remarkably, even after 20 cycles of recycling, PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 retained substantial antibacterial efficacy. The excellent biosafety of PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 further guarantees the safety of water quality post-treatment. Thus, PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 bimetallic nanocrystals can serve as a novel antimicrobial agent for the treatment of microbial contamination in water. This study offers a potential strategy to mitigate secondary water pollution and prevent the development of drug resistance among pathogenic microorganisms.

Structural design and electronic regulation of atomically dispersed Mo-S4 sites by second shell N species reconfiguration for intensifying hydrogen spillover

Guangxun Sun,Shihuan Liu,Hongfu Shi,Peng Xue,Junxi Li,Wenwen Gao,Feiyang Li,Fuliang Chen,Yanpeng Fu,Zhi Liu,Yuan Pan,Yunqi Liu

Intensifying hydrogen spillover by regulating the atomic local structures catalysts is crucial for improving the hydrogenation performance, but still hugely challenging. Herein, we report a robust single-atom catalyst featuring Mo-S 4 sites in the first shell modulated with N atoms in the second shell (Mo-S 4 -N/C) by an efficient cyclodextrin supramolecular self-assembly pyrolysis strategy for intensifying hydrogen spillover in slurry-phase hydrocracking of vacuum residue (VR). We discovered that the H 2 is activated at the single-atom Mo-S 4 sites efficiently and the spillover of active hydrogen is accelerated by the reconfiguration of N species in the second shell. Remarkably, the Mo-S 4 -N/C catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic hydrogenation activity with high turnover frequency calculated for total metals up to 0.46 s −1 , the VR per pass conversion of 61 wt.%, liquid product yield of 94 wt.%, and the low coke content of 0.6 wt.%, along with good stability, respectively. Theoretical calculations revealed that the N species in the second shell regulated the electronic structure of Mo-S 4 sites, promoting the migration of active hydrogen species by reducing the transfer energy barrier of hydrogen spillover, thus enhancing the hydrogenation performance. This work proposed a strengthened hydrogen spillover mechanism from the atomic scale for hydrogenation reaction, offering novel concepts for designing and developing high-performance hydrogenation catalysts.
