Effects of the Mn/Ni ratio on the battery performance of layered Na-Ni-Mn oxide cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries

Xiao Qingmei,Guo Ziting,Huang Jinchao,Zhong Shengwen

The development of efficient sodium-ion batteries is essential to overcome the issue of limited lithium sources for preparing lithium-ion batteries. Layered Mn-based cathode materials have significant application potential because of their simple structure and high specific capacities. Serious voltage attenuation and phase transition are the prominent problems of layered manganese-sodium ion batteries. To eliminate these issues, in this study, we investigated the effects of different Mn/Ni ratios in Na-Ni-Mn cathode materials on their structural stability and electrochemical performances. Na 0. 8MnO 2 (NNM-8010), Na 0.8 Ni 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 2 (NNM-819), Na 0.8 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 (NNM-828), and Na 0.8 Ni 0.3 Mn 0.7 O 2 (NNM-837) were synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical analyses. The addition of Ni 2+ increased the Mn oxidation state from + 3 to + 4, thus reducing the Jahn–Teller effect of Mn 3+ and stabilizing the material structure. NNM-819 exhibited the best electrochemical performance. Its initial discharge-specific capacity was 198.5mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.2C, and the capacity retention rate after 100 cycles was 86.9% at 0.5C. Moreover, its capacity retention rate at 1.0C high-rate cycling after 100 cycles remained high 81.9%. Graphical Abstract

Preparation of Porous Composite Phase Na Super Ionic Conductor Adsorbent by In Situ Process for Ultrafast and Efficient Strontium Adsorption from Wastewater

Yuliang Chen,Xiangbiao Yin,Hao Fu,Zheyang Lin,Guangcan Ma,Xinpeng Wang,Qingsong Wang,Fangqiang Chen

Strontium, the main component of radioactive nuclear wastewater, is characterized by a high fission yield and an extended half-life. It is easily absorbed by the human body, thus greatly threatening the environment and the human body. In this study, a mesoporous composite phase sodium superionic conductor (NVP@NMP) was synthesized by the droplet template method, and the rapid capture of Sr2+from wastewater was achieved by constructing a nano-heterogeneous interface to increase the ion diffusion rate. NVP@NMP showed efficient and rapid removal of strontium ions in adsorption kinetics, isothermal adsorption, solution pH, and interfering ions concentration tests, especially using the equilibrium time of 2 min for strontium absorption by NVP@NMP and a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 361.36 mg/g. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic, and feasible. At higher concentrations of other competing ions (Na, K, Ca, Mg, and Cs), the adsorbent exhibited higher selectivity towards Sr2+.TEM, XPS, and XRD analyses revealed that ion exchange was the main mechanism for the NVP@NMP ultrafast adsorption of Sr2+. In this research, we investigated the feasibility of ultrafast strontium capture by sodium superionic conductor structured phosphates and explained the ultrafast strontium adsorption mechanism of NASICON materials through XPS.Keywords:NASICON;ultrafast adsorption;strontium;ion exchange;wastewater

C@TiO2/MoO3 Composite Nanofibers with 1T-Phase MoS2 Nanograin Dopant and Stabilized Interfaces as Anodes for Li- and Na-Ion Batteries

Huimin Zhou,Xin Xia,Pengfei Lv,Jin Zhang,Xuebin Hou,Min Zhao,Kelong Ao,Di Wang,Keyu Lu,Hui Qiao,Malgorzata Zimniewska,Qufu Wei

Graphical Better anode by design : A designed anode structure combining the metallic conductivity of 1T-MoS 2 with interconnected TiO 2 /MoO 3 grains is beneficial for fast charge-transfer reactions and reduced transmission losses. Moreover, a flexible carbon framework buffers swollen lithium compounds, such as Li x MoO 3 and Li x MoS 2 , and supports the shrinking delithiated products, with potential for achieving high capacity stability in both Li- and Na-ion batteries. Integrating layered nanostructured MoS 2 with a structurally stable TiO 2 backbone to construct reciprocal MoS 2 /TiO 2 -based nanocomposites is an effective strategy. C@TiO 2 /MoO 3 composite nanofibers doped with 1T-phase MoS 2 nanograins were fabricated by partially sulfurizing MoO x /TiO 2 precursors. By controlling a suitable preoxidation temperature before severe thermolysis of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the MoO x /TiO 2 precursors formed a polymer-embedded array through coordination of the Mo source and pyrrolidyl groups of PVP. Sulfidation under water/solvent hydrothermal conditions led to partial formation of metallic 1T-phase MoS 2 from the MoO x precursor with preoxidation at 200 °C. After carbonization, the TiO 2 /MoO 3 /MoS 2 nanograins were encapsulated in a carbon backbone in a vertical pattern, providing both chemical contact for confined electron transport and sufficient space to adapt to volume changes. The obtained carbon-based platform not only has the advantages of an integral structure, but also exhibited ultrastable specific capacities of 540 and 251 mAh g −1 for Li-ion batteries and Na-ion batteries, respectively, after 100 cycles.

Comparison of microwave and conventional pyrolysis of one-step prepared metal soaps (Li/Na/K/Ca/Mg): Product distribution and heating characteristics

Yuan Zeng,Yuanyuan Wang,Linyao Ke,Qiuhao Wu,Xiaojie Tian,Liangliang Fan,Kirk Cobb,Yuhuan Liu,Roger Ruan,Yunpu Wang

The pyrolysis of metal soaps to produce hydrocarbon rich fuel has been studied extensively. However, the combined effects of microwave radiation and metal ion types on hydrocarbon production have not been addressed. In this study, the microwave and conventional pyrolysis experiments were conducted on five metal soaps (Li soap, Na soap, K soap, Ca soap, Mg soap). The results demonstrated that the metal ions at the carboxyl end of the soap enhanced the polarity of the reactants, leading to a rapid increase in temperature under microwave conditions. With the ion radius increasing, the heating rate increased gradually. Compared with conventional pyrolysis, microwave pyrolysis exhibited a more rapid heating rate, a higher degree of carbon chain fracture, and a greater abundance of small olefin compounds, which promoted aromatization reaction and the release of CO, H 2 and CH 4 . In addition, the composition of the pyrolysis products derived from different metal soaps is affected by the characteristics of metal ions. As the radius of metal ions increased, the oxygen content in the liquid products decreased gradually, while the carbon content increased. The strengthening effect of microwave was further analyzed. With the increase in the radius of metal ions, the strengthening effect of microwaves on olefins formation was gradually weakened, while the inhibiting effect on alkanes formation was gradually enhanced. The structure of carboxylate network is affected by the radius of metal ions, which results in the regular change of the strengthening effect of microwave on olefins and other products. This study is highly significant in guiding the pyrolysis of soapstock waste to prepare olefins and alkanes with high efficiency and low energy consumption.

Crystal structure, thermal decomposition, mechanical sensitivity of Na[CL-14·2H2O] and its catalytic effect on the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate

Jian Cheng,Yan Dong,Hui Ma,Lixia Li,Zuliang Liu,Fengqi Zhao,Siyu Xu

A one-dimensional energetic complex (Na[CL-14·2H2O]) constructed from sodium and 5,7-diamino-4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (CL-14) was synthesized, and its crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The crystal belongs to a monoclinic system with space group P21/c. The complex possesses a one-dimensional coordination framework based on the [ONaN]n chain, which might result in its low sensitivity and high heat resistant. The thermal decomposition mechanism of Na[CL-14·2H2O] was predicted by means of TG-DSC, TG-MS and FTIR analyses. The thermal decomposition of Na[CL-14·2H2O] contains one endothermic and one exothermic processes in the temperature range of 25–500 °C with NaNCO, Na2CO3, H2O, NO and CO2 as the final products. The non-isothermal kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the first exothermic process of the Na[CL-14·2H2O] have been studied, with the apparent activation energy, pre-exponential factor, entropy of activation, enthalpy of activation and free energy of activation of 280.7 kJ mol−1, 57.8, 282.7 J mol−1 K−1, 276.2 kJ mol−1 and 154.8 kJ mol−1, respectively. The impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of Na[CL-14·2H2O] was tested according to general methods, with the values of 27 J and 360 N, respectively. Na[CL-14·2H2O] has been investigated as an energetic catalyst in ammonium nitrate (AN) by means of TG-DTG, TG-MS, DSC and extent of conversion (α)–T kinetic curve analyses. And the thermal kinetic constants for the catalytic and noncatalytic decomposition of AN samples were calculated using Kissinger's and Ozawa–Doyle's equations. The possible catalytic mechanism was also discussed and proposed. The results show that Na[CL-14·2H2O] decreases the peak temperature and activation energy value of the complete decomposition process for AN by 41.3 °C and 10.9 kJ mol−1, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal decomposition of AN in the presence of Na[CL-14·2H2O] starts at significantly lower temperature (about 30 °C) than that of pure AN. Apparently, Na[CL-14·2H2O] could be incorporated as a potential energetic catalyst in AN-based propellants.

Efficient regulation of surface hydroxyl groups on a Pt/Na/AC catalyst using two-step nonthermal plasma for high formaldehyde oxidation performance

Liping Lian,Hui Xu,Ruchen Shu,Yujie Tan,Nan Wang,Jinzhu Ma,Feng Qin,Danyan Cen,Jianyuan Hou,Renxi Zhang

A novel catalyst was fabricated using a two-step nonthermal plasma method by regulating surface hydroxyl groups on Na/activated carbon (AC) with 0.1 wt% Pt loading (Pt/Na/AC (P&P)) and achieved high formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation performance at ambient temperature. Based on characterization results, we found that in the first step of nonthermal plasma treatment under argon–water, the proportion of terminal OH groups (ter-OH groups) evidently increased. Following the introduction of Na and Pt, the relative abundance of doubly bridged OH groups connecting C and Na (briNa–C-OH groups) and Pt2+ species also increased in the second step of nonthermal plasma reduction under argon, resulting in enhanced HCHO catalytic oxidation capability through a rapid reaction pathway ([HCOO−] + [OH]a → CO2 + H2O). Compared with the catalyst prepared via nitric acid oxidation and thermal deposition (Pt/Na/AC (H&T)), more Pt–Ox–Na species and surface OH groups were obtained on the Pt/Na/AC (P&P) catalyst, which not only reduced Pt consumption but also improved HCHO catalytic activity with around 100% conversion of HCHO to CO2 at 25 °C, while the Pt/Na/AC (H&T) catalyst only achieved 70% conversion. This work thus provides a new strategy for HCHO oxidation at room temperature and a novel perspective on the environmentally friendly synthesis of effective noble catalysts.

Insight into the photothermal Fenton-like degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride by cu/Ce modified Na-X zeolites: Performance, mechanism, and degradation pathways

Min Zhou,Dan Zheng,Kun Yang,Lifang Hu,Zhongbiao Zhang

Fenton catalytic oxidation is a prevalent advanced oxidation technology that can be integrated with photocatalysis and thermal catalysis to enhance the degradation of antibiotic wastewater. Zeolites, a distinctive class of crystalline material, are extensively employed in Fenton-like catalytic oxidation due to their robust structure and exceptional catalytic efficacy. In this study, we constructed a novel Cu/Ce-X catalyst via an ion exchange process based on a Na-X zeolite matrix. The crystal phases, framework structures, elemental compositions, specific surface areas, and photothermal catalytic activity of the composite catalyst were characterized systematically. The removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) was 87.69 % in the photothermal Fenton-like degradation, and the apparent first-order kinetics rate constant was 13.6 times, 6.52 times, and 1.72 times greater than those of the Fenton-like, photo Fenton-like, and thermal Fenton-like systems, respectively. The adaptability, reusability, reaction mechanisms, and degradation pathways of the fabricated catalysts for the removal of TCH were investigated. The experimental and characterization results demonstrate that the redox cycling of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ was enhanced through photogenerated electrons and thermal effects in the catalytic degradation process. The primary active species generated in the photothermal Fenton-like system is ·OH. The findings of this research provide a viable strategy for the treatment and remediation of water pollution.

Na related nanowhisker-containing biochar obtained from self-catalyzation and functionalization of papermaking black liquor lignin with superior heavy metal immobilization capability

Jianli Zhang,Yutong Peng,Taoze Liu,Zhanghong Wang

In this study, papermaking black liquor lignin (ULG) was directly used to produce biochar through pyrolysis. It was found that ULG has a high ash content (15.38 %), primarily consisting of Na-related minerals. During pyrolysis, the ash can reduce the activation energy of ULG (by over 6 kJ/mol), promote the development of pore structures, and enhance the graphitization of the resulting biochar through self-catalyzation. Additionally, the Na-related minerals form abundant nanowhiskers on the surface of biochar during pyrolysis, mainly composed of Na 2 CO 3 and Na 3 PO 3 , achieving self-functionalization, particularly in biochar produced at 700 °C (ULG-700). In the adsorption process, these nanowhiskers on the surface of ULG-700 act as efficient active adsorption sites. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity for Cd(II) and Zn(II) by ULG-700 at room temperature is 639.71 and 161.27 mg/g, respectively. This study suggests that ULG can be developed as a low-cost and high-efficient heavy metal adsorbent.

Suppressing proton-induced HER and cathode fading by an aprotic hybrid electrolyte for long-cycle stability of aqueous Na||Zn hybrid batteries

Gege Wang,Yichao Wang,Lingbo Yao,Jianhua Yang,Xiaowei Chi,Yu Liu

Aqueous zinc metal batteries with unique advantages of intrinsic safety and low cost are considered as one of the most promising next-generation energy-storage technologies. However, their lifespan is significantly constrained by the electrolyte, specifically due to limitations caused by proton-induced HER and dendritic growth at the anode side and dissolution phenomena at the cathode. Unlike most studies on the protic electrolyte systems, herein, a new aprotic hybrid electrolyte of Na/Zn tetrafluoroborate-trimethyl phosphate with ultralow proton activity tuned by reconstruction of hydrogen bonding network and ultrahigh interfacial stability endowed by simultaneous formation of SEI and CEI were designed for the first time. Attributed to the synergistic effect of proton activity attenuation and ZnF 2 -Zn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 SEI formation, HER-trigged corrosion current was decreased by 96.52%, which leads to an exceptionally high coulombic efficiency up to 99.63%, and operational lifespan exceeding 2000 hours at 1 mA cm − 2 / 1 mAh cm − 2 for Zn||Cu asymmetric cell and Zn||Zn symmetric cell, respectively. Furthermore, the suppression of excess hydrated proton co-insertion reaction and construction of inorganic-organic CEI enabled the PBAs||Zn full cell a prolonged cycling life of 6000 cycles with an ultralow decay rate of 0.004% per cycle. The special electrolyte utilizing cheap tetrafluoroborate salts in conjunction with cost-effective PBA cathode and Zn anode provides a new choice for low-cost, high-safety, non-toxic batteries for practical applications.

Alleviating anti-site defects and Jahn-Teller effects in Na4Fe1.5Mn1.5(PO4)2(P2O7) for high-power and long-life Na-ion batteries

Shuting Wen,Linlin Zhou,Ling Chen,Yaoguo Fang,Qian Cheng,Haifeng Yu,Hao Jiang

High-safety and low-cost Na 4 Fe 1.5 Mn 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (NFMPP) is a highly promising cathode for Na-ion batteries (SIBs), offering a higher energy density than typical NFPP. However, its performance is hindered by Na/Mn anti-site defects and Jahn-Teller (J-T) distortion, resulting in voltage hysteresis and sluggish Na-ion diffusion kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate a high-rate and long-life NFMPP cathode by synergistically optimizing the initial molar ratio of Na-ion to transition metal (Na/TM) and vanadium (V) doping. The Na/Mn anti-site defects have been greatly alleviated from 5.9 % to 2.2 %, effectively suppressing the voltage hysteresis of Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ redox plateau. Meantime, the electron-rich V doping with strong V-O bonds (541 kJ/mol) exhibits strong interaction with Mn, significantly reducing the effect of J-T distortion on Na-ion diffusion. As a consequence, the optimized NFMPP cathode delivers a superior initial charge capacity of 115.1 mAh/g at 0.1C and achieves a high reversible energy density of 334 Wh/kg, surpassing many reported phosphate-based cathodes. It also exhibits exceptional cycling stability, retaining 94.1 % of its capacity after 500 cycles, making it a highly competitive candidate for next-generation SIBs.

Mesoporous Beta zeolites with controlled distribution of Brønsted acid sites for alkylation of benzene with cyclohexene

Yeqing Huang,Manna Wang,Yi Huang,Jin Shang,Baoyu Liu

The distribution of Brønsted acid sites in three-dimensional 12-membered pore channels of Beta zeolite was a decisive factor in the alkylation of benzene with cyclohexene. Here, the Brønsted acid site distribution in Beta zeolitic channels was precisely regulated by tuning the content of Na + in crystallization system combined with tetraethylammonium cation, the Beta-55 with Brønsted acid sites exclusively located in straight channels (along a - and b -axis directions) was successfully synthesized by utilizing tetraethylammonium as the structure-directing agents without Na + species, and the fraction of Brønsted acid sites in sinusoidal/straight channels of Beta zeolites can be accurately controlled by tailoring the content of Na + in synthesis gel. Catalytic properties in the liquid alkylation between benzene and cyclohexene exhibited that Beta-55 zeolites with the Brønsted acid sites solely located in a -axis and b -axis channels showed the highest cyclohexene conversion, cyclohexylbenzene selectivity and longest lifetime in this reaction. In addition, the resultant Beta zeolites also exhibited low coke generation rate and robust regeneration performance in the alkylation reaction.

Ingeniously Designed Yolk–Shell-Structured FeSe2@NDC Nanoboxes as an Excellent Long-Life and High-Rate Anode for Half/Full Na-Ion Batteries

Jian Feng,Shao-hua Luo,Yang Zhan,Sheng-xue Yan,Peng-wei Li,Lin Zhang,Qing Wang,Ya-hui Zhang,Xin Liu

Thanks to their high conductivity and theoretical capacity, transition metal selenides have demanded significant research attention as prospective anodes for sodium-ion batteries. Nevertheless, their practical applications are hindered by finite cycle life and inferior rate performance because of large volume expansion, polyselenide dissolution, and sluggish dynamics. Herein, the nitrogen-doped carbon (NC)-coated FeSe2 nanoparticles encapsulated in NC nanoboxes (termed FeSe2@NDC NBs) are fabricated through the facile thermal selenization of polydopamine-wrapped Prussian blue precursors. In this composite, the existing nitrogen-doped dual carbon layer improves the intrinsic conductivity and structural integrity, while the unique porous yolk–shell architecture significantly mitigates the volume swelling during the sodium/desodium process. Moreover, the derived Fe–N–C bonds can effectively capture polyselenide, as well as promote Na+ transportation and good reversible conversion reaction. As expected, the FeSe2@NDC NBs deliver remarkable rate performance (374.9 mA h g–1 at 10.0 A g–1) and long-cycling stability (403.3 mA h g–1 over 2000 loops at 5.0 A g–1). When further coupled with a self-made Na3V2(PO4)3@C cathode in sodium-ion full cells, FeSe2@NDC NBs also exhibit considerably high and stable sodium-storage performance.
