Piezoelectric polymer composite films have attracted extensive attention due to their comprehensive characteristics such as low cost, good flexibility, mechanical property and excellent processability. Among the known polymers, poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is an ideal piezoelectric polymer because the β -crystalline form of PVDF has the highest polarization per unit cell. However, initial PVDF mostly suffers from the lack of a β phase, restricting its potential applications. Few-layer MoS 2 is predicted to be strongly piezoelectric owing to the opposite orientations of adjacent atomic layers. In this work, we report an efficient approach to enhance the piezoelectric property of PVDF-based nanocomposites by combining few-layer MoS 2 with PVDF. The product yield for few-layer MoS 2 reached a value as high as 83.3% via a unique liquid-exfoliation technique. For a few-layer MoS 2 /PVDF composite film with 1 wt.% few-layer MoS 2 , a high piezoelectric performance enhancement of 360% was achieved compared with the initial PVDF film. In addition, due to the intrinsic lubrication of MoS 2 , the highest elongation of the piezoelectric composite film was found to be four times higher than that of the pure PVDF film.

Solar steam generation has recently attracted intense attention due to its high solar energy efficiency. However, the state-of-the-art solar distillators are usually composed of solar absorption, water supply and thermal insulation accessories separately, which complicate the fabrication and utilization of the device. Here, a thin polymeric membrane with an asymmetric structure and asymmetric wettability is fabricated for simplifying the vapour generation device. The simplified membrane can integrate enhanced solar harvesting, insulating, water drawing, steam transpiration and self-floating properties in a piece of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The top hydrophilic layer loaded with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) or carbon black (CB) exhibits enhanced broadband light absorption due to the synergistic effect of AuNPs (or CB) and water. The bottom hydrophobic layer facilitated the heat confinement via reducing the heat conduction and minimizing the water pathway through a round edge. This integrative PVDF membrane shows superior performances compared with traditional complex solar steam generation devices. The simplified thin-film distillator allows us to reclaim purified water without recourse to any other accessories, e.g. insulating foam, water path paper or support.

In this paper, the fluoro-polymer-coated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by in situ atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-(perfluoroalkyl) ethyl methacrylate (FEMA) on the surface of MWCNTs. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the fluoro-polymer on MWCNTs surface improved the dispersion and compatibility of MWCNTs in the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix. The PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibited improved thermal stability and reduced crystallinity due to enhanced interface strength between MWCNTs and PVDF. Furthermore, nearly 100% polar phase PVDF formed after introducing high PFEMA@MWCNTs content into PVDF matrix. It was also found that PFEMA@MWCNTs-filled PVDF composites present advantages in increasing dielectric constants and decreasing loss tangents due to the restriction of interface polarization and leakage current. Based on the percolation threshold and ac conductivities, the PFEMA@MWCNTs/PVDF composites exhibit good insulation properties and are promising for high-performance dielectric composite applications.

Porous composite membrane of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/sulfonic silica with high vanadium ions selectivity was fabricated for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application. The porous PVDF membranes were first prepared as matrix via phase transfer method, followed by introducing sulfonic silica into the matrix via sol-gel process. The sulfonic silica filled in the pores can not only provide proton transfer carriers but also suppress the permeation of vanadium ions through the membrane. Moreover, the organic/inorganic composite can enhance the durability of the membrane. The morphologies of composite membranes (PVDF/SiO 2 –SO 3 H) were characterized by SEM technique. Finally, the fabricated composite membrane shows one order of magnitude lower vanadium ion permeability (1.12✕10 −7 cm 2 min −1 ) and 3 times higher ion selectivity compared with Nafion 115 at room temperature. The single cell assembled using the as-prepared composite membrane gives a Coulombic efficiency of 90.3% and an energy efficiency of 75.6% at a current density of 60 mA cm −2 , which is comparable with Nafion 115 (89.7% and 78.2%, respectively). This strategy could provide a simple way to design and fabricate an organic/inorganic composite membrane with high durability for the application in VRFBs.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based nanocomposites with γ-oxo-pyrenebutyric acid-noncovalent modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (denoted as PACNTs) and stearic acid-covalent modified MWCNTs (SACNTs) as nanofillers, were fabricated using solution-blending method and their dielectric properties were carefully investigated. γ-Oxo-pyrenebutyric acid (PA) or stearic acid (SA) can improve the dispersion of MWCNTs in PVDF matrix because of strong physical π–π interaction and the surface of MWCNTs grafted with SA respectively. The values of percolation threshold for PVDF/PACNTs and PVDF/SACNTs were determined to be 5.7 and 6.3 vol%, respectively. Higher dielectric permittivity and lower loss tangent of PVDF/PACNTs originates from remarkable interfacial polarization because PA have more contact area with MWCNTs and can reduce leakage current compared with SA.

The membrane filtration technology is considered as one of the most important approach for removal of hazardous substances from wastewater. Herein, we report a facile surface modification method for preparing a novel membrane via the codepositing tannic acid (TA), polyetheylenimine (PEI), and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The morphologies and chemical compositions of membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the membrane was successfully modified by TA/PEI/HNTs. Compared with pristine membrane, the coated membrane shows the improved hydrophilicity and pure water flux (PWF). The membrane modified by TA/PEI/HNTs achieves higher dyes rejection with 90.7%, 92.8% and 96.0% for direct yellow, direct red and direct blue, respectively. Moreover, the treated membrane exhibits excellent anti-fouling performance after several cycles. In addition, removal capacity for heavy metal ion can be enhanced by the as-prepared membrane with introducing the TA/PEI/HNTs coating. This work provides a facile strategy to carry out the hydrophilic modification of membranes. We hope the as-prepared membrane would have some practical applications for wastewater treatment.

High-performance electrolytes and electrode materials play a critical role in advanced sodium-ion batteries with higher energy densities. In this work, we prepared a poly(methyl methacrylate)-filled composite electrolyte (named as GHSE) by in situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the porous Na3Zr2Si2PO12–polymer vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene composite membrane for the first time. The GHSE membrane exhibits a high ionic conductivity (2.78 × 10–3 S cm–1), wide electrochemical window (∼4.9 V), high Na+ ion transference number (∼0.63), good thermal stability and flexibility, as well as smaller interfacial resistance. Moreover, a composite Na/C anode was prepared, which shows good dendrite suppression ability. The full cell Na0.67Ni0.23Mg0.1Mn0.67O2 |GHSE|Na/C exhibits excellent rate capability with an initial discharge capacity of 96 mAh g–1 even at a higher current density of 192 mA g–1 and excellent cyclability for 600 cycles. These results suggest that the GHSE and Na/C anode are promising electrolyte and anode materials for Na-ion batteries, respectively.

The polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) layer fabricated by chitosan and sodium alginate was anchored on a membrane surface though plasma treatment and layer by layer self-assembly to improve the antifouling properties of the PVDF membrane. The interface properties of modified PVDF membranes were investigated and the results indicated the presence of the PEC layer was conducive to enhance the hydrophilicity and screening ability of the PVDF ultrafiltration membrane due to the hydrophilic crosslinking structure. Furthermore, the fouling resistance including anti-adsorption ability and dynamic antifouling ability for pollutant filtration of modified PVDF membranes were significantly improved due to the anchored PEC layer. For the CS–SA-3 membrane with an assembly number of 3, the adsorption mass of BSA on the membrane surface was only 4 μg cm−2 and the FRR-W values increased to 89%, 99% and 98% for the three typical pollutants of bovine serum albumin, sodium alginate and humic acid, respectively. It was demonstrated that the PEC layer could be used as an antifouling material to improve the antifouling ability of hydrophobic membranes though decreasing the reversible fouling. This article also aimed to provide a simple method to fabricate the antifouling interface.

Oil–water separation is a worldwide challenge because of increasingly oily wastewater, as well as frequent oil spill accidents. We report in this work the fabrication of a zwitterionic polyelectrolyte brush (poly(3-(N-2-methacryloxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl) ammonatopropanesultone), abbreviated as PMAPS)-grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PMAPS-g-PVDF) membrane via a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) technique for separating oil from water. By tuning polymerization time, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic PMAPS-g-PVDF membrane was successfully prepared. The membrane can be applied for thoroughly separating dispersed oil from water with ultrahigh separation efficiency >99.999% in terms of rejection coefficient. The oil contents after one-time separation of a selection of oil–water mixtures are all less than 10 ppm and some of them are even lower than 2 ppm. These values are much lower than the standard minimum requirements of the international regulations for wastewater discharging. The oil-adhesion force between an oil droplet and the membrane surface was measured to be less than 1 μN. Due to the ultralow oil adhesion, the membrane exhibits an excellent antifouling property to oil and is easily recyclable.

A novel composite hollow fiber membrane for membrane aerated biofilm rector (MABR) was prepared by coating L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) on the surface of PVDF membrane. MABR process study was conducted to test the performances of the original and modified membranes for 166 days. The results indicate that coated membrane showed 2 times higher gas flux, lower water contact angle (declined from 86.5° to 52°), and significantly improved surface roughness. The modified membrane displayed an excellent MABR performance. Its COD, NH 4 + –N and TN removal efficiencies were kept above 90%, 98.8% and 84.2% during the first 4-month experiment. By tracking experiment at 0.01 MPa, to achieve COD removal efficiency of 85.9%, half an hour is required with the modified membrane, instead of 6 h using the original one. Besides, faster NH 4 + –N and TN removal at 0.01 MPa were also achieved with DOPA composite membrane.

Polymer based composites with high dielectric constant were successfully fabricated using BaTiO3 nanowires with high aspect ratio as inorganic filler and PVDF-HFP as polymer matrix. PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanoparticles composites were also prepared as a contrast. The BaTiO3 nanowires were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The BaTiO3 nanowires and its two types of composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the composites, breakdown strength measurements, tensile tests and broadband dielectric spectroscopy analyses were also carried out. The results show that the two types of fillers are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. The dielectric constant of composites filled by BaTiO3 nanowires is larger than that filled by BaTiO3 nanoparticles at the same content. Stronger interfacial polarization was found in PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites. Two theoretical models were employed to predict the dielectric constants of composites, and the experimental data were consistent with the estimated trend. The enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites are attributed to the superior interfacial polarization and high aspect ratio of BaTiO3 nanowires.

Poly( p -phenylene terephtalamide) (PPTA) reinforcing blends are of great scientific interest, however the thermodynamic difference of the components make them incompatible with inferior physical-chemical properties. In this work, with the aim of exploring novel separation membrane materials, PPTA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) reinforcing blends were prepared by a novel reactive blending technique of in situ polymerization (method І), and the conventional solution blending (method Π), respectively. The effects of these two methods on polymers compatibility were investigated and compared through ATR-FTIR, XRD, XPS and FESEM characterization. Thermal stability, surface hydrophilicity and mechanical properties were measured through TG, water contact angle (WCA) and tensile measurements. It was found that stronger intermolecular interaction especially hydrogen bonds between polymer components in in-situ blends prevented PVDF from crystallization and a continuous phase configuration appeared. However, slution blends showed an obvious two-phase structure in FESEM observation which varied from a spherical crystallization of PVDF at low PPTA content to a fibrous-like crystallization of PPTA at high PPTA concentration. Solution blends showed lower hydrophilicity which was attributed to the PPTA crystallization and its perpendicular uniplanar orientation along blend film surface. In-situ blends exhibited higher tensile strength which was due to the better polymers compatibility between the rigid reinforced PPTA molecules and flexible PVDF matrix. The PPTA/PVDF in-situ blend is a promising candidate for the high-performance separation membrane material.
