Supported Pt-based bimetallic catalysts are representative types of dehydrogenation catalysts used for alkanes to olefins conversion. The platinum in these catalysts exhibits unique structural features accompanied with changes in electronic states due to the addition of the second metal. To investigate the impact of each effect on the activity for propane dehydrogenation , a series of Pt-M/SiO 2 (M= Fe, Cu, Ga, In and Sn) catalysts were prepared and used for propane dehydrogenation. Utilizing various characterization techniques, the geometric and electronic properties of these catalysts were studied. The relationships between the specific activity of bimetallic platinum catalysts in propane dehydrogenation and atomic sizes of alloys (i) and the total density of unoccupied d bands in platinum (ii) were considered. Via alloy formation, it was found that dilution of the active metal Pt occurred in these SiO 2 supported bimetallic catalysts, and the lattice parameter of Pt-M alloys decreased on Pt-Fe, Pt-Cu and Pt-Ga alloys, but increased on Pt-In and Pt-Sn alloys when compared with that of Pt foil. Catalytic activity was evidently shown to not be a function of the lattice parameters of Pt-M alloys, but appears closely related with the d -holes of Pt in Pt-M bimetallic catalysts. More d holes show favorably high activity. Among the studied Pt-M/SiO 2 (M= Fe, Cu, Ga, In and Sn) catalysts, the prominent and primary role of the electronic effect was demonstrated.

Materials with ultralow thermal conductivity and good thermal stability are of great interest in numerous applications such as energy storage and conversion devices, and thermal insulation components. In this work, a family of high-entropy Sm 2 B 2 O 7 (B=Ti, Zr, Sn, Hf, Y, Yb, Nb, and Ta) oxides with highly disordered cations on the B-site has been synthesized by introducing large atomic-size mismatch, mass and charge disorder. Through tuning the composition, the high-entropy Sm 2 B 2 O 7 oxides can be engineered from pyrochlore to fluorite structure, accompanied with an order-disorder transition. The pyrochlore Sm 2 (Nb 0.2 Sn 0.2 Ti 0.2 Y 0.2 Zr 0.2 ) 2 O 7 and fluorite Sm 2 (Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2 Y 0.2 Yb 0.2 Zr 0.2 ) 2 O 7 exhibit low thermal conductivities of 1.35 W·m −1 ·K −1 and 1.23 W·m −1 ·K −1 , respectively, indicating their good thermal insulation. In addition, the high-entropy fluorite Sm 2 (Nb 0.2 Ta 0.2 Y 0.2 Yb 0.2 Zr 0.2 ) 2 O 7 also shows average thermal expansion coefficient of 10.2 × 10 −6 °C −1 and high-temperature stability even after thermal exposure at 1600 °C in air for 30 h. These results indicate that the high-entropy Sm 2 B 2 O 7 (B=Ti, Zr, Sn, Hf, Y, Yb, Nb, and Ta) can be promising candidates for thermal barrier coatings and thermally insulators.

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to HCOOH offers a promising strategy for a carbon-neutral cycle. Sn-Based materials have been demonstrated as applicable in extensive studies of CO2RR to HCOOH, but great challenges still remain, including the weak CO2 adsorption and narrow potential window as well as low stability. Herein, we developed ultrasmall Sn nanoparticles inlaid on N/P-doped carbon (Sn@NPC) composites by an upcycling design using Sn electroplating sludge. The obtained Sn@NPC electrode exhibited a higher Faradaic efficiency of 87.93% for HCOOH at 1.05 V vs. RHE and an FE over 80% within a 500 mV broad potential window. Moreover, the Sn@NPC electrode achieved excellent long-term stability up to 105 h, which was superior to that of most Sn-based catalysts in similar systems. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that Sn@NPC could enhance CO2 adsorption, which led to stronger *OCHO adsorption, weaker *HCOOH adsorption and faster electron/mass transport. This work may provide a promising lead for recycling metal from electroplating sludge and for the design of efficient and stable catalysts for the CO2RR.

In the present study, metal-organic framework Cu-BTC-supported Sn (II)-substituted Keggin heteropoly nanocomposite (Sn1.5PW/Cu-BTC) was successfully prepared by a simple impregnation method and applied as a novel nanocatalyst for producing biodiesel from oleic acid (OA) through esterification. The nanocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, thermogravimetrics (TG), and NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). Accordingly, the synthesized nanocatalyst with a Sn1.5PW/Cu-BTC weight ratio of 1 exhibited a relatively large specific surface area, appropriate pore size, and high acidity. Moreover, an OA conversion of 87.7% was achieved under optimum reaction conditions. The nanocatalyst was reused seven times, and the OA conversion remained at more than 80% after three uses. Kinetic study showed that the esterification reaction followed first-order kinetics, and the activation energy (Ea) was calculated to be 38.3 kJ/mol.

SnO 2 has been recognized as excellent catalyst towards formate production from electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R). However, it is a great challenge to prepare SnO 2 that is stable under the working condition of CO 2 R and the active center of the SnO 2 -based catalyst towards CO 2 R has been illusive. In this work, Sn-In alloy nanoparticles display an InSn 4 intermetallic core and an amorphous In-doped tin oxide shell and a CO 2 -to-formate faradaic efficiency of 94% and a current density of 236 mA cm −2 was achieved at −0.98 V. Operando X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the In-doped tin oxide shell remains stable under CO 2 R condition. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the In-doped tin oxide results in the formation of oxygen vacancy, stabilized tin oxide shell and exergonic pathway for CO 2 -to-formate, which might account for the high performance of the catalysts towards CO 2 R.

La–Sn-codoped Zn(O,S) catalysts were synthesized with different amounts (0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%) of Sn and a constant amount (10%) of La to improve the photocatalytic hydrogenation reaction (PHR) of azobenzene to aniline. The as-prepared catalysts were carefully characterized and tested for a hydrogenation reaction. The incorporation of Sn significantly enhanced the PHR activities since the incorporated Sn in the Zn(O,S) lattices could increase the conductivity of the catalysts to improve the charge transfer during the catalytic reaction as indicated with EIS measurement. Further measurement with a photoresponse of La–Sn-codoped Zn(O,S) catalysts also exhibited relatively higher intensities as compared to those of La-doped Zn(O,S) and Sn-doped Zn(O,S) catalysts. On the basis of the measurement results of EIS and transient photo current, the La–Sn-codoped Zn(O,S) with the best properties was further utilized for PHR to convert azobenzene to aniline. GC–MS measurement confirmed that 15 ppm azobenzene could be totally converted to aniline in only 60 min which was achieved with a catalyst that was prepared with 5%-Sn and 10%-La doping. The relatively short reaction time indicated that the as-prepared catalyst had a strong reduction capability able to cleave the strong bonding of N═N in azobenzene. The reaction kinetic of the N═N bond cleavage was elucidated based on solvation, adsorption, pinning, and photocatalytic hydrogenation processes on the catalyst surfaces.

By utilizing different small amine molecules as structure-affecting agents (SAAs) and charge-balancing agents (CBAs), four new M–Sn–Q (M = Zn, Ag; Q = S, Se) compounds with the anionic architectures ranging from a one-dimensional (1D) chain to a three-dimensional (3D) network have been solvothermally synthesized. Compound [(Me)2NH2]2ZnSn3Se8 (1) features an anionic (4,4) layer of [ZnSn3Se8]n2n– and represents a rare [ZnSn3Se10] T2 cluster-based two-dimensional Zn–Sn–Se compound directed by organic amine. Compound [NH4]3AgSn3Se8 (2) contains infinite linear anionic chains of [AgSn3Se8]n3n–. Compound [CH3NH3]2[H3O]Ag5Sn4Se12·C2H5OH (3) exhibits a 3D open-framework structure of [Ag5Sn4Se12]n3n– with intersecting 3D channels. Compound [CH3NH3]6Ag12Sn6S21 (4) features a 3D framework structure with 1D channels filled by [CH3NH3]+ cations. The most fascinating structural feature of compound 4 is that a complex 3D [Ag12S17]n22n– anionic network exists based on the combination of three types of basic building blocks of [AgS2] dumbbells, [AgS3] triangles, and [AgS4] tetrahedra. The thermal stabilities, optical properties of the title compounds 1–4, as well as the theoretical band structure and density of states of compound 4 have been studied. Moreover, compound 3 displayed visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of crystal violet.

A new methodology is presented for the rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of irinotecan (CPT-11), a chemotherapeutic agent utilized in the treatment of cancer, along with its metabolically active derivative, SN-38, via laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS). The method includes the detection of camptothecin (CPT), which can be utilized as an internal standard for the quantitative assessment of both CPT-11 and SN-38 in mouse serum. The approach utilizes a plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus nanosheet (BPN)-gold nanomatrix (BP@Au) in LDI MS. The experimental results demonstrated that the BP@Au nanomatrix outperformed the standard organic matrices (SA, CHCA, and DHB) in detecting irinotecan and its active metabolite with improved specificity and sensitivity, crucial factors for applications in personalized medicine. Mass spectra obtained using organic matrices revealed interference from matrix peaks overlapping with analyte peaks. The coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) was 0.9806 for CPT-11 and 0.9932 for SN-38, indicating strong linearity suitable for quantification. Moreover, the method achieved a lower limit of detection (LOD) of 62.76 ng/mL for CPT-11 and 189.87 ng/mL for SN-38, significantly enhancing the detection sensitivity by approximately 2–8 times compared with previous matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) methodologies. This method was subsequently applied to the quantitative determination of analytes in mouse serum. The analyte recoveries for CPT-11 and SN-38 were 95.40% and 92.95%, respectively. Overall, this study offers potential insights and opens avenues for developing new nanomaterials as a MALDI nanomatrix, demonstrating enhanced capabilities for the rapid, specific, and sensitive detection of small biomolecules within the realms of analytical chemistry and personalized medicine. We report Sn(II) and Sn(IV) self-selective dual-doping, respectively, on Fe and Si sites of Li2FeSiO4 nanocrystals due to the steric and electronic structure effects of Sn(II,IV). Combined with experimental studies and theoretical calculations, we investigate the structure–property relationship of tin doped Li2FeSiO4 as the cathode material for high performance Li-ion batteries, in which the dual-doping enhances the electronic conductivity and lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. The doped sample with 5% Sn(IV) source shows the best electrochemical performance due to the improved electronic conductivity and Li-ion diffusivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also reveal that tin dual-doped Li2FeSiO4 has better electronic conductivity and lower voltage of delithiation than that of the undoped Li2FeSiO4, which is in accordance with our experimental results.

The Al sheets alloyed by Ga-In-Sn are generally utilized to react with water for H2 production, while the valuable byproducts, i.e., alumina hydrates, have not been fully studied. In this work, through controlling the reaction temperature, three types of alumina hydrates, bayerite (40 °C), pseudo-boehmite (PB) (70–120 °C), and boehmite (130–160 °C), were successfully prepared based on a series of interface reactions and structural transformations. These alumina hydrates and their calcined products (alumina) possess high purity with a total impurity element content of <450 ppm, especially an extremely low sodium content (<21 ppm) and iron content (<52 ppm). Significantly, the obtained pseudo-boehmite displays excellent surface properties (specific surface area: 332.7 m2 g–1, pore volume: 0.3 cm3 g–1, and pore diameter: 3.6 nm), competitive to the current commercial SB powder by Sasol. This work not only deepens the understanding of the byproducts in a Ga-In-Sn-alloyed Al–water reaction but also establishes a facile “green” method oriented to industrial applications, which is promising for the linkage benefits of the hydrogen production industry.

Hydrothermally synthesized Sn-Beta is an excellent catalyst for the conversion of sugars to alkyl lactates. However, its catalytic performance is highly dependent on the synthesis parameters. In this work, the effects of the synthesis parameters such as the water amount of the synthesis gel and the crystallization time on the synthesis and properties and catalytic performance of Sn-Beta in the conversion of glucose to methyl lactate (MLA) were investigated. The crystallization rate was accelerated remarkably by reducing the water amount of the synthesis gel. With the aid of the Si-Beta seed, Sn-Beta was almost fully-crystallized after one day with nH2O/nSiO2 of 4.5, but seven days were needed with nH2O/nSiO2 of 7.5. However, Sn-Beta synthesized with nH2O/nSiO2 of 4.5 has more extraframework SnO2 due to the fast formation of the *BEA structure and the slow incorporation of Sn4+ into the framework sites, which resulted in the lower activity of MLA formation. More Sn4+ species were incorporated into the framework sites and thus more Lewis acid sites were generated with increasing crystallization time. At the same time, the ratio of open to closed Sn sites (RO/C) increased, which led to the decrease in the activity of MLA formation and due to that, the open Sn site with a proximal silanol is unfavorable for the conversion of glucose to MLA. During recycling study, it is surprisingly found that the yield of MLA increased gradually over the fully-crystallized Sn-Beta catalyst. Characterization results of the recovered catalyst from the eighth run indicate that the structure was preserved well, but the value of RO/C reduced due to the change of the state and microenvironment of Sn species.

TiO 2 is a promising lithium-ion battery anode due to its good operation safety enabled by its voltage profile. However, the intrinsically low electronic/ionic conductivity and moderate reversible capacity compromise its potential for practical applications. It is proposed in this work to incorporate super-small sized metallic high capacity tin-based nanoparticles into TiO 2 /carbon nanohybrids, coupled with in situ generation of mesoporous structures. Difunctional methacrylate resin monomers are used as the solvent and carbon source, followed by carbonization and hydrofluoric (HF) etching treatment. The precursors of TiO 2 , tin-based component, and SiO x porogen agent are homogeneously integrated into the cross-linking network at a molecular level. High reversible capacities, excellent rate capability, and good capacity retention are achieved simultaneously due to synergistic effects from the tin-based component bearing high capacity and good electron conductivity, and mechanical buffer medium of the mesoporous structures. Reversible capacities of 452 mAh g −1 are achieved after 400 cycles at 200 mA g −1 . High rate capacity of 131 mAh g −1 is maintained at 5 A g −1 . The overall capacities are increased by more than 2 times compared with the capacities of the tin-free TiO 2 /C and pristine TiO 2 /SnO 2 /Sn/SiO x /C nanohybrids.
