Lead removal from tin chloride solution by barium sulfate and coprecipitation of (BaxPby)(SO4)2 for the processing of PbSn smelter slag

Lining Yu,Huazhen Cao,Huibin Zhang,Junfeng Kong,Weilun Qian,Anyang Tang,Wenyu Feng,Guoqu Zheng

Owing to the characteristics of mineral paragenesis (equilibrium sequence of mineral phases), the hydrochloric acid leach liquors of Sn ores and Sn-containing waste materials typically contain large amounts of Pb. In this study, barium sulfate coprecipitation was employed to efficiently remove Pb from a tin chloride solution. The lead removal efficiency, reaction mechanism, and limitations were investigated by varying the Cl − and SO 4 2− concentrations. The results showed that the structural formula of the precipitates was (Ba x Pb y )(SO 4 ) 2 (x + y = 2), and its solubility product was in the range of 1 × 10 −12 –1 × 10 −13 , indicating that Pb 2+ and Ba 2+ were more easily precipitated in the form of complex salts. In addition, thermodynamic analysis revealed that when the Cl − concentration was <1 mol/L in the Pb 2+ –Sn 2+ –Cl − –H 2 O system, [Pb 2+ ] and [PbCl + ] were the primary species. These positively charged species were readily adsorbed onto the surface of BaSO 4 via electrostatic forces, resulting in a significant increase in the Pb content of (Ba x Pb y )(SO 4 ) 2 . Therefore, the Pb removal efficiency significantly improved as Cl − concentration decreased. The lead removal mechanism involves a combination of adsorption and replacement processes. Based on the aforementioned fundamental study, a method involving dechlorination and coprecipitation was proposed to remove lead from an acid leaching solution of Kaldo slag. With the dechlorination via distillation, the Pb removal efficiency could reach 99.9% at 1 mol/L Cl − and 0.5 mol/L SO 4 2− .

All-weather self-healing superhydrophobic coating functionalized with the cauliflower-like PPy and TiN on cotton fabric for efficient oil-water separation

Chao-Chen Cai,Juan Qin,Qing-Kai Zhu,Ting-Ting Li,Ching-Wen Lou,Jia-Horng Lin,Hai-Tao Ren

Superhydrophobic materials are currently undergoing rapid development in various industries, with increasing attention being paid to their service life. Herein, we report an all-weather self-healing superhydrophobic cotton fabric based on photothermal and Joule-heating effects, which can be used for efficient oil-water separation. With the assistance of Safranine T, unique cauliflower-like polypyrrole (PPy) was prepared. Subsequently, titanium nitride (TiN) was loaded to enhance the photothermal performance of the fabric, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was grafted onto surface to improve the water repellency of PPy@TiN/PDMS fabric. The fabric not only has strong light absorption in visible-near infrared region, but also has good Joule-heating effect, up to 116.3 °C (light intensity of 5 sun) and 128.5 °C (voltage of 8 V). Due to unique all-weather heating performance, the migration of low surface energy PDMS chains is accelerated, so that the PPy@TiN/PDMS fabric after air plasma etching and oxydation can quickly heal its water contact angle (WCA) to 156° under light or low voltage conditions. Additionally, the fabric demonstrates an outstanding performance for the separation of various oil-water mixtures and in multiple cycle separation experiments. This study presents a novel approach for extending the longevity of superhydrophobicity and addressing the issue of waste oil treatment.

Microstructural evolution of a novel TiN ceramic aerogel derived from the organic/inorganic hybrid with excellent anti-oxidation and thermal insulation property

Tete Daniel Koudama,Congxuan Su,Yihe Zhao,Xiaodong Wu,Ke Yuan,Sheng Cui,Xiaodong Shen,Xiangbao Chen

Ceramic aerogels are promising candidates for high-temperature thermal resistance and thermal insulation materials. However, their application can be restricted by their brittleness when exposed to harsh conditions. Herein, this study has developed a novel synthesis process based on a sol-gel method and carbothermal reduction-nitridation to produce a porous TiN composite aerogel from an organic/inorganic hybrid. The resulting TiN displays a polyhedral particle size of around 30–60 nm with nanoscale pores. In addition, the TiN aerogel demonstrates a high BET-specific surface area of 653.42 m 2 /g and a very low thermal conductivity of 0.046 W/(m·K). Furthermore, the TiN aerogel composite displays a good thermal difference with no shrinkage and cracks of the morphology during the butane blazing torch at 1300 °C for 10 min under air environment, demonstrating its excellent thermal insulation property and anti-oxidation characteristics. The gas-solid reaction mechanism of TiN aerogel based on the Gibbs free energy calculations is also proposed.

Crystallization kinetics regulation of lead-tin-mixed perovskite with fully developed micron-scale pre-nucleation clusters for high-performance near-infrared photodetectors

Xianwen Liu,Bin Liu,Xuyang Li,Dan Kuang,Qi Yao,Shuo Zhang,Congyang Wen,Xiaorui Zi,Zijin Xiao,Feng Wang,Zhinong Yu

The crystallization dynamics of lead-tin perovskites play a critical role in determining film quality and optoelectronic performance, yet the rapid crystallization rate induced by tin incorporation complicates the nucleation and growth processes of perovskite. With a focus on understanding the role of pre-nucleation clusters (PNCs) in precursor dispersion, we herein find that the particle size of fully developed micron-scale PNCs, under non-classical nucleation theory, is closer to the critical nucleation size, thereby lowering the nucleation barrier. Compared to partially aggregated pre-nucleation clusters (PAPNCs), PNCs exhibit a uniform distribution and larger dimensions, as confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses, which reduce colloidal heterogeneity and bring the nanoparticle in precursor dispersion closer to the critical nucleation size. This promotes consistent nucleation, accelerates crystallization, and results in compact, pinhole-free films with enhanced crystallinity, reduced trap densities, and prolonged carrier lifetime. These improvements lead to superior near-infrared photodetector performance, achieving a detectivity of 2.54 × 10 12 Jones and a responsivity of 0.56 A/W under 940 nm NIR illumination. This work highlights the critical impact of uniformly distributed large size PNCs on tailoring crystallization dynamics and advancing the performance of perovskite-based optoelectronic devices.

Preparation of high capacity Sn2S3/Sn3S4/FeS/Fe7S8 heterostructure composite lithium-ion battery anodes from reducing agents Fe and tin-based sulfides

Zhang Lichen,Lin Jie,Wang Xintong,Zhu Xinxin,Ding Yihong,Jin Huile,Zeng Tianbiao

Tin-based sulfides, such as SnS 2 , have garnered attention as lithium-ion anode materials due to their layer structure and high conductivity capacity. However, during the lithium alloying/dealloying cycles, SnS 2 material exhibits a rapid capacity decay due to the volume expansion, which hinders the application of SnS 2 . In this study, a heterostructure composite material anchored on exfoliated graphite, designated as nano SnS 2 S 3 /Sn 3 S 4 /FeS/Fe 7 S 8 anchored on 15.0 wt% exfoliated graphite (FSS/G-15%), was synthesized by heating a mixture of inexpensive reducing agent Fe powder and SnS 2 powder, followed by ball milling with 15.0 wt% commercial graphite. Experimental results demonstrated that FSS/G-15% had exhibited optimal overall Li + storage performance, achieving approximately 1306.7, 1199.2, 1033.1, 882.3, 707.3, 507, 366.3, 255.6, and 203.5 mA hg −1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 Ag −1 , respectively, surpassing the majority of SnS 2 -based anode materials. The simplicity and efficiency of the synthetic method may have potential implications in various fields in the future.

Full-spectrum solid-state lighting with ultra-high color rendering index exceeding 96 based on low melting point tin-fluorophosphate glass matrix

Tiqun Wei,Liang Yang,Zhihao Jiang,Zihao Han,Jianwei Dao,Run Hu

White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have received widespread attention for achieving high color rendering (R a  > 90) by utilizing RGB phosphors in combination with near-ultraviolet (NUV) chips. However, it is still a challenge to achieve R a  > 95 with blue chips for commercial RGB phosphors dispersed in phosphor-in-glass (PiG). In this study, a low melting point tin fluorophosphate glass matrix was selected as the host glass and embedded with commercial CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (CASN), BaSi 2 O 2 N 2 :Eu 2+ (BSON), and Y 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAG) phosphor. The PiG was successfully prepared, exhibiting full-spectrum (R a  > 95). The phase distribution and composition of the PiG were investigated in detail. Notably, under 460 nm blue chip excitation, PiG-LEDs of different concentrations exhibited excellent color rendering (R a  > 90). With an increase in phosphor concentration, the R a value gradually rises. When the phosphor concentration is 11 %, the constructed PiG-LED exhibits bright white LEDs with ultra-high color rendering (R a  = 96.2) and low correlated color temperature (CCT = 3317 K) under 300 mA current. The color quality of white LEDs was systematically investigated using the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America's (IES) Evaluation System, and the PiG-LED exhibited fidelity index (R f ) and gamut index (R g ) close to sunlight (R f  = 91, R g  = 101). In the emission spectrum's temperature dependency , when the temperature rises from 25 °C to 150 °C, the luminous intensity only decreases 9.18 %, indicating that the PiG has superior thermal resistance . Thus, the PiG has high color rendering and superior thermal characteristics, showing great potential application in high-power white LEDs.

Liquid phase delamination of non-van der Waal two-dimensional sheets of tin monoxide for flexible and long lifespan sodium-ion batteries

Yanan Zhang,Jinpeng Ji,Sher Zaman,Chao Zhu,Na Liu,Pengfei Li,Tao Ju,Fengxia Geng

Sodium-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries, but typically suffer from slow redox kinetics and short cycle life. These problems arise mainly from the much larger radius of the sodium ion, which results in slow diffusion and causes a large volume change during operation. Using the two-dimensional (2D) sheet form of redox-active materials with an increased number of exposed reactive sites on the surface could mitigate volume expansionwhile improving rate capabilities. Based on our recently developed strategy where we used a physical calendering method to weaken non-van der Waals (vdW) interactions, in this work we demonstrate liquid phase delamination of SnO to enable facile mass production of few-layer sheets. The 2D morphology allowed highly reversible redox reactions due to the greater exposure of Sn atoms. Thus, free-standing films formed from SnO sheets infiltrated with carbon nanotubes as conductive fillers exhibited excellent rate capabilities (620 and 432 mAh g −1 at 115 and 1150 mA g −1 respectively) and long cycle-life performance (77% of the initial capacity after 2000 cycles at 1150 mA g −1 ). Pouch full-cells assembled with Na 0.61 Fe[Fe(CN) 6 ] 0.94 cathode successfully powered electronic devices, e.g. light emitting diode lamps, even when bent or folded. This work thus proposes a new way to the mass production of non-vdW SnO sheets and highlights the potential of thinned non-vdW materials for electrochemical energy storage.

Insight into Copper Oxide-Tin Oxide Catalysts for the Catalytic Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide: Identification of Active Copper Species and a Reaction Mechanism

Xueqin Bai,Shujing Chai,Cheng Liu,Kui Ma,Qingpeng Cheng,Ye Tian,Tong Ding,Zheng Jiang,Jing Zhang,Lirong Zheng,Xingang Li

Herein, we report the high activity of CuO-SnO 2 catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of CO. In particular, SnCu30 shows the highest activity and a high water resistance. If we compare the XRD, X-ray absorption fine structure, and H 2 temperature-programmed reduction results of SnCu30 before and after HNO 3 treatment, we find the existence of three kinds of Cu species in the catalyst, that is, highly dispersed CuO, bulk CuO, and Cu incorporated in the SnO 2 lattice. The highly dispersed CuO and the surface lattice oxygen species are the active sites for the catalytic oxidation of CO. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy to confirm the existence of Cu + species on the surface of the CuO-SnO 2 catalysts, which can provide the adsorption sites for CO. Our results show that the reaction pathways of the catalytic oxidation of CO over the CuO-SnO 2 catalysts follow the Mars–van Krevelen model. Graphical When oxides oxidize : CuO-SnO 2 catalysts show a high activity and water resistance for the catalytic oxidation of CO. Three Cu species are identified on the catalysts, and the highly dispersed Cu, as well as the surface lattice oxygen, is the active site for the catalytic oxidation of CO. The reaction mechanism follows the Mars–van Krevelen model.

From high-impurity waste indium tin oxide (ITO) targets to high-purity nano-In2O3: In, Sn, Al, and Mo leaching and separation mechanisms

Bingbing Liu,Suying Dong,Peiying Li,Shengpeng Su,Wenjuan Wang,Shuzhen Yang,Yanfang Huang,Hu Sun,Guihong Han

Indium (In) is a typical critical metal, and the recycling of waste In-Tin oxide (ITO) target can alleviate the In resource supply scarcity. The dismantling and preprocessing of waste ITO targets inevitably introduce metallic impurities, posing significant challenges for In recovery, particularly the separation of In from Sn and the removal of other impurities. This study developed an integrated hydrometallurgical process to prepare high-purity nano-In 2 O 3 from high-impurity waste ITO, highlighting on the leaching and separation mechanisms of In, Sn, Al, and Mo. The process consists of HCl leaching for Mo separation, selective sulfide precipitation for In/Sn separation, TOA/TBP synergistic extraction for In/Al separation, and calcination for nano-In 2 O 3 preparation. Under optimal conditions, HCl leaching extracted over 94% of In, Sn, and Al while selectively suppressing Mo dissolution to below 13%. The HCl leaching, sulfide precipitation, and solvent extraction mechanisms are also discussed in this study. The final In 2 O 3 product was 99.98% pure, with about 25 nm average particle size and 77.8% overall In recovery. This work provides an efficient route for high-purity nano-In 2 O 3 production from high-impurity wastes.

Interface Electronic-Structure Engineered TiN/C Aerogel Composites for Latent Heat Enhancement in Water-Based Phase Change Materials toward Efficient Cold Energy Storage

Aiyue Sun,Ying Zhang,Zhenhua Gu,Guoliang Li,Yi Zhang,Ze Zong,Yali Liu,Xin Li,Muhammad Shahzad,Ming Li

To address the low thermal conductivity, severe supercooling, and poor long-term cycling stability of water-based phase change materials (PCMs), functional additives are commonly introduced. However, latent heat loss is inevitably induced by the disruption of the hydrogen-bonding network of water molecules. Herein, we propose an interface electronic-structure engineering strategy to regulate phase transition behavior by constructing electronically active heterointerfaces with a stable built-in electric field. The TiN/C heterostructure derived from MXene/cellulose aerogels is designed, in which TiN nanocrystals are in situ anchored within a porous carbon framework, forming robust TiN–C covalent interfaces. The resulting built-in electric field enhances water molecule polarization and interfacial chemical adsorption, stabilizes the hydrogen-bond network during repeated phase transitions, and promotes molecular and ionic migration. The optimized TiN/C-3 PCM exhibits a latent heat of 268.83 J g -1 with an ultralow additive loading of 7.1wt%, corresponding to a latent heat retention of 97.92%, and maintains 97.7% of its initial performance after 100 cycles. Cold-chain simulations further demonstrate stable temperature control at 0–4 °C for over 7 h, highlighting its potential for sustainable cold-chain applications. This work provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance PCMs, demonstrating the enormous potential of sustainable cold chain logistics.

A visible-light-responsive DiSCn(3)-type fluorescent probe for the rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of tin(II) ions in aqueous solution

Ruiji Li,Dong Wang,Xiaoyun Li,Zehui Zhang,Wei Li

Visible-light-excited fluorescent probes with excellent water solubility are of significant research importance in the biomedical field. In this work, a series of visible-light-responsive carbocyanine fluorescent compounds [DiSCn(3)] are synthesized from 2-methylbenzothiazole and are employed as fluorescent probes for detecting tin(II) ions. Upon addition of tin(II) ions to an aqueous solution of compounds DiSCn(3)-3 and 4, both exhibit considerable changes in their absorption and fluorescent intensity, respectively. These spectral changes may correspond to the binding between tin(II) ions and the sulfur atom in the benzothiazole unit to form a metal complex. This indicates that DiSCn(3)-3 and 4 can be used as promising fluorescent chemical sensors for detecting tin(II) ions in aqueous solution via visible-light excitation.

Regulating light olefins or aromatics production in ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of biomass by engineering the structure of tin modified ZSM-5 catalyst

Jingyuan Shang,Guangbin Fu,Zhenping Cai,Xiang Feng,Yongxiao Tuo,Xin Zhou,Hao Yan,Chong Peng,Xin Jin,Yibin Liu,Xiaobo Chen,Chaohe Yang,De Chen

Valorization of biomass to olefin or aromatics harbours tremendous practical value due to growing concerns about sustainable production of chemicals. Herein, the olefin or aromatics yields of ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of pine can be regulated by impregnating Sn on hollow-structured ZSM-5 (M-ZSM-5) and microporous ZSM-5 catalysts in fixed-bed reactor, respectively. Results showed that Sn/ZSM-5 catalyst simultaneously increased medium acidic sites and maintained strong acidic sites, which obtained the maximum carbon yield of aromatics (33.77%) due to enhanced cracking and deoxygenation reactions. In addition, Sn boosted alkylation between olefin and aromatics, generating more alkylbenzene. In contrast, Sn/M-ZSM-5 catalyst produced the highest olefins carbon yield (12.39%) because the reduction of strong acidic sites and microporous volume inhibited the olefin aromatization. Moreover, olefins were easier to desorb from Sn/M-ZSM-5 due to the enhanced mass transfer ability, which weakened the alkylation reactions. The synergistic effect harbours great significance to manipulate the distribution of products.
