Solar withering is essential for the aroma formation of oolong tea, but due to the rainy and humid weather in plantation areas, solar withering became insufficient which seriously limits high-grade oolong tea production. This study aims to investigate ultraviolet B (UV-B) effects on the aroma characteristics of oolong tea and its feasibility in improving tea aroma quality. Sensory evaluation, odorant quantitation, and aroma characteristic analysis suggested UV-B application during the aeration process provided similar effects as solar withering in improving the aroma quality of oolong tea. UV-B application significantly increased fruity and floral odorants (4-hexanolide, α -farnesene, and β -ocimene by 44%, 74%, and 37%, respectively), and decreased green and fatty odorants (hexanal, ( E )-2-octenal, and ( Z )-4-heptenal by 42%, 45%, and 27%, respectively). These indicate UV-B is crucial for the flowery and fruity aroma formation of oolong tea, which can be potentially applied to oolong tea production, especially under unsunny weather.

This study investigated the use of ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation for the activation of formic acid (FA) to reduce U(VI) in aqueous solutions. The results demonstrated that under UV radiation, FA exhibited a higher U(VI) reduction efficiency than other organic acids, and up to 70% of U(VI) in aqueous solutions was successfully removed. Electron spin resonance and methanol quenching experiments confirmed that U(VI) reduction in the UV/FA process was due to the electron transfer facilitated by FA (HCOOH) and CO 2 •− . This catalyst-free UV/FA process holds promise for the reduction of U(VI) in leaking water from uranium tailing ponds.

Transparent wood-based materials show great potential for energy-efficient housing and construction due to their ideal optical performances, good mechanical strengths, and low thermal conductivity. However, it still remains a great challenge to fabricate UV-blocking and strong transparent wood-based materials with isotropic optical and mechanical properties, mainly due to the natural anisotropy of wood. Herein, we describe a facile strategy to prepare transparent wood-based biocomposites by integrating delignified wood particles with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) impregnation prior to the compression treatment. This method enables biocomposites to show desirable isotropic optical and mechanical properties, easily tunable high wood component percentage and UV-blocking ability. The enhanced interfacial bonding between wood particles and PVA polymer, together with a similar refractive index, synergistically contributes to excellent performance. The resulting biocomposites (approximately thickness of 1 mm) possess isotropic optical and UV-blocking properties and have a maximum optical transmittance of 62%. The highest tensile strength and flexural strength can reach 86.8 and 158.8 MPa, respectively. Moreover, they display low thermal conductivity (0.38–0.42 W m−1 k−1) and suitable thermal stability. Therefore, this study provides a new method to optimize the properties of transparent wood-based materials for utilization in energy-saving building fields.

X-ray nanoscintillator-based photoresponsive therapy is emerging as a promising strategy to treat in vivo tumors, necessitating the development of nanoscintillators with X-ray-excited luminescence in the ultraviolet region (UV-XEL) for the photoactivation of therapeutic precursors. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high-efficiency X-ray-activated tumor therapy due to the limited UV-XEL efficacy. Herein, we developed novel Gd 3+ /Ce 3+ -codoped LiLuF 4 nanoscintillators with strong UV-XEL for in vivo tumor therapy. Significantly, through optimization of host materials, dopants, and energy transfer process, the developed nanoscintillators enabled effective enhancement of UV-XEL (up to 18-fold) as compared with the traditional Ce 3+ -doped counterparts. As a proof-of-concept study to evaluate the in vivo therapeutic applications of the nanoscintillators, we integrated them with nitric oxide (NO) precursors for controllably generating NO upon the X-ray exposure, achieving superior in vivo antitumor effect upon X-ray-induced synergetic NO therapy and radiotherapy. Moreover, X-ray-activated NO therapy can inhibit tumor metastasis into liver to suppress tumor regrowth and prolong mice survival. This work might motivate future development of X-ray nanoscintillators for treating diseases in deep tissue.

The degradation kinetics, reaction pathways, and disinfection by-products formation of an organic UV filter, benzophenone-4 (BP4) during UV/persulfate oxidation were investigated. BP4 can hardly be degraded by UV alone, but can be effectively decomposed by UV/persulfate following pseudo-first order kinetics. BP4 degradation rate was enhanced with increasing persulfate dosage and decreasing pH from 8 to 5. However, the degradation rate of BP4 at pH 9 was higher than that at pH 8 because of the presence of phenolic group in BP4 structure. and SO4−⋅ were confirmed as the major contributors to BP4 decomposition in radical scavenging experiments, and the second-order rate constants between HO⋅ and BP4 as well as those between SO4−⋅ and BP4 were estimated by establishing and solving a kinetic model. The presence of Br− and humic acid inhibited the decomposition of BP4, while NO3− promoted it. The mineralisation of BP4 was only 9.1% at the persulfate concentration of 50 μM. Six degradation intermediates were identified for the promulgation of the reaction pathways of BP4 during UV/persulfate oxidation were proposed as a result. In addition, the formation of DBP in the sequential chlorination was evaluated at different persulfate dosages, pH values, and water matrix. The results of this study can provide essential knowledge for the effective control of DBP formation with reducing potential hazard to provide safe drinking water to the public.

Here, we combined experimental measurements and DFT calculations to study UV–vis absorption spectra. DFT calculations of azobenzene and its derivatives proved useful for estimation of experimental spectra with near one-to-one correspondence. Calculation results show that substituents have no obvious effect on the coplanarity of benzene rings and N N bond. Potential energy surfaces were calculated for DHA and DEA. In the ground state, the inversion pathway was found to be preferred. A conical intersection was found between the ground and first excited states along the rotation pathway, indicating that the rotation mechanism is favored in the first excited state for DHA and DEA. UV–vis spectra of DHA and DEA were calculated by TD-DFT. Compared with azobenzene, the calculated wavelength of maximum absorption of DHA- trans and DEA- trans has red shift in UV–vis absorption spectra, which are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

Guidewires have crucial roles in intravascular, critical care, and urological applications. In recent years, the demand for guidewires with lower friction surfaces has arisen for medical applications. Among various surface lubrication strategies for guidewires, the most promising is the use of a hydrophilic coating. However, obtaining a hydrophilic coating on guidewires with strong adhesion remains difficult owing to the surface energy difference between the substrate and hydrophilic coating. Herein, we present a UV-curing semi-interpenetrating polymer network coating for medical thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-sheathed nitinol guidewires. A polyurethane acrylate (PUA) was synthesized and cured as a transition layer on the TPU substrate to provide strong adhesion. Then, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) permeated into the PUA layer and cured to form the composite coating. The PUA–PEGDA–PVP coating exhibited excellent lubricity and satisfactory adhesion force. The surface coefficient of friction decreased to approximately 0.02 after modification with the coating, and the coating was stable during long-term soaking in water and repeated friction. In vitro toxicity tests revealed that the coating had good biocompatibility. Thus, our PUA–PEGDA–PVP coating has the potential for application as super-lubricity guidewires and other medical devices.

Cesium-doped tungsten bronze CsxWO3 (CWO) is an ideal near infrared (NIR) shielding material for solar filters. However, the NIR shielding ability of CWO-dispersed films easily deteriorates in hot humid environments, which severely hinders the commercial application of CWO. In this paper, UV/NIR shielding nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing core–shell structured CWO@polydopamine (CWO@PDA) in a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. Because of the strong ultraviolet light absorption ability of PDA, it can shield ultraviolet light, which is generally detrimental to our health. The prepared nanocomposite films can efficiently shield 88.3% UV and 85.5% NIR radiation even though they show relatively high transparency in the visible range. Importantly, the good protection of the continuous PDA shells played an important role in enhancing the stability of CWO nanoparticles. The nanocomposite films also exhibit excellent stability in hot humid environments. Therefore, core–shell structured CWO@PDA nanoparticles have great potential as a novel UV/NIR shielding material for the development of efficient energy-saving windows.

Chitosan has attracted much attention for use in antimicrobial food packaging because of its unique antibacterial properties and excellent film-forming ability. However, its poor barrier properties to UV light and high water-solubility limit its application. In this study, modified cellulose nanofiber was incorporated into chitosan films to improve their UV blocking, physical, and antibacterial properties. Modified cellulose nanofiber was obtained by grafting curcumin to 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that cellulose was successfully modified. Bio-nanocomposite films composed of chitosan (67–100 wt %) and curcumin grafted TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (CGTOCNF, 0–33 wt %) were prepared using the casting method. Scanning electron microscopy images and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the addition of CGTOCNF noticeably affected the morphology of the composite films, with the crystallinity significantly increasing from 21.93% to 87.15%. Moreover, CGTOCNF incorporation improved the oxidation resistance and UV blocking properties of the composite films compared to pure chitosan films. It is also worth mentioning that all of the composite films have excellent antibacterial activity with CGTOCNF partially replacing chitosan. Furthermore, the water solubility of films decreased with the incorporation of CGTOCNF. However, this study demonstrated that incorporation of CGTOCNF at concentrations greater than 10% resulted in a slight decrease in the water vapor barrier properties and mechanical strength of chitosan films. The findings in this work indicate that the addition of 10% CGTOCNF to chitosan films enhances their physical and antibacterial properties, thus increasing their potential for use in food packaging.

Chemical modification of cellulose to prepare functional cellulose derivatives could enable the utilization of cellulose in various promising applications. However, the conventional methods for cellulose functionalization suffer from severe drawbacks, especially the environmental aspects, due to the use of toxic reagents and the generation of large amounts of waste. Herein, a more sustainable way, the novel hydroxyl–yne click reaction, is proposed to synthesize cellulose derivatives. The hydroxyl groups of ethyl cellulose (EC) were reacted with the alkyne groups of 1-phenyl-2-propargyl-1-ketone (PPK) at room temperature for preparing new kinds of ethyl cellulose phenyl propylene ketone ether derivatives (ECPPKs). More than 80% substitution was rapidly completed within the first 5 min and 82% of the residual hydroxyl groups (–OHC3) in EC could be substituted, demonstrating the high efficiency of the hydroxyl–yne click reaction for the modification of cellulosic materials. FTIR and NMR results proved the successful grafting of PPK via a vinyl ether linkage (–C–O–CC–). The introduction of PPK moieties widened the temperature window for the melt processing of cellulose, which is beneficial for the thermo processing of cellulosic materials. Furthermore, owing to the existence of the newly formed vinyl ether linkage, ECPPKs showed almost 100% shielding ratio for UV light and visible light (420 nm) excited fluorescence properties. This facile and efficient method provides a more sustainable strategy for the functionalization of cellulosic materials, expanding its application in UV-blocking and fluorescent material fields.

The present research systematically investigates the atenolol (ATL) degradation in integrated UV/Ozone (O 3 )/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process focusing on the synergistic mechanism, reaction kinetics, pollutant degradation pathway and antibacterial activity. The results manifested that the integrated UV/O 3 /PMS process showed the noteworthy superiority to ATL degradation compared with UV/PMS, UV/O 3 and O 3 /PMS systems. Simultaneously, the impacts of operating parameters like PMS dosage, initial ATL concentration, solution pH and water matrix were comprehensively explored. The ATL elimination efficiency increased linearly with PMS dose and significantly enhanced in alkaline conditions. The • OH and SO 4 •− were the primary reactive radicals for ATL oxidation in UV/O 3 /PMS system based on the radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance characterization. Besides, a simplified kinetic model on the basis of the dominant reactions and the steady-state assumption was established to foretell the relative contributions of reactive oxidants for ATL elimination in UV/O 3 /PMS process. Main transformation products were determined via UPLC-QTOF-MS to infer the possible degradation pathways of ATL. Furthermore, the UV/O 3 /PMS process could distinctly mitigate the antibacterial activity of ATL and its intermediates to E. coli and B. subtilis . Our findings may have critical implications for the development of novel oxidation processes for recalcitrant contaminants mitigation in water purification .
