Colloidal Design and Preparation of an Internal Electric Modulated Z-Scheme BiOI-CdS Heteronanostructure with Oxygen-Rich Vacancies

Yuqing He,Yuqing Liu,Jianding Zhang,Dong Zheng,Xuzhuo Fan,Gang Zhang,Di Wang,Wenping Wang,Shikui Han

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting offers an ideal strategy for the development of clean and renewable energy. However, its practical implementation is often inhibited by the high recombination rate of photogenerated charge carriers and the instability of photoanodes. Introducing defect engineering (such as oxygen vacancies) and constructing internal electric field-modulated Z-scheme heteronanostructures (HNs) can be considered as effective approaches to overcome these obstacles. Herein, a flexible method is developed for synthesizing Z-scheme BiOI-CdS HNs with oxygen vacancies, which induce an internal electric field between ultrathin BiOI nanosheets and a CdS semiconductor. This Z-scheme mechanism significantly promotes the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thereby enhancing the PEC performance. The BiOI-CdS photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.22 mA cm–2 at 1.6 V vs RHE under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm–2), outperforming bare BiOI and CdS. Moreover, the photoanode exhibits exceptional stability with only a slight decrease of approximately in its initial photocurrent after a rigorous 4 h test, surpassing other counterparts in terms of durability. This work affords a better understanding of oxygen vacancies and the construction of highly efficient and stable Z-scheme photoanodes for feasible PEC application.

Fabrication of an all solid Z-scheme photocatalyst g-C3N4/GO/AgBr with enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity

Xuli Miao,Xiaoping Shen,Jiajia Wu,Zhenyuan Ji,Jiheng Wang,Lirong Kong,Miaomiao Liu,Chunsen Song

In this work, an excellent ternary visible-light all solid Z-scheme photocatalytic heterojunction of g-C 3 N 4 /GO/AgBr has been prepared by the attachment of graphene oxide (GO) to the surface of g-C 3 N 4 , followed by in-situ growth of AgBr nanoparticles on GO sheets. The g-C 3 N 4 /GO/AgBr heterojunction exhibits excellent photocatalytic efficiency for RhB degradation, which is about 17.5, 7.9, 3.5, 4.0 and 2.2 times as high as that of P25, g-C 3 N 4 , AgBr, g-C 3 N 4 /GO and g-C 3 N 4 /AgBr heterojunction, indicating the introduction of GO into the system largely improved the capability of the photocatalysis since GO acted as the charge transmission bridge between g-C 3 N 4 and AgBr. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 /GO/AgBr just showed a slight decrease after 4 degradation cycles, demonstrating a high stability of the g-C 3 N 4 /GO/AgBr photocatalyst. The photocatalytic mechanism investigation indicated that O 2 − and h + are the major active species in the photocatalytic process. It is expected that the GO-inserted Z-scheme photocatalytic heterojunction could be applied to practical pollutant degradation.

Novel 3DOM-SrTiO3/Ag/Ag3PO4 ternary Z-scheme photocatalysts with remarkably improved activity and durability for contaminant degradation

Chenxi Zhang,Kai Yu,Yajun Feng,Yue Chang,Ting Yang,Ying Xuan,Da Lei,Lan-Lan Lou,Shuangxi Liu

The novel visible-light-driven 3DOM-SrTiO 3 /Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary composites were fabricated and used as photocatalysts in the degradation of organic contaminants, including RhB, phenol , and MB. Through the XRD, SEM, TEM, DR UV–vis, XPS, PL spectroscopy, N 2 sorption , and photoelectrochemical measurement, the obtained 3DOM-SrTiO 3 /Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary composites were well characterized. The effects of SrTiO 3 :Ag 3 PO 4 molar ratio and stop-bands of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 on the catalytic performance were systemically investigated. 3DOM-SrTiO 3 /Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary composite photocatalysts exhibited notably enhanced activity compared with single 3DOM-SrTiO 3 and Ag 3 PO 4 catalyst. Among these ternary photocatalysts, S35A65(300) exhibited the most excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, which could be mainly attributed to synergy effect of the notably improved separate efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the suitable stop-bands of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) material. Although the gradually reduced activity in cycling tests was obtained over S35A65(300) under visible light irradiation, an excellent durability could be achieved for S35A65(300) under UV–vis light irradiation. No obvious loss in photocatalytic efficiency was observed after six cycles for RhB degradation. The notably improved enhanced durability of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 /Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 ternary composites under UV–vis light irradiation could be mainly attributed to the Z-scheme mechanism of this ternary composite photocatalyst.

Enhancement of photocatalytic activity of 2D/2D Sb2WO6/g-C3N4 Z-scheme heterojunction via effective interfacial charge transfer

Jinxin Liu,Jinyuan Liu,Qichang Peng,Bin Wang,Xingwang Zhu,Xue Gao,Huaming Li,Hui Xu,Paul K. Chu

A Z-scheme heterojunction is designed and demonstrated to enhance the separation efficiency of photocatalytic carriers. In this paper, the 2D/2D Sb 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 (SWO/CN) Z-scheme heterojunction fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly has better degradation activity than individual Sb 2 WO 6 and g-C 3 N 4 . The rate constant K (0.0194 min −1 ) of RhB degradation by 40 % SWO/CN was higher than that of Sb 2 WO 6 (0.0054 min −1 ) and g-C 3 N 4 (0.0039 min −1 ). The rate constant K of 40 % SWO/CN for MBT degradation was 0.4391 h −1 , which was 2.96 and 9.32 times that of g-C 3 N 4 (0.1484 h −1 ) and Sb 2 WO 6 (0.0471 h −1 ). The photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveal that the Z-scheme heterojunction facilitates the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and radical trapping experiments demonstrate the pivotal roles of holes (h + ), superoxide (·O₂ - ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂) in the catalytic degradation process. The results provide insights into the design of high-performance 2D/2D Z-scheme photocatalysts and a fundamental framework for further enhancement.

Improved CO2 Photoreduction Activity and Selectivity Using an Indirect Z-Scheme Heterojunction of ZIF-67 and Bi4O5Br2 Nanostructures

Yao Liu,Luotian Lv,Han Feng,Hao Liu,Yongqing Wang

Developing highly efficient photocatalysts for CO2 reduction is critical for addressing global warming and energy supply issues. However, both single-component metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and conventional semiconductor catalysts face significant challenges, such as severe charge recombination, poor CO2 adsorption capacity, and low utilization of solar energy in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2. To address these limitations, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst has been proved to be an effective way to suppress the recombination of photoinduced carriers. In this work, an indirect Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system, namely, Cu-doped-ZIF-67Co/Bi4O5Br2, is prepared by means of ion-doping and in situ growth strategy. Electrochemical characterization demonstrated the formation of p-type ZIF-67CoCu nanocubes and n-type Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets. The indirect Z-scheme band structure of the heterojunction was well-defined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Mott–Schottky test, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UV). The optimal Cu-doping ratio (molar ratio) and composite ratio (mass ratio): 1% ZIF-67CoCu(1:1)/Bi4O5Br2 exhibits excellent photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance, a remarkable rate of 6469.88 μmol·g–1·h–1, and a high CO selectivity of 97%. Compared to individual ZIF-67CoCu and Bi4O5Br2, the performance of reduction of CO2 to CO is improved by 4.19 and 8.64 times, respectively. Density functional theory calculations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results had shown that the existence of Cu in ZIF-67 facilitates the desorption of CO and the reduction process features the key CO* intermediate during the photoreduction of CO2 to CO on 1% ZIF-67CoCu/Bi4O5Br2. This study provides an exciting example for the design and understanding of the ion-doped MOFs and the semiconductor construction of indirect Z-scheme photocatalytic system for promoting photocatalytic capacity.

Insight into the Influence of Carbon on Core–Shell Structured Co-Z@TiO2 Catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Jinzhao Liu,Xinyu Chen,Hu Wang,Yun Chen,Liuliu Zhong,Chundong Zhang,Lei Wang,Hui Wan,Guofeng Guan

ZIF-67 derived cobalt-based catalysts have potential for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In this work, core–shell structured Co-Z@TiO2 catalysts with different graphitization degrees and carbon contents were handily prepared by adjusting the calcination process, using the ZIF-67 encapsulated by amorphous TiO2 as the precursor. By the protection effect of the residual carbon, the aggregation of cobalt species was suppressed. The dispersion and reducibility of the catalyst can be regulated by manipulating the type and amount of residual carbon. The Co-Z@TiO2 catalyst with proper carbon content exhibited high CO conversion (36.9%), C5+ selectivity (80.4%), and especially gasoline range hydrocarbons (49.3%). The catalyst also showed good stability during a 110 h reaction.

In situ construction of core-shell NiFe-LDH@ZnIn2S4 direct Z-scheme heterojunction for facilitating photocatalytic H2 evolution

Gaimei Gao,Mingyu Dou,Xiaojie Liu,Erkang Liu,Zixian Wang,Guang Yang,Hua Yang,Wenning Yang,Dacheng Li,Jianmin Dou

The development of photocatalysts with non-noble metals and the effective separation of photoexcited carriers is a significant strategy for accelerating surface reaction kinetics and promoting water splitting to produce H 2 . Herein, an exquisite core-shell NiFe-LDH@ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed by in situ decoration of ultrathin ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets on the surface of the flower-like NiFe-LDH microsphere . The synthesized 3D hierarchical NiFe@ZIS-25 composite exhibits enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution activity, reaching 9.12 mmol·h -1 ·g -1 , which is 2.52-fold higher than pure ZnIn 2 S 4 . The significant improvement in H 2 evolution performance could be attributed to the hierarchical core-shell structure of the NiFe@ZIS-25 photocatalyst, which enhanced the light capture ability. In addition, the interfacial coupling effect of ZnIn 2 S 4 and NiFe-LDH is beneficial to the migration of carriers. More importantly, the construction of Z-scheme heterojunction efficiently promotes the fast translation of photogenerated carriers while preserving a stronger reduction potential to achieve H 2 evolution. This work elucidates a rational strategy to develop efficient photocatalysts with hierarchical core-shell structures for water splitting.

In-situ construction of 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/BiOBr Z-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH3OH

Longting Qi,Yujing Xie,Jing Ding,Jinfeng Zhang,Hui Wan,Guofeng Guan

Bi 2 MoO 6 has drawn considerable attention in the field of photocatalysis owing to its excellent visible light response and photo-generated carriers transport ability. However, pure Bi 2 MoO 6 suffers from the limited surface-active sites and poor photogenerated charge separation efficiency, resulting in unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Herein, the 2D/2D Bi 2 MoO 6 /BiOBr Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized by in-situ hydrothermal growth of Bi 2 MoO 6 on BiOBr. The optimized heterojunction catalyst, Bi 2 MoO 6 /BiOBr-40 % exhibited a CH 3 OH yield of 6.21 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , which was twice that of the pure Bi 2 MoO 6 . Simultaneously, mechanism study by the band potential estimation and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis evidenced that the enhanced activity was ascribed to the Z-scheme. This unique structure could enhance the spatial separation of electron-hole pairs, remain the strong redox ability. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to further expose the charge transfer mechanism of composites. This paper provided a novel approach for the design and manufacture of 2D/2D Z-scheme heterojunctions for energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Dual MOF and CuInS2-Constructed Dual Z-Scheme Heterojunctions for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production and Methylene Blue Degradation

Yuning Liang,Baohui Wang,Tao Cheng,Mingchun Bi,Weimeng Chi,Yuxi Liu,Wenjing Zhang,Yuxuan Liu

A novel dual Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed by introducing the narrow-bandgap semiconductor CuInS2(CIS) into the dual metal-organic framework (MOF) system of UiO-66(Zr) and NH2-MIL-101(Fe). This structure effectively overcomes the limitations of conventional photocatalysts in terms of light absorption range and the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. The prepared ternary catalyst, (UiO-66(Zr))-(NH2-MIL-101(Fe))/CuInS2, exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, achieving a hydrogen production rate of 888 μmol g−1h−1and a methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency of up to 95.03%. The significant enhancement in performance is attributed to the material’s porous structure, extended light absorption range, and optimized electron transfer pathways. Additionally, the construction of the dual Z-scheme heterojunction further promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers, suppressing electron–hole recombination. This study demonstrates the great potential of dual Z-scheme heterojunctions in improving photocatalytic efficiency and provides an important theoretical foundation and design strategy for the development of efficient photocatalysts.

Lin Han,Liying Wen,Xiaoju Yue,Jinnong Wang,Yue Liu,Yuanhao Wang,Shifeng Wang

Water pollution, exacerbated by industrialization, poses severe threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health, particularly due to persistent organic pollutants like dyes. To mitigate this issue, the development of effective and sustainable water treatment technologies is essential. This study presents the synthesis of a novel bismuth vanadate (BVO)/vermiculite (Vt) adsorption-photocatalytic self-cycling composite using a simple hydrothermal method. The composite's Z -scheme heterojunction structure, along with the introduction of surface oxygen vacancies, significantly reduces electron-hole recombination and enhances charge separation. These modifications lead to a 1.64-fold increase in adsorption capacity compared to Vt and a 6.4-fold improvement in photocatalytic efficiency over BVO. The material maintained a 76 % removal efficiency after five usage cycles and demonstrated high efficacy in methylene blue (MB) solutions, even at concentrations up to 300 mg/L. Moreover, the composite displayed stable performance under repeated use and in high-pollutant environments, highlighting its durability and practicality. These characteristics underscore its strong potential for widespread application in environmental remediation and sustainable water resource management, offering an innovative solution to the global challenge of water pollution.

Slow-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 mediated by photonic crystal Graphdiyne-Cu/ZnO Z-scheme system

Yanhu Han,Zhaowei Jia,Wenxue Gong,Xuechun Wei,Yu Zhang,Mengying Tao,Yaofei Ren,Zuyi Lu,Yutong Wu,Jianhua Chen,Zhongfeng Shi,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

Developing photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity remains a significant challenge in the field of CO 2 photoreduction for producing valuable chemical or fuel products under mild conditions. Herein, photonic crystal (PC) GDY-Cu/ZnO was constructed through the in-situ induced growth of graphdiyne (GDY) on PC Cu/ZnO surface via H 2 -reduction for efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 . With the aid of photonic crystal structure, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO exhibits a distinctive red-edge slow light region which can significantly improve the utilization efficiency of visible light and intensify photo-catalysis. Additionally, the formed all-solid-state Z-scheme system efficiently accelerates photoelectron migration, facilitating e - /h + separation. Thirdly, the surface GDY, along with the enrich oxygen vacancies generated during H 2 reduction, enhances the adsorption and activation toward CO 2 and H 2 O on PC GDY-Cu/ZnO interface. In consequence, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO demonstrates highly photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 , achieving a CH 4 yield of 33.67 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 93.3 % selectivity via slow-light-driven photocatalysis CO 2 reduction. This work provides an efficient strategy to modify ZnO for the efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 .

Photocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Selective Products by Noble Metal-Free Z-Scheme Heterostructures α-Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S

Yuyang Wang,Chun Cai

It is a promising endeavor to explore the photocatalytic oxidation for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce high-value-added derivatives. The absence of efficient photocatalytic systems has hindered the transformation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), while DFF is susceptible to subsequent oxidation into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Herein, we design a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst α-Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S via hydrothermal methods, which exhibits superior activity toward the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF or FDCA in aqueous solution. Photocatalytic investigations demonstrated the highest activity for 15% Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S, resulting in a DFF selectivity of 99% and conversion of 75%, affording FDCA selectivity of 85% and conversion of 99%. The high catalytic activity has been ascribed to the effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in different atmospheres with the Z-scheme mechanism. Research revealed that the oxidation to DFF is associated with •OH in an Ar environment, while the generation of FDCA is related to •O2– in the air. Moreover, selective oxidation may also exhibit significant potential for the utilization of sunlight and other benzene substrates. Overall, this study offers a unique demonstration of designing a noble metal-free Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for the oxidation of HMF to selective products in water.
