The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a novel tanshinone IIA (TA)/chitosan (CS) solid dispersion (TA-CS-SD) to improve the bioavailability. Solid dispersion of tanshinone IIA with chitosan was prepared by a pH inversion method via the pH-responsive dissolution property of chitosan matrix. The in vitro dissolution study confirmed dramatically elevated dissolution rate of TA by solid dispersion approach, and the release mechanism exhibited pH-responsive performance. The solid dispersion was characterized by x-ray diffractometry (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results showed that TA existed in the form of microcrystal or superfine crystal in solid dispersion, and the reduction of crystallinity was correlated with the content of CS matrix. In vitro cytotoxicity study was performed in human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cell line by CCK-8 assay. Significant improvement in antitumor activity of TA in TA-CS-SD was achieved compared to the crystalline drug. These results indicated that, compared with free TA, TA-CS-SD demonstrated higher dissolution rate and bioactivity.

An injectable hydrogel dressing with multifunctional properties of superior hemostasis, antibacterial activity, tissue adhesive and cytocompatibility is desirable candidate in wound healing. In this study, we developed a novel hydrogel dressing composed of hydrophobically modified chitosan (hmCS) and oxidized dextran (OD). The gelation time, microstructure, injectability, self-healing and rheological properties were characterized. The in vitro ability of the precursor solution of the hydrogels to coagulate heparinized whole blood was confirmed. The in vivo hemostatic activity was demonstrated in a rat hemorrhaging liver model. The antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was evaluated in vitro through surface antibacterial test. The corresponding killing efficiencies were up to 95.0% and 96.4% at bacterial concentration of 10 8 CFU/mL. The cytotoxicity was examined by co-culturing with 3 T3 fibroblast cells. The wound healing functions were further verified with an infected wound model of rat skin. The aforementioned findings demonstrated that the hydrogel with multifunctional activities has potential for hemorrhagic and infected wound healing.

A series of chitosan-based flocculants have been successfully synthesized by grafting poly(acrylamide) (PAM) or poly(dimethyl acryloyloxyethyl benzyl ammonium chloride) (PDBC) onto chitosan (CS) molecular chain and then characterized by using multiple techniques. The synthesized CS-based flocculants were subsequently used to flocculate the emulsified oil droplets in simulated oily wastewater under various conditions. It was found that the PDBC-grafted CS (CS-g-PDBC) showed better flocculation performance than those of CS and two other commonly used flocculants, i.e. cationic PAM (CPAM) and polyaluminum chloride (PAC). Moreover, the flocculation efficiency of CS-g-PDBC was gradually enhanced with increasing grafting ratio of PDBC, while declined after the introduction of grafted PAM chains. The cationic and hydrophobic groups of PDBC could significantly promote the adsorption of flocculant molecular chains on the negatively charged oil droplets via electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction, thereby facilitating subsequent flocculation process. In addition to the adsorption bridging mechanism, zeta potentials measurements indicated that patching was the dominant mechanism under acidic and neutral conditions, while charge neutralization was the main mechanism under alkaline condition. On this basis, the chosen flocculant CS-g-PDBC was employed to treat the actual oily wastewater. Results showed that the removal ratio of both turbidity and oil exceeded 98%, suggesting that this newly synthesized CS-g-PDBC would be a promising flocculant for emulsified oily wastewater treatment.

Local administration of platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PGDF-BB) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in a sequential release manner could substantially promote bone healing. To achieve this goal, a delivery system that could sustain the release of PGDF-BB and BMP-2 by way of temporal separation was developed. One type of PGDF-BB-encapsulated alginate microsphere and another type of BMP-2-encapsulated microsphere with a core-shell structure were respectively produced using emulsification methods. These two types of microspheres were then embedded into chitosan/glycerophosphate hydrogel for constructing composite gels. Some of them were found to be injectable at ambient temperature and had thermo-sensitive features near physiological temperature and pH. The optimally formulated composite gels showed the ability to control the release of PGDF-BB and BMP-2 in a sequential fashion in which PDGF-BB was released earlier than BMP-2. In vitro release patterns indicated that the release rates could be significantly regulated by varying the embedded amount of the factor-encapsulated microspheres, which can in turn mediate the temporal separation release interval between PGDF-BB and BMP-2. The released PDGF-BB and BMP-2 were detected to be bioactive based on their respective effects on Balb/c 3T3 and C2C12 cells. These results suggest that the presently developed composite gels have the potential for bone repair by synergistically utilizing the early chemotactic effect of PDGF-BB and the subsequent osteogenic and angiogenic functions of PDGF-BB and BMP-2.Keywords:microspheres;growth factor;composite hydrogel;sequential delivery;platelet-derived growth factor-BB;bone morphogenetic protein-2

In the present investigation functional chitosan/silver nanocomposites (CS/Ag NCs) were successfully synthesized and found to possess favorable antibacterial activity against extended spectrum beta-lactasame (ESBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Powder X-ray diffraction showed that the obtained CS/Ag NCs are constituted of highly crystalline Ag nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in an amorphous CS matrix material. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis provided structural information about CS/Ag NCs, revealing the formation of spherical cluster structures constituted of Ag NPs with size ranging from 6 to 18 nm embedded in the amorphous CS matrix. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Ag NPs and CS/Ag NCs were found to inhibit the ESBL producing P. aeruginosa at 80 μg/mL (76%) and 50 μg/mL (92%), respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that P. aeruginosa experienced reduced cell viability and morphological cell membrane damage at desired MIC. The in-vivo toxicity effect of Ag NPs and CS/Ag NCs suggested an increased mortality rate when Artemia franciscana were exposed for 24 h to increasing concentrations of Ag NPs and CS/Ag NCs. Anti-ESBL activity and toxicity effect of CS/Ag NCs revealed that these NCs possess promising antibacterial properties to overcome numerous communicable bacterial strains .

Designing tough biopolymer-based hydrogels as structural biomaterials has both scientific and practical significances. We report a facile approach to prepare polysaccharide-based hydrogel films with remarkable mechanical performances and antiadhesion property. The hydrogel films with a thickness of 40–60 μm were prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of κ-carrageenan (κ-CG) and protonated chitosan (CS), evaporating the solvent, and then swelling the casted film in water to achieve the equilibrium state. The obtained κ-CG/CS gel films with a water content of 48–88 wt % possessed excellent mechanical properties with a breaking stress of 2–6.7 MPa and a breaking strain of 80–120%, superior to the most existing biopolymer-based hydrogels. The extraordinary mechanical properties of gel films obtained over a wide range of mass ratio of κ-CG to CS should be rooted in the synergistic effect of ionic and hydrogen bonds between the κ-CG and CS molecules. In addition, the tough gel films showed good self-recovery ability, biocompatibility, and cell antiadhesion property, making them promising as an artificial dura mater and diaphragm materials in the surgery. The design principle by incorporating multiple noncovalent bonds to toughen the biopolymer-based hydrogels should be applicable to other systems toward structural biomaterials with versatile properties.

In the present study, novel cellulose and chitosan composite hydrogels and films were constructed by directly dissolving cellulose and chitosan in alkali/urea aqueous solutions followed by a facile blending method and a mild coagulation process in an ethyl acetate gaseous phase. The structure and properties of the cellulose/chitosan composite materials were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, wide angle X-ray diffraction, mechanical test and antibacterial experiment etc. The results indicated that there is strong hydrogen bonding interaction between cellulose and chitosan. The composite hydrogels exhibited homogeneous porous structure and the resultant films exhibited relative high light transmittance, indicating good miscibility between cellulose and chitosan due to their structure similarity. The mechanical strength increased with the cellulose content for the composite films, while the equilibrium swelling ratio, antibacterial activity and biocompatibility increased with the chitosan content. Facial mask shaped composite hydrogels with heavy metal ion adsorbability could be prepared facilely by using glass molds. Thus, the composite materials showed potential applications in the facial mask, antimicrobial packaging and water treatment fields.

In this study, chitosan and lanthanum hydroxide composite aerogel beads were prepared for phosphorus adsorption via co precipitation and supercritical carbon dioxide drying technique. The porous structure of composite aerogel beads was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements. The results showed that the aerogel bead with mass ratio of chitosan to lanthanum chloride 100:50 exhibited a larger surface area of 172.74 m 2 /g and a pore volume of 1.05 cm 3 /g, respectively. Also the phosphorus adsorption kinetics of the aerogel bead showed a faster adsorption rate and the larger adsorption capacity (148.33 mg/g) for phosphorus. In addition, adsorption kinetics model analysis showed that the phosphorus adsorption process fitted both pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order kinetic model.

The relatively low density of functional groups of graphene oxide (GO) and the difficulty to completely recover after adsorption limit its application in uranium (U(VI)) removal from aqueous solution. Inspired by a special chemical property, polydopamine (PDA) was first used as a surface modifying agent for GO, and then the as-formed GO@PDA cross-linked with chitosan (CS) to assemble a three-dimensional (3D) porous GO@PDA/CS aerogel for U(VI) adsorption. Morphology and structure of the aerogel were characterized by TEM, SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD, Raman, and TGA. The results show that compared to GO/CS, the GO@PDA/CS aerogel possesses a more homogeneous and well-organized 3D porous structure as well as the enhanced active sites, which are beneficial for U(VI) removal. According to batch experiments, the adsorption rate of the GO@PDA/CS aerogel was very fast, and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached in 15 min at pH = 6.0. Its maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) is as high as 415.9 mg g–1 at 298 K calculated from the Langmuir model. In addition, the as-prepared GO@PDA/CS aerogel exhibits satisfactory thermal and mechanical stability and could be recycled six times without an apparent decrease in removal efficiency.

Traditional ink owning harmful components has caused many problems, so this paper developed chitosan-TiO 2 edible inks and used it as the model to study the relationship between rheology and printing, for better development of edible inks. Rheological properties and the corresponding fitting were investigated. The developed ink exhibited non-Newtonian behavior, shear-thinning behavior, and temperature-dependent properties. Shear strain, frequency and temperature had great impact on modulus of inks. Low J ( t ) (compliance) values reflected strong material structure and the related final recovery ratio attained 65.9%. Based on the fitting results, the screen-printing simulation were further researched for closer practical application. The recovery rate reached 55% with high initial recovery coefficient (K 3 = 10.7), indicating that the ink recovered sooner to the high viscosity after the shear was released and was suitable for printing. The ink was also printed on coated paper. Fastness was up to 91% and scratch resistance achieved H. The print effect on black cardboard and PET film was also excellent. The prepared edible ink provides a novel alternative to traditional ink and holds great potential in printing industry, especially on food.

Absorption is one of the most important methods for oil spill cleanup. An ideal absorbent is expected to possess advantages of low cost, green, high absorption capacity and excellent reusability. In this paper, a new kind of cellulose aerogel was successfully fabricated via cellulose oxidation, crosslinking, freeze drying and cold plasma modification. The obtained aerogel (water contact angle up to 152.8°) exhibited outstanding oil/water selectivity and high absorption capacity (13.77–28.20 g/g) for various oils and organic solvents. What's more, this kind of aerogel could be reused by simple compression. The absorption-desorption process could be repeated for at least 50 cycles. Through the kinetic analysis, it was found that the pseudo-second order model was more appropriate for the aerogel’s oil absorption process. Owing to its low cost, hydrophobicity, high absorption capacity and excellent reusability, this kind of aerogel is expected to be used in oils and organic solvents spill cleanup and oil/water separation field.

The photosensitizer Chlorin e6 (Ce6) has been frequently employed for photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer; however, its nonspecific toxicity has limited its clinical applications. In this study, we prepared chitosan nanoparticles (CNPs), with a mean diameter of approximately 130 nm, by a nonsolvent-aided counterion complexation method in an aqueous solution, into which Ce6 could be physically entrapped during the preparation process. These CNPs and Ce6-loaded CNPs (CNPs-Ce6) were fully characterized by UV–vis, photoluminescence, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis, as well as dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy measurements. More importantly, the biocompatibility of the otherwise toxic Ce6 was significantly improved upon its loading into the CNPs, as demonstrated by both confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. Furthermore, the PDT efficiency of Ce6-loaded CNPs was dramatically enhanced, in comparison with that of the free Ce6, as shown by both MTT and flow cytometry assays. This discovery provides a novel strategy for improving the biocompatibility and therapeutic efficacy of PDT agents by using a natural, biocompatible polysaccharide carrier.
