A novel study for joint toxicity of typical aromatic compounds in coal pyrolysis wastewater by Tetrahymena thermophile

Mengqi Zheng,Hongjun Han,Chunyan Xu,Zhengwen Zhang,Wencheng Ma

The coal pyrolysis wastewater (CPW) contributed to aquatic environment contamination with amount of aromatic pollutants, and the research on joint toxicity of the mixture of aromatic compounds was vital for environmental protection. By using Tetrahymena thermophile as non-target organism, the joint toxicity of typical nonpolar narcotics and polar narcotics in CPW was investigated. The results demonstrated that the nonpolar narcotics exerted chronic and reversible toxicity by hydrophobicity-based membrane perturbation, while polar narcotics performed acute toxicity by irreversible damage of cells. As the most hydrophobic nonpolar narcotics, indole and naphthalene caused the highest joint toxicity in 24 h with the lowest EC 50mix (24.93 mg/L). For phenolic compounds, the combination of p-cresol and p-nitrophenol also showed the top toxicity (EC 50mix = 10.9 mg/L) with relation to high hydrophobicity, and the joint toxicity was obviously stronger and more acute than that of nonpolar narcotics. Furthermore, by studying the joint toxicity of nonpolar narcotics and polar narcotics, the hydrophobicity-based membrane perturbation was the first step of toxicity effects, and afterwards the acute toxicity induced by electrophilic polar substituents of phenols dominated joint toxicity afterwards. This toxicity investigation was critical for understanding universal and specific effects of CPW to aquatic organisms.

Co-pyrolysis of cyanobacteria and plastics to synthesize porous carbon and its application in methylene blue adsorption

Lixin Li,Jie Wang,Chao Jia,Ying Lv,Yan Liu

Cyanobacteria and plastics, as the two major problems of the water environment crisis, need to be solved urgently. In particular, there is no reasonable method for simultaneously treating these wastes and recovering useful resources from them. Therefore, the mixture of cyanobacteria and polypropylene (PP) plastics is directly pyrolyzed at different activation conditions to synthesize the composite carbon (CPC) materials, which have excellent performance in water contaminant removal. The result indicates that the added PP is beneficial to improve the properties of CPC material, increasing its specific surface area and pore volume (up to 2811 m 2 /g and 1.992 cm 3 /g, respectively). The application performance of CPC materials is mainly determined by the surface area and pore volume. Therefore, the CPC materials exhibit a higher methylene blue (MB) adsorption (maximum 490 mg/g). This paper provides a new strategy for recycling wastes from water environment and new ideas for synthesizing high-performance composite materials.

Effect of Pd loading on ZrO2 support resulting from pyrolysis of UiO-66: Application to CO oxidation

Fukun Bi,Xiaodong Zhang,Shang Xiang,Yunyun Wang

The effect of Pd loading (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 wt%) and ZrO 2 support calcined at diverse temperatures (600, 700 and 800 °C) by pyrolysis of UiO-66 was investigated for CO oxidation in this work, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized by various characterization methods. The XRD results exhibited that all ZrO 2 support possessed mixed crystalline phase, the monoclinic ZrO 2 and tetragonal ZrO 2 . And the calcination temperature had a big impact on the composition of ZrO 2 supports. Pyrolysis of UiO-66 at high temperature was favorable for the formation of monoclinic ZrO 2 . Additionally, the introduction of Pd was induced the phase conversion from tetragonal to monoclinic of ZrO 2 . The order of catalytic efficiency was as follows: 0.5Pd/Zr-700 > 0.5Pd/Zr-600 > 0.5Pd/Zr-800. Moreover, 0.5Pd/Zr-700 presented high stability and great reusability. The good catalytic performance of 0.5Pd/Zr-700 was ascribed to the better reduction ability at low temperature and high O ads /O lat and Pd 0 /Pd 2+ on the surface. Importantly, the reaction pathway of CO oxidation over the 0.5Pd/Zr-700 was exposed.

Molecular shape selectivity of HZSM-5 in catalytic conversion of biomass pyrolysis vapors: The effective pore size

Changsong Hu,Huiyan Zhang,Shiliang Wu,Rui Xiao

This article is intended to deepen the understanding of molecular shape selectivity of HZSM-5 in catalytic conversion of biomass pyrolysis vapors through the study of catalyst effective pore size. Ex-situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass over HZSM-5 with varied catalyst loadings were carried out using a continuous feeding two-stage fluidized-bed/fixed-bed combination reactor. Results showed that in addition to the shape selective reactions inside catalyst channels, cracking and aggregating reactions occur at the external surface of HZSM-5. The catalytic activity of HZSM-5 external surface for some heavy compounds was observed to be relatively low. On the basis of the molecular dimension information provided by quantum chemical calculations, it was found that HZSM-5 has an effective pore size which is significantly larger than its static pore size at CFP temperature. Catalytic alkylation of naphthalene with methanol over HZSM-5, HZSM-5@silicalite-1, HSAPO-34, HM, Hβ, HUSY and HMCM-41 were further compared to determine the effective pore size of HZSM-5. It is proposed that the effective pore size of HZSM-5 at CFP temperature is between the critical molecular diameters of 2,3- and 1,6-dimethylnaphthalene (between 7.520 and 7.961 Å).

CeO2-Supported Pt Catalysts Derived from MOFs by Two Pyrolysis Strategies to Improve the Oxygen Activation Ability

Xueqing Zhu,Hui He,Yanxia Li,Haoyuan Wu,Mingli Fu,Daiqi Ye,Junliang Wu,Haomin Huang,Yun Hu,Xiaojun Niu

Functional metal organic framework (MOF) derivatives have attracted tremendous attention as promising catalysts for various reactions. The thermal decomposition strategies have a vital effect on the structures and physicochemical properties of functional MOF derivatives. Nevertheless, what effect does the pyrolysis strategy have on MOF derivatives need further study. In this work, one-step (under dry air) and two-step (first under N2and then dry air) pyrolysis are chosen to prepare the functional ceria-based MOF derivatives with novel hierarchical pore structure. In comparison with the derivatives prepared by one-step pyrolysis, the two-step pyrolysis composites exhibit better catalytic activity for toluene oxidation due to the higher contents of surface absorbed oxygen species and surface oxygen vacancies. The reusability and durability test demonstrates perfect stability of such functional MOF derivatives. The in-situ UV Raman reveals that two-step strategy is favorable for enhancing the gaseous oxygen activation ability of the functional MOF derivatives. Those findings may instruct the synthesis of functional MOF derivatives via different pyrolysis strategies as well as afford a further understanding of the crucial role of oxygen vacancies. Keywords:metal organic frameworks;functional derivatives;pyrolysis strategies;toluene oxidation;oxygen activation abilities

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on lithium storage performance of pyrolitic-PVDF coated hard carbon derived from cellulose

Lingfang Li,Changling Fan,Bin Zeng,Muchu Tan

The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the electrochemical performance of cellulose-derived hard carbon as anode material for lithium ion batteries was discussed in detail. Because of the presence of more oxygen-containing groups, the hard carbon pyrolyzed below 700 °C has larger irreversible capacity. The initial coulombic efficiency is low and the capacity decreases rapidly. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)results show that the ratio of C O to C–O bond becomes very small when higher than 800 °C, most of the oxygen-containing groups and hydrogen disappears. Hard carbon obtained at 1100 °C has higher initial coulombic efficiency and better cycle performance, no voltage hysteresis exists. The number of micropores of HC-1100 is much larger than that of mesopores, which reduces the irreversible deposition of lithium ions in mesopores. However, due to the decrease of interlayer space, lithium storage sites become less and the capacity is a bit lower than HC-800 and HC-950. The hard carbon obtained in 800–1000 °C range has the best comprehensive performance in charge-discharge capacity, initial coulombic efficiency and cycle performance.

A facile pyrolysis synthesis of biochar/ZnO passivator: immobilization behavior and mechanisms for Cu (II) in soil

Wang Ying,Wang Luxing,Deng Xiaoyan,Gao Hongtao

Waste biomass can be recycled to prepare biochar for soil restoration, in which process soil fertility would not be lost. In this work, biochar was prepared from waste pomelo peel, combined with ZnO, to be used to immobilize Cu(II) in contaminated soil, whose maximum adsorption capacity was up to 216.37 mg g −1 . Due to combination of ZnO, the BET surface area of biochar increased from 2.39 to 18.53 m 2 g −1 . Meanwhile, the surface functional groups increased, which was conducive to fixation of metal ion on the surface of biochar. Both pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm model fit the experimental data well. Adsorption was easy to happen since the adsorption site on the surface of biochar/ZnO had a strong affinity with Cu(II). In addition, mechanism investigation indicated that Cu(II) was bond with biochar/ZnO mainly by non-bioavailable state (75.6%) primarily. It inferred that biochar/ZnO was an efficient and promising passivator in reducing heavy metal risk in soil.

Performance of Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis Using a γ-Al2O3 Catalyst with Compound Modification of ZrO2 and CeO2

Zeyu Xue,Zhaoping Zhong,Bo Zhang,Chao Xu

To investigate the catalytic pyrolysis performance of complex metal oxide catalysts for biomass, γ-Al2O3was prepared through the precipitation method, and then ZrO2and γ-Al2O3were blended in the proportion of 2:8 using the co-precipitation method. Next, CeO2was loaded on the surface of the catalyst for further modification. The three catalysts, A, ZA and CZA, were obtained. The specific surface and acidity of the catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption–desorption and NH3-Temperature Programmed Desorption (NH3-TPD) respectively. The catalytic pyrolysis performance of catalysts for bamboo residues was investigated by Pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Chromatograms were analyzed for identification of the pyrolysis products and the relative amounts of each component were calculated. Experimental results indicated that catalyst A had a good catalytic activity for the fast pyrolysis of bamboo residues. The addition of ZrO2and CeO2could continuously enhance the acidity of the catalyst and further promote the pyrolysis of macromolecular compounds and deoxidation of oxygen-containing compounds. Finally, catalyst CZA, obtained by compound modification, could not only dramatically reduce the relative content of phenol, acid and aldehyde and other oxygen-containing compounds, but also achieved the maximum hydrocarbon yield of 23.38%. The catalytic performance of catalyst CZA improved significantly compared with catalyst A.Keywords:biomass;pyrolysis;catalytic cracking;Py-GC/MS;complex metal oxides

Mn/TiO2 catalysts prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method for NOx removal in low-temperature SCR reaction

Boqiong Jiang,Beilong Lin,Zhiguo Li,Shuang Zhao,Ziying Chen

A series of Mn/TiO 2 catalysts were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx from flue gas at low temperatures. The highest activity of Mn/TiO 2 was obtained with a Mn/Ti ratio of 0.5. When Fe was doped into Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , the NOx conversion rate on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 was increased by approximately 10 % at 120–180 °C. The samples were characterized by XRD , SEM , H 2 -TPR, and N 2 adsorption analyses. Results revealed that Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 with Mn/Ti ratio of 0.5 presented the lowest crystallinity , the highest surface area, and the highest redox ability. Although the surface area was significantly decreased by Fe doping, it also reduced the crystallinity and crystal size of the catalysts, thereby increasing the O concentration on the surface of catalyst. Moreover, Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 displayed a higher redox ability than the other catalysts. At 120–240 °C, the activation energy decreased from 27.65 kJ/mol on Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 to 14.46 kJ/mol on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , thereby facilitating the activation of the reaction on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 . Despite that the NO and NH 3 adsorptions were lower on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 than on Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , the intermediates on Fe(0.05)-Mn(0.5)/TiO 2 , particularly nitrates, were easily activated to participate in the reaction, leading to increasing catalytic activity.

Components Interaction of Cotton Stalk under Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Conversion: A Bio-Oil Pyrolysis Behavior Perspective Analysis

Xiao Yang,Naihao Chen,Shengbo Ge,Yequan Sheng,Kun Yang,Pengmusen Lin,Xuqiang Guo,Su Shiung Lam,Hui Ming,Libo Zhang

The conversion of agricultural and forestry waste biomass materials into bio-oil by mild hydro-thermal technology has a positive effect on extending the agricultural industry chain and alleviating the world energy crisis. The interaction investigation of biomass components during bio-oil formation can be significant for the efficient conversion of lignocellulose when different raw materials are fed together. In this paper, a bio-oil pyrolysis behavior (thermogravimetric analysis, TG) perspective component interaction investigation of cotton stalks under low-temperature hydro-thermal conversion (220 °C) was studied. Cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignin, and protein were used as lignocellulose model components, by their simple binary blending and multi-variate blending and combined with thermo-gravimetric analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) characterization and analysis. The interaction of different model components and real biomass raw material components in the hydro-thermal process was explored. Results showed that the components of hydro-thermal bio-oil from cotton stalks were highly correlated with the interactions between cellulose, hemi-cellulose, lignin, and protein. During the hydro-thermal process, cellulose and hemi-cellulose inhibit each other, which reduces the content of ketones, aldehydes, ethers, and alcohols in bio-oil. Interaction between cellulose and lignin was obvious, which promotes the formation of oligomers, such as ketones, aldehydes, esters, phenols, and aliphatic, while inhibiting the production of aromatic and multi-hybrid compounds. Otherwise, there was no obvious interaction effect between hemi-cellulose and lignin or between lignin and protein. This research will guide the industrialization of lignocellulose, especially the possible co-feed hydro-thermal conversion technology.Keywords:bio-oil;cotton stalk;hydro-thermal liquefaction;interaction;multi-variate blending

Effects of microwave and plastic content on the sulfur migration during co–pyrolysis of biomass and plastic

Jiaman Sun,Juan Luo,Rui Ma,Junhao Lin,Lin Fang

In order to reduce the risks of sulfur-containing contaminants present in biofuels, the effects of microwave and content of hydrogen donor on the cracking of C–S bonds and the migration of sulfur were studied by co–pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic mechanism of microwave and hydrogen donor was explored from the perspective of deducing the evolution of sulfur–containing compounds based on microwave thermogravimetric analysis . By combining temperature–weight curves, it was found that microwaves and hydrogen radicals promoted the cracking of sulfur–containing compounds and increased the mass loss of biomass during pyrolysis . The mixing ratio of hydrogen donor (plastic) was the key parameter resulting in the removal of sulfur from oil. By adjusting the mixing ratio, the yield of co–pyrolyzed oil was three times higher than that of cow dung pyrolysis alone and the relative removal rate of sulfur reached 73.67%. The relative content of sulfur in the oil was reduced by 73.77% due to the escape of sulfur–containing gases (H 2 S, COS and C 2 H 5 SH) and the formation of sulfate crystals in the char. Microwave selectively heated sulfur–containing organics and hydrogen radicals stimulated the breaking of C–S bonds, which improved the cracking efficiency of the oil. This breaking will provide a theoretical and technological reference for the environmentally friendly treatment of biomass and biofuels.

Fabrication of NiZn bimetallic oxides catalysts supported on carbon black waste for catalytic pyrolysis of fatty acid

Yang Zhang,Xuwen Zhang,Fangsong Guo,Kok Bing Tan,Youting Wang,Kang Sun,Xiaoping Rao,Xiaodong Zhang,Guowu Zhan

Herein, NiZn bimetallic oxides derived from calcination treatment of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were successfully loaded onto the carbon black waste as support obtained from the oil refinery. The resulting hybrids could serve as environmentally friendly and cost-effective catalysts for the deoxygenation of biomass-derived fatty acids under an inert atmosphere. An online pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) system was employed to evaluate their deoxygenation performance. The optimized catalysts demonstrated remarkably high stearic acid conversion of 99.6% and selectivity towards C8-C17 olefins of 57.2%. Furthermore, these catalysts with varying metal loadings also exhibited excellent efficiency in deoxygenation reactions of other types of fatty acids, such as myristic acid and palmitic acid , achieving conversion exceeding 85% and selectivities towards olefins of ca. 50%. When converting coconut oil, the supported NiZn bimetallic oxides showed excellent selectivity towards olefins (>60%). Furthermore, in-situ DRIFTS results suggest that fatty alcohols might be the key intermediates in the deoxidation reactions of fatty acid. This study not only demonstrates the great potential for obtaining valuable chemicals from biomass but also provides some insights into the fabrication of catalyst materials by using industrial solid waste.
