A multifunctional ZnO-ZIF-8/bamboo composite with enhanced adsorption capacity and improved flame retardancy

Gang Zhu,Hui Li,Shuduan Deng,Chaoling Zhang,Kunyong Kang

Construction of metal oxide nanoparticles on ZIF-8 has produced many novel hybrid materials with interesting properties, of which ZnO-ZIF-8 is a typical representative. However, due to the powdered crystalline state of ZnO-ZIF-8 hybrid materials, their processability and handling remain a significant challenge. In this work, a multifunctional ZnO-ZIF-8/bamboo composite was successfully fabricated through in-situ growth of spherical ZnO-ZIF-8 hybrid nanoparticles within natural bamboo substrates. At a 6.8 wt% ZnO-ZIF-8 loading, the resulting composite displays highly removal efficiency up to 97.6% for methylene blue (MB) and the adsorption capacity can reach 226.7 mg·g−1 at 298 K. The MB removal efficiency dropped to 96.0% after five cycles, revealing the composite exhibited an excellent recyclability. Furthermore, the introduction of ZnO-ZIF-8 remarkably enhanced the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the natural bamboo. Compared with the untreated natural bamboo, the peak of heat release rate of the ZnO-ZIF-8/bamboo composite exhibited a drastic decline by 61.6% from 45.3 W·g−1 to 17.4 W·g−1 and the total heat release from 7.6 kJ·g−1 to 4.4 kJ·g−1. This work offers a new avenues for designing and constructing functionalized MOFs@bamboo composite that may boost their environmental- and green building-related applications.

Microfluidic formulation of anticancer peptide loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles for the treatment of breast cancer

Jinguo Qiu,Mhd Anas Tomeh,Yi Jin,Bo Zhang,Xiubo Zhao

Anticancer peptides (ACPs) are promising antitumor drugs owning to their great cancer cell targeting and anticancer effects as well as low drug resistance. However, many of the ACPs have non-specific toxicity and can be easily degraded by the enzymes after administration. Therefore, drug delivery systems (DDSs) are required to shield these peptides from degradation and induce targeted delivery. In this paper, a high performance microfluidic device was used to fabricate the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) encapsulating an ACP (At3) recently developed by our group. The microfluidic device allowed for efficient and rapid mixing to generate ACP loaded nanoparticles (NPs) with controllable properties at high production rate (120 mL/min) and high encapsulation efficiency. The ZIF-8 NPs synthesised by microfluidic processing showed lower polydispersity index (PDI) than the conventional method, demonstrating an improved size uniformity. Encapsulating At3 into the ZIF-8 ( [email protected] ) significantly reduced the hemolytic effect and provided a pH-controlled release of At3 peptide. [email protected] showed higher anticancer effect than the unloaded peptide at the same concentration due to the enhanced cell uptake by the ZIF-8 NPs. The NPs were able to inhibit the growth of the multicellular tumour spheroids (MCTSs) and damage the mitochondrial membrane of the MCF-7 breast cancer cells. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the [email protected] NPs inhibited the growth of MCF-7 tumours in nude mice without changing the biochemical properties of the blood or the histopathological properties of vital organs. Therefore, the development of At3 loaded NPs provides an alternative approach in ACP delivery which can broaden the application of ACP-based cancer therapy.

ZIF-8 modified graphene oxide/sodium alginate 3D elastic spheres for uranium trapping in seawater

Xue Chang,PeiZhuo Hu,Huiling Liu,Zixiao Lv,Jingyi Yang,Jianli Wang,Zhan Li,Lijuan Qian,Wangsuo Wu

Due to the popularization of nuclear energy and the application of nuclear technology , there is an increasing demand for uranium resources. Extraction of uranium from seawater has become a hot topic. To achieve uranium capture, a three-dimensional carbon structure material (GO/ZIF-8@SA) with ionic stress elastic expansion consisting of graphene oxide, ZIF-8 and sodium alginate was developed. Surface morphological characteristics and elemental composition evaluation were determined by using SEM. The doping concentration of the elements in the synthesized products was measured by EDS. XRD, FT-IR and XPS confirmed the successful doping of ZIF-8. In seawater spiked with uranium, GO/ZIF-8@SA showed not only an ultra-high adsorption capacity of 1897 mg·g −1 for U(VI), but also a high selectivity . Interestingly, the volume of GO/ZIF-8@SA can be elastically expanded with the adsorption of U(VI). The expanded microspheres can be directly captured from the seawater by the mesh sieve. GO/ZIF-8@SA solves the problem of balancing adsorption capacity and selectivity in a complex seawater environment, which gives it great potential for application in seawater uranium extraction.

Enhanced CO2 separation performance by incorporating KAUST-8 nanosheets into crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) membrane

Rujing Hou,Shilong Wang,Lei Wang,Chang Li,Huan Wang,Yingtian Xu,Chongqing Wang,Yichang Pan,Weihong Xing

The trade-off relationship between permeability and selectivity as well as plasticization issues have largely impeded the advancement of membrane technology. Mixed-matrix-membranes (MMMs) with the incorporation of fillers into the polymer matrix is one promising method to deal with these challenges by carefully tuning their chemical properties. Compared with nanoparticles, the counterpart of nanosheet has a larger external surface area with a tendency to have closer contact with a polymer matrix to form a defect-free membrane at higher loading. This work successfully synthesized a high aspect ratio (30/1) of KAUST-8 nanosheets with high CO 2 uptake (60 cm 3 /g). This enables an optimal loading of 30 wt.% in the CO 2 -attractive crosslinked poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) membrane and results in the simultaneously enhanced CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity with 280 % and 30 % up, respectively in the mixed gas permeation measurements (50/50 vol.). The resultant membrane performance surpassed the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Meanwhile, the stabilized MMM performance of up to 6 bar and high thermal stability of up to 350 °C bring extra benefits to the KAUST-8-based XLPEO membrane for post-combustion flue gas treatment.

Preparation of PEG/ZIF-8@HF drug delivery system for melanoma treatment via oral administration

Luxi Peng,Jiajun Qiu,Lidan Liu,Xiaoyu Li,Xuanyong Liu,Yongjun Zhang

Melanoma is one of the highly malignant tumors whose incidence and fatality rates have been increased year by year. However, in addition to early surgical resection, there still lacks specific targeted drugs and treatment strategies. In this study, it was discovered that hinokiflavone (HF) encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) exhibited a superior anti-melanoma effect in vitro and in vivo. HF was encapsulated in ZIF-8 through a one-step synthesis method, and polyethylene glycol (PEG-2000) was used to optimize the size and dispersion of the drug-loaded complex (PEG/ZIF-8@HF). The results show that the prepared PEG/ZIF-8@HF has a high encapsulation efficiency (92.12%) and can achieve selective drug release in an acidic microenvironment. The results of in vitro anti-melanoma experiments indicate that PEG/ZIF-8@HF shows up-regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and can restrain the migration and invasion of B16F10 cells. Moreover, in vivo animal experiments further confirm that PEG/ZIF-8@HF shows anti-tumor effect by up-regulating the pro-apoptotic proteins caspase-3 and caspase-8, and down-regulating the migration-promoting invasion protein MMP-9. This study developed a safe and effective oral administration of HF based on the high-efficiency delivery ZIF-8 system, which provides an effective treatment strategy for melanoma.

Micro/nanostructured ZIF-8/CeO2 composite as an efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition of CO2

Hu Lihua,Chen Li,Mo Xiaohong,Peng Xiong,Xu Wei,Liu Feng,Yan Zongcheng

For the effective utilization of carbon resources, a facile and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst system with high reactivity and stability is urgently needed for chemical fixation of CO 2 . Herein, a micro/nanostructured ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite was designed by direct surface-nucleated ZIF-8 nanoparticles on spindle-like CeO 2 . The ZIF-8 nanoparticles content of the ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite could be tuned by the changing of reaction parameters, such as the molar ratio of reactants and the reaction time. The ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite exhibits remarkably enhanced catalytic activity and superior reusability for cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 and epoxide than its pure substance. The enhanced performance of ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite should be attributed to its high specific surface area and abundant porosity, outstanding thermal stability, and the appearance of a new moderate acid/base site in composite material. Considering the convenient preparation, enhanced catalytic activity and excellent reusability of ZIF-8/CeO 2 composite, this work offers a new strategy to replace ZIFs-based porous catalysts for chemical fixation of CO 2 .

Supermolecular nanovehicles co-delivering TLR7/8-agonist and anti-CD47 siRNA for enhanced tumor immunotherapy

Tongyi Shang,Xinying Yu,Yuan Gu,Rong Du,Yanjun Cai,Yuwei Li,Guodong Zheng,Chaoqun Wang,Jian Zhang,Jifang Liu,Shisong Han,Bin Yang

Cancer immunotherapy is the most promising method for tumor therapy in recent years, among which the macrophages play a critical role in the antitumor immune response. However, tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) usually display the tumor-promoting M2 phenotype rather than the tumor-killing M1 phenotype. Moreover, the over-expressed CD47 on tumor cells severely hinders the function of macrophages by blocking the CD47/SIRPα pathway. Herein, a nano-assembly system of CHTR/siRNA was constructed through the host-guest interaction of a hyperbranched amino-functionalized β-cyclodextrin and immune agonist imiquimod (R848), while CD47 siRNA was loaded inside through electrostatic interaction. The Toll-like receptor (TLR) 7/8 agonist R848 can “re-educate” macrophages from the protumoral M2 phenotype to antitumoral M1 phenotype, while CD47 siRNA can down-regulate the “don't eat me” CD47 signal on the surface of cancer cells and enhance the phagocytosis of cancer cells by macrophages. Through the dual regulation of TAMs, the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment was relieved, and the host-guest drug-carrying system resulted in synergistic immunotherapy effect on tumors and inhibited tumor growth. The facile self-assembly of nanodrug offers a new strategy in co-delivery of multiple therapeutic agents for cascade cancer immunotherapy.

Excellent performance of 8-hydroxyquinoline and alkyl polyglycolides hybrid electrolyte additives on aluminum-air battery

Wenyue Zhang,Shaokun Cai,Daquan Zhang,Lixin Gao

We examine 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and decyl glucoside (DG) as hybrid additives to inhibit the corrosion of Al-5052 anode in sodium hydroxide solution. The gas evolution experiment, electrochemical measurements, morphological and spectral analysis, ellipsometer, as well as simulating computation are used to investigate the corrosion inhibition strengthening mechanism. It demonstrates that 8-HQ can coordinate with Al 3+ ions to form complex film. DG can assemble on the complex film to improve the corrosion inhibition performance through “micelle solubilization”. The optimum corrosion protection efficiency is 83.7% for 10 mM 8-HQ + 3 mM DG.

Mesopore engineering of ZIF-8 by [Bmim][Tf2N] positioning into nanocage for enhanced CO2 capture

Wenji Zheng,Ziheng Li,Yan Dai,Xiangcun Li,Xuehua Ruan,Xiaobin Jiang,Xiujuan Zhang,Gaohong He

The regulation on cage size and CO 2 -philic environment of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is essential to improve CO 2 capture. In this work, [Bmim][Tf 2 N] was proposed to position into cages of ZIF-8 to achieve the selective permeation of CO 2 by pore screening and CO 2 adsorption. [Bmim][Tf 2 N] was introduced into cages of ZIF-8 by “adsorption-infiltration” strategy. Due to the strong interaction between [Tf 2 N] − and ZIF-8, the cages present a CO 2 -philic environment, which preferentially attracts CO 2 to enter these cages, ensuring the dissolution selectivity of CO 2 . Besides, the proper cage size tuned by [Bmim][Tf 2 N] provides CO 2 with a faster transport channel due to its smaller average kinetic diameter than N 2 , guaranteeing the diffusion selectivity of CO 2 . Consequently, the CO 2 separation in [Bmim][Tf 2 N]@ZIF-8/Pebax MMMs is intensified. With increasing the [Bmim][Tf 2 N] content in cages of ZIF-8, the pore volume by BET results decreases and the CO 2 adsorption from molecular simulation increases. In response, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of [Bmim][Tf 2 N]@ZIF-8/Pebax MMMs is enhanced constantly. Meanwhile, the CO 2 permeability is declined due to the narrowed cage size. All of these results demonstrate the significance of pore screening and CO 2 adsorption induced by [Bmim][Tf 2 N]. Specifically, [Bmim][Tf 2 N] 8 @ZIF-8/Pebax MMM at filler loading of 15 wt% exhibits the CO 2 permeability of 108.3 Barrer and the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 86.7, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Especially the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity locates at a higher level than those of most reported works, indicating that appropriate tuning of the physicochemical properties within the nanocages of MOFs is significative to improve CO 2 capture.

Smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating based on halloysite nanotubes carrying 8-hydroxyquinoline on steel

Chengbao Liu,Peimin Hou,Bei Qian,Xiaoping Hu

Integrating healable and reportable ability to sustain new-generation smart anticorrosion coatings with long-term durability is highly desirable to accommodate the development of marine industries. Herein, a new type of dual-function coating is designed to fulfill the needs. Through introducing the smart nanocontainers based on the core of HNTs loaded with 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) and the shell made from sodium tripolyphosphate-chitosan (CS) into conventional epoxy matrix, the smart healable and reportable anticorrosion coating on carbon steel (Q235) was developed. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray measurement indicated the corrosion inhibition effect of the nanocontainers and healable performance of composite coatings. Benefitting from the 8HQ, the designed waterborne epoxy coating displayed higher low-frequency modulus after 60 days of immersion, confirming the long-term protection ability. Besides, the composite coating exhibited obvious dark-green color at damaged region to timely sense and report the local corrosion in 30 min of immersion tests. This smart coating with sensitive corrosion visualization and well-performed healable properties holds great potential in actual anticorrosion fields.

Polydopamine-mediated modification of ZIF-8 onto magnetic nanoparticles for enhanced tetracycline adsorption from wastewater

Daohu Sheng,Xintong Ying,Rui Li,Siyao Cheng,Cheng Zhang,Wei Dong,Xihao Pan

Magnetic nanoparticle materials which could be used to remove tetracycline were confined seriously due to their poor stability and unsatisfactory reusability. Here, we facilely prepared novel zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-ZIF-8) adsorbent utilizing polydopamine as a bond to establish a connection between zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and Fe 3 O 4 , which could improve the stability of magnetic nanoparticles and enhance the tetracycline adsorption capacity simultaneously. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and their TC adsorption abilities under various experiment conditions (contact time, TC initial concentration and pH values) were also investigated. Experimental results proved that the prepared adsorbent showed superior TC adsorption capacities (92.01 mg/g at pH = 7). Further, the adsorption mechanisms were comprehensively studied and the prepared adsorbent showed satisfactory stability and reusability during the cycle experiment. Altogether, our findings provided a feasible way to design and construct functional magnetic MOF materials for enhancing tetracycline adsorption from wastewater.

Phenolic resin regulated interface of ZIF-8 based mixed matrix membrane for enhanced gas separation

Ke Chen,Linhan Ni,Hao Zhang,Li Li,Xin Guo,Junwen Qi,Yujun Zhou,Zhigao Zhu,Xiuyun Sun,Jiansheng Li

The performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is significantly determined by the inherent structure and composition of incorporated nanofillers. In this work, the core-shell ZIF-8@RF nanofillers were prepared through a kinetically-controlled growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and polymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde (RF), followed by being incorporated into the glassy 6FDA-Durene and rubbery Pebax 1657 via a physical blending approach to form MMMs. Benefiting from the enhanced interfacial compatibility, CO 2 affinity, and the intrinsic characteristics of porous ZIF-8, the resultant MMMs demonstrated outstanding performance for CO 2 /CH 4 separation. The CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the ZIF-8@RF/6FDA-Durene (ZIF-8@RF/Pebax 1657) MMMs increased up to 1332.1/363 Barrer and 28.6/29.6, corresponding to an improvement of 65.4/116.3% of the CO 2 permeability and 49.7/53.4% of the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity compared to the pristine membrane. Meanwhile, CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of ZIF-8@RF MMMs increases by up to 33.0% and 28.1% in comparison to the ZIF-8 without RF layer MMMs, respectively. More importantly, both MMMs can maintain their extraordinary separation performance after stabilized in the existence of moisture. These results demonstrate that the separation performance of the MMMs was remarkably improved with the addition of ZIF-8@RF.
