Heavy metal pollution has resulted in numerous environmental challenges. However, classic approaches, involving the use of solid adsorbents are subject to limitations, including the high energy consumption required for processing before and after use. Accordingly, strategies that facilitate the use of metal capture media that extends beyond waste remediation are attractive. Herein, a porous fluorescent aerogel (CPC aerogel) is constructed by immersing amino-based carbon dots (CDs-NH 2 ) into a polyethyleneimine (PEI)/carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) aerogel network for the simultaneous detection and adsorption of Cr(VI). Adsorption experiments confirm that the CMC/PEI containing CDs-NH 2 aerogel (CPC aerogel) exhibits good Cr(VI) extraction capacity, and can reach a level that conforms with industrial water safety standards. In addition, the CPC aerogel can continuously detect and remove Cr(VI) at high flux. Following Cr(VI) absorption, the CPC aerogel may be vulcanized (MS x -CPC gel) and used for solar thermoelectric generation resulting in power generation. Additionally, the MS x -CPC gel can be used for solar steam generation and exhibits excellent evaporation rates of ≈1.31 kg m –2 h –1 under one sun irradiation. The results serve to underscore how materials designed for metal ion recognition and adsorption once exhausted can be exploited to provide materials for solar thermoelectric power generation and seawater desalination.

Graphene oxide and chitosan microspheres modified with α–FeO(OH) (α–FeO(OH)/GOCS) are prepared and utilized to investigate the performance and mechanism for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions and the possibility of Fe secondary pollution. Batch experiments were carried out to identify the effects of pH, mass, and volume ratio (m/v), coexisting ions, time (t), temperature (T), and Cr(VI) initial concentration (C0) on Cr(VI) removal, and to evaluate adsorption kinetics, equilibrium isotherm, and thermodynamics, as well as the possibility of Fe secondary pollution. The results showed that Cr(VI) adsorption increased withC0,t, andTbut decreased with increasing pH andm/v. Coexisting ions inhibited Cr(VI) adsorption, and this inhibition increased with increasing concentration. The influence degrees of anions and cations on the Cr(VI) adsorption in descending order were SO42−> PO42−> NO3−> Cl−and Ca2+> Mg2+> Mn2+, respectively. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) was the highest at 24.16 mg/g, and the removal rate was 97.69% under pH = 3,m/v= 1.0 g/L,T= 298.15 K, andC0= 25 mg/L. Cr(VI) adsorption was well fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was spontaneous and endothermic. The best fit of Cr(VI) adsorption with the Langmuir and Sips models indicated that it was a monolayer and heterogeneous adsorption. The fitted maximum adsorption capacity was 63.19 mg/g using the Sips model under 308.15 K. Cr(VI) removal mainly included electrostatic attraction between Cr(VI) oxyanions with surface Fe–OH2+, and the adsorbed Cr(VI) was partially reduced to Cr(III) and then precipitated on the surface. In addition, there was no Fe secondary pollution during Cr(VI) adsorption. Keywords:hydroxyl iron oxide;graphene oxide;chitosan;Cr(VI) adsorption

Carbon powders were used to detoxify [Cr(VI)] in metallurgical solid waste was investigated, since the presence of [Cr(VI)] had a very serious impact on the environment. Five types of carbon powders were selected as carbon sources and soluble CrO 3 was used as a hexavalent chromium source in metallurgical solid waste. Ultra-fine Cr 3 C 2 powders (about 80 nm) were synthesized by carbothermal reduction reaction to achieve the detoxification of [Cr(VI)]. The temperature plays a crucial role in the synthesis of Cr 3 C 2 according the experimental and thermodynamic results, illustrating that the synthesis temperature was in the range of 900 ℃–1200 ℃. Surface area, morphology, and surface chemistry of carbon powders were investigated to analyze the effect of carbon type on the mechanism of detoxification of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and the formation of chromium carbide . The results show that nano carbon powder with finer particle size (30–50 nm), higher specific surface area (101.5 m 2 /g) and fewer chemical bonds with carbon atoms formed by sp 2 orbital hybridization are more suitable as a carbon source for carbothermal reduction of [Cr(VI)]. Therefore, nano Cr 3 C 2 powder was achieved at the lowest synthesis temperature (900 ℃), when nano carbon powder was selected as the carbon source.

In this paper, the g-C 3 N 4 /ZnIn 2 S 4 composite was synthesized by a two-stage hydrothermal method. The microstructure, surface, and optical properties of the composite were thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic analysis. The removal capacity of Cr(VI) was optimized by using ZnIn 2 S 4 loaded in the composite. Meanwhile, the optimal pH environment for the reduction of Cr(VI) was determined to be about pH 3, and the reduction efficiency could reach more than 99% within 60 min. Further, the results of UV-Vis absorption analysis indicated the high and wide range of light absorption by composite compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 . Therefore, the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the composite could be attributed to the well-matched energy band structure between g-C 3 N 4 and ZnIn 2 S 4 , which apparently promoted the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the composite showed good stability in the visible light catalytic reaction, and the possible mechanism of the photocatalytic activity of Cr(VI) reduction by the composite was proposed.

Designing high-performance and earth-abundant bifunctional catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting remains a great challenge. Herein, a novel electrode composed of Cr-doped Co 2 P with P vacancies nanowire arrays (denoted as CrCo 2 P(V p ) NWs) grown on nickel foam was fabricated via a hydrothermal and successive calcination method. The Cr doping and vacancy engineering synergistically enable the exposure of more active sites, optimize electronic structure, and accelerate the charge transport capability, thus enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. As a result, the obtained Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activities in 1.0 M KOH solution with low overpotentials of 37 mV at −10 mA cm −2 for HER and 253 mV at 20 mA cm −2 for OER, respectively. Furthermore, using Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs as a dual-function catalyst only requires 1.54 V voltage at 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting. Notably, the Cr 0.4 Co 2 P(V p ) NWs catalyst displays satisfactory stability with only a small attenuation of 3.2% after 50 h in a constant current testing. This study highlights the synergistic effect between doping and anion-vacancies in the enhancement of electrocatalytic activities and provides a feasible strategy to design effective, earth-abundant, and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Heavy metal ions such as Cr(VI) pose great hazards to the environment, which requests materials and methods for decontamination. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has emerged as a promising candidate for Cr(VI) removal. Herein, harnessing the merits of marine biomass, a heterogeneous water treatment system for the decontamination of Cr(VI) is developed based on the in situ immobilization of nZVI on the seashell powder (SP)-derived porous support. A response surface methodology (RSM) study involving three independent factors is designed and conducted to direct material synthesis and reaction design for products with optimal performances. Under optimal synthetic conditions, the nZVI-loaded seashell powder (SP@nZVI), which is characterized in detail by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), results in a 79% increase in the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) compared to free nZVI. Mechanism studies show that the removal of Cr(VI) by SP@nZVI conforms to the Langmuir adsorption model with a quasi-second order kinetic equation, in which redox reactions between nZVI and Cr(VI) occurred at the SP surface. The results of this work are expected to benefit the reuse of bioresource waste in developing environmental remediation materials. Keywords:seashell resource utilization;pyrolysis;zero-valent iron;response surface methodology;chromium removal

The current technologies for production of nanoparticle-membrane are apt to involve complicated multi-step process and/or toxic chemicals and other defects. This study provides a green and clean cryogel manufacture method for fabrication of hydrophilicity Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane with highly porous structure for supporting nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) via a surface modification by employing biodegradable lactic acid. Non-toxic natural compound, glutathione (GSH) was adopted not only as modifiers but also as chelators to promote the capture capacity of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The specific surface area of the prepared composite (GLPN, 193.16 m 2 /g) was larger than the previously studied NZVI-membrane (PPN, 131.61 m 2 /g), and NZVI was distributed uniformly and not agglomerated on the membrane. Compared with NZVI, the efficiency of GLPN removed Cr(VI) has increased by 39.80%. At low pH and Cr(VI) initial concentration, GLPN can completely remove Cr(VI) when the GSH concentration is increased to 50 mM, and the removal efficiency can still reach 86.96% after 6 regenerations. Visual MINTEQ model and experimental results show that the mechanism of GLPN removing Cr(VI) includes the synergy of electrostatic adsorption, chelation, reduction and co-precipitation. The process conforms to two-parameter nonlinear dynamics and Redlich-Peterson isotherm model. This novel strategy shows that GLPN has excellent stability, reducibility and green reproducibility, and can efficiently remove and recycle heavy metal in the natural water matrices or wastewater.

As an efficient and sustainable technology, photocatalysis driven by visible light has made great contributions to the removal of heavy metals from environment. In this work, a series of Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS heterojunction composite photocatalysts were prepared by self-formation of CdS nanoparticles using an octahedral coordination polymer Cd 3 (C 3 N 3 S 3 ) 2 (denoted as Cd 3 (TMT) 2 ) as a precursor. The photocatalytic performance of Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS heterojunction composites for Cr(VI) has been significantly improved under visible light irradiation owing to effective separation and migration of photoexcited charge carriers. Moreover, Cd 3 (TMT) 2 /CdS composites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic reduction performance of Cr(VI) solution with high concentration. This photocatalyst provides a novel route in the photoreduction of Cr(VI).

Developing efficient water adsorbents for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) still remains a challenge due to the poor photothermal heating ability and slow sorption kinetics of most adsorbents. Postsynthetic ligand exchange (LE) provides an alternative strategy to prepare metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with varied structures and functions. In this work, multifunctional hollow MIL-101(Cr) with ferrocene dicarboxylic acid (Fc(COOH)2) ligand exchanged (HMF) nanospheres are prepared and utilized for efficient AWH. The resulted HMF nanospheres present great visible light absorption (>80%) and photothermal conversion ability (61.6%) due to the introduced Fc(COOH)2 ligand. The water adsorption and desorption rates of the HMF nanosorbent are 2.3 times and 4.5 times that of MIL-101(Cr). The fast water capture and solar-driven release kinetics of HMF nanosorbents indicate its great potential for actual water harvesting. The outdoor water collection experiment demonstrates that the areal water harvesting capacity of the HMF nanosorbent is 1720 g m–2 per cycle with packed thickness of 8 mm. HMF nanosorbents also demonstrate good antibacterial activity (91.4%), which is beneficial to the collection of healthy and safe water. This work provides a facile and practical method to design multifunctional MOFs from the molecular level by LE and to achieve solar-driven AWH and other fields.

The Fe 3 O 4 @nSiO 2 @mSiO 2 /NTA (FNMs-NTA) was prepared by grafting magnetic mesoporous microspheres with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) and applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(III) from complex solutions. Some characterization techniques including Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize functional groups and pore structure of FNMs-NTA, which proved that NTA was successfully decorated onto the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @nSiO 2 @mSiO 2 (FNMs) and FNMs-NTA featured a regular mesoporous structure. The batch adsorption of Cr(III) by FNMs-NTA exhibited high adsorption capacity (16.0 mg·g −1 at pH 3.0, and 25 °C). Adsorption data followed Freundlich isotherm and adsorption process was a spontaneous adsorption process. Moreover, the kinetics of adsorption were well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. FNMs-NTA showed resistance to interfering inorganic cations (Na + , Ca 2+ ) and complexing agents (EDTA). Furthermore, FNMs-NTA exhibited remarkable regeneration performance and easy separation under external magnetic field. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the FNMs-NTA had excellent adsorption ability for Cr(III) because of the ion exchange and surface complexation.

We report the experimental realization of using copper zinc tin sulfide (Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 ) material for sonocatalytic application for the first time. Hierarchical Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 microspheres were synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized systematically. Aggregated Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 nanosheets with an average thickness of ~ 20 nm formed a highly open hierarchical structure. The hierarchical Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 microspheres displayed remarkable sonocatalytic activity both in Rhodamine B degradation and in Cr(VI) reduction. The detailed sonocatalytic experiments revealed that Rhodamine B dye degraded up to 96.4% in 14 min and Cr(VI) reduced up to 98.7% in 10 min and both Rhodamine B degradation and Cr(VI) reduction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reusability tests confirmed that the hierarchical CZTS microspheres have proper stability after 4 consecutive cycles. Moreover, the effects of initial dye concentration, various scavengers, and oxidants on the sonocatalytic RhB degradation process have also been investigated. Furthermore, the plausible mechanism of the sonocatalytic degradation in the presence of hierarchical CZTS microspheres was proposed.

EDTA-complexed heavy metals (EDTA-CHMs), one of the typical contaminants in industrial effluents , present challenges for wastewater purification because of their stability and high solubility over a wide pH range. Selective adsorption of various EDTA-CHMs coexisting in industrial wastewater is crucial for the recovery of heavy metal resources. Hence, investigating the competitive behavior and selective adsorption mechanisms of coexisting EDTA-CHMs during the effluent removal process is worthwhile. In this study, we chose Ferrihydrite (Fh) as the adsorbent and focused on the competitive adsorption behavior of two common EDTA-CHMs (EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ)) on the Fh surface, as well as their removal mechanisms. For binary systems (EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ)), the maximum adsorption capacity of Fh for EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) was 17.32 mg/g, but because of the coexisting EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ), adsorption of EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ) by Fh was severely inhibited. In a competition experiment with binary contaminants of different EDTA complexes, Fh consistently exhibited stronger adsorption performance on EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) when the ratio and addition order of EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) and EDTA-Cr(Ⅲ) in the coexisting system was changed, and the valence state of the EDTA-CHMs was the key factor. The adsorption mechanism indicated that Fh could directly adsorb EDTA-CHMs through electrostatic interaction and surface complexation. The recycling rate of EDTA-Cu(Ⅱ) was still approximately 70.63% after five cycles of treatment with Na 2 SO 4 solution. This study provides new insights into the adsorption behavior of coexisting EDTA-CHMs on adsorbents and the selective removal of related pollutants.
