A targeted modification approach involving the synthesis of Ce/C co-doped TiO2aerogels (CeCTi) via a sol–gel method combined with supercritical CO2drying and subsequent heat treatment is employed to enhance the photocatalytic CO2reduction performance of cost-effective and stable TiO2aerogels. The results demonstrate that the CeCTi exhibits a pearl-like porous network structure, an optical band gap of 2.90 eV, and a maximum specific surface area of 188.81 m2/g. The black aerogel sample shows an enhanced light absorption capability resulting from the Ce/C co-doping, which is attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancies. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the production rates of CH4and CO reach 27.06 and 97.11 μmol g−1h−1without any co-catalysts or sacrificial agents, respectively, which are 82.0 and 5.7 times higher than those of the pristine TiO2aerogel. DFT reveals that C-doping facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancies, which introduces defect states within the calculational band gap of TiO2. The proposed photocatalytic mechanism involves the light-induced excitation of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band, their trapping by oxygen vacancies to prolong the charge carrier lifetime, and their subsequent transfer to adsorbed CO2molecules, thereby enabling efficient CO2reduction, which is experimentally supported by photoluminescence measurements.

The development of advanced lubrication technologies is essential for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and improving mechanical durability. In this study, a high-performance lubrication system tailored for diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings is designed, employing graphene oxide-functionalized cerium-based metal–organic framework (GO@Ce-MOF) composites as nano-additive in an aqueous polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution. The GO@Ce-MOF hybrids were synthesized via electrostatic self-assembly, demonstrating outstanding tribological characteristics with an exceptionally low coefficient of friction (COF ≈ 0.004) and minimal wear on DLC substrates. Post-friction analysis confirmed that the structural integrity of the DLC coating remained unimpaired, with wear predominantly localized on the opposing steel balls. A bilayer tribofilm, approximately 45.5 nm thick and composed of metal oxides and amorphous carbon, formed on the steel surface, facilitating a transition to carbon/carbon friction interfaces. The rod-like architecture of the cerium-based metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF), encapsulated by layered graphene oxide (GO), synergistically contributed to reduced rolling friction and provided carbonaceous precursors for in situ tribofilm formation. This solid–liquid lubrication synergy enabled superlubricity and near-zero wear. The findings demonstrate a novel strategy for promoting in situ growth of carbonaceous tribofilms on dual friction interfaces, offering transformative potential for sustainable lubrication of advanced coating materials.

Salen-type Schiff bases, formed by the condensation of salicylaldehyde with diamines, serve as versatile tetradentate N 2 O 2 chelating ligands owing to their tunable electronic and steric structures. Their corresponding metal complexes have been extensively applied as highly efficient and stable catalysts in diverse transformations, particularly in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reactions. In this study, two structurally related propanediamine-derived bis-Schiff base ligands were synthesized from 3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylaldehyde and corresponding diamines, along with a series of Ce-, Fe-, and Co-Salen complexes. A thorough investigation was conducted on their catalytic performances and influencing factors in the ROP of rac-lactide. The results indicate that the catalytic performance of these Salen-metal complexes is dual-influenced by both the ligand structure and the nature of the metal center. Among the investigated catalysts, the Ce-Salen complex exhibited higher catalytic activity and comparatively favorable M n and dispersity values compared to its Fe- and Co-based counterparts under identical conditions. This comparative study provides valuable insights into the metal-center effects in Salen-type catalysts and offers rational guidance for designing efficient catalysts for PLA synthesis.

Conducting multi-mode detection of multiple targets simultaneously on a single platform can significantly enhance the accuracy and flexibility of the detection process. Herein, a fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode sensing platform was constructed by in-situ coating polydopamine (PDA) on Cu/Ce multivalent metal-organic frameworks (Cu/Ce-MOFs). The obtained Cu/Ce-MOFs@PDA exhibits excellent fluorescent properties and multienzyme-like nanozymes activity (including mimics oxidase, peroxidase, phosphatase, and laccase), facilitating dual-mode detection of pesticides, phenolic pollutants, and biomolecules. Particularly, the excellent detection performance is attributed to the synergistic Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ -Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycling and the interfacial electron modulation of polydopamine. In addition, the sensing platform demonstrates excellent signal reproducibility, remarkable anti-interference capabilities and strong applicability to real samples, with a recovery ranging from 84.3% to 118.8%. This work demonstrates a generalizable approach for constructing multifunctional bimetallic MOFs-based nanozymes, enabling the development of integrated analytical platforms with multi-mode signal outputs for environmental and biosensing applications.

To eliminate the environmentally hazardous effect of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) and verify the feasibility of replacing noble metal catalysts with cobalt-based catalysts, monolithic Cu-Co-Ce/TiO 2 /cordierite honeycomb (CH) catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel/impregnation combined method and applied in the catalytic combustion of chlorobenzene, compared with commercial noble metal catalysts. The research suggested that Ce loading had an optimal amount, and Cu-Co 0.86 -Ce 0.54 /TiO 2 /CH catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity among four Cu-Co-Ce/TiO 2 /CH catalysts. Chlorobenzene was completely removed at 330℃ and mineralized at 400℃ under the conditions of an initial chlorobenzene concentration (C 0 ) of 1200 mg m −3 and gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 5000 h −1 . Compared with three noble metal catalysts, the Cu-Co 0.86 -Ce 0.54 /TiO 2 /CH catalyst had the highest catalytic ability at low C 0 and GHSV; however, its catalytic capacity was lower than that of noble metal catalyst C and higher than noble metal catalysts A and B at high values of C 0 (2000 m −3 ) and GHSV (20000 h −1 ). It is speculated that abundant active particles with different structures on the Cu-Co 0.86 -Ce 0.54 /TiO 2 /CH catalyst’s surface induce the lowest light-off temperature for chlorobenzene oxidation; however, their different catalytic activities also induce intermediate products that compete with chlorobenzene for the active sites, which decreases the catalytic activity of the catalyst, especially at high GHSV. The Cu-Co 0.86 -Ce 0.54 /TiO 2 /CH catalyst exhibited good stability, water resistance, and excellent anti-chlorine-poisoning capacity under two different conditions, confirming the feasibility of replacing noble metal catalysts at the relatively low space velocities. This research further identified the key mechanism behind which is the oxygen vacancies, the acid sites, and the electron transfers among Cu 2+ /Cu + , Co 3+ /Co 2+ , and Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ that promoted the adsorption, activation, and transformation of gaseous oxygen and chlorobenzene. Therefore, chlorobenzene is adsorbed and oxidized onto the active sites of the Cu-Co 0.86 -Ce 0.54 /TiO 2 /CH catalyst by both O ads and O latt, which follows the L-H mechanism and the MvK mechanism, respectively. For the noble metal catalyst C, both the E-R mechanism and the L-H mechanism could coexist in chlorobenzene degradation. This research establishes a theoretical basis for the commercial application of low-cost cobalt-based catalysts to effectively lessen the hazardous effects of CVOCs on the ecosystem and human health.

Catalytic systems that couple pollutant degradation with hydrogen evolution have attracted significant attention due to their potential to simultaneously address environmental and energy issues. In this study, an S-scheme heterojunction composed of lamellar polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) anchored with a rod-like cerium metal–organic framework (Ce-MOF) was successfully synthesized via a facile one-step oxidation method, enabling efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and simultaneous tetracycline degradation. The optimized PCN/Ce-MOF composite delivers a hydrogen production rate of 495.7 μmol g−1h−1and achieves a tetracycline removal efficiency of 78%. Such excellent performance is attributed to the charge transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction in the PCN-Ce-MOF composite during the reaction process, while retaining the intrinsic redox capabilities of both materials. Meanwhile, mechanistic studies reveal that tetracycline can effectively capture holes during its efficient degradation, inhibit electron–hole recombination, and promote proton reduction to generate hydrogen. This investigation provides valuable insights for the rational design of S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts, aiming to achieve efficient and stable photocatalytic hydrogen production and synergistic degradation of organic pollutants.

CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol is a core topic in low-carbon chemistry. Cu-based catalysts are widely used due to their low cost and high activity, while perovskites offer advantages such as tunable CO 2 adsorption and high oxygen mobility. In this study, perovskite-structured catalysts were designed and modified with Ce or Zr dopants for this reaction. The results demonstrated that Ce or Zr doping promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies and moderate basic sites. In particular, the Ce-doped LaCeCuZn-181 catalyst exhibited the optimal performance, achieving a CO 2 conversion of 23.3% and a methanol selectivity of 76.5% at 270 °C, 3 MPa. Moreover, no significant deactivation was observed during a 120-h stability test. Comprehensive structural characterizations confirmed that the enhanced activity originated from the synergistic interaction among Cu 0 /Cu + species, oxygen vacancies, and moderate basic sites, which together facilitates H 2 dissociation, CO 2 activation, and intermediate transformation.

The escalating emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) resulting from rapid industrialization pose a severe threat to both ecological balance and public health, rendering the development of high-performance NO 2 sensors imperative for precise environmental monitoring. However, conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors based on pristine materials suffer from intrinsic limitations, including low sensitivity, poor humidity tolerance, and high operating temperatures. Single-mode modification strategies often fail to simultaneously mitigate these drawbacks. Herein, we propose a synergistic modification strategy combining rare-earth doping with heterojunction engineering. Ce-doped SnO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites were successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. Among the fabricated devices, the S 5 CZ 5 sensor (1:1 mass ratio) exhibited superior performance, delivering a robust response of 55.3 to 100 ppm NO 2 at 180 °C, accompanied by rapid response/recovery kinetics (21 s/29 s) and a low theoretical detection limit of 843 ppb. Notably, the incorporation of Ce effectively modulated surface wettability, endowing the sensor with exceptional moisture resistance and long-term stability. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the atomic-scale mechanism: the ternary SnO 2 /Ce-ZnO system yields an exceptionally high NO 2 adsorption energy (−2.55 eV) and a massive interfacial charge transfer (0.49 e), while critically suppressing H 2 O interactions (adsorption energy of −0.40 eV, restricted charge transfer of 0.13 e), as corroborated by charge density difference analyses. Coupled with an optimized density of states near the Fermi level, this work achieves a multidimensional enhancement of sensing performance, offering novel insights for trace gas detection in complex environments.

Constructed an S-scheme g-C 3 N 4 /Ce-MgAl-LDH heterojunction via hydrothermal method. • Achieved complete TC-HCl degradation in 20 min under visible light with H 2 O 2 synergy. • Identified superoxide radicals as dominant species and proposed three degradation pathways. • Revealed enhanced charge separation via Ce doping and S-scheme interfacial transfer. • Demonstrated 85.3% stability after five cycles with reduced ecotoxicity of intermediates. Antibiotic contamination, especially by tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl), presents significant environmental and health challenges. In this study, a 3D flower-like g-C 3 N 4 /Ce-MgAl-LDH composite was synthesized for effective TC-HCl degradation. In situ XPS and DFT calculations confirmed that the formed S-scheme heterojunction enhances charge separation while maintaining strong redox capabilities. Response surface methodology (RSM) identified pH as the key factor influencing degradation efficiency. Under optimized conditions, the catalyst achieved complete TC-HCl removal within 20 min and a mineralization efficiency of 39.8% based on TOC analysis. Quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopy revealed superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) as the primary reactive species. The composite also demonstrated excellent environmental adaptability, broad-spectrum activity, and cyclic stability, retaining 85.3% of its activity after five successive cycles. This work combines an advanced S-scheme photocatalyst design with RSM-guided optimization, offering a practical strategy for antibiotic wastewater treatment. The key to the development of metal–air batteries is the research on efficient and stable non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts that can simultaneously catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the same electrolyte. Ce–O–C single-component materials have abundant oxygen vacancies and commendable electrical conductivity; therefore, they have great application potential in bifunctional catalysis. However, their application is limited by the harsh synthesis conditions (pyrolysis at >1750 °C). Herein, CeO2C2/NC material is obtained during the pyrolysis of Ce-MOF at 900 °C, and it is found that the CeO2C2/NC material has a satisfactory ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic effect. In addition, CeO2C2/NC possesses good electrochemical properties, such as ORR Eonset = 0.92 V, E1/2 = 0.83 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), and an excellent Tafel slope of 77.7 mV dec–1, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis reveals that Ce3+ and its chemisorbed oxygen (Oβ) percentages of 50.33 and 79.37%, respectively, are the main reasons for the production of abundant oxygen vacancies. The prepared Ce–O–C series material will be applied to zinc–air batteries (ZABs), which is expected to improve the comprehensive performance of ZABs. The results can provide ideas for the development of ORR/OER single-component bifunctional catalysts.

Background CO 2 methanation plays a critical role in reducing carbon emissions. The development of Ni-based catalysts with simple synthesis processes and low costs for low-temperature methanation demonstrates promising industrial application prospects, yet it also faces significant challenges. Ni-based catalysts generally require higher metal loadings, which in turn makes it difficult to achieve high metal dispersion, severely limiting their low-temperature catalytic activity. Methods In this study, a simple co-impregnation method was employed in combination with a dual-strategy approach: hydrogen peroxide pretreatment to increase the concentration of silanol groups on the SBA-15 silica support surface and the assistance of ethylene glycol (EG) during the impregnation process. Significant findings The significant finding of this work lies in the demonstrated synergy of a dual strategies to stabilize highly dispersed Ni catalysts for CO 2 methanation. While high dispersion and good low-temperature activity have been reported elsewhere, this study specifically shows that combining (1) ethylene glycol-assisted impregnation to improve initial dispersion with (2) the utilization of SBA-15 silanol groups as anchoring sites effectively mitigates sintering. This combined approach resulted in a catalyst achieving 77% CO 2 conversion and 100% CH 4 selectivity at 250 °C, with characterization confirming the enhanced stability afforded by the synergy.

In this study, high chroma Ce and Pr co-doped zircon-yellow ceramic pigments were synthesized via an in-situ molten salt-assisted method. The effects of Pr doping content and Si/Zr molar ratio on the color performance, phase composition, and microstructure of the pigments were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the introduced of Pr cations not only serve as the chromogenic center but also promotes the crystallization of zircon. The optimal color performance of the sample was achieved when the Pr doping content was 0.07 and the Si/Zr molar ratio was 1.05, with corresponding CIELAB values of L∗ = 77.29, a∗ = 13.78, b∗ = 76.12, and C∗ = 77.36. This color performance was remarkably superior to that of a commercially available high-grade yellow pigment ( L∗ = 82.04, a∗ = −1.62, b∗ = 56.28, and C∗ = 56.30). The synthesized pigment exhibited remarkably coloring performance, a small particle size with a narrow distribution (D 10 = 1.15 μm, D 50 = 3.72 μm, and D 90 = 7.88 μm), and good dispersibility. The in-situ molten salt-assisted method employed in this study offers advantages such as low calcination temperature, reduced environmental impact, and simple operation. This method provides a reliable strategy for the eco-friendly synthesis of high performance yellow ceramic pigments used in premium ceramic decoration.
