Background Developing high-performance n -butanol gas sensors is of great significance for environmental protection and human health. The Bi-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers exhibit promising potential as a viable option for n- butanol sensors. Methods In this study, a series of high response and fast response n -butanol gas sensors were successfully fabricated by Bi-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers with different atomic percentages (0 %, 1 %, 3 %, 5 %), which were synthesized by a facile electrospinning method. Significant findings The nanofibers with a Bi/Zn molar ratio of 3 % showed a response value of 23.6 to 100 ppm n -butanol at 175 °C, which was 2.4 times higher than that of the pure ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers, and with a lower concentration detection limit (1.5 for 100 ppb n -butanol). In addition, the gas sensing materials had a good selectivity and long-term stability to n -butanol, and the mechanism of the good sensing performance of Bi doped ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers for n -butanol is also analyzed in this paper.

Background Gas chromatography is worldwide recognized as one of the most important analytical techniques, due to its high versatility and reliability. The heart of a gas chromatograph is the column, that allows analyte peak separations and, consequently, accurate qualitative and qualitative analyses. New and more efficient columns are always requested to satisfy new and challenging analytical needs. Results In this work, imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar [5] arenes have been used for the first time as gas chromatographic stationary phases , considering their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with cavities rich in π -electrons. Four imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar [5] arenes have been tested as stationary phases with numerous analytes and isomers. In particular, one of these showed superior performances if compared to commercial columns, enabling challenging isomeric separations of halogenated benzenes, aromatic aldehydes, and aromatic anilines. Significance and novelty To our knowledge, this is the first report on the use of the ionic liquid P[ n ]A as a stationary phase in chromatography, either in GC or liquid chromatography (LC) separations. This work demonstrates the promising potential of ionic liquid P[ n ]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

Mercury (Hg 0 ) emission from coal-fired industrial plants poses severe threats to ecosystem sustainability and human health, urging the development of novel and cost-effective adsorbents to treat industrial flue gas. Herein, the modification of industrial residual red mud (RM) through the impregnation of hydrogen halides (HH) and its adsorption characteristics for removing elemental mercury from combustion flue gas was reported. Experimental investigation of HH-modified RM reveals that the hydrogen iodide (HI)-modified RM with a concentration of 1.5 M had a maximum Hg 0 removal efficiency of 98%, whereas hydrogen bromide (HBr) 1.5 M modified RM had a maximum Hg 0 removal efficiency of 90%. The effect of various parameters, such as reaction temperature and halide concentrations, were also found to be influential for the adsorption efficiency of the modified RM. Moreover, it is important to highlight the chemisorption characteristics of HI-modified RM, which significantly enhances the efficiency of the removal process. The Hg 0 removal efficiency increases with the increase in HI concentration (1.5 M @ 93%) with an optimal reaction temperature of 140°C. Furthermore, the maximum Hg 0 removal attained with a change in NO concentration was 98% at 200 ppm. However, increasing the SO 2 concentration reduces the efficiency of RM for removing Hg 0 in simulated coal combustion flue gas. The pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 = 0.98) accurately describes the adsorption of in kinetic investigations, indicating a chemisorption mechanism. This analysis of the chemisorption mechanism highlights the efficiency of halide-modified industrial solid waste, which has the potential to be used in the design of economical and innovative adsorbents for reducing environmental pollution. The present study employed specific reaction parameters such as reaction temperature, halide loading contents, and different flue gas compositions, which had not been extensively explored.

In this paper, ZnS/NiO p-n heterojunction microspheres were fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal approach. The sensing properties of composites with different ZnS contents were investigated by regulating the ratio of Zn. When containing 25 mol% ZnS, the ZnS/NiO nanosphere sensor achieved a response of 125. The response was improved by a factor of about 83.3 compared to pure NiO. The sensor functions optimally at a temperature of 225 ℃, and it possesses excellent selectivity, a rapid response/recovery time (49/44 s), and long-term stability. Therefore, this paper provides a hydrothermal method to prepare ZnS/NiO nanocomposites with heterojunction, specifically designed to detect n-butanol. After performing a series of characterizations, it was determined that the enhancement of the gas-sensitive properties could be related to the construction of ZnS/NiO heterojunctions and the increase in oxygen vacancies.

It is well-known that shale gas production is affected by the wettability of the reservoir. In this work, two gas-wetting alteration agents were synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR. To evaluate the effect of the gas-wetting alteration agents on the shale wettability, the contact angle for droplets on the shale surface was detected, and the results showed that the contact angles of water and n-hexadecane increased from 36° and 0° to 119° and 88° after treatment with sodium [N-propyl-N-(perfluorooctanoyl)amino]acetate (SCF-102), while the contact angles increased to 122° and 110°, respectively, after treatment with sodium [N-[[N-(perfluorooctanoyl)amino]ethyl]amino]propionate (SCF-113). The surface free energy rapidly decreased from the primeval 72 to 10.3 and 6.8 mN/m at equal concentration. These values agreed with the results of spontaneous imbibition, the capillary tube rise test, and the fluid flow test. Additionally, the analysis with energy dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the fluorine-containing adsorption layer was formed and the roughness of the shale surface was significantly increased. This indicated that the gas-wetting surface can be achieved by using the gas-wetting alteration agents. The above results confirmed that the wettability of the shale surface is altered from the original water-wetting or oil-wetting to gas-wetting. Furthermore, the thermal analysis exhibited that the two gas-wetting alteration agents have good thermal stability under 165 and 216 °C, respectively. It demonstrated that they have greater potential to be applied to high-temperature reservoirs.

Ce-doped NdVO 4 nanorods (NRs) were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method by using edetate disodium (EDTA) as a chelating agent. Ce x Nd 1-x VO 4 NRs with square section are assigned to the zircon-type tetragonal structure, and the growth direction for NRs is along the (200) plane. Cerium in Ce x Nd 1-x VO 4 NRs is identified as substitutional dopant. Gas sensors based on Ce x Nd 1-x VO 4 NRs exhibit that the types of semiconductors transfer from n, to p and n -type (n- p - n ) with the amount of Ce. The surface for Ce 0.2 Nd 0.8 VO 4 NRs is with positive charge by Zeta potentials measurement, confirming that it corresponds to p -type semiconductor. XPS data demonstrates that the quantity for Nd 0 and V 4+ as active sites on the surface for Ce 0.2 Nd 0.8 VO 4 NRs increases by Ce doping, leading to increase in the quantity of adsorbed oxygen (O 2− ads ). According to the big dipole moment of acetone, Ce 0.2 Nd 0.8 VO 4 NRs as p -type semiconductor with high O 2− ads content interacts readily with acetone at Nd 0 and V 4+ sites during redox reaction. A gas sensor based on Ce 0.2 Nd 0.8 VO 4 NRs towards acetone gas shows distinct selectivity and a wide detecting linear range to acetone from 10 to 1000 ppm (R 2 = 0.98) at low operating temperature (108 °C).

Interfacial polymerization has emerged as a robust method for fabricating task-specific polyamide (PA) membranes. However, the limited microporosity of highly cross-linked PA membranes constrains their effectiveness in gas separation applications. Herein, we introduce an ionic liquid (IL)-regulated interfacial polymerization process to fabricate polyamide nanofilms incorporating kinked tetrakis (4-aminophenyl) methane monomers. In situ ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy demonstrates that the diffusion of 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) toward the interface increases with the IL/H2O ratio, leading to the formation of a more compact membrane with a higher cross-linking degree. The PA-TAM7/3–60 min membrane exhibits a CO2 permeance of 29.8 GPU and a CO2/CH4 selectivity of 109, exceeding the 2008 Robeson upper bond. Additionally, the highly cross-linked structure imparts the membranes with notable plasticization resistance. Mixed-gas tests (CO2/CH4 = 50/50, v/v) reveal that the PA-TAM7/3–60 min membrane experiences only a 2% reduction in CO2 permeance and a 10% decrease in CO2/CH4 selectivity at a CO2 partial pressure of 300 PSIG, compared to its performance at 30 PSIG. The ease of tuning membrane structure and gas separation performance, along with its excellent plasticization resistance, underscores the potential of these PA membranes for task-specific gas separations.

Keloids pose a considerable worldwide health issue owing to their continual proliferation, invasiveness, and elevated recurrence rates. Keloids are abnormal scars formed through dysregulated wound healing processes, characterized by excessive keloid fibroblast (KF) proliferation, irregular collagen deposits, and persistent reticular dermis inflammation, which can lead to limited joint mobility, psychological distress, and severe pain and itching. In this study, we present metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived TiO2-based nanoparticles (LA@CTx NPs) synthesized as a phototherapy-gas-therapy nanoplatform, which have the ability to break down collagen, reduce inflammation, and stop the overproliferation of keloid fibroblasts. The MIL-125-derived nanoparticles maintain their crystalline framework while being rich in oxygen vacancies (OVs) and l-arginine (LA), enabling efficient photothermal conversion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation driven by synergistic near-infrared (NIR). Importantly, ROS generated by the NPs can trigger nitric oxide (NO) production by oxidizing LA, with the concentration of NO finely tunable via modulation of light conditions. This allows for a dual therapeutic effect: low NO concentrations suppress inflammation, while higher concentrations induce cell death. In vitro and in vivo investigations show that LA@CTx nanoparticles efficiently eliminate primary keloid lesions and provoke apoptosis in keloid cells by dual-modality activation of photodynamic and photothermal treatments facilitated by single NIR irradiation. The study presents an innovative method of therapy for the clinical treatment of keloids.

The mature processes of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted considerable interest. However, the low sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors is still challenging, and constrains its practical applications. Bimetallic nanoparticles are of interest owing to their excellent catalytic properties. This excellent feature of bimetallic nanoparticles can solve the problems existing in MOS gas sensors, such as the low response, high operating temperature and slow response time. To enhance acetone sensing performance, we successfully synthesized Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods. In this work, we discovered that Au-Pd nanoparticles modified on ZnO nanorods can remarkably enhance sensor response. The Au-Pd/ZnO gas sensor has long-term stability and an excellent response/recovery process. This excellent sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles. Moreover, the electronic and chemical sensitization of noble metals also makes a great contribution. This work presents a simple method for preparing Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods and provides a new solution for the detection of acetone based on metal oxide semiconductor.

As a gasotransmitter, endogenous sulfur dioxide (SO2) plays an important role in cardiovascular regulation. In addition, excessive SO2 can react with overexpressed hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in tumor cells to generate toxic radicals, which can induce severe oxidative damage to tumor cells and result in cell apoptosis. This highlights the potential of SO2 in oncotherapy. However, the limited availability of endogenous H2O2 and uncontrolled release of SO2 gas significantly impede the effectiveness of SO2 gas therapy. To address this challenge, a biodegradable calcium sulfite (CS) nanocarrier loaded with 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) was developed for tumor pH triggered SO2 gas therapy in combination with chemotherapy. This nanoreactor could be degraded in an acidic tumor microenvironment to release SO2 gas and HCPT drug. The released SO2 gas induced serious oxidative damage to tumor cells by depleting glutathione (GSH) and generating toxic radicals through a reaction with intracellular H2O2. Simultaneously, HCPT drug promoted tumor cell apoptosis through chemotherapy and boosted SO2 gas therapy by elevating the H2O2 level within the tumor cells. Consequently, the combination of SO2 gas therapy and chemotherapy provided a promising approach for effective tumor treatment.

To enhance the adsorption performance of activated carbon fiber (ACF) on volatile organic compounds such as toluene, a series of Fe x /ACF adsorption materials were prepared by impregnation and anaerobic atmosphere calcination. The various adsorption effects of Fe x /ACF on toluene under different synthesis conditions were discussed, and both the modified and unmodified adsorption materials were characterized by using N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and XPS etc methods. The results indicated that iron modified ACF demonstrated the optimal adsorption performance when ACF was loaded with 3 % iron and calcined at 500 °C, and it achieved a saturated toluene adsorption capacity of 218.12 mg/g, which was 24 % higher than that of the unmodified sample. And its adsorption process of toluene followed Yoon-Nelson model. The adsorption capacity was maintained at approximately 70 % when four adsorption/desorption cycle tests. The toluene adsorption performance of Fe 0.03 /ACF-500 on toluene mainly involved surface adsorption (such as n-π interaction, and π-π interaction), pore filling, and complexation between the loaded metal iron and toluene.
