In the present work, a coating was prepared on an Al alloy substrate by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). To seal the micro defects in the oxide scale, a siloxane layer was prepared on the PEO coating by sol gel method. The polymer sealant was synthesized from Tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) and methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (MPTES). The chemical structure of the polymer was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The morphologies and microstructure of the PEO coating and siloxane coating were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that siloxane formed a continuous layer on the surface and effectively sealed the micro defects. The corrosion behavior of the coatings in three different corrosion solutions (NaCl, HCl, and NaOH) was examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. The corrosion resistance of the sealed coatings was superior to that of the PEO coating because it prevented the penetration of corrosive solutions. The corrosion resistance of the sealed coatings was found to decrease with increasing electrolyte concentration. The work demonstrated that siloxane sealing may greatly enhance the corrosion resistance of Al-based PEO coating in acidic, neutral, and alkaline environments. Keywords:PEO coating;silane polymer;sealing treatment;corrosion resistance

The inhibition mechanism of four inhibitors with different charge on Mg-Gd-Y alloy was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The different charge of inhibitor evoked the preferential adsorption behavior, changing the susceptibility of Mg-Gd-Y alloy to micro-galvanic corrosion. Moreover, the adsorption of inhibitor changed the surface energy of embryos of corrosion product, and strongly suppressed the nucleation rate of corrosion product, leading to poor protective performance. Thus, the inhibitor with anion, exhibiting satisfactory inhibition efficiency for AZ/AM series alloys, showed worse inhibition for the Mg-Gd-Y alloy. Finally, the strategy to select and/or synthesize inhibitors for Mg-RE alloys was presented.

Iron ore tailing (IOT), as a typical solid waste, is in urgent need of high value-added utilization. The resource endowment and silicate composite characteristics owe IOT inherent potentials to prepare environmental functional materials. However, the Si-O-Si(M) bonds in IOT, having both ionic and covalent bonding properties, are very strong, which makes IOT difficult to efficiently utilize. Herein, sodium silicate, magnesium sulfate and potassium sodium tartrate (PST) were simultaneously introduced to promote the reconstitution of IOT as lamellar mesoporous Mg-containing silicate adsorbent. The adsorbents possess high specific area of 280.18 m 2 /g and abundant active sites, whose adsorption capacities for aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) were 30.05 mg/g, 217.39 mg/g, respectively. It is expected that the present work could lay a theoretical and experimental foundation for the high value-added functional utilization of IOT.

Magnesium alloys are promising materials for the regeneration of bioabsorbable implants , but restricted by its poor tribological property and the rapid corrosion. In this work, a robust organic–inorganic hybrid coating was fabricated on the surface of Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloys through a combination of chemical assembly technique of hydroxylated boron nitride (BNO) and plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition of vinyltriethoxysilane. The obtained hybrid coating simultaneously enhanced anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties in both the dry friction and simulated body fluid (SBF)-condition friction. The wear rates of the Mg alloy modified by BNO/siloxane hybrid coating were significantly reduced by 97.3% and 96.4% under dry and SBF conditions, respectively. This step-by-step coating modification method is applicable to various shapes of magnesium alloys and hence displays great potential in implant application.

Removal of antibiotics and bacteria from wastewater is an effective approach to test the efficacy of catalyst and thus address the issues of water contamination. In this study, a stable magnetic Mg/Mn–layered double oxide–doped biochar composite (MgMnLDO–MBC) was prepared using Lentinula edodes substrate. This composite could further effectively activate the persulfates (PS), such as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS). MgMnLDO coupling endowed BC and magnetic biochar (MBC) with enhanced surface areas, adsorption sites, and free radicals, which facilitated the improvement of catalytic activity of MgMnLDO–MBC/PS system toward pollutants. MgMnLDO-MBC/PMS system could remove 90.8% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) with 2.8 times the removal efficiency of MBC/PMS system. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and intermediate analysis showed that the synergistic effect of nucleophilic, electrophilic, and radical active species–mediated reactions improved the removal performance of MgMnLDO–MBC/PMS system. MgMnLDO–MBC/PDS system could efficiently kill 97.6% Escherichia coli and 99.7% Staphylococcus aureus , and destroy the existing biofilms. The effects of composite concentration, PMS loading, pH, temperature, common anions, and humic acid on removal efficiency were also evaluated. After five consecutive cycles, MgMnLDO–MBC/PS system still exhibited high catalytic performance toward CIP removal and bactericidal ability. Results of quenching and electron spin resonance (ESR) showed that ·SO, ·OH, 1 O 2 , and charge transfer were together involved in CIP removal, with ·SO playing a major role. Furthermore, the double–layered metal oxide (LDO) and MBC present in MgMnLDO–MBC composites exhibited a strong synergistic effect in the catalytic process, which resulted in higher reactivity and lower leaching rate of metal ions. In this study, an environment–friendly catalyst was prepared using industrial waste and its efficiency for removal of antibiotics and bacteria from wastewater was verified.

Manufacturing Mg and Mg-based alloys with controllable degradation rate has always been a challenge. Surface modification is one of the best ways to acquire protection against corrosion. Previously, many approaches such as phosphating (Na 3 PO 4 ), fluoridation (HF), and alkalization (NaOH) treatments have been used to regulate the corrosion rate. Here, we compare the corrosion rates of 3-surface modified Mg samples coated with hexamethylene diamine tetra methylene phosphonic (HMDTMPA). The protection of those different layers was ranked in the order: phosphate > alkaline > fluoridation treatment. The chemistry of those chemical conversion layers was discussed in the light of scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The mechanism of tailoring a protective film of HMDTMPA on phosphated Mg was discussed according to the ability of P to bridge the substrate with the coating.

The superhydrophobic surface has become a smart strategy for boosting the application of Mg alloy due to its anti-icing and anti-corrosion abilities. However, its application has been limited due to some drawbacks, such as harmful fluorinated materials, poor mechanochemical robustness, and unsatisfactory anti-icing performance in extreme environments. Herein, a non-fluorinated electrothermal/superhydrophobic coating, including bottom insulation and top superhydrophobic films, is prepared on Mg alloy by spray method. The superhydrophobic coating exhibits good mechanical robustness, chemical stability, and in-situ electrothermal-healing ability against plasma and chemical etchings. The electrothermal characteristic and superhydrophobicity endow the coating with excellent static and dynamic anti-icing, de-frosting, and de-icing performances. Moreover, the superhydrophobic coating exhibits a long-term anti-corrosion effect due to a durable air layer and organic coating, and can recover the coating's corrosion resistance by repairing superhydrophobicity. We expect that this research provides a wise strategy for designing superhydrophobic coating with good mechanical robustness, good chemical stability, electrothermal, in-situ self-healing, outstanding anti-icing, and long-term corrosion protection abilities to meet functional needs of Mg alloy as well as other metal materials.

The efficient and long-lasting corrosion inhibition mechanism of bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium (AOT) on AZ91D Mg alloy in oxalic acid solution were studied by electrochemical methods, surface techniques, theoretical calculations and simulations. The findings demonstrated that AOT was an effective and long-lasting corrosion inhibitor, the corrosion inhibition rate of 6.75 mM AOT was 89.84 % and raised in corrosion inhibition effectiveness with increasing soaking duration. The adsorption of AOT followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm and belonged to physical and chemical mixed adsorption. The polar sulfonyl group of AOT gradually almost vertically adsorbed on its surface to produce a uniform, dense, and thick protective layer to inhibit its corrosion, and the hydrophobicity of the alkyl chain of AOT repelled corrosive medium.

In this work, a low-cost and easily purified small molecule dibenzimidazole compound (BBI) was synthesized by the condensation of o-phenylenediamine and malonic acid. BBI was a new corrosion inhibitor for magnesium alloys and its corrosion inhibition behavior on AZ91D magnesium alloy was studied by electrochemical measurements, surface analysis and theoretical calculations in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at 30 °C. The adsorption behavior and corrosion inhibition mechanism of BBI molecules were discussed. It was found that BBI exhibited excellent inhibition effect on the corrosion of magnesium alloy. When BBI concentration was 0.25 g/L, the optimal corrosion inhibition efficiency was 86.2%. The adsorption of BBI molecule obeyed Langmuir adsorption on the surface of magnesium alloy, and one side of BBI molecule was adsorbed on the surface of magnesium alloy in parallel through physical and chemical mixed adsorption.

Precise regulation of reaction selectivity at high conversions is the key to non-terminated alkyne semi-hydrogenation. Herein, a support modification strategy was employed to incorporate trace amounts of Mg elements into alumina support. The modified support loaded Pd catalyst optimized the activity and selectivity of the non-terminated alkyne semi-hydrogenation reaction. The TEM and XRD characterization of the catalysts demonstrated the entry of Mg elements into the Al 2 O 3 lattice to achieve the modification of the support. For the 2-butyne-1-ol semi-hydrogenation reaction, the Pd 0.5 /Mg 1 @Al 2 O 3 catalyst showed 99 % conversion and 97 % selectivity of the cis product at hydrogen pressure of 0.1 MPa and 25 °C. The introduced Mg element changed the electronic structure of Pd nanoparticles in the catalyst. The precise regulation of the 2-butyne-1-ol semi-hydrogenation reaction was achieved by adjusting the ratio of Pd 0 to Pd 2+ using the synergistic effect of Pd 0 and Pd 2+ .

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by alveolar bone loss , which affects the integrity of the tissue supporting the teeth. Previous studies have shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS) can promote the secretion of inflammatory factors and cause alveolar bone inflammatory reactions and bone resorption. Therefore, scavenging ROS is important for reducing the expression of inflammatory factors and improving the inflammatory environment of alveolar bone tissue. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is one of the most effective antioxidant enzymes for eliminating ROS, which can protect cells from ROS toxicity and reduce the level of intracellular oxidative stress and inflammation. However, SOD molecules have shortcomings, such as short half-life and insufficient stability, which limit the application of SOD in inhibiting periodontal bone resorption. The use of carrier zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) with ATP-responsiveness and good biocompatibility can protect SOD molecules, improve SOD stability, and achieve intracellular SOD delivery. Therefore, we fixed SOD into ZIF-90 using the co-precipitation method to prepare ATP-responsive [email protected] and designed a study to investigate the ability of ATP-responsive [email protected] to reduce the inflammatory response of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human osteoblast MG-63. In our study, the ATP-responsive assembly efficiently suppressed the levels of ROS and pro-inflammatory cytokines, showing great potential to ameliorate the levels of oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and increase osteoblast activity. This provides a novel idea for the application of SOD in alveolar bone resorption.

Dimethylamine (DMA), a widely used organic solvent and famous malodorous volatile organic compound (VOC), is easily released into the atmosphere and harms human health. Here, we designed a bifunctional CoFe/Mg mixed metal oxide (MMO) catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade aqueous DMA, thereby inhibiting DMA re-emission. The results indicated that the DMA (100 mg/L) degradation efficiency exceeded 90% within 80 min. Moreover, the re-emission of DMA into the atmospheric environment was reduced by 80% after catalysis. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements and quenching tests verified SO 4 •− and • OH as the active oxygen species in the CoFe/Mg MMO–PMS system. Combined characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results confirmed that the Co species served as catalytic sites for PMS activation, and the adjacent Mg species acted as adsorption sites for DMA. The synergy effects between the dual sites could accelerate the PMS activation, facilitate the generation of free radicals, and shorten the migration distance between free radicals and pollutants, to realize the efficient DMA degradation. The degradation mechanism and suppressing re-emission process were proposed. This study will provide distinctive insights into the design of catalysts with dual sites and pioneer an unparalleled approach to the industrial governance of effluvial VOCs treatment.
