Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are an emerging energy technology that is environmentally friendly and has a high theoretical energy density, but their commercial application is limited by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Silver-based nanocatalysts can effectively improve the ORR performance. In this paper, a nanoporous Ag–Mn (NP-AM) electrocatalyst with bicontinuous ligaments was prepared by a combination of the melt-spinning technique and dealloying method. Theoretical calculations show that Mn-doped Ag(111) indicates a shift of the d-band center toward the Fermi energy level, which improves the adsorption energy of the OOH and thus reduces the overpotential of the decision step in the ORR process. Among them, the electrocatalyst NP-AM-5 reached a half-wave potential of 0.81 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) with a limiting current density of −5.63 mA cm–2. Tests showed that its ORR process almost completely undergoes 4e– transfer with higher conversion efficiency and also exhibits better long-term stability in comparison to commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. When used as the cathode of a zinc-air battery, the maximum power density reaches 140 mW cm–2. The discharge voltage can be maintained at about 1.2 V for a long period of time by discharging at a constant current of 10 mA cm–2, and the specific capacity is calculated to be 724 mAh g–1.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) has emerged as an efficient approach for sustainable freshwater generation, with current research predominantly focusing on photothermal materials and evaporator configurations. However, there is less attention from a practical engineering perspective for SDIE applications in extreme environments or industrial requirements, such as strong acids, alkalis, and high-salinity wastewater. Herein, we propose a one-dimensional (1D) MAX phase-based photothermal evaporator that combines exceptional solar-thermal conversion efficiency with high chemical stability, enabling efficient solar energy conversion to produce freshwater in various extreme environments. The engineered Ti2AlSnC nanofiber membrane evaporator demonstrates a continuous 30-day operation in concentrated acids (pH < 1) while maintaining a stable evaporation rate of 2.8 kg m–2 h–1. Furthermore, the integrated Joule heating module enables all-day operation under low-light conditions with a minimal energy input (≤3 V). The development of such a material establishes a promising strategy for more practical and durable water treatment solutions to harsh environments.

Mn-doped perovskites have been extensively studied due to their lower heavy metal toxicity and unique optoelectronic properties. However, their intrinsic sensitivity to water limits the extending applications. Besides, the synthesis methods of Mn-doped perovskite still need to be completed in non-polar solvents, which will also cause environmental pollution. Developing new methods will help solve these problems. In this work, we have developed a method for the synthesis of Mn-doped perovskites in aqueous solution. The synthesized perovskites possess excellent stability in water and can be directly dispersed in water without any post-treatment. The perovskites have two photoluminescence peaks belonged to exciton transition and Mn 2+ transition respectively, resulting in diverse color variations during the fast anion exchange process. Based on this, a Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 based chloride probe is designed. The probe is able to achieve quantitative detection of chloride ion through wavelength shift and photoluminescence intensity ratio, with detection limits of 26.7 μM and 67 μM, respectively. Besides, visual detection is also achieved with limitation of 0.5 mM. This three-mode probe effectively addresses the requirements for both accurate quantification and visual identification of chloride ions, demonstrating the vast potential of perovskites in biosensing.

Optimizing energy storage performance often involves increasing the discrepancy between maximum polarization and remanent polarization ( P max - P r ) and breakdown strength ( E b ). Here, aging treatment in acceptor doped NBT-based film is taken for increasing both E b and P max - P r by constructing ordered defect dipoles. Enhanced P max - P r value of 80.6 μC/cm 2 and high E b of 2630 kV/cm are obtained in the aged (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.55 Sr 0.45 Ti 0.99 Mn 0.01 O 3 thin film, which can be attributed to the reversible domain switching caused by ordered defect dipoles and low oxygen vacancies concentration. Accordingly, an energy density of 72.4 J/cm 3 with an efficiency of 76.8 % was achieved simultaneously in the aged film, which are approximately raised by 80.6 % and 45.2 %, respectively, compared with the unaged state. The stable energy storage performances are achieved within the scope of operating temperatures (20–200 ◦ C) and frequencies (0.2–10 kHz). These results provide a new route to take usages of aging process for optimizing the energy performance of NBT-based thin films.

Manganese(II) is considered a valuable alternative to gadolinium(III) in developing contrast agents (CAs) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, due to the labile nature of common Mn(II) complexes, designing ligands that enable stable and inert complexation is essential before clinical application. Mn(1,4-Et4DO2A) bearing four ethyl groups, is found to have a log K MnL as high as 17.86, together with a pMn of 7.52 at pH 7.4. Kinetically, Mn(1,4-Et4DO2A) is approximately 20 times more inert than Mn(1,4-DO2A) in the presence of a 25-fold excess of Zn(II) at pH 6.0 and 37 °C, with the incorporation of a benzoic group to one pendant arm extending the half-life time ( t 1/2 ) to around 22 hours. Its r 1 is measured as 2.34 and 2.20 mM −1 s −1 at 310 K and 1.5 and 3.0 T, respectively, representing an approximate 50% increase compared to Mn(1,4-DO2A). Mn(1,4-Et4DO2A) shows hepatic preference in mice, and its efficacy in diagnosing orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is also confirmed.

The catalytic oxidation of glucose to formic acid (FA) represents a crucial route for biomass valorization. Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon composites offer exceptional tunability for catalyst design. Herein, a series of carbon-regulated Mn x O y /C catalysts from Mn-MOF-74 precursors via controlled calcination atmospheres and temperatures, achieving satisfactory performance in glucose-to-FA conversion. Comprehensive characterization reveals that the carbon matrix plays a synergistic effect: dispersing Mn x O y nanoparticles to enhance substrate accessibility, and preventing Mn leaching to improve stability. The FA yield is determined by fine-tuning key parameters: the (Mn 2+ +Mn 3+ )/Mn valence ratio and Mn x O y particle size. Combined DFT and experimental analyses demonstrate that Mn valence states determine reaction kinetics: Mn 3 O 4 exhibits elevated glucose adsorption energy and reduced formic acid (FA) desorption energy, while MnO displays an opposing trend, rationalizing the activity differences. This work establishes a carbon-mediated synergy strategy for designing efficient Mn-based catalysts in biomass oxidation upgrading.

The composite materials of Mn oxide nanowires and ZIF-8 (Mn x O y NWs@ZIF-8-NF and ZIF-8@Mn x O y NWs-TH) with controllable sizes and morphologies (nanoflower and Tanghulu-like) were successfully synthesized using different solvents (water and dimethylformamide (DMF) under mild reaction conditions. The systematic investigation was conducted to evaluate the effects of key synthesis parameters, including precursor concentration, metal-to-ligand ratio, temperature, and time, on the microstructure and crystalline morphology of the materials. Furthermore, the synthesis mechanisms of the materials in different solvents (water and DMF) were explored, revealing the influence of solvent molecules on their crystal growth processes. The prepared materials serve as “tandem enzymes” (a single nanozyme composite can perform multiple or sequential catalytic reactions), possessing multiple enzyme-like activities (hydrolase- and oxidase (OXD)-like activities). Kinetic studies indicate that the Mn x O y NWs@ZIF-8-NF composite exhibits excellent hydrolase-like catalytic activity, characterized by the high substrate affinity and maximum reaction rate ( K m : 0.01493 mM, V max : 161.42 × 10 –8 M/s). Moreover, Mn x O y NWs@ZIF-8-NF exhibits high specificity and interference-resistance in fluorescent detection of glucose oxidase (GOX) based on its hydrolase and OXD-like activities. In short, this work investigates the role of solvents as one aspect of tailoring material properties, contributing to the development of advanced functional materials and offering a methodological reference for GOX detection. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) face challenges in treating tetracycline (TC) wastewater, including low anode electron transfer efficiency, long pollutant degradation cycles, and limited degradation capacity, which limit their practical applications. In order to solve the above problems, this study developed a unique graded sea urchin type MnO 2 -PANI/CF composite anode material, aiming to simultaneously improve the power generation performance and tetracycline degradation efficiency of MFC. This anode significantly enhances electron transfer efficiency between the anode and microorganisms through an extracellular electron transfer mechanism mediated by Mn redox reactions. The results showed that the MnO 2 -PANI/CF anode significantly improved the performance of MFC, with a maximum power density of 4.702 W/m 3 , which is three times that of the bare CF anode (1.541 W/m 3 ). When treating high concentration tetracycline wastewater (50 mg/L), the TC degradation rate reached 94.64 %. The system maintained a high power output of 4.418 W/m 3 under continuous operation, demonstrating a good synergistic enhancement effect of power generation and degradation. The superiority of this composite anode lies in its low charge transfer resistance, high specific surface area, superhydrophilicity, and excellent biocompatibility. Microbial community analysis further showed that MnO 2 -PANI/CF anode promoted the enrichment of bacterial phyla (such as Bacillota and Actinobacteriota), enhancing the synergistic effect between microbial metabolism and anodic electrochemical processes. This contributes to the mutual promotion between pollutant degradation and electrical energy output. This study provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance MFC anodes for simultaneous power generation and antibiotic wastewater treatment.

The MR/FI bimodal imaging has attracted widely studied due to combining the advantages of MRI and FI can bridge gaps in sensitivity and depth between these two modalities. Herein, a novel MR/FI bimodal imaging probe is facile fabricated by coating the Mn-phenolic coordination polymer on the surface of the carbon quantum dots. The structure of the as-prepared nanocomposite probe is carefully validated via SEM, TEM, and XPS. The content of Mn 2+ is calculated through the EDS and TGA. The quantum yield (QY) and emission wavelength of the probe are about 7.24% and 490 nm, respectively. The longitudinal r1 value (2.43 mM −1 s −1 ) with low r2/r1 (4.45) of the probe is obtained. Subsequently, fluorescence and MR imaging are performed. The metabolic pathways in vivo are inferred by studying the bio-distribution of the probe in major organs. Thus, these results indicate that probe would be an excellent dual-modal imaging probe for enhanced MR imaging and fluorescence imaging.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) has attracted wide attention for medical application due to its biocompatibility and bioactivity. However, the infection problems of HA remain among the leading reasons for implantation failure. Thus, it is urgent to endow HA biomaterials with antibacterial activity. Herein, the high antibacterial activity was achieved by introducing trace Mn3+ and H vacancy couples in HA through a facile heat-treatment strategy in air. The theoretical results indicated that Mn3+ was preferentially substituted for the Ca(2) site in the HA structure with a charge-compensating H vacancy appearing at the adjacent OH− site. The antibacterial tests showed that Mn-HA possessed antibacterial activity towards both E. coli and S. aureus with trace Mn content at the ppm level, and implied that Mn3+ and centers may play an important role in the antibacterial process. The Mn3+ and couples in Mn-HA, serving as oxidative and reductive centers respectively, could then collectively participate in the CoQ/CoQH2 redox cycling and synergistically facilitate the accumulation of CoQ˙− and ROS radicals. This enhanced ROS production was the main factor to endow Mn-HA with efficient antibacterial activity. Moreover, the in vitro bioactivity assay showed that Mn-HA materials exhibited enhanced osteogenic activity and good biocompatibility. Therefore, this work not only provides a feasible method to control the oxidation state of Mn elements in HA, but also proposes a novel trace Mn3+-doped HA for potential applications in tissue engineering.

Li-rich Mn-based materials, as high-energy-density and low-cost cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, suffer severe irreversible voltage fading and capacity loss during cycling, associated with the instability of crystal structure at high voltage, which greatly reduces the specific energy density after cycling and thus impedes their commercialization. Here, we introduce a new strategy to mitigate voltage fading and improve the cycling performance of Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials by simply introducing MgSO4 in the cathode during its preparation process. The results show that cycling stability and voltage fading of corresponding batteries were dramatically improved due to the high Li+ retention at the initial charge process and the stable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer. After 100 cycles at 1C, the average discharge voltage decay is only 0.115 V (1.15 mV per cycle), with a high voltage retention of 96.7%, and the capacity remains at 91.5% after 300 cycles at 1C.

The activated coke is a promising support for catalysts, and it is important to study the performance of the activated coke catalyst on the removal of NOx. In the current research, a series of the activated coke-supported Mn–Cu catalysts are prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method. The effects of the molar ration of Mn/Cu, the content of Mn–Cu, the calcination temperature, and reaction space velocity on NO conversion are investigated, and it was found that the 8 wt.% Mn0.7Cu0.3/AC had the best catalytic activity when the calcination temperature was 200 °C. The existence of SO2caused the catalyst to deactivate, but the activity of the poisoning catalyst could be recovered by different regeneration methods. To uncover the underlying mechanism, BET, XPS, XRD, SEM and FTIR characterizations were performed. These results suggested that the specific surface area and total pore volume of the poisoning catalyst are recovered and the sulfite and sulfate on the surface of the poisoning catalysts are removed after water washing regeneration. More importantly, the water washing regeneration returns the value of Mn3+/Mn4+, Cu2+/Cu+, and Oα/Oβ, related to the activity, basically back to the level of the fresh catalyst. Thus, the effect of water washing regeneration is better than thermal regeneration. These results could provide some helpful information for the design and development of the SCR catalysts. Keywords:activated coke;low-temperature NH3-SCR;sulfur poisoning;regeneration
