Optimizing WC-10Co Cemented Carbides with High-Entropy (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) Inhibitor: Microstructure, Mechanics, and Wear Resistance

Xin Tang,Ruipeng Mao,Fan Zhang,Yongzhong Jin,Wei Su,Wu Jiang,Junhao Wang

Cemented carbides play a pivotal role in diverse industrial sectors, and controlling abnormal grain growth and regulating the homogeneity of the Co binder phase are the key challenges to improve their properties. In this study, WC-10Co alloy was prepared for the first time by low-pressure sintering technique using (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) high entropy powder as an inhibitor, focusing on the effect of trace additions of (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy as well as friction and wear properties. The results show that under the conditions of sintering at 1420 ℃, a pressure of 3   MPa, and a holding time of 1   hour, the alloy with 0.2   wt.% high-entropy inhibitor exhibited the best comprehensive properties, with a flexural strength of 3752   MPa, a Vickers hardness of 1679 HV 30 , and a fracture toughness of 13.07   MPa·m 1/2 . During the stable stage of tribological testing, the average friction coefficient reached 0.6195, and the wear rate was as low as 1.34×10 -7 mm 3 /(N·m). The toughening and strengthening mechanism of the (Ti, Cr, V, Nb, Mo)(C, N) - modified alloy is mainly attributed to the significant refinement of WC grains, WC lattice contraction, and the formation of Co-based solid solutions by the high-entropy inhibitor. However, excessive addition deteriorates the overall performance. This study provides experimental data and technical insights for the development of a new generation of cemented carbides with high strength, high toughness, and excellent wear resistance.

Synthesis, Alloying Process, and Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Activity of Highly Stable Ni–Fe–Mo Nanoparticles with a Face-Centered Cubic Phase

Yan Jia,Xiao Ma,Yi-Bin Yang,Rui Chao,Ji-Kai Li,Peng-Fei Guo,Bing Zhu,Qian-Nan Yang,Wei-Tao Wang,Lu Liu,Zhao-Tie Liu,Yang Yang

Real-time visualization of alloying evolution is crucial yet challenging for designing and synthesizing face-centered cubic (fcc) nanoalloy catalysts for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a trimetallic fcc NiFeMo nanoalloy is synthesized via topological reduction of NiFeMo layered double hydroxide (LDH) under an Ar/H 2 atmosphere. In situ heating transmission electron microscopy reveals the transforamtion of non-hexagonal NiFeMo LDH nanosheets into irregular inverse-spinel Ni 1-x Mo x Fe 2 O 4 nanoparticles, eventually forming spherical fcc NiFeMo nanoalloy particles. Furthermore, the NiFeMo nanoalloy demonstrates a Faradaic efficiency of 99.3% and superior intrinsic OER activity compared to NiFe and Ni nanoalloys at a consistent mass loading, due to synergistic metal interactions. The NiFeMo nanoalloy-modified nickel foam electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical stability, with structural and elemental analyses confirming that the original fcc structure remains intact after long-term OER testing. Operando differential electrochemical mass spectrometry coupled with isotope labelling experiment illustrates that the OER on NiFeMo nanoalloy proceeds via an adsorbate evolution mechanism pathway. Theoretical calculations suggest that Mo species reduce the potential barriers for *OH intermediate formation, thereby enhancing the inherent activity of Ni active sites in the NiFeMo nanoalloy. This work presents a novel approach for developing advanced trimetallic and high-entropy nanoalloy OER catalysts.

Synthesis of bimetallic compounds derived from Polyvinylpyrrolidone modified-FeMo2S3 and ZnMo2S3 Mo-clusters and their antibacterial application against water-borne microorganisms

Shi Xue-Chao,Wang Yi-Mei,Hou Shu-Xian,Yang Guo-Qiang,Liu Xin-Xin,Ge Jun,Gui Lin,Zhang Wei-Wei,Kaoutar Chaldi,Li Shu-Jie,Wang Jun,Ge Fei

Waterborne microbial contamination represents a significant global environmental challenge. Microorganisms can induce water pollution, precipitating infectious disease outbreaks and posing a substantial threat to human health. Currently, the excessive use of conventional antibiotics has resulted in the emergence of bacterial resistance, posing a challenge to the design and development of antimicrobial agents with high antibacterial efficacy in diverse water such as rivers, lakes, and wastewater from microbiology laboratories. Bimetallic nanomaterials, that amalgamate the distinctive characteristics of diverse metals, are garnering attention due to their synergistic properties. In this study, PVP-FeMo 2 S 3 (PVP: Polyvinylpyrrolidone) and PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals were synthesized by a high-temperature reaction. The prepared nanocrystals exhibited excellent biocompatibility, regular morphology, long-term stability, and remarkable antibacterial effects. The bacterial biofilms could be eradicated by the combination of photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic synergistic effects of PVP-FeMo 2 S 3 and PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals. PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 nanocrystals exhibited enhanced PTT conversion efficiency for water treatment. Remarkably, even after 20 cycles of recycling, PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 retained substantial antibacterial efficacy. The excellent biosafety of PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 further guarantees the safety of water quality post-treatment. Thus, PVP-ZnMo 2 S 3 bimetallic nanocrystals can serve as a novel antimicrobial agent for the treatment of microbial contamination in water. This study offers a potential strategy to mitigate secondary water pollution and prevent the development of drug resistance among pathogenic microorganisms.

Overlooked synergistic effect induced by fe-mo dual-atom catalyst in water remediation: Enhanced electron management and efficient pollutants pre-activation

Yanan Huang,Yan Zhao,Dawei Song,Yaqin Shi,Huan Chen,Bo Niu,Donghui Long,Yayun Zhang

This study uncovers a synergistic Fe-Mo dual-atom catalytic mechanism that enhances peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation through dynamic electron management and substrate pre-activation. A nitrogen-doped carbon-supported FeMo dual-atom catalyst (FeMo/NC) was synthesized and systematically analyzed using XAFS, in situ Raman, DFT calculations, and electrochemical tests. The FeMo/NC-PMS system achieved 99 % ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation within 10 minutes (rate constant: 0.402 min −1 ), maintained > 90 % efficiency across pH 1–13, and exhibited minimal Fe/Mo leaching (<0.1 ppm) with 90 % retention after five cycles. Mechanistic studies revealed that Mo stabilizes Fe valence states via electron transfer, strengthens Fe-N coordination, and promotes pollutant pre-activation on Mo sites while enabling selective 1 O 2 generation at Fe sites. This work establishes a dual-atom design strategy to optimize electron redistribution and interfacial interactions in Fenton-like systems. The demonstrated compatibility with membrane filtration (100 % CIP removal in wastewater) highlights its potential for practical water remediation applications.

Competitive Anchoring of Mo Atoms Induces Pt Atoms Agglomeration and Enhanced Electronic Effects: Elevated Activity and Selectivity for Carbon Disulfide Hydrogenation

Yuxuan Xie,Xinyu Yang,Zhao Li,Ziruo Zeng,Shuangyou Bao,Xin Sun,Yixing Ma,Kunlin Li,Chi Wang,Fei Wang,Ping Ning,Kai Li

High-electron-density Pt 0 nanoparticles (NPs) with excellent hydrogen activation and spillover capacity offer unique advantages in volatile organic sulfur selective hydrogenation reactions. Taking advantage of the more preferential and effective anchoring of Mo atoms at the γ-Al 2 O 3 terminal hydroxyl (OH) groups and its electron modification role, competitive anchoring is induced by a simple co-impregnation synthesis method to promote the agglomeration of low-loading Pt atoms into high concentrations of electron-rich and enlarged Pt NPs, which resulted in a substantial increase in the active centers for hydrogen dissociation. The Mo doping amount with the best Pt aggregation efficiency is 3 wt.%, and the hydrogen spillover efficiency of 1Pt3Mocom/Al catalyst is significantly higher than that of 1Pt/Al catalyst, which efficiently convert carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) (95%–100%) while maintaining a methanethiol (CH 3 SH) selectivity of 85% at 250 °C or a methane (CH 4 ) selectivity of 92% at 310 °C in the 24 h long-term test. In situ DRIFTS revealed that the improved catalyst performance is due to the elevated capacity to generate the intermediates HCSS * , CH 2 S * , and CH 3 S * . The 1Pt3Mocom/Al catalyst synthesized by competitive anchoring strategy greatly reduces the Pt consumption and is instructive for the exploitation of low-cost Pt NPs active centers.

Efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting is achieved by the Mo doped ZnIn2S4/Bi4NbO8Cl Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst with full-spectrum response

Yutong Chen,Rong Wu,Jianyong Yue,Dezheng Kong,Chen Zhang,Shunhang Wei

Photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS) is an efficient technology that converts solar energy into H 2 energy, holding significant importance in the realms of energy and the environment. As a visible-light photocatalyst, ZnIn 2 S 4 , despite being an ideal low-dimensional semiconductor for photocatalytic overall water splitting, has its performance therein affected by poor charge separation. The present study reports the successful synthesis of a novel Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo Z-scheme heterojunction via a hydrothermal method. Under AM 1.5G irradiation, the POWS H 2 evolution rate was measured at 84.8 μmol g −1  h −1 , while the O 2 evolution rate was determined to be 47.0 μmol g −1  h −1 . Under simulated solar light irradiation, Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo heterojunction exhibits an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 0.22 % at 420 ± 20 nm and a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of 0.026 %. UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopic analysis unequivocally demonstrated a significant enhancement in the utilization efficiency of the Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl/ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo Z-scheme heterojunction in the near-infrared light region compared to the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 and Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl. This improvement extends the spectral absorption boundary of the photocatalyst, allowing efficient capture of a considerable proportion of low-energy photons in sunlight. Unique charge transfer mechanism of Z-scheme heterojunction was revealed by in-situ XPS and EPR tests. Z-scheme heterojunction effectively promoted the respective enrichment of electrons and holes generated by photo-excitation in ZnIn 2 S 4 :Mo and Bi 4 NbO 8 Cl, thereby improving the performance of POWS. This study not only establishes an experimental foundation for the design and construction of Z-scheme heterojunctions but also explores a new approach to augment the utilization efficiency of the near-infrared solar spectrum.

Microstructural evolution and 1500 °C oxidation resistance of Mo(Al,Si)2 fabricated via an innovative two-step SHS-SPS technique

Nana Zhu,Lu Zhu,Baojing Zhang,Peizhong Feng,Shiheng Li,Philipp V. Kiryukhantsev-Korneev,Evgeny A. Levashov,Xuanru Ren,Xiaohong Wang

An innovative two-step approach of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) was developed to rapidly fabricate MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics for high-temperature anti-oxidation applications. The SHS process predominantly promoted the synthesis of high-purity and high-yield MoSi 2 and Mo(Si,Al) 2 phases in the alloyed powders. Subsequently, dense and crack-free MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics were produced using SPS. 1500 °C oxidation tests of the ceramics (100 h) revealed the formation of a protective SiO 2 oxide layer on the surface of MoSi 2 ceramics, while an Al-Si-O composite glassy oxide layer formed on Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics, which exhibited better thermal stability and lower oxygen permeability compared to the single SiO 2 oxide layer. However, an excessive Al content (>0.05 at.%) compromised the oxidation resistance due to the emergence of a Si-depleted Mo 5 (Si,Al) 3 layer with inferior oxidation resistance, which was caused by the high-temperature diffusion of Si. Therefore, via this novel two-step SHS-SPS technique compact and crack-free Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics can be rapidly synthesized at high temperatures. When trace amount of Al was added (0.05 at.%), Mo(Si 0.95 Al 0.05 ) 2 showed optimum high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Biomass to aviation-fuel-range hydrocarbon conversion over Pd-Mo/γ-Al₂O₃ catalysts: Revealing synergistic active sites and reaction pathways

Wanchen Zhu,Zhongyang Luo,Feiting Miao,Longyi Liu,Akira Nakayama

Biomass hydropyrolysis (HP) vapor upgrading (VU) is highly promising for producing sustainable aviation fuel, yet challenges remain. This study focused on PdMo/γ-Al 2 O 3 and Mo/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyzed HP-VU of biomass in a pressurized continuous fixed-bed and the reaction mechanism. The results demonstrated that the introduction of Pd enhanced the hydrodeoxygenation activity through multiple effects, including the generation of surface acidic sites, the formation of oxygen vacancies, and the effect of hydrogen spillover. Beyond this, the effects of upgrading temperature and pressure on the catalytic performance of PdMo/γ-Al 2 O 3 were also investigated. Under optimal conditions of 400 °C and 1.0 MPa, the organic phase achieved a mass yield of 12.03 wt%, with the selectivity of C4+ aliphatic hydrocarbons and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons reaching 77.01 %, leading to an HHV of 42.41 MJ/kg and high mass balance (98.71 %). Density functional theory calculations further provided insights into the role of defect sites in facilitating C–O/C=O bond cleavage and the contribution of Pd sites to C C bond activation. By integrating theoretical calculations with model compound experiments, the study revealed the potential reaction pathways including hydrodeoxygenation, hydrogenation, and C C coupling. This study provides practical and theoretical insights into the bimetallic-catalyzed HP-VU process of biomass.

Multiple redox Centers and defect engineering in Fe/Mo dual-doped Na3V2(PO4)3 cathodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Min Xie,Xiaoying Li,Yufan Chen,Xiangyue Liao,Qiaoji Zheng,Heng Zhang,Kwok-Ho Lam,Dunmin Lin

Sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type phosphates cathodes have attracted considerable attention due to their high operational voltage and robust three-dimensional (3D) framework; however, the poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and low energy density hinder their broader application. Herein, a novel NASICON-type Na 3 V 1.44 Fe 0.5 Mo 0.06 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode was designed through Fe/Mo dual-doping at the V sites of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 and synthesized via a conventional high-temperature solid-state method. The introduction of Fe 3+ activates the V 4+ /V 5+ redox couple at a high voltage plateau (∼ 4.0 V), while also generates additional Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and V 4+ /V 5+ redox pairs. Meanwhile, the doing of Mo 6+ creates cation vacancies, effectively modulating the electronic structure of vanadium and promoting ionic transport kinetics. Benefiting from this dual-doping strategy, the Na 3 V 1.44 Fe 0.5 Mo 0.06 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode delivers a high capacity of 123.4 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and an impressive energy density of 406 Wh kg −1 within 2.2–4.2 V. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding cycling stability, presenting a capacity retention of 92 % after 2500 cycles at 30C. This work highlights a viable strategy for advancing high-performance NASICON-type cathodes through complex metal ion doping.

Construction of a built-in electric field in Mo-doped Ni/WO3 to enhance asymmetric charge distribution for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Sun,Fan Yang,Kexin Wei,Siyuan Sun,Li Sun,Junpu An,Chunhui Yu,Qing Guo,Conghan Zhang,Guang Ma,Hongchen Liu,Yongfeng Li

Constructing an asymmetric charge distribution and built-in electric field (BIEF) has proven to be an effective strategy for enhancing the catalytic performance of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, a Mo-doped Ni/WO3 heterojunction catalyst was immobilized on Ni foam for enhancing the performance of the HER and OER. The constructed Ni/WO3 heterointerface facilitates electron transport, while the incorporation of Mo further amplifies charge asymmetry in the interfacial region. The optimized Mo3–Ni/WO3 catalyst exhibits excellent performance, requiring only 13 mV and 328 mV overpotential to reach current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively. Besides, it maintains stable overall water splitting performance at 100 mA cm−2 for 90 h. The asymmetric distribution of Ni/WO3 interfacial charge is promoted and electron transport is enhanced by Mo doping. Theoretical results show that element doping in the heterostructure turns W sites into additional adsorption centers, optimizing the energetics of H* adsorption during the HER. Mo doping reduces the work function (φ) of Mo3–Ni/WO3, promoting efficient electron transfer and lowering the energy barrier for intermediate formation, thereby enhancing OER activity. This strategic modulation of charge asymmetry in heterojunction architectures provides a new approach for the rational design of high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Construction of Z-scheme g-C3N4/Ag/P3HT heterojunction for enhanced visible-light photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC) and methyl orange (MO)

Fei Liu,Thien-Phap Nguyen,Qin Wang,Florian Massuyeau,Yi Dan,Long Jiang

Constructing a conductive interface is crucial for the transfer of photoexcited charges in the photocatalytic heterojunction system. In this study, we introduced Ag into g-C 3 N 4 /P3HT system to construct a conductive interface which benefits for transfer of photoexcited charges between g-C 3 N 4 and P3HT. A series of characterizations were employed to investigate the chemical structure , morphology and optical property of the obtained catalysts. And the photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/P3HT composites were evaluated by the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and methyl orange (MO) aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. Results show that the g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/P3HT exhibits a broad absorption band in the region of 400–700 nm and the photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/P3HT obtains a great improvement comparing with that of g-C 3 N 4 , g-C 3 N 4 /Ag and g-C 3 N 4 /P3HT. In addition, the optimized loading content of P3HT is 0.3 mass% based on g-C 3 N 4 . The enhanced photocatalytic performance is due to the introduction of Ag, which improves the transfer of photoexcited charges between g-C 3 N 4 and P3HT. The active species trapping experiment shows that the main active specie is O 2− . After five recycling experiments, the g-C 3 N 4 /Ag/P3HT shows high stability in the photocatalytic performance.

Fe/Mo bimetallic sites-decorated carbonaceous material via 3 electron photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction pathway for ultra-efficient degradation of water pollutants

Bo Shen,Yuxin Hui,Qi Wang,Fei Wang,Derek Hao,Huayue Zhu,Liguo Shen,Hao Du

Photocatalytic three-electron oxygen reduction (3e - ORR) can convert dissolved O 2 into •OH via coupled 2e - /1e - steps, bypassing external H 2 O 2 dosing and the kinetic bottleneck of conventional photo-self-Fenton (PSF) systems. Here, Fe-substituted phosphomolybdate clusters (FePMo) are anchored on a biomass-derived hierarchical tubular carbon (HTCC) to form an HTCC/FePMo heterojunction (HFe) that drives a visible-light self-Fenton process. For tetracycline (TC, 10 mg L −1 ), HFe achieves 99 % removal within 120 min at unadjusted pH 0 = 5.8 ( k obs = 0.026 min −1 ) and 3.6–7.7-fold higher mineralization than either component, while retaining high activity from pH 3–9 and in saline water, natural surface water, and secondary effluent. In a continuous-flow reactor, an HFe/PVDF membrane (0.64 mg cm −2 loading; 2 mL min −1 , HRT 1.23 min) sustains > 90 % TC removal for 120 h. Ecotoxicity is alleviated, with inhibition-zone diameters shrinking from ∼2.3 to ∼0.8 cm ( S. aureus ) and from ∼1.25 to ∼0.7 cm ( E. coli ), and wheat-leaf Fv/Fm recovering to ∼0.73, comparable to the water control. The energy demand is low (EE/O = 0.0031 kWh L −1 ; EE/M = 0.31 kWh g −1 ), supporting a scalable, sustainable route for advanced treatment of refractory wastewater.
