The synthetic hydrogel owns huge potential and broad prospects in cartilage tissue engineering due to a series of unique properties, such as bioactivity, the nutrition ions release ability, high mechanical properties and chondrogenesis capacity. Bioactive glass (BG) and PVA have been widely investigated and reported with safety and excellent biocompatibility as tissue engineering materials. In this study, we have synthesized a novel composite hydrogel formed by crosslinking between bioactive glass and PVA for cartilage repair, furthermore, we have explored the reaction mechanism of this hydrogel. It was found that hydrogen bonding was formed by the hydroxyl groups in PVA combining with the oxygen atoms from the non-bridge Si-O bond in bioactive glass, which can explain better mechanical properties for PM group than that of PVA. The tensile and compressive stress of PM5 hydrogel group has reached 4.8 MPa and 1.8 MPa equaling mechanical properties of natural articular cartilage. Moreover, the hydrogel can significantly support the proliferation of mice chondrocytes in vitro. Meanwhile, it can also effectively upregulate the expression of chondrogenesis related genes (AGGRECAN, SOX9, COL2). Therefore, the novel hydrogel possesses excellent properties in cartilage repair, and exhibits potential medical applications in the future.

The decorative and fireproof performance degradation of the grouting fireproof glass exposed to UV irradiation limits its application in the fire protection of buildings. To solve this issue, a transparent polyacrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol (PAM/PVA) interpenetrating network hydrogel was designed to prepare grouting fireproof glass with enhanced theheat insulation and anti-aging properties. The results show that the light transmittance of PAM/PVA interpenetrating network hydrogel decreases with the increased content of PVA, and a proper content of PVA in the PAM/PVA interpenetrating network is beneficial to maintain high optical transparency in the resulting hydrogel. Heat insulation test shows that the PAM/PVA interpenetrating network improves the water-locking ability of the resulting hydrogels, and the fireproof glass containing 3 wt% PVA shows the lowest backside temperature of 92.6 °C at 3600 s, which is 51.9% lower than that of fireproof glass with PAM only. Thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis show that the PAM/PVA interpenetrating network hydrogel improves the thermal stability and charring ability of hydrogel, and the hydrogel containing 3 wt% PVA exhibits the best charring effect among the samples, showing the highest residual yield of 39.2 % at 800 °C. The analyses of decomposition products and char residues show that the PAM/PVA interpenetrating network hydrogel can extend the heat absorption process of water evaporation and improve the gas flame retardant efficiency. Accelerated aging test shows that the presence of PVA greatly slows down the blistering and yellowing phenomenon of fireproof glass, thus endowing the fireproof glass with the super durability of fire resistance. Especially, the backside temperature at 3600 s and light transmittance of the sample containing 2 wt% PVA after 168 h aging test only changed 19.2 °C and 1.9 %, respectively, compared to the those of unaged sample.

The textile industry consumes large quantities of freshwater and discharges large quantities of dye/salt wastewater, causing serious environmental problems. Nanofiltration (NF) has proven to be able to achieve efficient dye/salt separation. However, conventional polyamide (PA) NF membranes are often constrained by the trade-off between selectivity and permeability. Herein, we developed a highly dye/NaCl selective nanofiltration membrane with a rod-coated PVA interlayer. The rod-coating approach allows better control of PVA dosage to create a perfect PVA interlayer. The formation and effect of rod-coated PVA interlayer significantly improved the permeability. With an optimal PVA dosage of approximately 0.32 g/m 2 , the permeance of the iTFC membrane (>30.0 L/(m 2 h bar)) was almost 3 times that of the control membrane. Moreover, the iTFC-PVA membrane had an outstanding Rhodamine B rejection (99.8 %), low sodium chloride (NaCl) rejection, and maximum NaCl/dye selectivity ratio as high as 428. It is anticipated that the iTFC membrane has great potential in the field of dyehouse wastewater treatment . Furthermore, our study proves that the Mayer rod-coating approach is suited to fabricating high-performance PA-NF membranes with PVA interlayers. It is anticipated that organic-containing wastewater can better be treated by the developed membrane to achieve a better water environment and resource recovery.

Intelligent controlled release technologies that rely on environmental changes to control the release rate of antimicrobial agents have attracted attention in the field of food preservation. In this paper, cinnamaldehyde (CN) was grafted onto chitosan (CS) to form a pH-responsive controlled-release complex, CS–CN, via the Schiff base reaction. Then, tempo oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and PVA were prepared as aerogels loaded with CS–CN with different pore parameters (PCNF@CN). Release experiments showed that acid triggered the release of CN and increased the release from 10.3 to 68.4% with increasing pH. In addition, PCNF@CN showed significant pH-responsive antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Utilizing the water absorption of the aerogel and triggering the release of CN, the shelf life of fresh meat could be delayed for 4 days. This study demonstrated the potential application of PCNF@CN aerogel in functional food preservation packaging.

The increasing demand for effective thermal management in electronic devices has highlighted the crucial importance of researching composite materials with exceptional thermal conductivity in the field of electronics. A novel hybrid filler consisting of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) and needle-like zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) was designed and synthesized in this work, then used to prepare thermally conductive composites by mixing it with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using the ice template method and hot-pressing process. The results demonstrated that a filler loading of 20 wt% yielded the highest thermal conductivity for the composite, reaching an impressive in-plane thermal conductivity of 1.77 Wm −1 k −1 , which was 3.4 times higher than that of the conventional frozen pure PVA. This substantial improvement in thermal conductivity is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect achieved through the ice template method to construct a conventional orientation structure combined with the presence of BN-ZnO NWs hybrid filler. In addition, this composite also has good mechanical properties and thermal stability, etc. Our study shows that the BN-ZnO NWs/PVA thermally conductive composite demonstrates excellent potential as a thermal interface material for various applications in the field of thermal management of electronic devices.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) aerogel is usually used to restrict the flow of liquid polyethylene glycol (PEG) for the preparation of composite phase change materials (PCM). Currently, the vacuum freeze-drying method is demonstrated to be the most valid way to prepare PVA aerogel. However, achieving a high thermal conductivity and optical thermal conversion efficiency in composite PCM remains challenging, due to the lack of effective thermal conductivity fillers and optical thermal conversion media within the reported PVA aerogel. Herein, we report a simple method to prepare PVA-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel by reductant reduction and vacuum freeze-drying methods. PVA-rGO aerogel is well suitable to accommodate PEG, and the consequent composite PCM (PEG/PVA-rGO) demonstrates an outstanding PEG loading rate of up to 96.9 wt%. In addition, due to the efficient light absorption and highly thermal conductivity of rGO, the photothermal conversion efficiency of PEG/PVA-rGO was increased to 88.2%, while also increasing its thermal conductivity to 0.348 W/(m·K). The melting enthalpy of PEG/PVA-rGO is measured to be as large as 155.5 J/g. Furthermore, the use of PEG/PVA-rGO for solar-thermal energy storage application is demonstrated. This work provides valuable guidance for preparing high-performance form-stable composite PCM and raises their potential for practical use in solar energy storage and energy-efficient buildings.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted much attention in soft electronic devices. However, it is still a challenging to be integrated with outstanding mechanical performance, self-healing, shape memory and conductive capability. Herein, we developed a multifunctional conductive hydrogel via interpenetrating network (IPN) and multiple hydrogen bond interaction. Poly (acrylic acid)-polyaniline (PAA-PANI) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) form bones of IPN through chemical and physical double cross-linking. Chemically crosslinking of IPN was obtained by in situ polymerization of acrylic acid and aniline. Physical crosslinking is realized by more multiple hydrogen bonds (N–H···O, O–H···O, O–H···N, N–H···N) interaction among PVA, polydopamine and PF127 diamino oxygen derivatives. PANI forms a conductive path in the IPN to ensure its conductivity. IPN hydrogels with multiple hydrogen bonds has excellent mechanical strength, which is much higher than conventional conductive hydrogels. Moreover, the structure endowed the hydrogel low swelling property, good self-healing and thermal-responsive shape memory effect. The multifunctional IPN conductive hydrogel have potential applications in smart devices including self-healing electronic devices, soft robot, and sensors.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) filled with different kinds of ZnO whisker was prepared by chemical cross-linking reaction. It was found that the ZnO whiskers dispersed uniformly after being modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The PVA/tetrapod-shaped ZnO (PVA/tetra-ZnO) composites showed better adsorption performance than other kinds of PVA/ZnO composites. The framework-supported pore-channel structure was beneficial for the transmission and adsorption of heavy metal ions, and the formation of “brush” pore-channel of PVA/tetra-ZnO composites can effectively retain and capture the heavy metal ions. The PVA/tetra-ZnO composites presented well adsorption on Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) ions than Ni(II) and showed relatively selective removal on Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions. The adsorbed heavy metal ions presented gradient distribution with high content in the out layer and low content in the inner layer. Pb(II) adsorption capacity q e increased gradually with the increase of initial solution concentration and contact time which tended to be stable at 400 mg/L and 800 min. The maximal adsorption capacity q m obtained by nonlinear fitting reached to about 116 mg/g which was very close to the experiment data. Adsorption isotherm results indicated the monolayer adsorption process of the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetics data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process was spontaneous and the high temperature was in favor of adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was explored as the combination of coordination and ion exchange. Besides, the PVA/tetra-ZnO composites exhibited better stress stability, thermo stability, and favorable regeneration than neat PVA.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels have been widely studied for biomedical applications due to their water solubility, non-toxicity, non-carcinogenicity, and biocompatibility. However, PVA hydrogels prepared by the physical crosslinking method usually do not exhibit a macroporous structure, which limits their application when PVA hydrogels are used alone as a wound dressing. Here, we reported a sponge-like macroporous PVA hydrogel (SPH) prepared by employing polyethylene glycol and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) to enhance phase separation. After being fabricated through cyclic freezing/thawing, the resulting PVA hydrogels possessed macroporous structures. The swelling ratio could reach nearly 1500%, resulting from the excellent water absorption capacity, and the sample could rapidly restore to the original state after being pressed, suggesting a sponge-like characteristic. Furthermore, cell experiments showed that macroporous PVA hydrogels exhibited good biocompatibility and the results of wound closure and H&E analysis consistently indicated that SPHs could significantly promote the wound healing process.

In this paper, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPPAm), polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used to prepare double-network hydrogels by the photo-crosslinking technology. The results from mechanical and swelling tests indicated that photo-crosslinked PVA/CNC/P(NIPPAm-co-AA) hydrogels exhibited temperature-sensitive, pH-sensitive behaviors and good mechanical strengths. We prepared DN hydrogels, which combined the advantages of PNIPAAm, PAA and photo-crosslinking collectively in the PVA/CNC system, leading to controllable temperature and pH responses and improvement in physical properties. A simple and green method for the preparation of DN hydrogels was demonstrated, offering photo-crosslinked PVA/CNC/P(NIPPAm-co-AA) hydrogels as excellent prospects for applications in the medical field.

An efficient electrospun aligned surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and maize-like substrate of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite and Ag colloid nanofibers decorated with thermal evaporated Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been developed by taking advantage of electrostatic interactions. The synergistic effects of the evaporated AgNPs (niblets) and the Ag colloid in PVA (corncob) could arouse strong electromagnetic field between the lateral and vertical nanogaps which has been demonstrated by experiment and finite-different time-domain (FDTD) simulation. In this experiment, the aligned nanofibers possesses an excellent sensitivity by detection of crystal violet (CV) and malachite green (MG) molecule at low concentration. Moreover, the proposed flexible SERS sensor was measured with outstanding uniformity and reproducibility. We also carried out in-situ electrospinning on a curved surface to detect the mixture of Sudan I, CV and MG molecule, which demonstrates that flexible SERS sensor, has enormous potential in accurate and in-situ detection on the complex geometric structure.

The printing and dyeing wastewater has high chromaticity, biorefractory properties, and significant toxicity. In this study, PVDF-PVA/GO was synthesized for dyes’ adsorption with various chemical properties. Incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into the composite substantially enhanced the hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the PVDF membrane. Results indicated that the adsorption efficiencies for rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) are higher than those of methyl orange (MO) and bromocresol green (BCG). At an initial pH of 8, the maximum adsorption capacities for RhB and MB were 11.81 and 9.25 mg/g, respectively, while MO and BCG indicated considerably lower capacities of 0.59 and 0.63 mg/g, respectively. The cyclic utilization of the PVDF-PVA/GO revealed minimal degradation in adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics of the four dyes primarily follow intra-particle diffusion mechanisms, resulting in the binding of dye molecules to the PVDF-PVA/GO membrane through electrostatic interactions. Notably, competitive adsorption phenomena were observed in mixed dye systems, especially between RhB and MB. Comparative analyses indicated an increased adsorption capacity for MB in the mixed dye system, accompanied by a notable reduction in the adsorption capacity of RhB. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the remediation of printing and dyeing wastewater. Graphical abstract
