Improved performance of dye-sensitized solar cells based on modified kaolin/PVDF-HFP composite gel electrolytes

Kaiyue Zhang,Zijian Cui,Guangyu Xing,Yaqing Feng,Shuxian Meng

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) composite gel electrolytes containing variable amounts of modified kaolin were studied in this work. The kaolin was modified with silane coupling agent γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550), and the modified kaolin (M-KL) was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the crystallinity of polymer membranes decreased with the addition of M-KL nanoparticles. The ionic conductivity and diffusion coefficient (I3−) of polymer gel electrolytes (PGEs) reached optimum values of 9.452 × 10−3 S cm−1 and 10.37 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 for 3 wt% M-KL, respectively, which contributed to higher short-circuit current density (Jsc) and photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) of the corresponding DSSCs. The optimum level of η reached 7.48% under the illumination of 100 mW cm−2, an increase of 16.3% compared with the DSSC without M-KL.

Enhanced antifouling performance of hybrid PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with the dual-mode SiO2-g-PDMS nanoparticles

Haiye Wang,Xinzhen Zhao,Chunju He

The polydimethylsiloxane modified silica (SiO 2 -g-PDMS) nanoparticles with hydrophilic core and hydrophobic shell are employed for the hybridization modification of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane to improve the separation and antifouling performances. The results suggest the modified SiO 2 -g-PDMS nanoparticles exhibit improved dispersion and significant amphiphilic characteristics, and the wetting properties of membrane surface and mimetic matrix of hybrid PVDF membranes are distinctly different with the contact angle values at 105° and 15°, respectively. In addition, the added SiO 2 -g-PDMS nanoparticles significantly improve the fouling repulsion and fouling release properties of hybrid PVDF membranes, the anti-adsorption ability and water flux recovery ratio (FRR-W) of hybrid PVDF membranes to the two typical pollutants of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) have been significantly improved. This article aims to provide a simple way to improve the antifouling performance of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane with dual-mode multi-functional modifier.

Durable and self-healing superhydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite coating with in-situ gas compensation function

Zhanjian Liu,Huaiyuan Wang,Xiguang Zhang,Chongjiang Lv,Zhiqiang Zhao,Chijia Wang

A durable and self-healing superhydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polyester-modified silicone resin (PMSR)/microspheric Na 2 CO 3 @SiO 2 coating with WCA of 158   ±   1.5° and low SA of 4   ±   0.5° has been successfully prepared via sol-gel and spraying technique. After 24   h hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), microspheric Na 2 CO 3 @SiO 2 particles with extremely large storage spaces were obtained as reservoirs for the healing agent of POTS. The superhydrophobicity of the prepared coating can be recovered after 10 rubbing/healing test cycles, indicating the excellent self-healing ability. Simultaneously, the prepared coating also possesses gas compensation capability in acidic condition, which can extend superhydrophobic duration by 400%. The gas compensation capability can be mainly attributed to the bubbles generated from the reaction between acid and porous Na 2 CO 3 , hindering water wetting the surface. Moreover, the prepared coating can withstand 4217 friction cycles without obvious surface damage, which is approximately 6 times higher than that of pure PVDF coating. This is mainly due to the combined action of the high adhesion of PMSR, the self-lubrication of PVDF and the surface hierarchical nano/micro wrinkles. The prepared coating also shows prominent superhydrophobic stability under the conditions of acid/alkaline solution (pH   =   1–14) or strong UV exposure (14   days). It is believed that this durable and self-healing superhydrophobic coating is anticipated to open a new avenue to enlarge the application range of superhydrophobic coatings.

Enhancing the permeation and fouling resistance of PVDF microfiltration membranes by constructing an auto-soak surface

Xinzhen Zhao,Changkun Liu

A new kind of hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) microfiltration membrane with an auto-soak surface was fabricated by plasma treatment and interfacial crosslinking to improve the separation efficiency and fouling resistance in water treatment. Based on the anchored hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) network and the porous structure, the modified PVDF membrane was able to exhibit an auto-soak ability. The separation test results showed that to obtain the same separation efficiency, the operating pressure of the modified PVDF membranes was significantly reduced as compared with that of the neat PVDF membrane, due to the decreased permeation resistance. The fouling test results also demonstrated that this auto-soak surface of the PVDF membrane was able to alleviate the irreversible fouling problem during dynamic filtration, and the water flux recovery ratio (FRR) remained above 75% even after three fouling cycles. All these results indicated that the modified PVDF membrane with the auto-soak surface provided a new means for the reduction of the permeation resistance, as well as the membrane fouling problem of the hydrophobic porous membranes.

A modified mussel-inspired method to fabricate TiO2 decorated superhydrophilic PVDF membrane for oil/water separation

Heng Shi,Yi He,Yang Pan,Haihui Di,Guangyong Zeng,Lei Zhang,Chunli Zhang

Binding nanoparticles on complex structured materials surface is an important issue for nanotechnology, such as obtain an superwetting surface. To fabricate a highly nanoparticles decorated polymer membrane with superior surface wettability , a facile and environmentally method stills remains challenge. Taken advantage from the mussel-inspired method, we reported here that the TiO 2 nanoparticles were directly anchored on the surface of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane, making the intrinsic hydrophobic polymer membrane become hydrophilic, what's more, the mussel inspired method was modified by introducing a silane coupling agent KH550, the ability to bind nanoparticles was retained and the as-prepared membrane turn from a common hydrophilic state to superhydrophilic state. Besides, the as-prepared superhydrophilic PVDF membrane could be applied on the separation of various kinds of surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsion with an ultrahigh efficiency nearly 99% and also shows durable oil resistance and antifouling performance, thus make the membrane easily to recycle. In addition, due to the universality of dopamine, this surface modification method should also be applicable on other organic–inorganic hybrid materials.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/hydrophobic nano-silica (H-SiO2) coated superhydrophobic porous materials for water/oil separation

Lei Peng,Wenkang Lei,Ping Yu,Yunbai Luo

The separation of water and oil is a promising work due to the increasing worldwide oil pollution and leakage of chemical solvents. Superhydrophobic porous materials were prepared for their separation. In this work, various porous substrates of copper meshes, filter papers and polyurethane (PU) sponges were chosen to obtain superhydrophobic surfaces. Superhydrophobic surfaces were fabricated by polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and hydrophobic nano-silica particle coatings through a spraying approach. The superhydrophobicity, stability of coatings and oil/water separation effect of these as-coated materials were studied. The results demonstrated that all the surfaces showed high water contact angles (>150°), good reusability and excellent oil selectively. Moreover, the coated filter paper was scaled up for practical use of removing trace water from mineral insulating oil in our group. It is promising that this superhydrophobic coating could be used in more applications.

Photocatalytic antifouling PVDF ultrafiltration membranes based on synergy of graphene oxide and TiO2 for water treatment

Zhiwei Xu,Tengfei Wu,Jie Shi,Kunyue Teng,Wei Wang,Meijun Ma,Jing Li,Xiaoming Qian,Cuiyu Li,Jintu Fan

A novel graphene oxide/TiO 2 -polyvinylidene fluoride (GO/TiO 2 -PVDF) hybrid ultrafiltration membrane has been successfully developed via the phase inversion technique by supplementing with GO/TiO 2 nanocomposites , in which the synergistic coupling of GO and TiO 2 could result in improved photocatalytic activity and endow hybrid membranes with photocatalytic antifouling function. Compared with PVDF membranes supplemented with TiO 2 and GO, respectively, the GO/TiO 2 -PVDF membrane displayed significantly improved photodegradation efficiency (improved about 50–70%) and superior photodegradation kinetics (1.0–1.5 times faster) toward bovine serum albumin (BSA). Moreover, flux performance and flux recovery ratio of membranes revealed that the GO/TiO 2 -PVDF membrane could recover high flux after fouling, which thus presented self-cleaning property under UV static irradiation. Besides, the GO/TiO 2 -PVDF membrane showed a water flux up to 487.8   L   m −2   h −1 , more than 2 times that of the pristine PVDF membrane, while keeping high BSA rejection (92.5%). Therefore, the GO/TiO 2 -PVDF membrane would have good potential in water treatment due to its high-performance multifunctional characters, i.e. separation, photocatalytic oxidation and self-cleaning, etc.

A novel zwitterionic polyelectrolyte grafted PVDF membrane for thoroughly separating oil from water with ultrahigh efficiency

Yuzhang Zhu,Feng Zhang,Dong Wang,Xian Feng Pei,Wenbin Zhang,Jian Jin

Oil–water separation is a worldwide challenge because of increasingly oily wastewater, as well as frequent oil spill accidents. We report in this work the fabrication of a zwitterionic polyelectrolyte brush (poly(3-(N-2-methacryloxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl) ammonatopropanesultone), abbreviated as PMAPS)-grafted poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PMAPS-g-PVDF) membrane via a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) technique for separating oil from water. By tuning polymerization time, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic PMAPS-g-PVDF membrane was successfully prepared. The membrane can be applied for thoroughly separating dispersed oil from water with ultrahigh separation efficiency >99.999% in terms of rejection coefficient. The oil contents after one-time separation of a selection of oil–water mixtures are all less than 10 ppm and some of them are even lower than 2 ppm. These values are much lower than the standard minimum requirements of the international regulations for wastewater discharging. The oil-adhesion force between an oil droplet and the membrane surface was measured to be less than 1 μN. Due to the ultralow oil adhesion, the membrane exhibits an excellent antifouling property to oil and is easily recyclable.

Enhancement of dielectric and electrical properties in BT/SiC/PVDF three-phase composite through microstructure tailoring

Zhenchong Zhang,Yizhuo Gu,Shaokai Wang,Min Li,Jiayu Bi,Zuoguang Zhang

A polymer composite with high dielectric permittivity was prepared by embedding silicon carbide (SiC) whisker with an average diameter of 500   nm–1   μm in poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). However, the high dielectric loss and electrical conductivity of the two-phase composite prohibits its potential applications. Barium titanate (BT) particles with average diameter of 100   nm and 1   μm were incorporated as a third phase to fabricate a three-phase composite. The morphology structure, dielectric and electrical properties before and after the addition of BT particles were investigated. The three-phase composite exhibits largely suppressed dielectric loss and electrical conductivity without sacrificing the high dielectric permittivity, which was extremely hard to be realized for two-phase composite. It is also found that the nano-size BT is more favorable in achieving high dielectric permittivity than the micro-size BT, where their dielectric loss and electrical conductivity are similar. Furthermore, electric modulus analysis confirms the largely suppressed electron conduction process which results in the enhanced dielectric and electrical properties in three-phase composite.

Surface modification of PVDF hollow fiber membrane and its application in membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR)

Feifei Hou,Baoan Li,Minghao Xing,Qin Wang,Liang Hu,Shichang Wang

A novel composite hollow fiber membrane for membrane aerated biofilm rector (MABR) was prepared by coating L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) on the surface of PVDF membrane. MABR process study was conducted to test the performances of the original and modified membranes for 166   days. The results indicate that coated membrane showed 2   times higher gas flux, lower water contact angle (declined from 86.5° to 52°), and significantly improved surface roughness. The modified membrane displayed an excellent MABR performance. Its COD, NH 4 + –N and TN removal efficiencies were kept above 90%, 98.8% and 84.2% during the first 4-month experiment. By tracking experiment at 0.01   MPa, to achieve COD removal efficiency of 85.9%, half an hour is required with the modified membrane, instead of 6   h using the original one. Besides, faster NH 4 + –N and TN removal at 0.01   MPa were also achieved with DOPA composite membrane.

Preparation and characterization of compatible PVDF/PPTA blends by in situ polymerization for separation membrane materials

Li Hongbin,Shi Wenying,Zhang Yufeng,Zhou Rong

Poly( p -phenylene terephtalamide) (PPTA) reinforcing blends are of great scientific interest, however the thermodynamic difference of the components make them incompatible with inferior physical-chemical properties. In this work, with the aim of exploring novel separation membrane materials, PPTA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) reinforcing blends were prepared by a novel reactive blending technique of in situ polymerization (method І), and the conventional solution blending (method Π), respectively. The effects of these two methods on polymers compatibility were investigated and compared through ATR-FTIR, XRD, XPS and FESEM characterization. Thermal stability, surface hydrophilicity and mechanical properties were measured through TG, water contact angle (WCA) and tensile measurements. It was found that stronger intermolecular interaction especially hydrogen bonds between polymer components in in-situ blends prevented PVDF from crystallization and a continuous phase configuration appeared. However, slution blends showed an obvious two-phase structure in FESEM observation which varied from a spherical crystallization of PVDF at low PPTA content to a fibrous-like crystallization of PPTA at high PPTA concentration. Solution blends showed lower hydrophilicity which was attributed to the PPTA crystallization and its perpendicular uniplanar orientation along blend film surface. In-situ blends exhibited higher tensile strength which was due to the better polymers compatibility between the rigid reinforced PPTA molecules and flexible PVDF matrix. The PPTA/PVDF in-situ blend is a promising candidate for the high-performance separation membrane material.

Enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3-nanowire composites induced by interfacial polarization and wire-shape

Y. Feng,W. L. Li,Y. F. Hou,Y. Yu,W. P. Cao,T. D. Zhang,W. D. Fei

Polymer based composites with high dielectric constant were successfully fabricated using BaTiO3 nanowires with high aspect ratio as inorganic filler and PVDF-HFP as polymer matrix. PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanoparticles composites were also prepared as a contrast. The BaTiO3 nanowires were synthesized via one-step hydrothermal method. The BaTiO3 nanowires and its two types of composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. For the composites, breakdown strength measurements, tensile tests and broadband dielectric spectroscopy analyses were also carried out. The results show that the two types of fillers are homogeneously dispersed in the matrix. The dielectric constant of composites filled by BaTiO3 nanowires is larger than that filled by BaTiO3 nanoparticles at the same content. Stronger interfacial polarization was found in PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites. Two theoretical models were employed to predict the dielectric constants of composites, and the experimental data were consistent with the estimated trend. The enhanced dielectric properties of PVDF-HFP/BaTiO3 nanowire composites are attributed to the superior interfacial polarization and high aspect ratio of BaTiO3 nanowires.
