Cu-Thioamide coordination polymers derived Cu-S catalysts for CO2 electroreduction to formate

Honglin Li,Xin Zhang,Yuanyuan Wen,Jingyuan Li,Yu Liu,Hongjun Mao,Hongman Sun,Jingbin Zeng,Zifeng Yan

Sulfur-doped copper (S-doped Cu) was regarded as an efficient catalyst for formate in CO 2 electrochemical reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), but the selectivity and current density are still unsatisfied due to the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO generation pathway. Herein, S-doped Cu nanoparticles were synthesized by in-situ reduction of the constructed Cu-thioamide coordination polymers, exhibiting impressive performance for formate production in the CO 2 RR process. Particularly, the CuBr-thiobenzamide (TBA) coordination polymers derived S-doped Cu nanoparticles (CuBr-TBA-R) achieve a formate Faradaic efficiency of 84.4 % with current density of formate to 6.7 mA cm −2 . The characterization results indicate these generated S-doped Cu nanoparticles are uniform with the particle size of 20–30 nm exposed a large amount of Cu (100) facets due to the coordination of thioamide molecules and presence of Br - and I - in electrolyte. The morphological characteristics and strong affinity for oxygen is the reason of higher formate selectivity and current density. This finding reveals the characterizations of efficient S-doped Cu catalysts for formate and provide a controllable approach to prepare these catalysts.

Benzydamine attenuates microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and ischemic brain injury by targeting cathepsin s

Yuxin Zhang,Lixuan Yang,Yonghui Gan,Chenchen Zhao,Chao Zhou,Jian Chen,Yanping Yin,Shengnan Xia,Haiyan Yang,Xinyu Bao,Meijuan Zhang,Yun Xu,Jingwei Li

Microglia, the primary immune cells of the central nervous system, play a crucial role in the neuroinflammatory processes following ischemic stroke. Targeting neuroinflammation is a promising strategy to enhance the outcomes of ischemic stroke. Benzydamine (BA), a well-known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has demonstrated potential in inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines across various disease models. However, the potential role of BA in microglial activation and post-stroke neuroinflammation remains unclear. Our study reveals that BA effectively suppresses the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated pro-inflammatory responses of primary microglia, with high-dose BA (10 μM) suppressing LPS-induced inflammatory markers by up to 59.1 % in the mRNA levels of IL-1β. Furthermore, BA mitigated ischemic brain injury in experimental stroke mice. BA treatment also significantly attenuated neuroinflammatory responses and attenuates ischemic brain injury in experimental stroke mice. Further investigation revealed that BA reduces the release of the LPS-stimulated pro-inflammatory factors and activation of primary microglia by directly binding to and inhibiting the activity of cathepsin S (CTSS). In conclusion, our study identifies BA as a promising CTSS inhibitor with potential to suppress neuroinflammation following ischemic stroke. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for developing new neuroprotective strategies.

DJ-1 suppresses ferroptosis through preserving the activity of S-adenosyl homocysteine hydrolase

Cao Ji,Chen Xiaobing,Jiang Li,Lu Bin,Yuan Meng,Zhu Difeng,Zhu Hong,He Qiaojun,Yang Bo,Ying Meidan

Ferroptosis is a newly characterized form of regulated cell death mediated by iron-dependent accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species and holds great potential for cancer therapy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis remain largely elusive. In this study, we define an integrative role of DJ-1 in ferroptosis. Inhibition of DJ-1 potently enhances the sensitivity of tumor cells to ferroptosis inducers both in vitro and in vivo. Metabolic analysis and metabolite rescue assay reveal that DJ-1 depletion inhibits the transsulfuration pathway by disrupting the formation of the S-adenosyl homocysteine hydrolase tetramer and impairing its activity. Consequently, more ferroptosis is induced when homocysteine generation is decreased, which might be the only source of glutathione biosynthesis when cystine uptake is blocked. Thus, our findings show that DJ-1 determines the response of cancer cells to ferroptosis, and highlight a candidate therapeutic target to potentially improve the effect of ferroptosis-based antitumor therapy.

Metal-ion exsolution effect to accelerate the reaction kinetics in Li–S batteries

Hongxu Zhou,Weichen Han,Hongquan Chai,Hao Huang,Jingang Zheng,Han Zhang,Lixiang Li,Weimin Zhou,Baigang An,Chengguo Sun

Sluggish reaction kinetics in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has seriously hindered their practical application. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) granular carbon skeleton decorated with nickel-rich NCM materials (NCM@3D-SP) is prepared as a cathode host for Li–S batteries, where the carbon matrix is rich in pore channels, can provide good conductivity and electrolyte diffusion, and NCM811 particles contribute abundant metal sulfides active sites through metal-ion exsolution. The different metal sulfides (NiS, Ni3S2, Ni7S6, and CoS) in heterogeneous structures exhibit outstanding catalytic and adsorption effects on polysulfides during cycling, where the ion diffusion coefficient is increased by approximately 2.5 times compared to the cathode without catalytic active sites (3D-SP). A Li metal battery using NCM@3D-SP/S as the cathode exhibits a capacity decay of only 0.051% per cycle at 2C after 500 cycles. Even at an ultra-high current density of 10C and a sulfur-loading of 6 mg cm−2, the cells maintain a stable reversible discharge capacity of 453.1 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles and 4 mA h cm−2. The incorporation of nickel-rich cathode materials and 3D sulfur host structure presents a novel strategy for high-catalytic activity cathodes of Li–S batteries.

MOF-derived In2O3/TiO2 S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Alamgir,Raza Ullah,Khalid Talha,Hongye Yang,Nouraiz Mushtaq,Abrar Ahmad,Linkun Fan,Lan Li,Guixia Zhao,Xusheng Wang,Junkuo Gao

It is challenging to engineer a photocatalyst that can degrade antibiotics efficiently. We have successfully developed a series of photocatalysts by annealing In-MOF (BUT-205) with TiO 2 , namely (a) In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -I, (b) In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -II, and (c) In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -III. These catalysts, particularly In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -III, exhibited superior efficiency in degrading tetracycline (TC) under visible light. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -III can be attributed to the formed S-scheme heterojunction, which promoting the separation of electron-hole pairs. The S-scheme heterojunction was confirmed by XPS , in-situ XPS, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and Mott-Schottky plot, etc. Compared to pure TiO 2 and In 2 O 3 , the In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -III demonstrated an 18-fold and 3-fold higher degradation rate constant (k). Various factors affecting the degradation of TC were investigated, including pollutant concentration, catalyst type, solution pH, catalyst dosage, inorganic anions , inorganic cations , and radical species. Photoluminescence (PL) and transient photocurrent density evaluate the separation rate of electron-hole pairs, and EPR experiments (active species trapping) studies confirmed •O 2 − and h + as the primary entities in TC photodegradation by In 2 O 3 /TiO 2 -III. HPLC/MS analysis revealed the photocatalytic degradation pathway. The MOF-derived photocatalysts efficiency in TC photoreduction results from the formed S-scheme heterojunction, making it a promising candidate for environmental remediation.

Preparation of Co/S co-doped carbon catalysts for excellent methylene blue degradation

Li Haixu,He Haobo,Jiang Tiannan,Du Yunfei,Wu Zhichen,Xu Liang,Wang Xinjie,Liu Xiaoguang,Yu Wanhua,Xue Wendong

S and Co co-doped carbon catalysts were prepared via pyrolysis of MOF-71 and thiourea mixtures at 800°C at a mass ratio of MOF-71 to thiourea of 1:0.1 to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for methylene blue (MB) degradation. The effects of two different mixing routes were identified on the MB degradation performance. Particularly, the catalyst obtained by the alcohol solvent evaporation (MOF-AEP) mixing route could degrade 95.60% MB (50 mg/L) within 4 min (degradation rate: K = 0.78 min −1 ), which was faster than that derived from the direct grinding method (MOF-DGP, 80.97%, K = 0.39 min −1 ). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the Co–S content of MOF-AEP (43.39at%) was less than that of MOF-DGP (54.73at%), and the proportion of C–S–C in MOF-AEP (13.56at%) was higher than that of MOF-DGP (10.67at%). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the adsorption energy of Co for PMS was −2.94 eV when sulfur was doped as C–S–C on the carbon skeleton, which was higher than that when sulfur was doped next to cobalt in the form of Co–S bond (−2.86 eV). Thus, the C–S–C sites might provide more contributions to activate PMS compared with Co–S. Furthermore, the degradation parameters, including pH and MOF-AEP dosage, were investigated. Finally, radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements revealed that 1 O 2 might be the primary catalytic species, whereas ·O 2− might be the secondary one in degrading MB.

Photoluminescence characteristics of BaS:Eu,Dy and the mechanism affected by S-related defects

Qingxue Zhao,Xiaoxia Duan,Tian Tian,Lixin Yi

BaS:Eu,Dy phosphors were prepared by high temperature solid-state method with BaSO 4 as matrix raw material, Eu 2 O 3 and Dy 2 O 3 or Eu 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O and Dy 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O as doped ion raw materials. BaSO 4 can be completely reduced after 3 h sintering at 1200 °C in CO atmosphere and pure BaS was obtained in one step. Meanwhile, the rare earth ions were embedded in the host lattices and had no impact on the main structure of the products. However, X-ray diffraction peaks shift shows rare earth doping can cause lattice distortion with the increase of sintering temperature . The luminescence characteristics of BaS:Eu,Dy, BaS:Eu, BaS:Dy and BaS are compared in order to study the luminescence mechanism. It is confirmed that the broad emission locating in the near-infrared (NIR) region should be assigned to 4f 6 5 d 1 →4f 7 transition of Eu 2+ , and the emission locating in the visible region comes from S-related defects in the matrix. Sulfur-rich is particularly detrimental to NIR luminescence. In relatively S-rich systems, there is serious energy transfer between Eu 2+ and S-related defects, which leads to fluorescence quenching. The products are in S-rich state when Eu 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O and Dy 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·8H 2 O are selected as raw materials of doped ions. BaS:Eu,Dy inclines to emit visible light with the sintering temperature increasing. By contrast, the products are in Sulfur-deficiency state when Eu 2 O 3 and Dy 2 O 3 are used as raw materials of doped ions and BaS:Eu,Dy only gives NIR emission.

Photothermal-assisted S-scheme heterojunction of Cu3SnS4/Mn0.3Cd0.7S for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production

Ruiqi Zhang,Runcheng Liu,Zhihan Ding,Jinzhu Ma,Tao Wang,Dafeng Zhang,Junchang Liu,Peiqing Cai,Xipeng Pu

Photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is regarded as an economically viable and environmentally benign strategy. However, the practical application of photocatalytic hydrogen production is constrained by the sluggish reaction kinetics and rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a Cu 3 SnS 4 /Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S (CTS/MCS) S-scheme photocatalyst with photothermal effect was synthesized via an ultrasound-assisted self-assembly method and applied for the first time to photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The hydrogen production rate of CTS/MCS-5 reached 72.5 ± 0.8 mmol/h g −1 , representing a 3.44-fold increase relative to Mn 0.3 Cd 0.7 S, and the apparent quantum yield of CTS/MCS-5 reached 17.5 % at 450 nm. The photothermal effect induced by Cu 3 SnS 4 can elevate the local surface temperature of the catalyst, providing a portion of the energy required for the reaction, thereby reducing the reaction barrier and further promoting photocatalytic reactions. This research highlights the significance of the S-scheme heterojunction and the photothermal effect as an effective strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity, offering new insights for the development of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution technology.

Spinning of Carbon Nanofiber/Ni–Cu–S Composite Nanofibers for Supercapacitor Negative Electrodes

Qiong Li,Yu Wang,Ganghui Wei,Xiaorong Fang,Ni Lan,Yonggang Zhao,Qiming Liu,Shumei Lin,Deyan He

The preparation of composite carbon nanomaterials is one of the methods for improving the electrochemical performance of carbon-based electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, traditional preparation methods are complicated and time-consuming, and the binder also leads to an increase in impedance and a decrease in specific capacitance. Therefore, in this work, we reduced Ni-Cu nanoparticles on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by employing an electrostatic spinning method combined with pre-oxidation and annealing treatments. At the same time, Ni-Cu nanoparticles were vulcanized to Ni–Cu–S nanoparticles without destroying the structure of the CNFs. The area-specific capacitance of the CNFs/Ni–Cu–S–300 electrode reaches 1208 mF cm−2at a current density of 1 mA cm−2, and the electrode has a good cycling stability with a capacitance retention rate of 76.5% after 5000 cycles. As a self-supporting electrode, this electrode can avoid the problem of the poor adhesion of electrode materials and the low utilization of active materials due to the inactivity of the binder and conductive agent in conventional collector electrodes, so it has excellent potential for application.

S-scheme heterojunction of CoMoO4/PCN with lower overpotential for photocatalytic water oxidation

Yixian Zang,Xiaorong Cai,Shaohong Zang,Lili Ji,Feng Lin,Tong Wang,Xue Dang,Senyang Yu,Shaozheng Zhang,Liuye Mo

Photocatalytic water splitting is one of the effective ways to solve environmental problems and energy crisis. However, the sloughy kinetics of 4e - transfer in water oxidation reaction (WOR) severely limits the efficiency of overall water splitting. Herein, S-scheme heterojunction is constructed by decorating cobalt molybdate on polymeric carbon nitride (CoMoO 4 /PCN) to accelerate the carrier kinetics in WOR. The CoMoO 4 /PCN heterojunction is characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS and electrochemical tests. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that S-scheme heterojunction increases the charge transfer kinetics and the photo-redox ability. Moreover, the decreased Gibbs free energies of intermediate species scale down the overpotential of WOR. Therefore, 2 wt% CoMoO 4 /PCN exhibits outstanding O 2 evolution rate of 34.6 (λ > 300 nm) and 6.2 μmol h −1 (λ > 420 nm), which are 10.8 and 3.6 times than PCN, respectively. This study reveals the key characteristics of PCN by using charge conducting materials to regulate carrier dynamics, which will lay a foundation for the development of photocatalytic O 2 reaction.

Ultrafast electron transfer at the In2O3/Nb2O5 S-scheme interface for CO2 photoreduction

Deng Xianyu,Zhang Jianjun,Qi Kezhen,Liang Guijie,Xu Feiyan,Yu Jiaguo

Constructing S-scheme heterojunctions proves proficient in achieving the spatial separation of potent photogenerated charge carriers for their participation in photoreactions. Nonetheless, the restricted contact areas between two phases within S-scheme heterostructures lead to inefficient interfacial charge transport, resulting in low photocatalytic efficiency from a kinetic perspective. Here, In 2 O 3 /Nb 2 O 5 S-scheme heterojunctions are fabricated through a straightforward one-step electrospinning technique, enabling intimate contact between the two phases and thereby fostering ultrafast interfacial electron transfer (<10 ps), as analyzed via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. As a result, powerful photo-electrons and holes accumulate in the Nb 2 O 5 conduction band and In 2 O 3 valence band, respectively, exhibiting extended long lifetimes and facilitating their involvement in subsequent photoreactions. Combined with the efficient chemisorption and activation of stable CO 2 on the Nb 2 O 5 , the resulting In 2 O 3 /Nb 2 O 5 hybrid nanofibers demonstrate improved photocatalytic performance for CO 2 conversion.

ZnMnCo-S nanoneedle arrays as battery-type eletrodes for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Hongtao Wang,Kun Zhao,Yanqun Shao,Shengtao Xiao,Zhiguang Yang,Zhe Chen,Kongfa Chen,Yunxiang Chen,Deyuan Lin

Transition metal sulfides are used in the field of supercapacitors due to their remarkable electrical conductivity and superior energy density . However, few research has been conducted on how the sulfidation process affects the structure and electrochemical properties of electrodes. The nanoneedle array Zn-Mn-Co sulfide (ZMC-S/NF) electrode is prepared by directly growing on nickel foam (NF) via a two-step hydrothermal technique. During the first step, the Zn-Mn-Co carbonate hydroxide nanoneedle skeleton can be obtained. During the second step, the nanoneedle skeletons are etched, and rough nanoneedle arrays are created by the introduced sulfur ions,i.e., the sulfidation process. The ZMC-S/NF electrode exhibits a specific capacity of 1401.0 C g −1 at 2 A g −1 . It still has excellent rate performance with a specific capacity of 1015.3 C g −1 at 20 A g −1 . Moreover, it exhibits excellent cycling stability with 81.9% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. ZMC-S/NF as the cathode and activated carbon (AC) as the anode are assembled to be a hybrid supercapacitor (HSC), which has an energy density of 43.4 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 700.4 W kg −1 . The effect of adding Zn and Mn to the Co 3 S 4 on energy band structure and density of states during the sulfidation process is calculated by the DFT. The HSC devices constructed by two series-connected ZMC-S/NF//AC can light a star made by ten 1.8 V-red Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for 10 minutes.
