Interesterified trans-free fats rich in sn-2 nervonic acid prepared using Acer truncatum oil, palm stearin and palm kernel oil, and their physicochemical properties

Peng Hu,Xuebing Xu,Liangli Lucy Yu

This study obtained trans -free fats containing nervonic acid, a fatty acid with beneficial effects for mental health. Four fats containing 1.28–2.41% (w/w) nervonic acid were prepared by chemical or enzymatic interesterification of palm stearin (PS), Acer truncatum oil (ATO) and palm kernel oil (PKO). The chemical procedure was catalyzed using MeONa, whereas the enzymatic procedure was catalyzed with a 1,3–specific lipase. As a result, the interesterified fats showed a similar fatty acid profile to their corresponding physical blends measured by gas chromatography , but contained more nervonic acids at the sn -2 position, which was more conducive to metabolism and absorption. The content of tripalmitoylglycerol (PPP) and 1,3-dipalmitoyl-2-oleoyl glycerol (POP) or 1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-oleoyl glycerol (PPO) in the interesterified fats decreased significantly, resulting in improved plasticities. All interesterified fats showed a satisfactory content of tocopherols and oxidative stability. A combination of differential scanning calorimetry , X-ray diffraction spectroscopy and polarized light microscopy results suggested that the interesterified fats formed spherulitic needle-like crystals in the β′ form, while the physical blends formed dendritic crystals in the β form. These data indicated that the trans -free interesterified fats rich in nervonic acid may have a great potential in margarine applications.

Dion–Jacobson-Phase 2D Sn-Based Perovskite Comprising a High Dipole Moment of π-Conjugated Short-Chain Organic Spacers for High-Performance Solar Cell Applications

Jie Qian,Yawen Li,Yifan Shen,Xiangqing Zhao,Chong Wu,Hao Gu,Zhipeng Zhang,Yanfeng Chen,Bo Cai,Junmin Xia,Wei Shen,Kun Cao,Lihui Liu,Lijun Zhang,Gang Cheng,Shufen Chen,Guichuan Xing,Wei Huang

The stability issue of Sn-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is expected to be resolved by involving a two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. However, Sn-based 2D PSCs, especially Dion–Jacobson (DJ)-phase ones with potentially good stability, have rarely been reported. Herein, superior DJ-phase Sn 2D perovskites with 3-aminobenzylamine (3ABA2+) or 4-aminobenzylamine (4ABA2+) π-conjugated short-chain ligands are reported to fabricate efficient 2D lead-free PSCs. Notably, the high dipole moment of the 3ABAI2 organic spacer is approved to possess faster charge transfer for forming (3ABA)FA4Sn5I16 2D perovskite with an extremely low exciton binding energy (only 84 meV). In combination with a diacetate partial substitution and methylamine iodide/bromide (MAI/MABr) post-treatment strategy to delay crystallization and improve compactness and coverage of the perovskite film, a record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.81% and stability of 840 h (less than 5% degradation in a N2 atmosphere for unencapsulated devices) are acquired in eventual (3ABA)FA4Sn5I16 2D PSCs, which are among the highest PCE and the longest stability of Sn-based 2D PSCs reported to date. Our work provides a prospective molecule design and film preparation strategy of 2D Sn perovskites toward nontoxic high-performance tin-based PSCs, which pushes the almost stagnant research forward.

Biomass-Derived Carbon Quantum Dots Chemical Bonding with Sn-Doped Bi2O2CO3 Endowed Fast Carriers’ Dynamics and Stabilized Oxygen Vacancies for Efficient Decontamination of Combined Pollutants

Tingting Zhu,Zuofang Yao,Jinghui Pan,Fengtao Hu,Shiming Zhang,Songyu Fan,Chenchen Xing,Zebin Yu,Shuangfei Wang,Yanping Hou

Surface defects on photocatalysts could promote carrier separation and generate unsaturated sites for chemisorption and reactant activation. Nevertheless, the inactivation of oxygen vacancies (OVs) would deteriorate catalytic activity and limit the durability of defective materials. Herein, bagasse-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are loaded on the Sn-doped Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 (BOC) via hydrothermal procedure to create Bi─O─C chemical bonding at the interface, which not only provides efficient atomic-level interfacial electron channels for accelerating carriers transfer, but also enhances durability. The optimized Sn-BOC/CQDs-2 achieves the highest photocatalytic removal efficiencies for levofloxacin (LEV) (88.7%) and Cr (VI) (99.3%). The elimination efficiency for LEV and Cr (VI) from the Sn-BOC/CQDs-2 is maintained at 55.1% and 77.0% while the Sn-BOC is completely deactivated after four cycle tests. Furthermore, the key role of CQDs in stabilization of OVs is to replace OVs as the active center of H 2 O and O 2 adsorption and activation, thereby preventing reactant molecules from occupying OVs. Based on theoretical calculations of the Fukui index and intermediates identification, three possible degradation pathways of LEV are inferred. This work provides new insight into improving the stability of defective photocatalysts.

Promoting tin into the framework of β zeolite via stabilizing Sn species and its catalytic performance for the conversion of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone

Hongjin Qu,Tianliang Lu,Xiaomei Yang,Lipeng Zhou

Tin-containing β zeolite exhibits excellent catalytic performance in various biomass conversions to high-value chemicals due to its strong Lewis (L) acidity produced by framework Sn 4+ sites. However, it is difficult to incorporate Sn species into the framework of β zeolite due to that the ionic radius of Sn (0.69 Å) is larger than that of Si (0.40 Å). Herein, organic additives with carbonyl, hydroxyl , aldehyde or amine groups were used to stabilize Sn species in the gel and framework Sn 4+ in the zeolite. Among all additives, acetone (AC) has the best stabilizing effect on Sn species. The stabilization effect between AC and Sn 4+ sites was observed by FT-IR. The characterization results indicate that more tin species were incorporated into β framework and the L acid density increased due to the complexation between carbonyl group and Sn species. Compared to Sn-β-3d synthesized without additive, the L acid density of Sn-β-AC-3d increased by ∼50% (from 21 μmol g −1 to 34 μmol g −1 ). For the conversion of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone, the reaction reached equilibrium faster over Sn-β-AC-3d than over Sn-β-3d at the investigated reaction temperatures. A yield of 98% was obtained over Sn-β-AC-3d at 110 °C. Besides, Sn-β-AC-3d exhibited good stability and reusability.

Separations of neutron poisons Sm, Nd, Ru, Rh, and Pd from spent nuclear fuel by NH3/HCl gas mixture treatment coupled with liquid Sn extraction

Tao Jiang,Ming Cheng,Yujiao Wang,Shaoqiang Guo,Wentao Zhou,Yafei Wang

The selective removal of neutron-absorbing fission products from spent nuclear fuel is critical for enhancing neutron economy and enabling efficient recycling. In this work, we present a novel two-step dry reprocessing strategy that integrates NH 3 /HCl gas mixture treatment with liquid Sn extraction to achieve phase-selective separation of Sm, Nd, Ru, Rh, and Pd from simulated U 3 O 8 -based spent fuel. Thermodynamic analysis and experimental validation reveal that decomposition of NH 4 Cl at elevated temperatures serves as the generator of NH 3 /HCl gas mixture capable of selectively chlorinating Sm 2 O 3 and Nd 2 O 3 into soluble chlorides while reducing U 3 O 8 to UO 2 and converting RuO 2 , Rh 2 O 3 , and PdO to their metallic states (Ru, Rh, Pd). Subsequent dissolution tests in LiCl-KCl confirm that Sm and Nd are almost completely removed, with chlorination efficiencies of nearly 100%, while uranium loss can be minimized by controlling direct NH 4 Cl contact. The coupled liquid Sn extraction at 1173 K enabled the recoveries of metallic Rh, Rh, and Pd with a promising extraction efficiency. This integrated approach significantly simplifies the partitioning of key neutron poisons (Sm, Nd, Ru, Rh, Pd) compared to conventional aqueous or pyrochemical routes, reduces secondary waste, and preserves uranium in its UO 2 form.

PEO-SA-NaTFSI-Based Binder with Enhanced Adhesion, Fast Ion Transport, and Robust Solid-Electrolyte Interphase for Sn Anodes Enabling High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Hanxin Qian,Zhan Wu,Zhouyu Huang,Menglu Lu,Jiayuan Xiang,Fangfang Tu,Zheyu Jin,Jianping Xu,Yongping Gan,Xinping He,Hui Huang,Xinhui Xia,Yang Xia,Wenkui Zhang,Jun Zhang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage due to their high cost-effectiveness and safety. Alloy anodes exhibit significantly higher specific capacities compared to those of carbonaceous anode materials, holding great promise for enhancing the energy density of SIBs. However, their practical application is severely hindered by substantial volume expansion, sluggish reaction kinetics, and continuous fracture reformation of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, a multifunctional composite binder system was designed for the Sn anode, which was composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), sodium alginate (SA), and sodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI). The PEO-SA-NaTFSI (PSN) binder integrates ternary synergistic functions: robust adhesion between the active material and current collector, enhanced Na+ transport kinetics, and formation of a stable NaF-rich SEI. Therefore, the Sn-PSN anode achieves an outstanding sodium storage performance with a high capacity of 583.4 mA h g–1 at a current density of 10 A g–1 and 77% capacity retention after 1500 cycles. In addition, the Sn-PSN||Na3V2(PO4)3 full battery can maintain 81% capacity after 200 cycles with an electrode energy density of 169.0 W h kg–1. This work provides a multifunctional binder design strategy with broad application prospects for high-performance anodes of SIBs.

Synergistic N/O coordination-driven selective separation and dynamic enrichment of Sn(IV) from strongly acidic multi-ion media using a covalent phosphazene-based silica composite

Haixuan Liang,FeiFei Wang,ShuiQing Ji,Bihong Chen,Libo Yang,Xinpeng Wang

Precise separation and dynamic enrichment of Sn(IV) from complex strongly acidic waste liquids are important for strategic metal recovery, but remain challenging because high acidity and competing ions can severely weaken adsorption selectivity. Herein, a covalent phosphazene-based silica composite adsorbent, CPP-O/SiO 2 , was prepared through the in situ solvothermal polymerization of cyanuric acid and hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene on porous SiO 2 . The SiO 2 support preserved a regular spherical morphology and favorable column adaptability, while the CPP-O network supplied abundant N/O coordination sites. CPP-O/SiO 2 retained high Sn(IV) removal efficiencies above 95% in 0.5–1 M HNO 3 and achieved approximately 98% Sn(IV) removal in a simulated acidic multi-ion matrix mimicking waste printed circuit board (WPCB) leachate/high-level liquid waste (HLLW). Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 120 min, and the saturated adsorption capacity reached 188.41 mg/g at 318 K. Fixed-bed column experiments further demonstrated selective dynamic retention and enrichment of Sn(IV) from simulated HLLW, giving an enrichment factor of approximately 116 after elution with 0.1 M NaOH and maintaining stable performance over eight adsorption–desorption cycles. FT-IR, XPS, and DFT analyses revealed that Sn(IV) capture was mainly governed by synergistic coordination involving O and N sites, especially Sn O interactions. This work provides a robust covalent composite adsorbent for selective Sn(IV) recovery from strongly acidic multi-ion media.

Determination of Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Hf, Ta, and W in seawater by N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine extraction chromatographic resin and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry

Shengling Sun,Jie Li

A method has been developed for the determination of zirconium (Zr), hafnium (Hf), niobium (Nb), tantalum (Ta), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W), and tin (Sn) in seawater by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (Q-ICP-MS). The method is based on separation of the seven elements by extraction chromatography using N-benzoyl-N-phenylhydroxylamine (BPHA) supported on a microporous acrylic ester polymeric resin. The optimized procedure indicates that the BPHA resin has high selective adsorption for Zr, Nb, Mo, Sn, Hf, Ta, and W (known as fluoride soluble elements), whereas other interference and matrix elements are minimally adsorbed. The optimized eluent mixture with their molarity gives satisfactory recoveries for all analytes. The recovery can be achieved 99% for Zr, 97% for Nb, 97% for Mo, 99% for Sn, 99% for Hf, 95% for Ta, and 98% for W, respectively, by eluting with 6   mL of 6   mol   L −   1 HF/1   mol   L −   1 HCl. Furthermore, the technique for separation and enrichment of these elements provides a low total method blank. The detection limits for this method are 0.5   ppt for Zr, 0.2   ppt for Nb, 1.7   ppt for Mo, 1.0   ppt for Sn, 0.1   ppt for Hf, 0.1   ppt for Ta, and 0.3   ppt for W, respectively. The validity of the method is evaluated by replicate analyses of seawater reference materials; the precision of the results is better than 3% (RSD, n   =   4), and the results are in good agreement with certified values. The established procedure has proved to be both practical and effective for seawater sample analyses.

Preparation and characterization of PMT-TiO2-NTs@NiO–C/Sn–Sb composite electrodes by a two-step pulsed electrodeposition method for the degradation of crystalline violet

Anqi Li,Xuening Bai,Yuting Xie,Pengyang Xia,Hebin Bao,Miao He,Xuzhong Zeng,Wenjing Yang,Xueming Li

To overcome the limitations imposed by Sn–Sb electrodes, the titanium foam (PMT)-TiO 2 -NTs@NiO–C/Sn–Sb composite electrodes with cubic crystal structure are synthesized by introducing NiO@C nanosheet arrays interlayer on the TiO 2 -NTs/PMT matrix through hydrothermal and carbonization process. Then a two-step pulsed electrodeposition method is used to prepare the Sn–Sb coating. Benefiting from the advantages of stacked 2D layer-sheet structure, the obtained electrodes exhibit enhanced stability and conductivity. Synergy of inner and outer layers fabricated by different pulse times strongly influence the electrochemical catalytic properties of the PMT-TiO 2 -NTs@NiO–C/Sn–Sb (Sn–Sb) electrode. Hence, the Sn–Sb (b0.5 h + w1 h) electrode is the optimal electrode to degrade the Crystalline Violet (CV). Next, the effect of the four experimental parameters (initial CV concentration, current density, pH value and supporting electrolyte concentration) on the degradation of CV by the electrode are investigated. The degradation of the CV is more sensitive to alkaline pH, and the rapid decolorization of CV when the pH is 10. Moreover, the possible electrocatalytic degradation pathway of CV is performed using HPLC-MS. Results from the tests show that the PMT-TiO 2 -NTs/NiO@C/Sn–Sb (b0.5 h + w1 h) electrode is an interesting alternative material in industrial wastewater applications.

Surface treatment by crystalline Co-P coating with ultra-thin CoTe2 layer for improved electrical and mechanical properties of the n-type Bi2Te3/Sn TEG electrode

Shuang Liu,Limin Ma,Cheng Zhen,Dan Li,Yishu Wang,Qiang Jia,Fu Guo

Bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric generators (TEG) were widely used in the clean recovery of waste heat, but frequent failure problems at the hot-end electrode interface limited the reliable service of TEGs. Diffusion at the electrode interface between n-type Bi 2 Te 3 and Sn-based solder seriously damaged the performance of the TEGs. In this work, the crystalline Co-4 at.% P coating was deposited to protect the n-type thermoelectric material Bi 2 Te 3 . The microstructural characterization proved that the Co-P coating effectively resisted the diffusion of Sn, Bi, Te and Cu atoms, and prevented the generation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMC) and cracks at the interface. Ultra-thin CoTe 2 layer was formed between Co-P and Bi 2 Te 3 , much thinner than the brittle Ni-Te layer reported in the literatures. It not only showed that a good metallurgical bond was formed between Co-P and Bi 2 Te 3 , but also implied the Co-P only consumed little thermoelectric elements. After the 150-hour aging test at 423 K, the shear strength of the electrode joints did not decrease, and the power generation sustainability of thermoelectric pillars was significantly improved compared with uncoated pillars. Overall, the crystalline Co-P coating would be an excellent candidate to protect the n-type Bi 2 Te 3 pillars of the TEGs.

Plum Pudding-Like Electrocatalyst of N-Doped SnOx@Sn Loaded on Carbon Matrix to Construct Photovoltaic CO2 Reduction System with Solar-to-Fuel Efficiency of 11.3%

Kaiqin Xu,Shangbo Ning,Huayu Chen,Shuxin Ouyang,Jianbo Wang,Lizhu Song,Jun Lv,Jinhua Ye

A plum pudding-like Sn-based electrocatalyst is synthesized by calcinating the precursor SnC 2 O 4 on carbon black (CB) with polymeric carbon nitride (CN). This material exhibits a structure of a Sn metallic ball coated with a nitrogen-doped SnO x native layer (N-doped SnO x @Sn) embedded on a carbon matrix. The carbon matrix originates from the CB and the polymeric CN decomposition promotes electrical conductivity, leading to high electrochemical activity of the CN–Sn catalyst. The introduction of nitrogen that occupies the interstitial space of the surface SnO x layer further enhances electron transport; furthermore, it provides an electron-rich environment for oxygen because of its lower electronegativity, which is the fundamental cause of selectivity in the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to CO. The maximum CO Faradaic efficiency over the optimal catalyst reaches 57.5%, with a high CO partial current density of 6.09 mA cm −2 at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. This catalyst is further applied to construct a photovoltaic–electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction/oxygen evolution reaction device to stably convert CO 2 to chemicals over 6 h at a high solar-to-fuel efficiency of 11.3%. This work explores a strategy of rational modulation on surface electronic structure to obtain high-performance electrocatalysts, inspiring the selectivity tuning in electrochemical CO 2 reduction via electronegativity difference of various elements.

Sn doping in In2O3-x nanoparticle achieving its synergy with oxygen vacancy towards high-efficiency electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and upcycling of spent liquid crystal display panels

Zhiyuan Ren,Bin Li,Yufeng Wu,Hui Liu,Feng Guo,Shaonan Tian,Jun Yang

Converting electronic waste into high-value catalytic materials is an effective strategy for reducing dependence on rare resources and enhancing sustainability. Herein, we synthesize fine-sized Sn-doped In 2 O 3-x particles with oxygen vacancies (Vo) using leachate from spent liquid crystal display panels (LCDPs) for efficient electrochemical CO 2 reduction (eCO 2 RR). Specifically, In 3+ and Sn 4+ ions from LCDPs leachate are coordinated with dodecylamine’s –NH 2 and transferred to the organic phase, followed by oleic acid modification to form the compounds (M−DDA−OA). Sn-doped Vo-rich In 2 O 3-x derived from LCDPs (rVo/LCDPs) can be synthesized by converting M−DDA−OA via a wet-chemistry process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that Sn doping and Vo in In 2 O 3-x synergistically enhance CO 2 adsorption and activation, facilitating the formation of *OCHO intermediates and achieving a maximum formate Faradaic efficiency (FE formate ) of 94.6 % for rVo/LCDPs at − 1.07 V vs RHE. This study highlights the potential for low-cost, high-performance In-based catalysts from spent LCDPs.
