Synergistic effect of atomically dispersed Cu species and Ti-defects for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction over hierarchical TiO2

Peijiao Chen,Zhijun Li,Pengze Wang,Yuxin Yao,Tianwei Dou,Yang Qu,Liqiang Jing

The photocatalytic water-mediated CO2 reduction reaction, which holds great promise for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals, is often hindered by inefficient separation of photogenerated charges and a lack of suitable catalytic sites. Herein, we have developed a glycerol coordination assembly approach to precisely control the distribution of atomically dispersed Cu species by occupying Ti-defects and adjusting the ratio between Cu species and Ti-defects in a hierarchical TiO2. The optimal sample demonstrates a ∼4-fold improvement in CO2-to-CO conversion compared to normal TiO2 nanoparticles. The high activity could be attributed to the Ti defects, which enhance the photogenerated charge separation and simultaneously facilitate the adsorption of water molecules, thereby promoting the water oxidation reaction. Moreover, by means of in situ EPR and FTIR spectra, we have demonstrated that Cu species can effectively capture photogenerated electrons and facilitate the adsorption of CO2, so as to catalyze the reduction of CO2. This work provides a strategy for the construction of atomic-level synergistic catalytic sites and the utilization of in situ techniques to reveal the underlying mechanism.

Modulation of d–d orbital interactions in Ti–Ni–N4 coordination introduces dynamic bonding for enhanced CO2 photoreduction

Zhi Song-Song,Zou Xiao-Xiao,Lei Jin-Ye,Zhang Lu,Li Zi-Han,Gu Wan-Nuo,Ullah Fahim,Guo Hong,Wu Da-Peng

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction using atomically dispersed catalysts holds significant potential for addressing global energy and environmental challenges. However, the influence of d–d orbital interactions between metal centers and coordinated atoms remains underexplored. Herein, nickel phthalocyanine is anchored to the metal-exposed crystal face of TiO 2 , forming Ti–Ni–N 4 coordination. This configuration reveals that the axially coordinated Ti atoms serve as a novel electron channel with electron-donating ability, transferring electrons to the Ni center through d–d coupling. It is found that the dynamic adjustment of bond lengths and d-band centers in Ti–Ni bonding during CO 2 photoreduction process can effectively modulate the adsorption strengths of the Ni center for different intermediates. This leads to a significant enhancement in the photocatalytic performance for CO 2 reduction to CO without a sacrificial reagent, achieving an exceptional CO evolution rate of 378.5 μmol g −1 . Furthermore, the d–d coupling mediated by Ti–Ni–N 4 coordination increases the vacancy formation energy of active sites, preventing the leaching of Ni active centers. This study provides a strategy for the precise design of d–d orbital regulation and resistance to demetallization in photocatalysts for efficient CO 2 conversion. Graphic abstract

High sensitive optical fiber SPR biosensor enhanced by Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene for label-free detecting Staphylococcus aureus

Chao Zhao,Jiayi Zhu,Xingye Ma,Jiaqi Sun,Ning Wang,Xi Chen,Xiaohan Chen,Yihao Wang,Chuanquan Wang,Xinyue Jing

Rapid and accurate pathogen detection is critical for optimizing clinical decision-making within precision medicine frameworks, specifically for identifying Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in wound infections. Most of conventional detection methods suffer from procedural complexity, protracted analysis times, and insufficient sensitivity, thereby constraining their clinical deployment. In this work, an optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor enhanced by Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene was developed for detecting S. aureus , biofunctionalized with goat anti-human immunoglobulin G (IgG). The optimal thickness of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layer, determined to be approximately 94 nm based on maximizing figure of merit (FOM) of 17.88 RIU −1 , yielded high sensitivity and low full width at half maximum (FWHM). By monitoring SPR wavelength shifts in the transmission spectra, the sensor was employed to detect S. aureus with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.14 CFU/mL and a high sensitivity of 3.063 nm/log (CFU/mL). It exhibited excellent linearity across the concentration range of 10 2 –10 8  CFU/mL, alongside high stability and selectivity. Validation using S. aureus -infected wound tissue from diabetic murine models exhibited a precision exceeding 97 %. This technology represents a promising avenue for developing next-generation, high-performance biosensing platforms with significant translational potential in precision medicine diagnostics.

Modulating Ti t2g Orbital Bonding in Dual-Channeled TiO2/rGO Hybrid Architecture for Stable Photocatalytic Methanol to Hydrogen

Wen-Bei Yu,Heng-Rui Zhang,Hong-Wei Zhang,Yao Liu,Yu Li,Bao-Lian Su

Carbon materials are commonly integrated with TiO 2 to achieve high carrier mobility and excellent photocatalytic performance, and the chemical bond between TiO 2 − C is considered as a significant strategy to enhance efficiency. Nevertheless, few analyses have elucidated the formation mechanism of Ti 3 + − C bonds and the underlying reasons for the performance enhancement. To address these issues, this study conducts an in-depth investigation into the electronic structure of TiO 2 − C and demonstrates that the charge in the nonbonding molecular orbital t 2 g of Ti 3 + is transferred to the unoccupied 2 p energy level of C through the formation of 1π and 2π bonds, i.e., (Ti 3 d xz - C 2 p y ) and (Ti 3 d xy - C 2 p x ). The hybridization of t 2 g -2 p orbitals endows the Ti 3 + − C bond with higher carrier mobility and a stronger binding force, thereby contributing to stable photocatalytic H 2 production. Inspired by this scenario, the NSTiO 2 /rGO hybrid architecture, featuring the {101}/{001} surface heterojunction and the Ti 3 + − C interfacial chemical bond, has been constructed. As a result, the hybrid catalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic cycling stability of 92.9 % $92.9 \,\%$ and an H 2 evolution rate of 33.4 mmolh −1 g −1 . This work proposes a strategy for designing efficient photocatalyst by regulating orbitals to achieve high-performance photocatalytic methanol splitting.

Preparation of the Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb–Ni-La Electrode and Its Electrochemical Degradation of Oily Wastewater

Yunlei Cen,Yuanyuan Zhou,Mingshi Zhu,Ke Zheng,Shaoqi Zhou

In this work, Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb–Ni-La electrodes were developed in three deposition stages. TiO2-RNTs improved the bonding of the bottom layer, and Ni–La codoping resulted in higher film stability. Compared with other electrodes, this electrode exhibits excellent performance with a denser structure, higher OEP (2.17 V), lower Rct (5.36 Ω), longer electrode strengthening life, and larger active specific surface area. The degradation of oily wastewater revealed an oil removal rate equal to 97.88% under optimal conditions. In comparison to the Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb obtained via the one-step hydrothermal technique, the service life improved by 8.60 times, and the degradation rate (RD) of the current electrode (k = 0.0254 min–1) was enhanced by 2.67 times, whereas the removal rate remained stable after 10 cycles. Under the continuous attack of free radicals such as •OH, 48 types of organic matter in wash oil were decomposed, and most of the alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were mineralized. Compared with direct current, pulse current electrolysis of the oil-washing wastewater can save 47.95% electrical energy, and the energy consumption of chemical oxygen demand removal per unit mass can be reduced by 72.02%. Therefore, the Ti/TiO2-RNTs/SnO2–Sb–Ni-La pulse electrochemical oxidation method is expected to reduce energy loss and improve the electrochemical treatment of oily wastewater.

Hydrated Bi-Ti-Bimetal Ethylene Glycol: A New High-Capacity and Stable Anode Material for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Ziquan Li,Jinquan Wen,Yuqing Cai,Fengting Lv,Xu Zeng,Qian Liu,Titus Masese,Chuanxiang Zhang,Xusheng Yang,Yanwen Ma,Haijiao Zhang,Zhen-Dong Huang

Potassium-ion batteries have emerged not only as low-cost alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, but also as high-voltage energy storage systems. However, their development is still encumbered by the scarcity of high-performance electrode materials that can endure successive potassium-ion uptake. Herein, a hydrated Bi-Ti bimetallic ethylene glycol (H-Bi-Ti-EG) compound is reported as a new high-capacity and stable anode material for potassium storage. H-Bi-Ti-EG possesses a long-range disordered layered framework, which helps to facilitate electrolyte ingress into the entire Bi nanoparticles. A suite of spectroscopic analyses reveals the in situ formation Bi nanoparticles within the organic polymer matrix, which can alleviate stresses caused by the huge volume expansion/contraction during deep cycles, thereby maintaining the superior structural integrity of H-Bi-Ti-EG organic anode. As expected, H-Bi-Ti-EG anode exhibits a high capacity and superior long-term cycling stability. Importantly for potassium storage, it can be cycled at current densities of 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 Ag −1 for 800, 700, 1000, and even 6000 cycles, retaining charging capacities of 361, 206, 185, and 85.8 mAh g −1 , respectively. The scalable synthetic method along with the outstanding electrochemical performance of hydrated Bi-Ti-EG, which is superior to other reported Bi-based anode materials, places it as a promising anode material for high-performance potassium storage.

Wetting and Reaction Behavior of TiN and TiO2 with Different Mold Fluxes for High Ti-Bearing Stainless Steel

Chen Zhuo,Yu Binqi,Yao Tingfeng,Du Weitong,Ma Jianchao

The wettability and reaction behavior of mold flux with different basicity on TiN and TiO 2 substrates were investigated at up to 1400 °C by the sessile drop method, which can provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the composition of the mold flux for high Ti-bearing steel. As the basicity increased, the mold flux exhibited better wettability and a stronger interfacial reaction with TiN. Thus, it was easier to absorb the TiN inclusion in the order of CaO–SiO 2 -based flux (CS) > CaO–SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 -based flux (CSA) > CaO–Al 2 O 3 -based flux (CA). Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy showed that the interfacial reaction was also related to basicity. There was a visible and regular interfacial reaction layer between TiN and CS and the CSA flux, which was produced by the redox reaction between the SiO 2 in the slag and the TiN substrate, whereas there was no interfacial reaction layer between TiN and the CA flux. As the basicity decreased, the mold flux exhibited better wettability and a stronger interfacial reaction with TiO 2 ; thus, it was easier to absorb the TiO 2 inclusion in the order of CA > CSA > CS. There was also a visible and regular interfacial reaction layer between TiN and the three fluxes, which was produced by the dissolution of TiO 2 and then reacted with CaO to generate CaTiO 3 .

Xiang Wang,Haoran Wang,Min Li,Qingtao Guo,Ben Ge,Xingyu Xiong,Zhibin Yang

This work focuses on the development of high-performance La 0.1 Sr 1.9 TiFeO 6-δ (LSTF)-based fuel electrode materials through targeted Co substitution at the Ti site and Fe site. By selectively substituting Ti or Fe with Co element, lattice contraction and change of the Fe 3 ⁺/Fe 4 ⁺ ratio in LSTF double perovskite are achieved. La 0.1 Sr 1.9 Ti 0.8 Co 0.2 FeO 6-δ (LSTCF) material obtains higher oxygen vacancy concentration and better CO 2 adsorption capacity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test demonstrates that the La 0.1 Sr 1.9 TiFe 0.8 Co 0.2 O 6-δ (LSTFC) electrode exhibits superior performance in gas transport process, while the LSTCF electrode demonstrates significant advantages in oxygen ion conductivity and dissociative adsorption of CO 2 species. The single cell with the LSTCF electrode exhibits superior electrolysis performance, achieving a current density of 1.07 A·cm −2 at 800 °C and 1.8 V for CO 2 electrolysis. This work provides a novel pathway for the development of catalysts for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) fuel electrodes.

Optimizing the cell compatibility and mechanical properties in TiZrNbTa medium-entropy alloy/β-Ti composites through phase transformation

Peng Du,Zhi Cui,Tao Xiang,Yunping Li,Liang Zhang,Zeyun Cai,Ming Zhao,Guoqiang Xie

Medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) typically exhibit outstanding mechanical properties, but their high Young's modulus results in restricted clinical applications. Mismatched Young's modulus between implant materials and human bones can lead to “stress shielding” effects, leading to implant failure. In contrast, β- Ti alloys demonstrate a lower Young's modulus compared to MEAs, albeit with lower strength . In the present study, based on the bimodal grain size distribution (BGSD) strategy, a series of high-performance TiZrNbTa/Ti composites are obtained by combining TiZrNbTa MEA powders with nano-scale grain sizes and commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) powders with micro-scale grain sizes. Concurrently, Zr, Nb, and Ta that are β- Ti stabilizer elements diffuse into Ti, inducing an isomorphous transformation in Ti from the high Young's modulus α -Ti phase to the low Young's modulus β -Ti phase at room temperature, optimizing the mechanical biocompatibility. The TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite demonstrates a yield strength of 1490 ± 83 MPa, ductility of 20.7 % ± 2.9 %, and Young's modulus of 87.6 ± 1.6 GPa. Notably, the yield strength of the TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite surpasses that of sintered CP-Ti by 2.6-fold, and its ductility outperforms TiZrNbTa MEA by 2.3-fold. The Young's modulus of the TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite is reduced by 28 % and 36 % compared to sintered CP-Ti and TiZrNbTa MEA, respectively. Additionally, it demonstrates superior biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti plate, sintered CP-Ti, and TiZrNbTa MEA. With a good combination of mechanical properties and biocompatibility, the TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite exhibits significant potential for clinical applications as metallic biomaterials . Statement of significance This work combines TiZrNbTa MEA with nano-grains and commercially pure Ti with micro-grains to fabricate a TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite with bimodal grain-size, which achieves a yield strength of 1490 ± 83 MPa and a ductility of 20.7 % ± 2.9 %. Adhering to the ISO 10993-5 standard, the TiZrNbTa/ β -Ti composite qualifies as a non-cytotoxic material, achieving a Class 0 cytotoxicity rating and demonstrating outstanding biocompatibility akin to commercially pure Ti. Drawing on element diffusion, Zr, Nb, and Ta serve not only as solvent atoms to achieve solid-solution strengthening but also as stabilizers for the transformation of the β -Ti crystal structure. This work offers a novel avenue for designing advanced biomedical Ti alloys with elevated strength and plasticity alongside a reduced Young's modulus.

Carbon dots as electron acceptors modified NH2-MIL-125 (Ti)/Cu2O heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic H2 production

Jun-Qing Ye,Bin Cheng,Yunfei Bu,Jun-Feng Qian,Qian Liang,Ming-Yang He,Qun Chen

The development of high-efficiency photocatalysts for water splitting to hydrogen (H 2 ) is crucial for alleviating energy crisis and environmental problems. In this study, a novel type-II ternary heterojunction photocatalyst, CDs/NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti)/Cu 2 O, was fabricated through the integration of NH 2 -MIL-125 (Ti) with Cu 2 O and carbon dots (CDs), exhibited excellent photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 12817.1 μmol/g/h with apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 17.13 % under visible light irradiation. Characterization revealed a uniform and dense structural integration with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 275.9 m 2  g −1 and a suitable energy band gap of 2.18 eV. Furthermore, the heterostructures promoted efficient photo-generated carrier separation and enhanced reduction capabilities . Notably, CDs, serving as cocatalysts or electron acceptors, improved visible light utilization and electron migration, significantly boosting H 2 production. Insights from electron spin resonance (ESR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported the migration mechanisms of electrons. This work presents a significant advance in photocatalytic technology for sustainable energy by designing high-performance CDs-modified heterojunction photocatalysts.

Enhanced specific energy in fast-charging lithium-ion batteries negative electrodes via Ti-O covalency-mediated low potential

Huang Jun,Yang Qirui,Hu Anyi,Liao Zhu,Zhang Zhengxi,Zheng Qinfeng,Ren Zhouhong,Zheng Shun,Zhang Yixiao,Yang Xiaolong,Xu Zhenming,Zhang Le,Zhu Daming,Wen Wen,Liu Xi,Orita Akihiro,Saito Nagahiro,Wang Liguang,Xia Yongyao,Chen Liwei,Lu Jun,Yang Li

Developing lithium-ion batteries with high specific energy and fast-charging capability requires overcoming the potential-capacity trade-off in negative electrodes. Conventional fast-charging materials (e.g., Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 , TiNb 2 O 7 ) operate at high potentials (>1.5 V vs. Li + /Li) to circumvent lithium plating, yet this compromises specific energy. A viable strategy for enhancing the specific energy is to reduce the potential while avoiding the lithium plating risk; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that enhancing Titanium-Oxygen covalency through pseudo-Jahn-Teller Effect distortion in Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites enables low-potential operation. The Li 2 La 2 Ti 3 O 10 negative electrode exhibits a working potential of 0.5 V vs. Li + /Li with initial 139.3 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 and 72.9% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. Full cells with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 positive electrodes deliver 3.45 V average discharge voltage-50% higher than conventional Li 4 Ti 5 O 12  | |LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 systems-achieving 100 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 . Mechanistic analysis reveals low Li⁺ migration barriers and stable Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite frameworks enable rapid ion transport.

Effects of Ball Milling Time and Sintering Temperature on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mg-Al-Ti Alloy

Dan Qian,Yue Shen,Zhanli Geng,Binyu Zhao,Wandong Bai,Shiping Sun,Xiang Li,Jinbo Zeng,Shengdi Zhang,Yumin Wang,Xiufeng Ren

Driven by the demand for lightweight materials, magnesium has gained significant interest due to its abundance and low density. This study systematically investigated the effects of mechanical ball milling time and sintering temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a powder-metallurgy-processed Mg-Al-Ti alloy. The results established a correlation between ball milling and sintering processes, demonstrating that regulating precursor powder characteristics effectively enhances sintering diffusion efficiency. By precisely controlling sintering temperature and powder particle size characteristics, the alloy achieved high density, hardness, and strength at relatively low temperatures, demonstrating comprehensive performance. Optimal properties were obtained at 420 °C sintering conditions: relative density of 98%, hardness of 172 HV, compressive strength of 367 MPa, and nanoscale Young’s modulus reaching 45.15 GPa. Further analysis indicated that intermetallic compounds formed during sintering contributed significantly to the hardness enhancement, with the strengthening mechanism primarily attributed to the synergistic effects of precipitation and solid solution strengthening. The work provides a theoretical basis for further development of high-performance materials by subsequent processing.
