Catalytic fast pyrolysis of cellulose for selective production of 1-hydroxy-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one using nickel-tin layered double oxides

Yang Li,Kai Li,Bin Hu,Zhen-xi Zhang,Guan Zhang,Shi-yu Feng,Ti-peng Wang,Qiang Lu

As a value-added chiral chemical, 1-hydroxy-3,6-dioxobicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-one (LAC) can be obtained via cellulose pyrolysis, but its yield is extremely low in the conventional pyrolysis process. Herein, novel nickel-tin layered double oxide (NiSn-LDO) catalysts were developed for the selective production of LAC from the in-situ catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) of cellulose. Several layered double oxides (LDOs) were prepared and evaluated via pyrolysis-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) tests for the in-situ CFP of cellulose. NiSn-LDO was determined as the most capable catalyst for selective LAC preparation, and further experiments were conducted to confirm the optimal condition to produce LAC over several essential factors of reaction temperature, Ni/Sn molar ratio in the NiSn-LDO catalyst, and catalyst-to-cellulose (CA-to-CL) ratio. The results demonstrated that LAC was sensitive to the reaction conditions, and its yield always exhibited the tide of first increasing followed with decreasing along with the increase of pyrolysis temperature, Ni/Sn molar ratio, and CA-to-CL ratio. The maximal LAC yield reached 9.11 wt% over the pyrolysis temperature of 320 °C using NiSn-LDO with a Ni/Sn molar ratio of 2/1 at the CA-to-CL ratio of 1/1, which was more than 5 times of that from the non-catalytic process (1.72 wt%). In addition, the NiSn-LDOs possessed much better catalytic capability to yield LAC with high selectivity than previously reported catalysts.

Regulating light olefins or aromatics production in ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of biomass by engineering the structure of tin modified ZSM-5 catalyst

Jingyuan Shang,Guangbin Fu,Zhenping Cai,Xiang Feng,Yongxiao Tuo,Xin Zhou,Hao Yan,Chong Peng,Xin Jin,Yibin Liu,Xiaobo Chen,Chaohe Yang,De Chen

Valorization of biomass to olefin or aromatics harbours tremendous practical value due to growing concerns about sustainable production of chemicals. Herein, the olefin or aromatics yields of ex-situ catalytic pyrolysis of pine can be regulated by impregnating Sn on hollow-structured ZSM-5 (M-ZSM-5) and microporous ZSM-5 catalysts in fixed-bed reactor, respectively. Results showed that Sn/ZSM-5 catalyst simultaneously increased medium acidic sites and maintained strong acidic sites, which obtained the maximum carbon yield of aromatics (33.77%) due to enhanced cracking and deoxygenation reactions. In addition, Sn boosted alkylation between olefin and aromatics, generating more alkylbenzene. In contrast, Sn/M-ZSM-5 catalyst produced the highest olefins carbon yield (12.39%) because the reduction of strong acidic sites and microporous volume inhibited the olefin aromatization. Moreover, olefins were easier to desorb from Sn/M-ZSM-5 due to the enhanced mass transfer ability, which weakened the alkylation reactions. The synergistic effect harbours great significance to manipulate the distribution of products.

Carbon and Tin-Based Polyacrylonitrile Hybrid Architecture Solid Phase Microextraction Fiber for the Detection and Quantification of Antibiotic Compounds in Aqueous Environmental Systems

Sandip Mondal,Jialing Jiang,Yin Li,Gangfeng Ouyang

In this study, the detection and quantification of multiple classes of antibiotics in water matrices are proposed using a lab-made solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The lab-made fiber was prepared using a graphene oxide (G), carbon nanotubes (C), and tin dioxide (T) composite, namely GCT, with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as supporting material. The detected antibiotics were enrofloxacin, sulfathiazole, erythromycin, and trimethoprim. The custom-made fiber was found to be superior compared with a commercial C18 fiber. The excellent reproducibility and lower intra-fiber relative standard deviations (RSDs 1.8% to 6.8%) and inter-fiber RSDs (4.5% to 8.8%) made it an ideal candidate for the detection of traces of antibiotics in real environmental samples. The proposed validated method provides a satisfactory limit of detection and good linear ranges with higher (>0.99) coefficient of determination in the aqueous system. Application of the method was made in different real water systems such as river, pond and tap water using the standard spiking method. Excellent sensitivity, reproducibility, lower amount of sample detection and higher recovery was found in a real water sample. Therefore, the extraction method was successfully applied to the detection and quantification of multiple classes of antibiotics in different aqueous systems with satisfactory results. Keywords:antibiotics;composite materials;solid-phase microextraction;LC-MS/MS;water matrices

Constructing Ordered Oxophilic Tin Sites on Platinum to Achieve a High-Performance and Anti-CO Poisoning Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction under an Alkaline Electrolyte

Chaoyi Yang,Guangqin Wang,Jianchao Yue,Zihao Dai,Wei Luo

The development of active and anti-CO-poisoning Pt-based electrocatalysts toward an alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is highly desirable for the practical application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we report the synthesis of intermetallic Pt alloys with introduction of oxophilic Sn (including Pt3Sn and PtSn), significantly boosting the alkaline HOR performance and CO tolerance. Experimental results including in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations unravel that the d band centers of Pt in Pt3Sn and PtSn are notably down shift due to the introduction of oxophilic Sn, thereby leading to the decreased adsorption energy of both hydrogen and CO, which together with the enhanced adsorption energy of OH species on Sn sites contribute the lowered energy barrier for water formation and CO oxidation. As expected, the obtained Pt3Sn and PtSn both present improved HOR performance and anti-CO-poisoning ability. Specially, Pt3Sn depicts three times specific activity and four times mass activity higher than that of Pt, while PtSn maintains over 90% HOR activity after the CO poisoning.

Simultaneous production of furfural and levulinic acid from sugarcane bagasse using a novel, magnetically recoverable tin-based solid acid catalyst in hydrothermal treatment

Baoting Yi,Huimei Wang,Keyin Liu,Xiaohui Wang,Fangong Kong,Junli Ren

Catalytic biomass conversion is a crucial pathway for high-value utilization of renewable resources, yet current catalysts face limitations such as insufficient acid sites, poor product selectivity, and low cycling stability. This study developed a magnetic tin-based solid acid catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 @PDA-Sn) using 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium salt as a ligand and dopamine hydrochloride-coated Fe 3 O 4 for targeted catalytic conversion of sugarcane bagasse. Results demonstrated that the catalyst achieved a furfural yield of 86.2% and a levulinic acid yield of 32.5% at 170°C for 90 min, with FT-IR, NMR, and XRD confirming its differential deconstruction capability toward cellulose and hemicellulose. Mechanistic analysis demonstrated that the coordinated interaction between Brønsted and Lewis acid sites played a crucial role in steering the reaction toward specific pathways: hemicellulose hydrolysis products underwent dehydration to furfural (enriched in the organic phase), while cellulose was selectively cleaved to form levulinic acid. The catalyst maintained stable performance over 5 cycles without regeneration, with 97.3% magnetic recovery efficiency, offering a novel "facile magnetic separation–excellent cycling performance" strategy for hierarchical biomass conversion. This work provides critical insights into the design of multifunctional biorefinery catalysts for sustainable biomass valorization.

Unveiling morphology evolution and performance enhancement of tin-doped Co3O4 porous nanoarrays anchored on stainless-steel mesh for advanced lithium-ion battery anodes

Jun-Xia Li,Qinxing Xie,Yingqiang Zhao,Peng Zhao,Shoumin Zhang,Weiping Huang

The widespread application of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) has driven an increasing demand for advanced anodes with high-energy density and high-power density. Electroactive transition metal oxides (TMOs) are considered as promising candidates due to their high theoretical capacity. However, practical application has been hampered by their low conductivity and poor stability. In this study, tin-doped Co 3 O 4 porous nanoarrays were successfully assembled on stainless steel mesh (SSM) using Co/Sn bimetallic organic frameworks as precursors. The resulting (Co/Sn) 3 O 4 @SSM was employed as a free-standing anode for LiBs. The lattice doping with tin atoms significantly enhances the internal conductivity of Co 3 O 4 , as confirmed by first-principle calculations. Benefiting from its hybrid advantages, such as a binder-free porous architecture and the improved conductivity, (Co/Sn) 3 O 4 @SSM exhibits dramatically enhanced energy storage capability, including high specific capacity, excellent cycling stability, and superior rate performance.

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine modulates indium-tin oxide nanoparticles-caused interstitial lung diseases in male rats through oxidative stress-activated apoptosis and autophagy

Yanzi Zhao,Yujing Niu,Xuefei Wang,Peng Wan,Zhanfei Ma,Jian Sun,Shoufang Jiang,Ling Xue,Nan Liu

Indium-tin oxide nanoparticles (Nano-ITO) are widely used in various applications as infrared shielding materials, which increase the risk of occupational exposure. According to reports, Nano-ITO can cause indium lung disease in occupational exposed workers, but the specific mechanism of Nano-ITO-induced pulmonary toxicity remains unclear. In this study, 50 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups (10 rats in each group) as follows: control group (physiological saline), 1.2 mg/kg Nano-ITO group, 6 mg/kg Nano-ITO group, N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) control group (200 mg/kg), and NAC + Nano-ITO group (200 mg/kg NAC intraperitoneal injection, after 1.5 h, 6 mg/kg Nano-ITO intratracheal instillation), twice a week for 12 weeks. Pathological and ultrastructural changes in the rat lung tissue, immunofluorescence assays, immunohistochemistry, protein and mRNA levels of apoptosis- and autophagy-related genes were measured. The levels of ROS, MDA, H 2 O 2 , and LDH, and the activities of T-AOC and SOD, were determined using oxidative stress assay kits. The results showed that Nano-ITO caused strong pulmonary inflammation, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, and pulmonary interstitial fibrosis. In addition, Nano-ITO-induced oxidative stress in rat lungs presented as increased levels of ROS and H 2 O 2 in the lungs, increased LDH and MDA levels, SOD and T-AOC activity in BALF, and activation of the Nrf2/NQO1/HO-1 signaling pathway. Intriguingly, Nano-ITO significantly increased the protein expression of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3-II), the protein levels of autophagy-related genes 5 (ATG5), and Beclin-1 (BECN1), and reduced the protein levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) in lung tissues. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed a significant increase in autophagic vesicles in the cytoplasm of lungs treated with Nano-ITO, indicating that Nano-ITO induces autophagy in rat lungs. Moreover, apoptosis also participates in Nano-ITO-induced pulmonary injury in a synchronous manner, as evidenced by the enhancement of TUNEL-positive signals and activation of the apoptosis pathway (Bax and Bcl-2 positive proportions). NAC supplementation restored most of the pathological structural features of rat lung tissue to their physiological range and effectively weakened apoptosis, as demonstrated by the notable reductions in TUNEL, Bax, and Bcl-2 protein expression levels in the lungs. Although autophagy was detected in the lungs of rats in the Nano-ITO and NAC + Nano-ITO groups, we discovered that NAC could rescue the expression of ATG5 and BECN1 induced by Nano-ITO, thus indicating that exposure to Nano-ITO promotes pulmonary apoptosis and autophagy by mediating oxidative stress. These results indicate that Nano-ITO can cause pulmonary injury by inducing oxidative stress, which activates apoptosis and autophagy, ultimately leading to alveolar proteinosis and interstitial fibrosis.

TiN nanoparticles anchored on porous carbon black: The synergistic effect of porosity, surface roughness and surface plasmon on high-performance broadband infrared absorption

Yu Xie,Quanjiang Lv,Tingzhen Chen,Dongliang Zhang,Siwei Liu,Haigang Hou,Guiwu Liu,Guanjun Qiao,Junlin Liu

Porous carbon black loaded with TiN nanoparticles was developed as a broadband infrared (IR) absorber. The unique porous structure, characterized by variable pore sizes and random spatial distribution, effectively guides and absorbs electromagnetic waves across a broad wavelength range. The incorporation of TiN nanoparticles enhance the surface roughness, facilitating multiple reflection and scattering, thereby extending the light propagation path. This modification notably addresses the absorption deficiencies in the 3.5–6 μm wavelength range, significantly improving overall absorption efficiency. IR absorption tests revealed that the original film achieved an average absorption rate of approximately 93.7 % within the 2.5–20 μm range, while the addition of TiN nanoparticles increased the absorption rate to 95.73 %. Finite-difference time-domain simulations results demonstrated a significant increase in electric field intensity around the carbon surface and TiN nanoparticles at 5 μm, attributed to the radiative absorption properties of carbon and the surface plasmon characteristics of TiN at shorter wavelengths. This absorber layer shows high potential for IR sensor applications.

Tin-Based Metal–Organic Framework Derived Sn-SnO2/Sn2O3@C With a Heterogeneous Structure as an Advanced Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shikai Liu,Xiaoyuan Sang,Eswaramoorthi Thiruganasambandam,Huimin Jiang,Liyan Zhou,Ziping Jin,Jianjian Lin

Tin-based oxides are recognized as promising high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries owing to their high theoretical specific capacity and favorable operating voltage. Nevertheless, their widespread practical implementation has been hindered by substantial volume fluctuations during lithiation/delithiation processes, as well as inferior rate capability. In this work, we synthesized a tin-based metal–organic framework (Sn-MOF) precursor at room temperature and subsequently transformed it via annealing treatment into a heterostructure Sn-SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 @C composites. This self-sacrificing MOF-derived strategy yields a material featuring both a conductive carbon coating and an integrated SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 heterostructure, which collectively enhance electronic conductivity and mitigate volume expansion. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between the carbon matrix and the heterointerface, the anode material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the anode material presents a high reversible capacity (1242 mAh g −1 at 0.1C), and its first-cycle coulombic efficiency reached 80.4%, a remarkable rate capability (501 mAh g −1 at 5C), and a high lithium-ion diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the electrode retains a capacity of 800 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 500 mA g −1 . This work establishes an effective heterointerface engineering approach and offers a viable design strategy for fabricating Sn-based anode materials that combine long-term cycling stability with high-rate capability. Graphical We synthesized a tin-based metal–organic framework (Sn-MOF) via a room-temperature strategy and further converted it into an Sn-SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 @C heterostructure through MOF pyrolysis. The synergistic effect between the MOF-derived carbon framework and the SnO 2 /Sn 2 O 3 heterostructure contributes to the superior electrochemical performance. The as-prepared material exhibits a high reversible capacity of 1242 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and excellent cycling stability.

Multi-heterostructure and surface free radicals induced enhanced ammonia gas sensing performance of polyaniline/tin phosphide/nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide at room temperature

Xiao Wang,Yao Fu,Feifei Li,Zhaokun Sun,Cunguang Zhu,Gang Zhao,Xijin Xu

Exploration of novel sensing materials and sensing strategies to provide highly sensitive and selective ammonia (NH 3 ) gas detection is imperative for environmental pollution monitoring. Herein, a multi-heterostructure and surface free radical activation strategy is employed to enhance the NH 3 sensing performance of tin phosphide (SnP x ) at room temperature (RT). Characterizations confirm the uniform dispersion of SnP x on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide ( N -rGO) and the effective coating of polyaniline (PANI) film. The PANI/SnP x / N -rGO sensors show a well sensing ability to NH 3 gas with a high sensitivity (3.1 @ 40 ppm) at RT, good selectivity and a low detection limit of 36.8 ppb. The multi-heterostructure can enable precise modulation of electronic properties and energy barriers. Additionally, the sensing material shows enhanced responses with increasing relative humidity, exhibiting a response of 2.7 to 10 ppm NH 3 at the relative humidity of 70 %. This improvement is attributed to the formation of hydroxyl radicals through the dissociation of surface adsorbed water molecules, which promotes the surface gas adsorption. This study offers an effective strategy for fabricating highly sensitive sensing materials and advances the research on new sensing mechanisms.

High catalytic activity of tin oxide antimony supported bismuth heterogeneous catalyst with stable Bi-O structure for the electroreduction of CO2 to formic acid

Dongze Lai,Mingyu Xie,Huawang Zhao,Xiaomin Wu,Bihong Lv,Guohua Jing

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 into high-value chemicals, such as formic acid (HCOOH), is an important way to resource CO 2 . Interfacial effects through catalyst design are important to improve the ECO 2 RR performance of Bi-based catalysts. A Bi/ATO heterojunction catalyst was constructed. The current density and FE HCOOH of Bi/ATO were 20 mA cm −2 and 95%, respectively, at a potential of -0.97 V, respectively, compared with the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). In-situ cyclic voltammetry curves and Raman spectra showed that electron density change occurred between ATO and Bi during the ECO 2 RR process. This Interfacial electron effects increased the conversion of adsorbed CO 2 molecules to HCOOH by reducing the Interfacial resistance. Interfacial electron transfers also prevented the complete reduction of Bi by transferring electrons to ATO during the ECO 2 RR, which stabilized Bi-O structures. Bi-O improved the selectivity for HCOOH, probably by accelerating the formation of an *OCHO intermediate.

Reutilization of melamine-formaldehyde foam wastes: Removing Sn2+ in simulated tin-containing wastewater to transform a fire hazard suppressant of flexible poly(vinyl chloride)

Xiaoqing Qiu,Daqian Wang,Qing Li,Xiaoyue Li,Xiaowei Zhao,Zhiwei Li,Xiaohong Li,Zhijun Zhang

Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) foam has wide applications due to good flame retardancy, excellent sound absorption, and high thermal stability. However, the recycling of MF foam wastes remains a challenge due to its thermosetting nature. Here, we demonstrate a new strategy for discarded foams as solid adsorbents for removing tin ions in simulated tin-containing wastewater. Results showed that the removal rate of tin in simulated wastewater is as high as 99.996%. Moreover, after simple calcination, as-obtained products can be used as high-efficiency flame retardants for flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), reducing the peak of heat release rate and total smoke production of PVC by 51.8% and 45.8%, respectively, under the condition of 2.5 wt.% addition. In short, this strategy successfully converted MF foam and tin wastewater to valuable flame retardants, opening the way for the environmentally friendly recycling of MF waste and the simultaneous treatment of tin-containing wastewater.
