The hydrophilic fibers based on 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) which could remove Cr(VI) ions rapidly were prepared by UV-irradiation induced grafting of DMAEMA through pre-coating photoinitiator on the fibers and modifying with bromoethane(BE). The FTIR, FESEM, XPS, TG-DTG and contact angle spectra manifested that DMAEMA was grafted onto the surface of PP fibers and subsequently was quaternized. The maximum grafting degree (22.9 %) and exchange capacity of DMAEMA (1.2 mmol g −1 ) was obtained when PP fibers was immersed in BP concentration of 0.3 % for 4 h, irradiated with the DMAEMA concentration of 100 % and irradiation time of 20 min, and then was modified with BE. The modified fibers of PP-g-DMAEMA with bromoethane were proved to remove Cr(VI) and As(V) with removal rate of 97.3 % and 96.2 % within 10 min, respectively. The prepared fibers have potential application for the removal of Cr(VI) and As(V) from wastewater highly and rapidly.

Antimony, a toxic metalloid posing ecological and human health risks, remains difficult to remove efficiently from aquatic environments, particularly under acidic conditions. In this study, fly ash-based geopolymers were employed as the matrix, and a series of iron sludge-modified composite adsorbents were prepared by incorporating different proportions of iron sludge. Their adsorption performance toward Sb(V) and applicability in acidic wastewater were systematically evaluated. With increasing iron sludge content, the Sb(V) removal efficiency improved from 67% to 94%. Among the composites, the material with a fly ash-to-iron sludge mass ratio of 4:1 exhibited the best overall performance in terms of adsorption capacity, kinetic response, and applicability under acidic conditions. Characterization results revealed that Sb adsorption was governed not only by coordination with surface Fe active sites but also by localized acid-induced corrosion and reconstruction of Si-O-Al bonds within the geopolymer framework, accompanied by the formation of a new Sb-doped sillimanite phase, indicating distinctive structural evolution during adsorption. The adsorption kinetics were well described by the Elovich model, suggesting heterogeneous surface energy distribution, while intraparticle diffusion analysis suggested that iron sludge incorporation facilitated Sb(V) mass transfer and improved access to internal adsorption sites. The isotherm data fitted the Sips model best, and the maximum adsorption capacity of IS-FAGF 4:1 reached 74 mg/g, representing a 23.3% increase compared with the pristine geopolymer. Lower pH favored Sb removal, and iron sludge modification broadened the effective working pH range. The increase in final pH observed after adsorption suggests a pH adjustment effect under acidic conditions, which is likely related to the release of alkaline species from the geopolymer matrix. Although phosphate exerted competitive effects, the composite still maintained relatively stable Sb(V) removal, indicating favorable anti-interference performance under acidic conditions. Regeneration experiments further confirmed the good cyclic stability of the composite. Overall, this study elucidates the synergistic multi-mechanism adsorption behavior of Sb(V) on iron sludge-fly ash geopolymers, providing theoretical support for the design of geopolymer-based composite adsorbents and the treatment of acidic Sb-containing wastewater.

Low U/V selectivity and long extraction time remains the major obstacles in the field of uranium extraction from seawater, since both them can largely reduce the uranium extraction ability of adsorbent. We present herein a robust biomimetic metal-organic framework (MOF) material, designated ECUT-74, engineered through innovative incorporation of helical rod-like secondary building units (SBUs). This structural design introduces a protein-mimicking uranyl-binding motif to make a precise recognition of uranyl, leading to a benchmark U/V selectivity of 104. When applied to real seawater (3.3 μg/L), ECUT-74 demonstrates an ultrafast uranium extraction from seawater with a record-created extraction ability of 16 mg/g in just one day and 22.6 mg/g in five days, along with an extremely low uptake for other metal ions (less than 2 mg/g). The robust nature of this MOF allows for a good reusability for uranium extraction from seawater. All these merits strongly suggest the superior application of ECUT-74 for uranium extraction from seawater.

Since 5 V lithium ion batteries have attracted more and more attentions and are deemed to be an important tendency in the future, the matched design of the separators has also become a necessary and significant work. In this work, the lithium ionic conducting glass ceramic Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 (PO 4 ) 3 -polypropylene (PP) based inorganic–organic composite separator (LAGP-PP) is prepared. Compared with the pristine PP separator, the LAGP-PP separator owns enhanced thermal stability and wettability . Meanwhile, the LAGP-PP separator shows higher ion conductivity than the traditional Al 2 O 3 coated PP separator due to the more facile lithium ion diffusion channels in the coating layer . The superior C-rate capacity and cyclability in the LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 based 5 V lithium ion batteries indicate that the LAGP-PP separator is a good alternative for the traditional inert inorganic ceramic coated polyolefin separators and is a kind of promising candidate separator for the high voltage lithium ion batteries.

With the advantages of the multiple oxidation states and highly open crystal structures, vanadium-based composites have been considered as the promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). However, the inherent inferior electrical conductivity, low specific surface area, and sluggish Zn 2+ diffusion kinetics of the traditional vanadium-based oxides have greatly impeded their development. Herein, a novel hierarchical porous spindle-shaped Ag-V 2 O 5 with unique heterostructures was rationally designed via a simple MOF-assisted synthetic method and applied as stable cathode for aqueous ZIBs. The high specific surface area and hierarchically porous superstructures endowed Ag-V 2 O 5 with sufficient electrochemical active sites and shortened the diffusion pathways of Zn 2+ , which was beneficial to accelerate the reversible transport of Zn 2+ and deliver a high specific capacity (426 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 96.5% capacity retention after 100 cycles). Meanwhile, the self-built-in electric fields at the heterointerface of Ag-V 2 O 5 electrode could strengthen the synergistic coupling interaction between Ag and V 2 O 5 , which can effectively enhance the electric conductivity and maintain the structural integrity, resulting in superb rate capability (326.1 mA h g −1 at 5.0 A g −1 ) and remarkable cycling stability (89.7% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 5.0 A g −1 ). Moreover, the reversible Zn 2+ storage mechanism was further investigated and elucidated by kinetics analysis and DFT calculations.

The application of water electrolysis for hydrogen production is inhibited by high energy consumption, primarily due to the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Replacing OER with a thermodynamically favorable reaction is significant to decrease the energy consumption. Coal-assisted water electrolysis (CAWE), with a theoretical potential of only 0.21 V, received special attention. However, the conventional CAWE suffers from poor stability to maintain high current, the continuous collision of coal particles with electrodes and membranes also causes the abrasion of these components. Here, a two-step CAWE system with the electrolysis system (ES) and hydrothermal system (HS) was proposed. The homogeneous ES generates H 2 assisted by the anodic Fe 2+ oxidation (Fe 2+ →Fe 3+ ), while the heterogeneous HS supplies Fe 2+ via the reduction of Fe 3+ by coal slurry (Fe 3+ →Fe 2+ ). Results showed that key operating parameters significantly affected the Fe 3+ reduction by coal in HS. Additionally, a homemade continuous proton exchange membrane electrolyzer was used to test the two-step CAWE concept. The current density can achieve 154 mA/cm 2 and remain 136 mA/cm 2 after 5 cycles, at a low cell voltage of 1.2 V, corresponding to a low power consumption of 2.87 kWh/Nm 3 (H 2 ).

The surface defects of adsorbents are generally considered to be the active sites for adsorbates, and the adsorption behaviors of a variety of pollutants in wastewater are strongly influenced by the surface defects of the adsorbents. With simple chemical and structural properties, nano-Mg(OH)2 exhibits a high adsorption affinity and selectivity to heavy metals from wastewater. The insight into the surface complex structures of heavy metals on the Mg(OH)2 surface is fundamental for both the mechanism and application of defective adsorbents in wastewater treatment. In this study, the impact of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 nanoplates on the structure, energy, and adsorption amounts of toxic heavy metal oxyanions (HAsO42− and CrO42−) was investigated by combining the first-principles calculations and batch experiments. The first-principles calculations illustrated that the heavy metal oxyanions can be steadily incorporated into the surface defects to form inner-sphere complexes. The incorporated heavy metal oxyanions have strong charge–charge and chemical bonding interactions with the surface defect sites, which are much stronger than the hydrogen bonding interactions with the surface OH sites. Moreover, the adsorption affinity of surface defects towards heavy metal oxyanions is stronger than that towards other oxyanions (e.g. SO42− and NO3−), indicating the high adsorption selectivity of heavy metal oxyanions over other oxyanions. Batch adsorption experiments verified that the adsorption of defect-rich Mg(OH)2 adsorbents towards heavy metal ions, e.g., As(V) and Cr(VI), was favorable even under the condition of low concentration (mg L−1 level). These findings reveal the significance of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 for extracting As(V) and Cr(VI) from low-concentration solutions. The proposed strategy of surface defect-fabrication should provide a useful insight into designing effective adsorbents for the selective extraction of heavy metal oxyanions at low concentration.

Due to uneven distribution amino acid residues of α-lactalbumin (αLA) at oil-water interface, some measurement should be adopted to improve its interfacial behavior and emulsion stability. Therefore, this study focused on the mechanism of synergy of ultrasound and high pressure homogenization on the emulsion stability and interfacial behaviors of α-lactalbumin with mogroside V (MGV). Four treatments were adopted: ultrasound (US), high pressure homogenization (HPH) and combined treatment (US-HPH and HPH-US). Primarily, emulsion stability of αLA/MGV was analyzed. US-HPH or HPH-US exhibited better emulsion stability than US or HPH. Especially, HPH-US-αLA/MGV emulsion was not stratified at the given time (45 d), which was the most stable emulsion. Moreover, the micromorphology of emulsion showed that MGV and UH/HPH treatment suppressed the aggregation of αLA emulsion droplet. In addition, interfacial adsorption mass and viscoelasticity of physical treated αLA was improved with MGV in the order of HPH-US > US-HPH > US > HPH, specifically, frequency shift (ΔF) and dissipation shift (ΔD) of HPH-US-αLA/MGV was 42.2% and 32.5% higher than that without MGV. This finding may provide a potential approach for obtaining natural and high-efficient protein-based emulsifier in food industry.

The high-quality perovskite film with reduced defect states and released lattice strain is crucial to the performance development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, carbon quantum dots with bromine functional groups (Br-CQDs) are firstly synthesized and creatively employed as additive and buried interface modifier to enhance perovskite film quality. Arising from the strong anchor binding of bromine and oxygen-containing groups in Br-CQDs with uncoordinated Pb 2+ and Cs + ions within perovskite and the insertion of Br-CQDs into perovskite lattice, the incorporation of Br-CQDs exerting the role of an “adhesive” can not only effectively retard nucleation and growth processes, heal defect states and release lattice strain of perovskite film, but also regulate interfaces energy level. As a result, the charge recombination and energy loss inside PSCs are evidently suppressed thanks to the resultant high-quality perovskite film and more matching interfaces energy level. Finally, the hole-free PSC achieves an exciting PCE up to 10.79% with an ultrahigh V OC of 1.651 V, which is to date the highest efficiency and V OC for the mesoporous all-inorganic CsPbBr 3 PSCs without hole transport materials. Furthermore, the optimized PSCs display a superior long-term stability under air conditions with 85% RH at 85 °C and continuous illumination.

This paper presents a study of V and N co-doping TiO 2 embedding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) supported on γ -Al 2 O 3 pellet (V/N-TiO 2 -MWCNTs/ γ -Al 2 O 3 ) composite photocatalyst induced by pulsed discharge plasma to enhance the removal of acid orange II (AO7) from aqueous solution. The photocatalytic activity of the V/N-TiO 2 -MWCNTs/ γ -Al 2 O 3 composite to AO7 removal induced by the pulsed discharge plasma was evaluated. The results indicate that the V/N-TiO 2 -MWCNTs/ γ -Al 2 O 3 composite possesses enhanced photocatalytic activity that facilitates the removal of AO7 compared with the TiO 2 -MWCNTs/ γ -Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 / γ -Al 2 O 3 composites. Almost 100% of AO7 is removed after 10 min under optimal conditions. The V 0.10 /N 0.05 -TiO 2 -MWCNTs/ γ -Al 2 O 3 photocatalyst exhibits the best removal effect for AO7. Analysis of the removal mechanism indicates that the enhancement of the removal of AO7 resulting from V and N co-doping causes TiO 2 lattice distortion and introduces a new impurity energy level, which not only reduces the band gap of TiO 2 but also inhibits the recombination of the pairs. An efficient and easily recycled V/N-MWCNTs-TiO 2 / γ-Al 2 O 3 composite was prepared. Activity of the composite induced by discharge plasma to AO7 removal was evaluated. Synergistic effect of discharge plasma and catalyst effectively improve AO7 removal. The composite demonstrates adequate recycling performance in a discharge plasma system. Possible mechanisms of AO7 removal were analyzed.

Poly(ethylene oxide) based polymer electrolytes(PEO-SPEs) suffer from a narrow electrochemical window and deliver poor electrochemical performance when coupling with 4.2 V cathode. This severely limits the scope of its application. Here, a combination of physical stirring and electrochemistry is used to form an ultrathin and uniform cladding layer on the LiCoO 2 particles. The results show that in addition to the decomposition of LiPO 2 F 2 during the charge/discharge cycling, decomposition reactions occur during the stirring and drying process by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). This novel method effectively improves the electrochemical performance of 4.2 V PEO based solid-state lithium batteries . In particular, the cell shows excellent and stable electrochemical performance, exhibiting a discharge capacity of 112.0 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles, a capacity retention rate of 79.4% and a capacity decay rate of approximately 0.1% per cycle when the surface of LiCoO 2 is coated with 2 wt% LiPO 2 F 2 . In comparison, the discharge capacity of the unmodified LiCoO 2 cathode is found to be only 75.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, with a poor capacity retention rate of 56.8%. Based on the basis of the above research, a new process was explored and also shows excellent interfacial stability by dispersing LiPO 2 F 2 directly inside the binder which with a discharge capacity of 109.2 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 84.5% after 145 cycles. This novel approach opens up a new pathway for solving the problem of interfacial stability between PEO based polymer electrolytes and high-voltage cathode.

The fine micro-structure regulation of polymeric membranes is crucial to the separation performances. Herein, we prepared a novel Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU)/sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) microfiltration membrane with ‘hour-glass’ like spongy micropore-structure via vapor and liquid induced phase separation (V-LIPS) technique. A precritical casting solution was prepared by adding a certain amount of H 2 O using N, N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as the solvent and Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) as the pore-forming agent. The effect of residence time in vapor on membrane structures is extensively evaluated. Results revealed that the resultant membranes evolved from finger-like to bicontinuous structure with extending the exposure time (>5s) in vapor. The pure water flux of the membrane with the vapor time (30s) under the pressure of 0.2 bar reached a high value of 3045.7 ± 42.7 L/(m 2 ∙h). Moreover, the obtained membrane M3 showed excellent separation properties for surfactant-stabilized n-hexane-in-water, isooctane-in-water and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5)-in-water emulsions with rejection coefficient up to >99%, >99% and >98% and high rejection of 99.0% to SiO 2 nanoparticles . Therefore, PPSU/SPSf membrane with controlled ‘hour-glass’ like spongy micro-pore structure showed high permeability with high rejection coefficient for both inorganic nanoparticles and oily water.
