Photocatalytic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Selective Products by Noble Metal-Free Z-Scheme Heterostructures α-Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S

Yuyang Wang,Chun Cai

It is a promising endeavor to explore the photocatalytic oxidation for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to produce high-value-added derivatives. The absence of efficient photocatalytic systems has hindered the transformation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), while DFF is susceptible to subsequent oxidation into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Herein, we design a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst α-Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S via hydrothermal methods, which exhibits superior activity toward the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF or FDCA in aqueous solution. Photocatalytic investigations demonstrated the highest activity for 15% Fe2O3/Zn0.5Cd0.5S, resulting in a DFF selectivity of 99% and conversion of 75%, affording FDCA selectivity of 85% and conversion of 99%. The high catalytic activity has been ascribed to the effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in different atmospheres with the Z-scheme mechanism. Research revealed that the oxidation to DFF is associated with •OH in an Ar environment, while the generation of FDCA is related to •O2– in the air. Moreover, selective oxidation may also exhibit significant potential for the utilization of sunlight and other benzene substrates. Overall, this study offers a unique demonstration of designing a noble metal-free Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for the oxidation of HMF to selective products in water.

Rational design and construction of direct Z-scheme ternary heterojunction photocatalyst AgBr/CoWO4/Ag for efficient environmental remediation

Junlong Zhang,Jie Wei,Jianting Li,Minchuan Xiahou,Zehao Sun,Ao Cao,Youxin Yuanfeng,Guogang Chen,Yanchun He

The indiscriminate discharge of micropollutants ( e.g. , dyes, antibiotics, industrial additives, etc .) represents a significant risk to human health, and the removal of these substances from water bodies has become a prominent area of research within the field of environmental remediation. A simple hydrothermal-precipitation-photoreduction method was employed to synthesize novel Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts of AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag. The catalysts demonstrated remarkable degradation capabilities with regard to a range of micropollutants present in wastewater. Of the catalysts tested, 5AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag exhibited the highest degradation rates, reaching 98.58% for Rhodamine B, 86.82% for tetracycline hydrochloride, and 95.60% for 2-mercaptobenzothiazole within 60 min. In particular, the reaction kinetic rate of 5AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag towards Rhodamine B degradation ( k 2  = 0.26278 L mg −1 ·min −1 ) is 9 times that of AgBr ( k 2  = 0.02953 L mg −1 ·min −1 ) and 113 times that of CoWO 4 ( k 2  = 0.00233 L mg −1 ·min −1 ), which serves to highlight the exceptional photocatalytic activity of the material. The experimental data and subsequent analysis indicated that the enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to two factors: firstly, the electron mediation by Ag nanoparticles leading to improved charge separation efficiency, and secondly, the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions between AgBr and CoWO 4 . The cyclic tests provided confirmation of the excellent stability and recyclability of the AgBr/CoWO 4 /Ag photocatalysts. It is anticipated that this study will facilitate the development of novel methods for the degradation of refractory micropollutants and provide insights into environmental remediation, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of society.

Study on the mechanism of photocatalytic activity enhancement of Ag/Ag3PO4/PDI-2 supramolecular Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst

Congzhi Hu,Yuye Li,Tingting Du,Youyong Pang,Yongping Liu,Botian Liu,Ling Li,Huidan Lu,Bin Huang

In this paper, a new supramolecular Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, designated as Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /Perylene diimide organic molecules after secondary acid-base self-assembly (PDI-2), was synthesized through precipitation and photoreduction techniques. Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /60 %PDI-2 (APP-6) exhibited the best photocatalytic activity due to the synergistic effect of Z-scheme heterojunction and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Under visible light (λ > 420 nm), the degradation efficiency of APP-6 for Rhodamine B (RhB) and Bisphenol A (BPA) was 99.7 % and 90.7 %, respectively. Additionally, PDI-2 was transformed into smaller nanoclusters, which increased the specific surface area of the photocatalyst, and reduced the charge transport distance. Moreover, APP-6 exhibited the smallest electrochemical impedance, the largest photocurrent, the smallest fluorescence lifetime. Free radical trapping experiments showed that •O 2 − was the main reactive group and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed by combining the Ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (UV–vis DRS) and the Mott-Schottky plots.

Preparation and visible-light photocatalytic property of a novel ternary dual Z-scheme g-C3N4/Ag6Si2O7/AgBr heterojunction

Xiaohua Zheng,Zhongchen Chen,Chenbin Cai,Huilin Han,Ruomeng Zhang,Jingting Yang

In recent years, ternary heterojunction catalysts have emerged owing to their exceptional properties for integrating the advantages of various materials, enabling the efficient separation of photoinduced charges and enhanced redox performance. In this study, a novel dual Z -scheme g-C 3 N 4 /Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 /AgBr (CNASAB) photocatalyst was prepared using a one-step coprecipitation method. Its catalytic performance was assessed through the photodegradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and Rhodamine B (RhB). The results showed that among various CNASAB compositions, CNASAB6 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. The catalyst achieved complete degradation of RhB within 6 min under visible light irradiation, with catalytic rates 73.7, 53.0, and 6.8 times higher than those of the individual components, g-C 3 N 4 , Ag 6 Si 2 O 7 , and AgBr, respectively. Additionally, the catalyst exhibited significant degradation of TC with an efficiency of 63.38 % within 2 min, indicating a broadened degradation ability. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the ternary heterojunction broadened the spectral response range, reduced electrochemical impedance, and improved the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. The successful construction of this ternary heterojunction not only provides a promising strategy for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants but also has substantial potential for environmental purification applications.

Slow-light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 mediated by photonic crystal Graphdiyne-Cu/ZnO Z-scheme system

Yanhu Han,Zhaowei Jia,Wenxue Gong,Xuechun Wei,Yu Zhang,Mengying Tao,Yaofei Ren,Zuyi Lu,Yutong Wu,Jianhua Chen,Zhongfeng Shi,Zhenxia Zhao,Zhongxing Zhao

Developing photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity remains a significant challenge in the field of CO 2 photoreduction for producing valuable chemical or fuel products under mild conditions. Herein, photonic crystal (PC) GDY-Cu/ZnO was constructed through the in-situ induced growth of graphdiyne (GDY) on PC Cu/ZnO surface via H 2 -reduction for efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 . With the aid of photonic crystal structure, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO exhibits a distinctive red-edge slow light region which can significantly improve the utilization efficiency of visible light and intensify photo-catalysis. Additionally, the formed all-solid-state Z-scheme system efficiently accelerates photoelectron migration, facilitating e - /h + separation. Thirdly, the surface GDY, along with the enrich oxygen vacancies generated during H 2 reduction, enhances the adsorption and activation toward CO 2 and H 2 O on PC GDY-Cu/ZnO interface. In consequence, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO demonstrates highly photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 , achieving a CH 4 yield of 33.67 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 93.3 % selectivity via slow-light-driven photocatalysis CO 2 reduction. This work provides an efficient strategy to modify ZnO for the efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 .

Weakness-complementing Z-scheme black phosphorus/TiO2 heterojunction with efficient charge separation and photocatalytic overall water splitting activity

Xiaosong Zhou,Jiabao Liang,Limei Xu,Siyu Wu,Minyi Xie,Qiongdan Liang,Jin Luo,Xuliang Fan,Xunfu Zhou,Xiaoqin Zhou

The photocatalytic efficiency of Black P is limited by its rapid carrier recombination and poor oxidation ability. In contrast, the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO 2 is limited by its rapid carrier recombination and poor visible light absorption capability. Given this, coupling Black P with TiO 2 to construct a heterojunction achieves complementary weaknesses. With an effective photocatalytic water splitting activity, Black P/TiO 2 produces hydrogen at a rate of 139.50 μmol h −1 g −1 under visible light, which is 4.73 times more than Black P’s. The main reason for the big increase in photocatalytic activity is that a Z-scheme heterojunction forms between Black P and TiO 2 . The internal built-in electric field promotes the recombination of electrons with low reduction potential and holes with low oxidation potential, achieving spatial separation of photogenerated electrons with high reduction potential and holes with high oxidation potential. This spatial separation endows the heterojunction photocatalyst with excellent redox capabilities.

Z-scheme H-PDI supermolecule/NH2-MIL-101(Fe) for enhanced malathion degradation: Mechanism, pathway, and toxicity assessment

Yuhang Ren,Yu Tian,Yating Lu,Dongyu Nie,Huayi Zhu,Xia Yang

Malathion (MA) is a widely used organophosphorus pesticide globally. Developing efficient photocatalysts is crucial for eliminating MA pollution in water by photocatalytic technology. This study focuses on preparing a series of H-PDI supermolecule/NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) (PM) materials by amidating NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) with the more stable H-PDI supermolecule, forming a covalent O C–NH bond. Among these materials, 40 %PM (indicating a mass percentage content of 40 % H-PDI supermolecule in PM) exhibited the best performance for degradation of MA. Under simulated sunlight irradiation of a 10 mg·L 1 MA solution for 180 min, the reaction rate constants of 40 %PM were 5.95 times and 3.13 times higher than those of NH 2 -MIL-101(Fe) and H-PDI supermolecule, respectively. The enhanced performance is attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the 40 %PM composite lead to fast separation of photogenerated e − and h + . Combining the results of HPLC-MS with Fukui Function, the HOMO, LUMO, and pathway of degradation of MA attracted by 1 O 2 , •OH, and h + were speculated. The pathway involves oxidation, demethylation, P-S bond breakage, decarboxylation, and final conversion to some inorganic molecules. The toxicity of the degradation byproducts were lower than that of MA estimated by Toxicity Estimation Software Tool.

Z-scheme ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH photocatalyst followed dual-channel charge transfer via Au-intercalation for renewable hydrogen production

Ping Bai,Junyu Lang,Yinshu Wang,Haojie Tong,Zelin Wang,Bingbing Zhang,Yiguo Su,Zhanli Chai

Exploration of effective and renewable photocatalysts is essential for solar to hydrogen conversion technologies. However, the application of some photocatalysts with great potential, such as ZnCdS, are seriously limited by the sluggish charge transfer/separation and unavoidable light corrosion. In this work, Au/ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH ternary heterojunction was constructed by introducing Au nanoparticle mediator in core-shell ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH, which exhibits an enhanced H 2 production rate of 4.89 mmol g −1  h −1 under visible light irradiation and unexpected recyclability with 6.2 % rate reduction after 15 consecutive cycles. The enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the dual pathways (Z-scheme and localized surface plasmon resonance) enabled in Au/ZnCdS/NiCo-LDH, which improves the separation of photo-generated carriers, accelerates the electron transport, and provides active sites for photocatalytic oxidation. This work provides a promising technology to jointly improve photocatalytic activity and stability by modulating the interfacial carrier dynamics of photocatalysts.

Enhancing multifunctional photocatalysis with acetate-assisted cesium doping and unlocking the potential of Z-scheme solar water splitting

Mengmeng Ma,Jingzhen Li,Xiaogang Zhu,Kong Liu,Kaige Huang,Guodong Yuan,Shizhong Yue,Zhijie Wang,Shengchun Qu

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has been extensively doped with alkali metals to enlarge photocatalytic output, in which cesium (Cs) doping is predicted to be the most efficient. Nevertheless, the sluggish diffusion and doping kinetics of precursors with high melting points, along with imprecise regulation, have raised the debate on whether Cs doping could make sense. For this matter, we attempt to confirm the positive effects of Cs doping on multifunctional photocatalysis by first using cesium acetate with the character of easy manipulation. The optimized Cs-doped g-C 3 N 4 (CCN) shows a 41.6-fold increase in visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 and impressive degradation capability, especially with 77% refractory tetracycline and almost 100% rhodamine B degraded within an hour. The penetration of Cs + is demonstrated to be a mode of interlayer doping, and Cs–N bonds (especially with sp 2 pyridine N in C═N–C), along with robust chemical interaction and electron exchange, are fabricated. This atomic configuration triggers the broadened spectral response, the improved charge migration, and the activated photocatalytic capacity. Furthermore, we evaluate the CCN/cadmium sulfide hybrid as a Z-scheme configuration, promoting the visible HER yield to 9.02 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is the highest ever reported among all CCN systems. This work adds to the rapidly expanding field of manipulation strategies and supports further development of mediating served for photocatalysis.

HNO3 exfoliated ultrathin g-C3N4 loaded CuZnInS as a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ying Zhang,Chao Qu,Decai Yang,Lanyang Wang,Youguo Luo,Qing Ye

Graphitic carbon nitride-based (g-C 3 N 4 ) catalysts that respond to visible light have exhibited substantial potential for application in water splitting for hydrogen production. However, the material faces challenges such as low quantum efficiency and restricted utilization of visible light. In this study, we developed a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst comprising ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 (ExCN) and CuZnInS (CZIS), which significantly enhances the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. Notably, the hydrogen production rate reached up to 185.23 μmol g −1 h −1 without platinum co-catalysts. Comprehensive characterization and mechanism analysis revealed that the ultrathin, porous structure and oxygen-doped characteristics of ExCN markedly increased the number of active sites and extend the visible light response range. Moreover, ExCN serves as an effective carrier for CZIS particles. The coupling of CZIS with ExCN to form a Z-scheme heterojunction effectively promoted the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The narrow bandgap of CZIS broadens the light response range, while metal sites function as electron traps, suppressing electron-hole recombination and further enhancing catalytic efficiency. This study offers new insights into the rational design of visible-light-responsive hydrogen production catalysts based on graphitic carbon nitride.

Facile synthesis of Z-scheme heterojunction BiOCl/UiO-66-NH2 composites achieves efficient photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B

Huanxia Lin,Wensong Lin,Yeheng Zhang,Ran Gao,Yong He

BiOCl/UiO-66-NH2 photocatalysts were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. BUNH-8 (BiOCl/UiO-66-NH2 composite with 8% UiO-66-NH2) exhibits exceptional photocatalytic performance under visible-light illumination, degrading 92% of rhodamine B (RhB) within 60 minutes, which is 38.16% greater than that of pure BiOCl. The enhanced performance of the BiOCl/UiO-66-NH2 composite photocatalyst can be attributed to the distinct band structure difference between BiOCl and UiO-66-NH2, facilitating effective Z-scheme charge separation and transfer under light irradiation. Superoxide radicals were determined to be the crucial active species in the photocatalytic degradation process via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and a simulated photocatalytic degradation experiment of the dye RhB with scavengers added. Apart from its high efficiency, BUNH-8 demonstrates excellent stability as well. Even after being reused four times, it maintains its excellent photocatalytic performance, suggesting its high potential for application.

High-Z-Sensitized Radiotherapy Synergizes with the Intervention of the Pentose Phosphate Pathway for In Situ Tumor Vaccination

Yuxiang Wang,Jing Chen,Rumeng Duan,Rong Gu,Weiran Wang,Jinhui Wu,Huibo Lian,Yiqiao Hu,Ahu Yuan

In situ tumor vaccination is preliminarily pursued to strengthen antitumor immune response. Immunogenic tumor cell death spontaneously releases abundant antigens and adjuvants for activation of dendritic cells, providing a paragon opportunity for establishing efficient in situ vaccination. Herein, Phy@PLGdH nanosheets are constructed by integrating physcion (Phy, an inhibitor of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP)) with layered gadolinium hydroxide (PLGdH) nanosheets to boost radiation-therapy (RT)-induced immunogenic cell death (ICD) for potent in situ tumor vaccination. It is first observed that sheet-like PLGdH can present superior X-ray deposition and tumor penetrability, exhibiting improved radiosensitization in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the destruction of cellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) and nucleotide homeostasis by Phy-mediated PPP intervention can further amplify PLGdH-sensitized RT-mediated oxidative stress and DNA damage, which correspondingly results in effective ICD and enhance the immunogenicity of irradiated tumor cells. Consequently, Phy@PLGdH-sensitized RT successfully primes robust CD8 + -T-cell-dependent antitumor immunity to potentiate checkpoint blockade immunotherapies against primary and metastatic tumors.
