Constructing a Z-scheme photocatalytic system offers great advantages for boosting photocatalytic performance due to its effective charge carrier transfer and strong redox capability. Herein, Cu 2 S/CuS nanosheets heterojunction were prepared by a facile one-pot solvothermal method. CuS/Cu 2 S Z-scheme heterojunction realized rapid bacteria-killing under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The optimized CuS/Cu 2 S (CuS/Cu 2 S-1) achieved 99 % antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) within 10 min NIR irradiation. Owing to the optimization of CuS/Cu 2 S-1 Z-scheme heterojunction, the efficient interfacial charge separation was realized, thereby resulting in a high yield of reactive oxygen species. Moreover, the heterojunction exhibited locally a higher temperature under NIR irradiation, favorable for eradicating bacteria. In addition, radical scavenging tests and ESR spectra results showed that ⋅O 2 – , ⋅OH and 1 O 2 were main active species responsible for sterilization. Under the synergy of photocatalytic and photothermal effects, the membrane structure of bacteria was severely damaged in CuS/Cu 2 S-1 system. This study not only offers a reliable approach for photothermocatalytic inactivation, but also affords the bases for the development of Z-scheme heterojunction aimed at designing highly efficient photocatalysts.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common heterogeneous skin disease. Currently, effective primary prevention approaches that hamper the occurrence of mild to moderate AD have not been reported. In this work, the quaternized β-chitin dextran (QCOD) hydrogel was adopted as a topical carrier system for topical and transdermal delivery of salidroside for the first time. Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) is caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus multilocularis, which shows characteristics of malignant tumors with high mortality. However, traditional diagnostic imaging methods are still not sufficient for the recognition of HAE microlesions in the early stages. Near-infrared-II (900–1700 nm, NIR-II) fluorescence microscopic imaging (NIR-II-FMI) has shown great potential for biomedical detection. A novel type of negative target imaging method based on NIR-II-FMI with the assistance of indocyanine green (ICG) was explored. Then, NIR-II-FMI was applied to the early detection of HAE for the first time. The negative targeting NIR-II fluorescence imaging of HAE-infected mice at different stages with the assistance of ICG under 808 nm of laser irradiation was obtained. Especially, HAE microlesions at the early stage were detected clearly. Moreover, clear intrahepatic angiography was achieved under the same NIR-II-FMI system.

Cr 3+ doped phosphor shows great potential for near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LED), but it suffers from low quantum efficiency and poor thermal stability. Herein, a novel Cr 3+ doped broadband NIR garnet Ca 3 Sc 2 Ge 3 O 12 phosphor was developed. The multisite structure of the emission band is investigated by site-selective spectroscopy and is attributed to the octahedral Cr 3+ perturbed by defects. Moreover, we propose different strategies to enhance the luminescence of the phosphor, including enhancement of crystallinity and elimination of defects. Compared with the initial sample, the emission intensity of the optimized phosphor is improved for 8.6 times. The optimal Ca 3 Sc 2 Ge 3 O 12 : 0.06Cr 3+ phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability. At 423 K, the integral emission intensity of the optimal sample remains 94.7% of that at room temperature. Finally, high-performance NIR LED was fabricated using a blue LED and the title phosphor. The packaged LED lamp has high radiance (109.3 mW@300 mA) and photoelectric efficiency (15.96%@40 mA). Our study not only provides a boulevard for enhancing the luminescence of Cr doped NIR phosphor, but also gives a new perspective for understanding the multisite luminescence of Cr 3+ in garnet host.

Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The disease progression of sepsis is very fast, and there is a 7–9% increase in mortality every hour. Therefore, rapid and sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for the timely treatment of sepsis as well as the reduction of mortality. Herein, we present a sensitive near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence identification and a rapid magnetic capture based on bioorthogonal nanoprobes for the detection of multiple bacteria in whole blood. The nanoprobes with NIR fluorescence/magnetic properties were modified with dibenzocyclooctyne groups and used to capture and recognize the bacteria via bioorthogonal reaction. The magnetic nanoprobes showed superparamagnetic properties with a saturation magnetization as high as 63 emu/g. Through clicking with the azide groups inserted on the bacteria walls by metabolic engineering, the bioorthogonal magnetic nanoprobes allow fast and broad-spectrum capture of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The bioorthogonal NIR fluorescent nanoprobes with a maximum emission at 900 nm can effectively avoid background interference, further enabling sensitive identification of the bacteria in whole blood. The detection limit was as low as 4 CFU/mL in less than 2.5 h and the nanoprobes were successfully applied to the detection of bacteria in blood samples from the patients with sepsis, showing the potential application in early sepsis diagnosis and clinical studies.

Molybdenum oxide, as one of the important transition metal semiconductor materials with photothermal property, has received increasing attention in the field of catalysis, sensing, energy storage, and clinical biomedicine. To improve its certain limitations such as poor biocompatibility and easy agglomeration during application as biomaterials and promote its performance as photothermal agent in biomedical fields, polyethylene glycol (PEG)–modified molybdenum oxide was synthesized and the synthesis conditions during the hydrothermal process, including the pH values and the amount of PEG added, were adjusted. Owing to the reduction function of PEG, as-obtained PEG-MoO x showed good photostability and colloidal stability, which were beneficial to its application in long-term clinical photothermal therapy. In addition, cell experiments indicated that PEG-MoO x particles exhibited low cytotoxicity and ability of photothermal killing for HeLa cells. With the increase PEG-MoO x particles in solution, the photothermal ablation ability of PEG-MoO x particles for the HeLa cells was enhanced under an 808-nm NIR laser irradiation. Hence, PEG-MoO x particles have great potential in the photothermal treatment of diseases.

In recent years, cancer treatment has been facing the challenge of increasing antitumor efficiency and avoiding severe adverse effects simultaneously. In this study, we designed a controlled release drug delivery system , doxorubicin (Dox)-loaded and hyaluronic acid (HA)-modified PEGylated gold nanocages (AuNCs), which was designated as PEG-HAn-AuNCs/Dox (n represented 10 n HA repeating units were modified on each AuNC). In this system, AuNCs were applied as the photothermal cores, Dox was employed as the model drug, HA was applied as the tumor-microenvironment responsive switch to achieve controlled release, and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as the stealth polymer to prolong systemic circulation time. Firstly, we evaluated the physical and chemical properties of the PEG-HAn-AuNCs/Dox with different ratios of HA to AuNC and found that PEG-HA4-AuNCs/Dox was the optimal. Secondly, PEG-HA4-AuNCs/Dox revealed the feature of controlled release, namely, the drug release was triggered by hyaluronidase (HAase) and accelerated by the acidic pH and near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. And then PEG-HA4-AuNCs/Dox could be effectively delivered to a cultured SMMC-7721 cell line in vitro and the tumor tissues of the subcutaneous mouse models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in vivo . Finally, the results demonstrated the synergetic therapy, namely the combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT) (defined as chemo-photothermal therapy) mediated by PEG-HA4-AuNCs/Dox, could efficiently inhibit the tumor growth both in vitro and in vivo . Therefore, the advantages of PEG-HA4-AuNCs/Dox endowed it as a great potential candidate for HCC treatment.

Although photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) are widely commended for tumor treatment recently, they still suffer severe challenges due to the non-specificity of photothermal agents (PTAs)/photosensitizers (PSs) and hypoxic tumor microenvironment . Here, an oxygen independent biomimetic nanoplatform based on carbon sphere dotted with cerium oxide and coated by cell membrane (MCSCe) was designed and synthesized with good biocompatibility , homologous targeting ability, and improved photophysical activity. Notably, MCSCe could realize accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in tumor cells and hyperthermia under single laser (808 nm) irradiation, which were simultaneously utilized by itself to produce more toxic hydroxyl radical ( OH). Resultantly, the synergistic therapeutic effect against tumor cells was obtained under near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was hindered by the poor water solubility and long-enduring photoactivities of photosensitizers . Here, we developed a novel controllable photodynamic agent CPHI based on β-cyclodextrin modified polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer (CP) co-delivery of indocyanine green (ICG) and hematoporphyrin (HP). The CPHI possessed appropriate particle sizes and zeta potentials , considerable photostability, and NIR-triggered release property. The fluorescence of HP could be quenched by ICG when HP and ICG were co-loaded inside the CP, and the quenching efficiency was related with the weight ratio of HP and ICG. When the feeding weight proportion of HP and ICG is 1/10, the fluorescence of HP was quenched by 87.3% in CPHI. Under 808 nm laser irradiation , the ICG in CP was degraded, and the fluorescence of HP could recover. The recovered HP was capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) for PDT with 606 nm laser irradiation. The cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis studies showed that CPHI could effectively induce MCF-7 cells apoptosis with PDT effects under 808/660 nm laser. These results suggested that CPHI could be an efficient cancer therapeutic agent for controllable PDT with low dark toxicity.

Chemo-photothermal therapy has shown enormous potential in treating cancer. To achieve the chemo-photothermal synergistic effect, an efficient nanoparticulate system with the ability for simultaneous codelivery of chemotherapeutic drug and photothermal agent as well as photothermal-triggered drug release is highly desirable. Herein, an in situ polymerization within liposome template was designed to prepare liposome-coated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AAM)) nanogels, which can efficiently coencapsulate a NIR dye indocyanine green (ICG) and high amount of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). The DOX/ICG coloaded hybrid nanogels, denoted as DI-NGs@lipo, integrated the desirable functions of PEGylated liposomes and thermosensitive nanogels. The PEGylated liposome shell provided excellent storage stability, hemodynamic stability, and fluorescence stability. Meanwhile, the thermosensitive P(NIPAM-co-AAM) nanogels core endowed DI-NGs@lipo with volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) at about 40 °C, allowing for thermo-controlled transformation and drug release. The significant photothermal effect of DI-NGs@lipo and the simultaneous hyperthermia-triggered DOX release were observed under NIR light irradiation. The DI-NGs@lipo was demonstrated to be uptaken by 4T1 murine breast cancer cells via endocytosis, enhancing the distribution of DOX in the cell nucleus. Compared with chemo or photothermal treatment alone, the combination treatment of DI-NGs@lipo with NIR light irradiation induced significantly higher cytotoxicity to 4T1 cells, demonstrating the chemo-photothermal synergistic therapeutic effects on tumor cells. In a word, the strategy provided here offers a facile approach to develop a multifunctional nanoplatform for codelivery of DOX and ICG, which can synergistically improve the cancer-cell-killing efficiency, demonstrating great potential in chemo-photothermal therapy.

Theranostic nanoprobes integrated with dual-modal imaging and therapeutic functions, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT), have exhibited significant potency in cancer treatments due to their high imaging accuracy and non-invasive advantages for cancer elimination. However, biocompatibility and highly efficient accumulation of these nanoprobes in tumor are still unsatisfactory for clinical application. In this study, a photosensitizer -loaded magnetic nanobead with surface further coated with a layer of cancer cell membrane (SSAP-Ce6@CCM) was designed to improve the biocompatibility and cellular uptake and ultimately achieve enhanced MR/NIR fluorescence imaging and PDT efficacy. Compared with similar nanobeads without CCM coating, SSAP-Ce6@CCM showed significantly enhanced cellular uptake, as evidenced by Prussian blue staining, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and flow cytometric analysis. Consequently, SSAP-Ce6@CCM displayed a more distinct MR/NIR imaging ability and more obvious photo-cytotoxicity towards cancer cells under 670 nm laser irradiation. Furthermore, the enhanced PDT effect benefited from the surface coating of cancer cell membrane was demonstrated in SMMC-7721 tumor-bearing mice through tumor growth observation and tumor tissue pathological examination. Therefore, this CCM-disguised nanobead that integrated the abilities of MR/NIR fluorescence dual-modal imaging and photodynamic therapy might be a promising theranostic platform for tumor treatment.

The cytotoxicities of the elements of current quantum dots (QDs) greatly restrict their applications in biomedical fields. Herein, we firstly proposed and synthesized oil-soluble heavier-element-free (or Cd-free) CuFeS2/ZnS QDs, and focused on the synthetic controls over the core/shell structure. It was found that although the as-prepared CuFeS2 QDs are nonemissive, the in situ ZnS-overcoating could make them exhibit bright near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) (PL peak at 840 nm; PL quantum yield (QY) up to 52%). We also analyzed their shape, structure and elemental composition in detail. Next, by the interaction between oil-soluble QDs and liposomes, the aqueous QD-laden liposomes (named as LipQDs) were fabricated, allowing further exploration of bio-application. Finally, after further decorating with isolated macrophage membrane, the resulting LipQDs@M nanocomposites were observed to target actively postoperative tumor inflamed tissue (or other inflamed tissues), using an in vivo small animal IR optical imaging system. Our results indicate that these NIR-emitting CuFeS2/ZnS QDs should be a new promising fluorescent marker for biomedical optical imaging, as an alternative for Cd-, Hg-, and Pb-based ones.
