Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is an important method in the treatment of liver cancer and identification of an ideal microsphere for embolization is a key step in its development. Here, we used a microfluidic device to prepare uniformly sized Photopolymerized pH-Responsive GelMA Microspheres with Doxorubicin Modification (DOX-GelMA) that integrated embolization and drug delivery properties. The acid-sensitive doxorubicin (DOX) prodrug was synthesized through a three-step reaction and coupled during curing of the microspheres under UV irradiation. The microspheres exhibited significant pH-responsive drug release in the tumor microenvironment and had a good degradation performance over 18 days. Microscopic images and scanning electron microscopy results showed that the microspheres had good sphericity and uniform particle size (96.61 ± 0.046 μm), and that the particle size and their degree of swelling were suitable for embolization therapy. In vitro cytotoxicity and blood compatibility experiments showed that the microspheres were good biocompatible. The drug-loaded microspheres had obvious inhibitory effect on HepG2. A rabbit ear embolization study demonstrated that the microspheres could effectively block arterial blood flow. The DOX-GelMA microspheres simultaneously achieved physical targeted therapy and chemotherapy, and had great prospects in TACE therapy.

ObjectiveEnhancing the mechanical properties of composite resins and promoting dentin remineralization are effective strategies for extending the longevity of restorations. In this study, we developed a pH-responsive composite resin reinforced with phosphorylated chitosan (Pchi)/amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) and amino-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) (Pchi/ACP@A-MSN complexes). Methods MSNs and Pchi/ACP were synthesized, and the resulting composite resins were classified into five groups based on the filler compositions: Group A (45wt.% A-MSNs + 15wt.% Pchi/ACP + 40wt.% resin matrix), Group B (22.5wt.% A-MSNs + 37.5wt.% Pchi/ACP@A-MSNs + 40wt.% resin matrix), Group C (45wt.% nonporous silica + 15wt.% Pchi/ACP + 40wt.% resin matrix), Group D (15wt.% Pchi/ACP + 85wt.% resin matrix), and Group E (100wt.% resin matrix). The degree of double-bond conversion and mechanical properties (Flexural modulus, flexural strength, and Vickers hardness) of each group were measured. The remineralization performance and calcium ion (Ca²⁺) release performance were observed. Cell viability was evaluated by CCK-8 assay. Results Group A exhibited the highest mechanical performance, with flexural strength of 115 ± 9.68 MPa, flexural modulus of 5.99 ± 0.44 GPa, and Vickers hardness of 31.73 ± 2.39 HV. All groups achieved double-bond conversion rates > 50% after 60 s of light curing (P > 0.05). At pH 4.0, Group B exhibited the highest Ca²⁺ release (276 µg/mL), while Group D had the highest release at pH 7.4 (128 µg/mL). SEM and EDS analyses indicated that Group D achieved the most substantial dentin remineralization, followed by Groups C and A. All groups maintained cell viability above 75% throughout the 7-day assay, with no significant cytotoxicity observed. Conclusion A composite formulation containing 45 wt% A-MSNs and 15 wt% Pchi/ACP (Group A) significantly enhanced mechanical strength. The 15 wt% Pchi/ACP formulation (Group D) demonstrated the greatest remineralization effect. Group B, combining A-MSNs and Pchi/ACP@A-MSNs, provided pH-responsive Ca²⁺ release with a favorable balance of mechanical performance and remineralization potential. All formulations met the biocompatibility requirements for dental applications.

In this study, a pH-responsive nanophotosensitizer (MT@Ce6) was rationally developed by strategic integration of MIL-101 (Fe)-NH 2 metal–organic framework with tannic acid (TA) and chlorin e6. This nanocomposite exhibits pH-responsive degradation in acidic microenvironments, facilitating Fe 3+ release and subsequent reduction to Fe 2+ that catalyzes Fenton reaction-mediated hydroxyl radical (•OH) generation. This cascade reaction shifts reactive oxygen species (ROS) predominance from transient singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) to the long-range penetrative •OH, achieving robust biofilm disruption and over 90% eradication of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) under 660 nm irradiation. In vivo evaluations revealed accelerated wound healing with 95% wound closure within 7 days, while species-selective antibacterial studies demonstrated a 2.3-fold enhanced potency against Gram-positive bacteria due to their unique peptidoglycan-rich cell wall architecture. These findings collectively establish a microenvironment-adaptive nanoplatform for precision antimicrobial interventions, providing a translational strategy to address drug-resistant infections.

Accurately characterizing the proton’s spatiotemporal distribution is critical for elucidating proton/electron generation and transfer mechanisms in electroactive biofilms (EABs). This study employed ratiometric fluorescence sensing for nondestructive, real-time pH mapping in current-producing EABs. The distribution of protons in EABs is determined by both their generation, which is electron donor-dependent, and their transfer, mediated by concentration gradients and buffering effects. Real-time pH mapping evidenced that under low organic conditions (≤0.4 g/L NaAc) in a PBS-free system, proton diffusion driven solely by concentration gradients prevented internal acidification (pH ≥ 6). However, elevated organics (0.8 g/L NaAc) triggered excessive proton accumulation exceeding transfer capacity, resulting in pronounced acidification (pH < 6) and subsequent electroactivity suppression. It also showed that while employing PBS maintained a neutral pH (∼7) for sustained current generation, it concurrently diminished the intrinsic proton concentration gradient, impairing proton diffusion efficiency. Finally, the electron flux was further derived in two ways: converted from the stoichiometric relationship with proton flux (Je, cal) and calculated from the measured current (Je, test) by applying proton flux, and a better linear fitting correlation was achieved when there was no PBS. This evidences the possibility to trace electron transfer through monitoring protons.

Acute gouty arthritis (AGA), characterized by the excessive formation of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals and severe inflammation, has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. The first-line clinical treatment for AGA, colchicine, is often limited by substantial side effects and poor oral bioavailability. To overcome these challenges, we have developed hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dissolvable microneedle (MN) patches loaded with calcium carbonate pH-responsive microspheres (Cur@CaCO3) containing curcumin (Cur) to control the release of Cur. The MN patches deliver Cur@CaCO3 to the site of joint lesions in a minimally invasive manner. At the lesion site, Cur@CaCO3 reacts with uric acid to facilitate MSU decomposition, subsequently releasing Cur without adverse effects. Through the synergistic effects of CaCO3 and Cur, the levels of uric acid and inflammation are reduced, effectively alleviating the symptoms of AGA. These pH-responsive microneedle patches present an innovative approach to traditional AGA treatments and show great promise for widespread clinical application.

The application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries in large-scale energy storage systems is significantly limited by the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although conventional pH-adjusting additives can reduce the overpotential of HER, it is imperative to simultaneously modulate the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and the electrical double layer (EDL) structure to enhance the utilization of zinc metal. This research develops a multifunctional pH-controlling additive, the bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino-tris(hydroxymethyl)methane (BT). First, the addition of BT increases the pH of the electrolyte to 5.9, which is within its effective buffer zone, and simultaneously reduces the HER potential to −1.107 V versus Ag/AgCl. Second, the inhibitory effect on HER can be further enhanced by the preferential adsorption of BT molecules containing multiple hydroxyl functional groups on the zinc anode, leading to a reduction in the number of active water molecules in the EDL. Third, BT molecules participate in the solvation structure to accomplish preferential reduction, which promotes the uniform deposition of Zn 2+ ions by forming nitrogen-containing SEI. Ultimately, the symmetric battery accomplishes 2700 stable cycles in BT-3 electrolyte. More crucially, the corresponding Zn//MnO 2 full battery (1 A g −1 ) is able to release a specific capacity of 117.2 mA h g −1 after 600 cycles.

The interactions between grass carp myofibrillar proteins (MPs) and selected aldehydes under different pH conditions were analyzed. The results showed that the binding capacity of MPs to the aldehydes followed the order: nonanal > octanal > hexanal, and their binding capacity increased with rising pH (5–9). MPs-aldehyde interactions exhibited static and dynamic quenching, predominantly mediated by hydrophobic forces, with pH exerting no effect on the quenching mode. With the increase of pH, the imolecular quenching constant, binding constant, and binding sites number of MP and aldehyde gradually increased. Meanwhile, MPs-aldehyde interactions modulated the microenvironment of tryptophan and tyrosine residues, with elevated pH levels amplifying this effect. The presence of aldehydes significantly and differentially reduced the secondary structure in MPs at different pH conditions. Besides, molecular docking result revealed that pH affected the interaction between grass carp proteins and aldehydes by thier altering the binding sites and binding free energy.

The therapeutic efficacy of Bortezomib (BTZ) is severely limited by its low solubility, poor stability in vivo and nonspecific toxicity. PEGylated nanocarriers can improve drug delivery efficiency, but their applications often suffer from low drug loading, premature leakage and accelerated blood clearance phenomenon. Herein a kind of catechol-functionalized and sulfobetaine-based zwitterionic block copolymer (PGMAD-PSBMA) is prepared by RAFT copolymerization and an epoxy-amino click reaction. And then PGMAD-PSBMA is readily used to conjugate with BTZ by the formation of dynamic boronate bonds to obtain zwitterionic BTZ prodrug (PGMAD@BTZ-PSBMA) and PGMAD@BTZ-PSBMA micelles. The structure and morphology, physicochemical characteristics, drug loading, pH-triggered drug release as well as in vitro cytotoxicity of PGMAD@BTZ-PSBMA micelles are investigated in detail. The results demonstrate that PGMAD@BTZ-PSBMA micelles can not only possess high drug loading (12.9%) and stable dispersion in physiological pH condition (pH 7.4), but also respond to the tumor acid microenvironment and achieve pH-responsive BTZ release. The nanocarriers designed here readily combine the desirable functions of polycatechols for stable conjugation and acid-triggered release and polysulfobetaines for long circulation in blood, which have great potential to enhance therapeutic efficacy and reduce toxic side effects of BTZ and other boronic acid-containing drugs, such as Ixazomib and Steboronine.

Considering the differences in pH between bacterial infection microenvironment and normal tissues, a series of pH-responsive drug-release amphiphilic polyurethane copolymers (DPU-g-PEG) have been prepared in this work. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and 1H NMR was selected to detect the structure of the condensed polymers. The DPU-g-PEG amphiphilic copolymers could form stable micelles with a hydrophilic shell of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and a hydrophobic core of polylactic acid (PLA). We loaded a model drug called triclosan onto DPU-g-PEG micelles and studied how pH affects their particle size, Zeta potential, and drug release performance. The results revealed that when exposed to acidic conditions, the surface potential of DPU-g-PEG micelles changed, the micelles’ particle size increased, and the drug release performance was significantly enhanced. These results suggested that the micelles prepared in this study can release more antibacterial substances at sites of bacterial infection. Meanwhile, we also investigated the impact of different ratios of soft and hard segments on the properties of micelles, and the results showed that the pH responsiveness of micelles was strongest when the ratio of soft segments (PLLA diol + PEG 2000): 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI): 2,6-Bis-(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindole-1,3,5,7-tetraone (DMA) = 1: 1.2: 0.2. Furthermore, the results of inhibition zone test, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) all confirmed the antibacterial activity of triclosan-load DPU-g-PEG micelles. In conclusion, the DPU-g-PEG micelles produced in this study have the potential to be used as intelligent drug delivery systems in the biomedical field.

Low ionic content of sweat markers and the weak bioelectrical signals necessitate the design of high-performance signal conditioning circuits to enhance the functionality of the sensors. In this paper, pH sensor based on a polyaniline (PANI) membrane and an NTC thermistor are used to sense sweat pH and temperature, respectively. The linearity, reproducibility, selectivity, and long-term stability PANI pH sensors are evaluated using electrochemical workstation. The sensitivity of pH sensor is 55.32 mV/pH in the range of pH 4–10. The flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) integrates the LT1462 amplifier with low bias input current enhancing the response signal gain of the pH sensor, which achieves a measured slope of 76.41 mV/pH, significantly exceeding the conventional Nernst theoretical value of 59.16 mV/pH at 25°C. The pH sensor integrated with FPCB is applied to detect actual samples, such as food and synthetic sweat, and the results are consistent with commercial pH meter. Finally, the wearable sweat sensing system was integrated with sensors, FPCB, power supply battery and hydrogel patch for the real-time monitoring of temperature and pH, indicating the reliability for practical application. The results of this study are expected to be applied in the fields of health monitoring and sports physiology research.

The selectivity and desorption capacity of adsorbent materials significantly impact adsorption capacity and recyclability. Developing resin-based boron adsorbents that simultaneously exhibit high specificity, large adsorption capacity, and excellent cycling performance remains a prevalent challenge for the extraction and removal of boron from aqueous systems. In this study, a series of polyurethane nanomaterials with dendritic structures and tertiary N as the pH-responsive branching center were designed and prepared. The particle size and surface morphology of the material were characterized using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The influence of two microstructure dynamic changes, namely “density” and “expansion”, triggered by pH, on its boron adsorption performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the material had excellent specific selectivity. By taking advantage of the protonation property of tertiary N and exploring the adsorption performance of the material under pH regulation, the adsorption capacity could reach up to 172 mg·g −1 , achieving a 28 % increase. Meanwhile, the response characteristic of enhanced hydrophilicity at low pH enabled the material to be restored to its initial state during the desorption process, thus having the ability to be reused multiple times. This research not only presented a high-performance boron adsorbent, but also showcased a new paradigm for designing next-generation adsorption materials through “intelligent response”, offering a brand-new approach for achieving efficient and precise control of the adsorption process.

This study introduces a novel pH-responsive Janus emulsifier based on snowman-shaped NH 2 -PS@SiO 2 Janus nanoparticles, demonstrating exceptional interfacial activity and intelligent demulsification control. The synthesized particles achieved a significant reduction in oil-water interfacial tension by 15.08 mN/m at a 1 wt% concentration, while forming stable Pickering emulsions with average droplet sizes of 72.04 μm. The system exhibited rapid and reversible pH-responsive behavior: immediate demulsification occurred under acidic conditions (pH < 7) through amino group protonation, whereas alkaline conditions (pH > 7) maintained stability via deprotonation. Zeta potential measurements confirmed charge-switching capability across a pH range of 2–12, enabling four cycles of controlled emulsification-demulsification. The unique amphiphilic Janus architecture facilitated vertical anchoring at oil-water interfaces, substantially enhancing emulsion stability compared to homogeneous counterparts. This work establishes a versatile platform for smart emulsion systems requiring on-demand destabilization.
