Significant progress has been made in the synthesis and application of core–shell nanoparticles in the past decade. But particle agglomerations are hard to avoid as the formation mechanisms of core–shell nanoparticles are still vague and not clear even for the simplest and most straightforward hard-templating method. Here, analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) is applied to investigate the formation of polystyrene@ZIF-8 core–shell nanoparticles, as a model to understand the hard-templating method. It has been found that the concentration of the ZIF-8 precursor influences both the ZIF-8 shell formation and the agglomeration of the polystyrene (PS) template. An overdiluted ZIF-8 precursor is not suitable for ZIF-8 shell formation, while a highly concentrated ZIF-8 precursor causes strong aggregation of the PS core. By applying the optimal precursor concentration identified by AUC, well-dispersed polystyrene@ZIF-8 core–shell nanoparticles can be obtained.

In this study, by the application of the strong interaction between a metal-organic framework material and ofloxacin, ZIF-8 was proposed as an absorbent to remove ofloxacin from wastewater. The results demonstrated that ZIF-8 could remove 96.3 ± 1.1% of ofloxacin from the ofloxacin solution of 100 mg/L, and the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity reached 194.1 ± 0.4 mg/g, which is superior to that of an adsorbent based on physical adsorption. The high specific surface area and strong interaction between ofloxacin and ZIF-8, including strong hydrogen bonding , complexation of unsaturated metals, and electrostatic interactions , contributed to the adsorption process . Moreover, the adsorption efficiency reached 80.2% after four adsorption cycles. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption model can describe the adsorption of ofloxacin by ZIF-8. Therefore, ZIF-8 is a promising material for the treatment of wastewater containing ofloxacin.

Highly selective hydrogenation of furfural and levulinic acid (LA) was studied over Ni 0.09 Zn/NC 600 derived from zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. The existence of active Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 particles in Ni 0.09 Zn/NC 600 was confirmed by multiple characterizations. As a result, over Ni 0.09 Zn/NC 600 , 99.7% of furfural conversion (FC) and 100% of furan-2-ylmethanol selectivity (FMS) were achieved in isopropanol (IP) at 170 °C for 2 h, while FC and (tetrahydrofuran-2-yl)methanol (THFM) selectivity are 97.5% and 86.4% in water at 150 °C for 1 h. Over the same catalyst, LA was completely converted to γ-valerolactone in water at 95 °C for 0.5 h. The catalyst is still highly active after 6 cycles of recycling with 92.8% of FC and 100% of FMS in IP at 170 °C for 1.5 h and 90.1% of LA conversion and 100% of γ-valerolactone selectivity in water at 80 °C for 0.5 h.

It is challenging to fabricate stable, complete, controllable, homogeneous metal–organic framework composites. Hereof, we suggested a versatile method where nanocrystals were assembled inside the porous polymer by synergistic chemical synthesis and permeation flow in and through its pores. The poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)/ZnO and PTFE/ZIF-8 were fabricated as the prototype of the composites. For fabricating the composite, ZnO was first synthesized inside the pores followed by ligand vapor treatment. The even and well-distributed ZnO nanorods of 10–30 nm were synthesized inside pores of PTFE and converted into ZIF-8. The ZnO and ZIF-8 were quantified in 281 and 431 mg g–1 against the original PTFE, respectively. The composite is stable and the nanocrystals are not readily washed away. The adsorption uptake (C3 > C2 > C1) of the light hydrocarbon gases for the PTFE/ZIF-8 nanocomposite were preliminarily evaluated. The adsorption selectivities were calculated, where the selectivities for C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4 were 10.9 and 42.8, respectively.

A robust and durable fluorinated 8-MAPOSS-based superamphiphobic fabric (Fabrics-S-MAPOSS-F) was obtained by in situ grafting of 3-Mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES), 8-Methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (8-MAPOSS) and 2-(perfluorooctyl) ethyl methacrylate (FMA) on a cotton fabric. The micropores and mesopores bonding structure with low surface energy on the as-prepared Fabrics-S-MAPOSS-F can capture air, endowing the fabric antifouling, self-cleaning, dehydration resistance, buoyancy boost, drag reduction performance, as well as good durability after UV irradiation, mechanical damage, 300 °C oven heating for 2 h and separately immersion in acid/base/salty solution, even in 98% H 2 SO 4 for 30 min. The Fabrics-S-MAPOSS-F can float on the surface of water or blended oil effortlessly with loading 18.8 times and 15.6 times its own weight of SiO 2 powder, respectively. Compared to untreated fabric, the Fabrics-S-MAPOSS-F exhibits a sailing velocity boost by nearly 2.5 times in both water and blended oil. The drag reduction rate is as high as ~154.7%. This novel smart Fabrics-S-MAPOSS-F can be considered a promising material in life jacket, special garments, package protection or smart device.

Candida rugosa lipase (CRL, EC3.1.1.3) is one of the main enzymes synthesizing esters, and ZIF-8 was chosen as an immobilization carrier for lipase. Enzyme activity testing often requires expensive reagents as substrates, and the experiment processes are time-consuming and inconvenient. As a result, a novel approach based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRs) was developed for predicting CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. The absorbance of the immobilized enzyme catalytic system was evaluated using UV–Vis spectroscopy to investigate the amount of CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. The powdered samples' near-infrared spectra were obtained. The sample’s enzyme activity data were linked with each sample’s original NIR spectra to establish the NIR model. A partial least squares (PLS) model of immobilized enzyme activity was developed by coupling spectral preprocessing with a variable screening technique. The experiments were completed within 48 h to eliminate inaccuracies between the reduction in enzyme activity with increasing laying-aside time throughout the test and the NIRs modeling. The root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV), the correlation coefficient of validation set (R) value, and the ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) value were employed as assessment model indicators. The near-infrared spectrum model was developed by merging the best 2nd derivative spectral preprocessing with the Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) variable screening method. This model's root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) was 0.368 U/g, the correlation coefficient of calibration set (R_cv) value was 0.943, the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) set was 0.414 U/g, the correlation coefficient of validation set (R) value was 0.952, and the ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) was 3.0. The model demonstrates that the fitting relationship between the predicted and the reference enzyme activity value of the NIRs is satisfactory. The findings revealed a strong relationship between NIRs and CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. As a result, the established model could be implemented to quantify the enzyme activity of CRL/ZIF-8 quickly by including more variations of natural samples. The prediction method is simple, rapid, and adaptable to be the theoretical and practical basis for further studying other interdisciplinary research work in enzymology and spectroscopy.

As the largest group of synthetic dyes, azo dyes can pose various health and environmental risks due to their widespread use and challenging degradation. Laccases are efficient green biocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Herein, we report thein situpackaging of laccase in copper-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) for the decolorization of reactive black 5, which is a model azo dye. The immobilization support (Cu5/mZIF-8) was obtained via lowering the precursor ratio of ZIF-8 and incorporating copper ions during the synthesis process. Cu5/mZIF-8 were found to be nanospheres with an average diameter of around 150 nm. Laccase encapsulated in Cu5/mZIF-8 showed an activity recovery of 75.6%, which was 2.2 times higher than that of the laccase embedded in ZIF-8. Meanwhile, the immobilized laccase (Lac@Cu5/mZIF-8) showed a higher catalytic activity in organic solvents than that of the free enzyme. In the presence of a mediator, Lac@Cu5/mZIF-8 could remove 95.7% of reactive black 5 in 40 min. After four consecutive cycles, the dye decolorization efficiency declined to 28%. About four transformation products of reactive black 5 were identified via LC-MS analysis, and the potential decolorization mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the immobilized laccase could be used as an efficient biocatalyst in dye decolorization. Keywords:laccase;zeolitic imidazolate framework-8;immobilization;dye decolorization

The stability of Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts is a key issue in the hydroformylation of olefins. Confinement of active Rh species has been considered an effective strategy to achieve stable catalysts. In this work, a phosphine ligand was successfully confined in ZIF-8 material and coordinated with Rh metal by a reduction procedure to develop an efficient and stable Rh-based catalyst for hydroformylation of 1-octene. The results indicate that the catalyst reduced at 300 °C under H2 atmosphere exhibits better stability than that with NaBH4 as reductant and undoped P catalyst. Various characterization studies demonstrate that the superior performance is due to the strong interaction between Rh metal and P, which inhibits the leaching of active Rh species. This work reveals an effective strategy for the synthesis of highly stable catalysts for use in the hydroformylation reaction.

Supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted extensive attention due to the properties of high power density, long cycle life, and high rate performance. However, the high self-discharge is one giant challenge for long-term energy storage applications of SC. Herein, we prepared a high-performance SC with low self-discharge based on nitrogen-sulfur co-doped ZIF-8-derived (NS-PC) materials. The synergistic effects of high-temperature carbonization and nitrogen-sulfur (N-S) doping are systematically investigated. With a carbonization temperature of 900 °C, assisted with N-S doping, the maximum specific capacitance of the NS-PC-900//NS-PC-900 symmetrical SC is 42.7 F g −1 , while the power densities range from 650 to 13,000 W kg −1 at the energy densities of 10.04–7.5 Wh kg −1 . The specific capacitance remains 95.7 % even after 20,000 charge-discharge cycles. More importantly, the as-prepared NS-PC-900//NS-PC-900 SC exhibits an ultra-low self-discharge rate of solely 0.025 V h −1 within 24 h. This work provides a universal strategy to fabricate high-performance SCs with low self-discharge.

Ovarian cancer (OC) stands as the second most prominent factor leading to cancer-related fatalities, characterized by a notably low five-year survival rate. The insidious onset of OC combined with its resistance to chemotherapy poses significant challenges in terms of treatment, emphasizing the utmost importance of developing innovative therapeutic agents. Despite its remarkable anti-tumor efficacy, celastrol (CEL) faces challenges regarding its clinical utilization in OC due to its restricted water solubility and notable side effects. In this study, celastrol (CEL) was encapsulated into Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8) nanoparticle and grafted with biotin-conjugated polyethylene glycol (CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO). Comprehensive comparisons of the physicochemical properties and anticancer activities of CEL and CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO were conducted. Our findings revealed that CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO exhibited favorable characteristics, including hydrodynamic diameters of 234.5 nm, excellent water solubility, high drug loading (31.60% ± 2.85), encapsulation efficiency (60.52% ± 2.79), and minimal side effects. Furthermore, CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO can release chemicals in response to an acidic micro-environment, which is more likely a tumor micro-environment. In vitro, studies showed that CEL@ZIF-8@BIO inhibited cell proliferation, led to mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) decline, and generated reactive oxygen species in OC cells. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO enhanced anti-tumor activity against OC via up-regulated apoptosis-promoting biomarkers and rendered cancer cell apoptosis via the P38/JNK MAPK signaling pathway. In conclusion, we have successfully developed a novel drug delivery system (CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO), resulting in significant improvements in both water solubility and anti-tumor efficacy thereby providing valuable insights for future clinical drug development.

The effective removal of common refractory antibiotics from livestock and poultry farming wastewater has attracted widespread attention. Developing high-performance adsorbents for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater is a highly promising method. Herein, a derivative from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (D-ZIF-8) was successfully prepared, characterized, and used for the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ). Results showed that the D-ZIF-8 was a superior mesoporous adsorbent for antibiotic removal from wastewater, with a large specific surface area , pore size, and pore volume . Under suitable adsorption conditions, such as pH of 5.5, temperature of 25 ℃, initial concentration of SMZ of 10 mg/L, and D-ZIF-8 dosage of 0.1 g/L, the adsorption of SMZ on D-ZIF-8 could reach equilibrium at 5 h, and the removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of SMZ reached to 95.0% and 95.0 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the D-ZIF-8 adsorbent also had good reusability. After 4 cycles, the adsorption capacity of SMZ on D-ZIF-8 remained at 93% of the initial adsorption capacity. In addition, the results of kinetic, adsorption isotherm , and thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption of SMZ on D-ZIF-8 belonged to multi-layer chemical adsorption and was a spontaneous exothermic reaction . This investigation could provide an efficient method for the removal of refractory antibiotics from livestock and poultry farm wastewater.

By adjusting the addition time of palladium nanoparticles, during the formation of ZIF-8, an efficient and facile method was proposed to control the palladium spatial distribution within ZIF-8 crystals. Characterizations reveal that the addition time can significantly affect the particle size of Pd@ZIF-8 and palladium spatial distribution. As the PVP-stabilized palladium nanoparticles are added at the early stage of the ZIF-8 formation, larger ZIF-8 crystals with completely embedded palladium nanoparticles can be obtained. Introducing the PVP-stabilized palladium nanoparticles later can lead to the formation of smaller ZIF-8 crystals with all the palladium nanoparticles on the outer surfaces of ZIF-8. The catalytic performance of Pd@ZIF-8 strongly depends on the palladium spatial distribution, and the Pd@ZIF-8 with completely embedded palladium nanoparticles can provide excellent product selectivity and better catalytic stability in the hydrogenation of alkenes.
