Surface enhancement Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful technique for detecting low-concentration analytes (chemicals and biochemicals). Herein, a high-performance SERS biosensing system has been created by using highly stable Ag@oxides nanoplates as enhancers. The Ag nanoplates were stabilized by coating a uniform ultrathin layer of oxides (SiO2 or TiO2) on the Ag surface through a simple sol–gel route. The thin oxide layer allows the plasmonic property of the original Ag nanoplates to be retained while preventing their contact with external etchants. The oxides provide an excellent platform for binding all kinds of molecules that contain a COOH group in addition to a SH group. We demonstrate that Ag@oxides have high performance with respect to the typical SERS molecule 4-ATP, which contains a typical SH group. Ag@oxides also can be directly employed for the SERS detection of amino acids. The highly stable Ag@oxides nanoplates are believed to hold great promise for fabricating a wide range of biosensors for the detection of many other biomolecules and may also find many interesting opportunities in the fields of biological labeling and imaging.

The polarization dependence plays a great impact on the SERS intensities for the surface plasmon coupling between nanoparticle aggregating. In this work, the SERS intensities collected from nanorice heterogeneous dimer or homogeneous dimer on Au, ITO and glass substrates exhibit strong polarization dependence. This result is further analyzed by the simulated surface charge distribution and electromagnetic enhancement distribution. Our data illustrate that SERS polarization dependence exhibits in all gaps in whole system, not only the gaps between nanorices but also gaps between nanorices and film, which could be important for the application of SERS as an ultrasensitive sensing technique.

Rapid and sensitive detection of Ag + in aquatic ecosystems is of great significance for public health and environmental security. In this report, a simple and feasible colorimetric method for the detection of Ag + at an ultralow concentration is developed. Bovine serum albumin stabilized gold nanoclusters (BSA@AuNCs) possess the peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H 2 O 2 . Once Ag + is introduced, Ag + selectively reacts with Au° through redox reaction, which induces an apparent inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of BSA@AuNCs. On the basis of this effect, a colorimetric Ag + sensor is established. The high specificity of the Ag–Au interaction provides excellent selectivity over the interfering metal ions. The lowest detectable concentration for Ag + is 0.204 μM. And this method could be applied for the rapid analysis of Ag + in lake water with satisfactory results. These advantages demonstrate that the proposed method is a promising candidate for the detection of Ag + in water samples.

Efficient solar vapor generation under normal one-sun illumination is widely expected to relieve water scarcity all over the world. Herein, we prepare a highly efficient solar vapor generator via the deposition of Ag nanoparticles on diatomite. Ag/diatomite combined with a filter paper, an airlaid paper and a polystyrene foam showed excellent vapor generation performance (the evaporation rate and efficiency (η) were ∼1.39 kg m−2 h−1 and ∼92.2%, respectively) under one-sun illumination at room temperature (25.0 °C). To the best of our knowledge, these values outperform most of the previously reported vapor generation performances and vapor generation efficiencies (if not all). Compared to the performance of Ag/SiO2 (η ≈ 66.2%) and commercial Ag nanoparticles (η ≈ 72.6%), the outstanding performance of Ag/diatomite was attributed to the synergy of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles and the confinement effect in micrometer size-diatomite. Considering the low cost ($10 per ton) and large-scale availability of diatomite as well as the easy construction of the vapor generation configuration that we proposed, this study provides prospects for practical applications towards relieving water scarcity.

We demonstrate a general strategy to design step by step the Ag nanoparticle-functionalized ZnO micro-flowers (Ag/ZnO composites). XRD patterns confirmed the presence of Ag nanoparticles in ZnO/Ag composites, and the SEM and TEM results further demonstrated that Ag nanoparticles were highly dispersed and anchored onto the surface of each ZnO nanosheets. By using the ZnO/Ag composites, the photodegradation of two herbicide derivatives, metamitron and metribuzin, were studied. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was ascribed to the fact that the Ag deposition could reduce the recombination probability of electron-hole pairs, and the photocatalytic mechanism were also investigated in this paper.

Plasmonic core@satellites nanostructures comprising strongly coupled Au-nanoparticles as building blocks have drawn a lot of attention because of the optical application, e.g. surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based signal amplification. However, little has been reported on the core@satellites structures related to Ag-nanoparticles and the SERS enhancement from a singular core@satellites assembling. Here, we show the DNA assisted assembly of core@satellites, consisting of Ag-nanocube core and small Au-nanosphere satellites. For each core@satellites unit, an Ag-nanocube as a core is assembled with randomly distributed Au-nanospheres as satellites. In this way, abundant hot spots are formed at the sharp edged Ag-nanocube and the nanoscaled gaps between the Ag-nanocube core and the Au-nanosphere satellite. Raman measurements, atomic force microscope correlated Raman measurements and finite element modeling demonstrate that the Raman enhancement factor of the singular Ag-nanocube@Au-nanospheres core@satellites can be up to 3.4 × 10 8 . The Ag-nanocube@Au-nanoparticles core@satellites with in-built electromagnetic hot-spots could be used as excellent SERS substrates for rapid ultrasensitive detection of organic pollutants in the environment. Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) templated by hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI) with different terminal groups and molecular weights had been developed as a special optical sensor for detecting p-nitrophenol (p-NP). When adding p-NP into Ag NCs, an obvious color change from pale yellow to deep yellow could be observed by naked eyes, accompanying with an apparent red-shift of absorption peak, and the reason was attributed to the formation of oxygen anion of p-NP based on the transfer of H + from p-NP to amine groups of PEI. The molecular weights of template would greatly affect the sensitivity of p-NP. Ag NCs capped by PEI terminated ethylenediamine (EDA) possessed better sensitivity than other Ag NCs, showing good linear range from 5 to 140 μM with the limit of detection as low as 1.28 μM. Most importantly, this present system displayed high selectivity toward p-NP even in the presence of other nitrophenols and nitrotoluenes . This reliable method had been successfully applied for the detection of p-NP in real water and soil samples.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) enwrapped in the biologically safe tannic acid (TA)/Fe3+ nanofilm are synthesized by an ultrafast, green, simple, and universal method. The physical antibacterial activity and photodynamic antibacterial therapy (PAT) efficacy of the TA/Fe3+/AgNPs nanofilm were investigated for the first time, which exhibited a strong physical antibacterial activity as well as great biocompatibility, through in vitro and in vivo studies. The results disclosed that this hybrid coating could possess high PAT capabilities upon irradiation under a visible light of 660 nm, which is longer than those of previously reported green and blue sensitization light, thus allowing deeper light penetration into biological tissues. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra proved that the PAT efficacy of the TA/Fe3+/AgNPs nanofilm was associated with the yields of singlet oxygen (1O2) under the irradiation of visible light (660 nm). A higher PAT efficiency of 100 and 94% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus could be achieved within 20 min of illumination under 660 nm visible light, whereas the innate physical antibacterial activity of AgNPs could endow the implants with long-term prevention of bacterial infection. The mechanism of PAT may be associated with the formation of oxidative stress and oxidative damage to key biomolecules (proteins and lipids) in bacteria. Our results reveal that the synergistic action of both PAT and physical action of AgNPs in this hybrid nanofilm is an effective way to inactivate bacteria, with minimal side effects.

Differing from graphene, the activated groups on the surface of layered two-dimensional titanium carbide (MXene) materials bestow superiority to self-assemble some novel MXene derivatives with intriguing chemical/physical properties. Here we first report a series of new MXene-Ag composites by directly mixing AgNO3 and alkalization-intercalated MXene (alk-MXene, Ti3C2(OH/ONa)2) solution containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at room temperature, in which an analogous urchin-shaped MXene-Ag0.9Ti0.1 bimetallic nanowire composite exhibits unexpected electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. The addition of PVP solution induces the formation of 5-fold nanotwin Ag seeds, which then grow into Ag/Ti (Ag0.9Ti0.1) bimetallic nanowires. The unique bimetallic nanowires favor a four-electron transfer process, and exhibit high current density and good stability by offering numerous oxygen adsorption sites and shortening the diffusion path of adsorbed oxygen. The results represent a new step for the electrocatalytic applications of MXene materials, and also motivate enthusiasm in the quest for new MXene derivations.

The design of self-sterilizing surfaces with favorable biocompatibility is acknowledged as an effective approach to deal with the bacterial infections of biomedical devices. In this study, we report an intriguing protocol for the large-scale fabrication of self-sterilizing and biocompatible surface film coatings by using polymer shielded silver nanoparticle loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT) nano-dispersions. To achieve the antibacterial coatings, the bioinspired positively charged and negatively charged AgNPs@oCNTs were alternately deposited onto substrates by spray-coating assisted layer-by-layer assembly. Then the bacterial inhibitory zones, optical density value monitoring, bacterial killing efficiency and adhesion were investigated; and all the results revealed that the AgNPs@oCNTs thin film coatings exhibited robust and long-term antibacterial activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria . Moreover, due to the shielding effects of polymer layers, the coatings showed extraordinary blood compatibility and limited toxicity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells. It is believed that the proposed large-scale fabrication of bactericidal, blood and cell compatible AgNPs@oCNT based thin film coatings will have great potential to forward novel operational pathogenic inhibition strategies to avoid undesired bacterial contaminations of biomedical implants or biological devices. Statement of Significance Bacterial infection of medical devices has been considered to be a world-wide clinical threat towards patients’ health. In this study, a bioinspired and biocompatible antibacterial coating was prepared via the spray-assisted layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The silver nanopartilces loaded oxidized carbon nanotube (AgNPs@oCNT), which were coated by functional polymers (chitosan and synthetic heparin mimicking polymers), were prepared via mussel inspired chemistry; and the spray-assisted assembly process allowed the fast construction on devices. Owing to the antibacterial efficiency of the loaded AgNPs, the coating showed robust bacterial killing activity and resistance towards bacterial adhesion . Moreover, since that the AgNPs were shielded by the polymers, the coating exhibited no clear toxicity at blood or cellular level. Benefiting from the universal and large-scale fabrication advancements of the spray assisted LbL coating; it is believed that the proposed strategy can be applied in designing many other kinds of self-sterilizing biomedical implants and devices.

An efficient sensor was developed for highly sensitive and selective determination of melamine based on Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) capped by hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI) molecules with different molecular weights. The fluorescence of the Ag NCs could be quenched by Hg2+ and recovered by melamine. The molecular weights of PEI had an appreciable effect on the sensitivity, and Ag NCs capped by PEI with a molecular weight of 600 were more sensitive; the linear range of melamine was from 0.1 to 30 μM with a detection limit 30 nM. Moreover, this Ag NCs–Hg2+ system displayed excellent selectivity over common interferences such as metal ions, amino acids, sugars and nitrogen-containing organic molecules. Benefiting from the high selectivity, good recoveries ranging from 96% to 101% were obtained in food samples, including milk, infant formula, and dog food. More importantly, Ag NC-doped agarose hydrogels were fabricated easily to construct a visual device for the detection of melamine in food samples.
