A novel silicate-supported nano zero-valent iron composite material (nZVI@SS) for the removal and stabilization of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in water/soil had been developed through the modification of low-grade oolitic iron ore (OI) by reduction, while refinery sludge (RS) as reductant, manganese carbonate (MC) as additive in this work. The As and Cd adsorption capacity of nZVI@SS reached 93.91 mg·g −1 and 265.81 mg·g −1 , respectively. Its specific surface area and pore volume increased by 19.28 m 2 ·g −1 and 0.24 cm 3 ·g −1 , respectively when compared with unmodified OI. In the actual soil leaching process, using 2 % nZVI@SS for 30 days, the leaching concentrations of As and Cd decreased by 87.86 % and 85.51 % respectively, while their bioavailable contents were reduced by 15.59 mg·kg −1 and 1.40 mg·kg −1 , correspondingly. The formation of chemical precipitates as Fe-As, Ca-As compounds, and Cd(OH) 2 was the main mechanism of their adsorption process . Therefore, HMs adsorbed by nZVI@SS were difficult to desorb, making it more suitable for passivation/stabilization of HMs in groundwater/soil. Furthermore, the production cost of nZVI@SS was approximately 50 $/T, below the average market value of comparable adsorption materials. This method made low-grade minerals into environmentally friendly materials with high added value, significantly reduced the environmental risk of HMs in water/soil, and provided a new approach for the development of sustainable environmentally friendly materials using hazardous waste RS as a resource.

Phosphorus-rich calcium-based bentonite (BM-PCB) was synthesized via a ball milling process and synergistically integrated with smooth vein (SV) to establish a coupled remediation system for Cd-contaminated soil. The combined application of BM-PCB and SV resulted in a 61.28% reduction in bioavailable Cd content, exhibiting 2.81- and 5.13-fold enhancements compared with those of BM-PCB (21.81%) and SV (11.94%) alone, respectively, confirming the existence of a strong synergistic passivation effect. BM-PCB enhanced the Cd enrichment capacity of SV by 2.83 times by promoting root development, subsequently increasing humic acid (HA) production by 33.33% by catalyzing the condensation reactions between phenolic compounds and amino acids following SV incorporation. The interaction between HA and BM-PCB enhanced Cd adsorption by improving the interlayer spacing, pore structure, functional group content, and charge characteristics of BM-PCB. Additionally, the beneficial microorganisms recruited by the coupling of BM-PCB and SV reduced Cd bioavailability as well as facilitated the decomposition and transformation of SV residues, thereby improving soil nutrients. This approach consequently increased the maize yield by 61.31% while concurrently reducing the Cd content in grains to comply with food safety standards. Life cycle assessment confirmed that the proposed BM-PCB+SV system represented a cost-effective and low-environmental-risk “three-in-one” strategy, simultaneously achieving Cd immobilization, soil fertility enhancement, and food security assurance.

Supramolecular chemistry of cyclodextrins (CDs) inclusion complexes is a hot research topic at present, but current studies often focus on the host-guest interaction between CDs and hydrophobic substances, while ignoring the self-assembly behavior of the host and guest during the inclusion process. Based on the spatial structures, six representative terpenes were selected in this study, and the stoichiometric ratio between terpenes and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) method. Meanwhile, the constructed inclusion complexes (ICs) were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance , X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope , etc. On this basis, the assembly process of β-CD and terpenes was investigated firstly by molecular simulation method, and the inclusion process between β-CD and terpenes was further studied in terms of the formation of individual ICs and ICs aggregates. Results showed that hydrophobic interaction and van der Waals force were the main driving forces of the reaction between terpenes and β-CD, and the formation of ICs, β-CD molecule aggregation, terpene aggregation, and ICs aggregation occurred simultaneously during the inclusion process of terpenes and β-CD. To sum up, this study may provide certain thinking and reference for the subsequent supramolecular chemical research on CDs.

Highly efficient electrocatalysts remain huge challenges in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Here, a Pt–Co3O4–CDs/C composite was fabricated as an anode electrocatalyst with low Pt content (12 wt%) by using carbon dots (CDs) and Co3O4 nanoparticles as building blocks. The Pt–Co3O4–CDs/C composite catalyst shows a significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity (1393.3 mA mg−1 Pt), durability (over 4000 s) and CO-poisoning tolerance. The superior catalytic activity should be attributed to the synergistic effect of CDs, Pt and Co3O4. Furthermore, the Pt–Co3O4–CDs/C catalyst was integrated into a single cell, which exhibits a maximum power density of 45.6 mW cm−2, 1.7 times the cell based on the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst.

Ligands plays an important role in the extraction procedures for the determination of cadmium in rice samples by using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). In the present study, comparative evaluation of 10 commercially available ligands for formation of Cd(II)-ligand complex and determination of cadmium in rice samples by ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (UADLLME) combined with FAAS was developed. Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) provided a high distribution coefficient as well as a good absorbance signal, therefore DDTC was used as a ligand in UADLLME. A low density and less toxic solvent, 1-heptanol, was used as the extraction solvent and ethanol was used as the disperser solvent. In addition, the experimental conditions of UADLLME were optimized in standard solution first and then applied in rice, such as the type and volume of extractant and dispersant, pH, extraction time, and temperature. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the detection limit (3σ) was 0.69 μg/L for Cd(II). The proposed method was applied for the determination of Cd(II) in three different rice samples (polished rice, brown rice, and glutinous rice), the recovery test was carried out, and the results ranged between 96.7 to 113.6%. The proposed method has the advantages of simplicity, low cost, and accurate and was successfully applied to analyze Cd(II) in rice. Keywords:ligands;rice;cadmium;dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction;flame atomic absorption spectrometry

By single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, five complexes, catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (1), catena-[(µ-2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-cadmium(II)] (2), catena-[hepta(µ-2,2-bis(4carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane)-diaqua-bis(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3-benzothiazole)-tri-manganes(II)] (3), catena-[(µ-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)-1,3benzothiazole)copper(II)] (4) and catena-[(µ-3-nitrobenzene-1,2-dicarboxylato)-(2-(pyidin-2-yl)1,3-benzothiazole)-aqua-zinc(II)] (5), were characterized in this research. In these five complexes, H2hfipbb = 2,2-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, H4btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H2NPTA = 3-nitrophthalic acid and bpt = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole). Complexes 1 and 2 occur in the monoclinic system with space group C2/c, 4 and 5 occur in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c, and 3 occurs in the triclinic system with space group P-1. The interaction between CT-DNA (calf thymus DNA) and those complexes was examined using UV spectroscopic analysis, fluorescent spectroscopic analysis, circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and viscosity analysis. This research reveals that those complexes have strong ability to interact with DNA, and they all bind to DNA in an intercalation mode, thus affecting the structure of DNA. This binding mode can arise from the interaction between the benzothiazole metal complexes and DNA. Hence, we hope to provide some scientific research bases for studying benzothiazole complexes and designing new thiazole anticancer drugs.

The high performance detection of heavy metal ions in crucial water sources is of great significance to protect human health and life safety. Herein, a novel ratiometric detection system towards trace Cd(II) and Pb(II) has been established by utilizing in-situ bismuth modified nitrogen rich porous carbon/boron doped diamond (Bi/NC/BDD) composite electrode. Benefiting from the interconnected hierarchical micro/mesoporous structure and N-embedded partially graphitized carbon matrix of NC modifier, as well as the formation of Bi-alloy, an excellent sensitivity with low limit of detection (LOD, 0.24 μg L −1 for Cd(II) and 0.37 μg L −1 for Pb(II)) is realized. Moreover, the built-in normalization function of Bi(III) reference signal effectively improves the reliability and reproducibility of detection results. This work provides an important guidance for the development of quality environmental monitoring electrodes.

In the present study, Neodymium (Nd), Cadmium (Cd), and the various molar ratios of Nd: Cd doped copper oxide nanocomposites (CuO NCs) were prepared by the co-precipitation method. The as-synthesized Nd, Cd, and Nd:Cd doped CuO NCs [Cu 1-x + y Nd x Cd y O, (x:y = 0.006:0.00, 0.00:0.006, 0.005:0.001, 0.004:0.002, 0.003:0.003, M)] were characterized through various instrumentation techniques such as TGA , UV–Vis–NIR, FTIR, Raman, FL, XRD , ZP , FE-SEM with EDAX elemental mapping, HR-TEM and XPS analyses. Further, the antibacterial activity of doped CuO NCs was tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . An equal molar ratio of Nd and Cd doped CuO NCs showed excellent antibacterial activity mainly due to the synergistic effect of sufficient Nd 3+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ ions releasing ability . Interestingly, the doping effect enhances surface defects and decreases the ability to scavenge free radicals compared to pure CuO nanomaterials . At the same time, the cytotoxicity of NCs was evaluated on the human lung epithelial L132 cell line. Evidently, 75 μg/ml concentration of Nd:Cd doped CuO NCs samples shows 80% viability, which confirms their negligible cytotoxic effect. The Nd:Cd doped CuO NCs (94:3:3) had a high aspect ratio shape, remarkable ion-releasing ability, and biocompatibility while being thermally stable. Because of these qualities, they are well suited for treating bacterial infections in the biomedical area.

The equilibrium potentials of Me(III)/Me (Me = Dy, U) couples and the double Me–Ga, Me–Cd alloys vs. Cl − /Cl 2 reference electrode were measured at the temperature range 673–973 K in molten LiCl–KCl–CsCl eutectic by open-circuit potentiometry. The apparent standard potential and the base thermodynamic properties of alloys were determined. Separation factor for Dy/U couple was calculated on gallium and cadmium electrodes. In addition, it was found that the application of gallium electrodes has a significant advantage over cadmium electrodes in the process of electrochemical separation of uranium and dysprosium.

The preparation of the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites not only overcame the problem of easy agglomeration of nanoparticles, but also provided rich functional groups, large specific surface areas and good stability, achieving the efficient sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solution. The maximum sorption capacities of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) attained from the Langmuir model were 218.788, 383.420 and 148.939 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA were strongly affected by pH, but not by ionic strength, showing good resistance to salt interference. The main sorption mechanism of the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA towards Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) was the strong surface complexation of the functional groups on the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA with Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II). Moreover, the radii of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions and their complexation strength with the MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA jointly determined the order of the competitive sorption capacities as Cu(II) > Cd(II) > Ni(II). Given the above analyses, the maple leaf-like MnO 2 –SiO 2 @PDA biomimetic composites have excellent application prospects in practical wastewater treatment.

Developing water-soluble fluorescent probes has important scientific and practical significance. In this work, coumarin derivatives bearing -OH were obtained through the classical Knoevenagel reaction firstly. Secondly, -C C- on allyl bromide was introduced into coumarin by Williamson ether formation method. Thirdly, hydrazine hydrate was added to the coumarin derivatives, a polymerizable small molecular coumarin fluorophore containing probe was obtained successfully. And, the -COOH on di-thioester underwent an esterification reaction with –OH groups on β-cyclodextrin(β-CD) to prepare oligomer based reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT) reagents. Finally, three copolymer probes β-CD-PMAA-Coumarin, β-CD-PMAm-Coumarin, and β-CD-PHEMA-Coumarin were prepared via RAFT polymerization , in which C C-coumarin was used as the functional monomer and methacrylamide(MAm)/methacrylic acid (MAA)/hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as the main monomers. The MALDI-TOF mass tests showed that the macromolecular level probes were successfully prepared. These polymer probes have molecular weights up to 5.4 kDa and have narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI≤1.31). With the assistance of water-soluble long-chained PMAm/PMAA/PHEMA and hydrophilic β-CD, the coumarin containing macromolecular fluorescent probes could be dissolved in water readily. These water soluble polymer fluorescent probes could recognize Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ ions with high sensitivity. The detection limit of Fe 3+ could be as low as 0.34 μM. This study successfully developed a promising technique for producing highly selective, fully water-soluble fluorescent macromolecular probes.

To enhance Pb(II) and Cd(II) elimination, new composites (FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH) were fabricated by loading biochar with Fe-Ni nanoparticles and functionalizing biochar by amination/hydroxylation in the study. The maximum sorption capacities of both adsorbents toward Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 217.09/209.36 mg/g and 242.15/229.52 mg/g, respectively, which were 4.30–4.79 times higher than those of the raw biochar. The significantly enhanced adsorption capacity could be attributed to the increased O/N-containing groups and Fe-Ni nanoparticles on the adsorbent surface. The introduction of Fe-Ni nanoparticles and O/N-containing groups promoted the complexation and electrostatic interactions and made them playing major roles in the adsorption. Besides, ions exchange and physical adsorption played non-negligible roles in the adsorption process. Additionally, the both adsorbents exhibited favorable anti-interference ability and cycling stability. Taken together, the study revealed that the new biochar composites of FeNi-RSN-(OH)(NH 2 ) and FeNi-RSN-OH could be used as a reusable magnetic adsorbents with promising prospect in current practice for the effective remediation of heavy metals-bearing wastewater. The study not only provided a feasible design, synthesis and optimization strategy of biochar for heavy metals contaminants removal, but also realized the sustainable utilization of waste.
