In this work, composite materials (Cu-Cu 2 O/MO 2 , M = Mo and W) and their thermally treated form were prepared and characterized by using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UPS) and cyclic voltammetry. Their catalytic performance on aerobic oxidation of various alcohols under mild conditions was investigated with N-methylimidazole (NMI) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as the co-catalysts. Of the materials, the thermally treated MoO 2 -based material exhibited the best performance and durability. Compared to Cu-Cu 2 O, the involvement of MO 2 significantly enhances the catalytic activity on the oxidation. Our results suggest that the presence of MO 2 not only raises the energy level of VBM of Cu 2 O which is beneficial to O 2 activation and generates internal electric field pointing to the catalytic center (Cu 2 O) which would accelerate the electron transfer from the substrate to the catalyst through forming heterojunction with both Cu and MO 2 , but also disperses the catalytic center. Further, the Lewis acidity of MO 2 with appropriate strength can bring the substrate closer to the catalytic center via adsorption. But appropriate acidity is essential as easy on–off adsorption is desired in the catalysis. Thermal treatment generates oxidation state VI species of stronger acidity which offsets the effect of the raised VBM energy level.

l -cysteine (L-Cys) plays an important role in human health as well as in the biological environment. Here, a simple physical mixing technique was used to create the p-n heterojunction by homogeneously immobilizing cuprous oxide/copper@microporous carbon (Cu 2 O/Cu@mC) on the surface of a sheet of g-C 3 N 4 (CNS). Among them, the porous structure of Cu 2 O/Cu@mC after heat treatment is favorable for charge storage. Meanwhile, the carbon element in Cu 2 O/Cu@mC acts as a photosensitizer and electron mediator to extend visible light absorption. Compared with bulk g-C 3 N 4 (CNB), the sheet-like structure and high specific surface area of CNS can be used as a carrier for the binding of Cu 2 O/Cu@mC with L-Cys. Based on the interaction between L-Cys and Cu 2 O/Cu@mC through the formation of Cu–S bonds, Cu 2 O/Cu@mC/CNS was proposed as a light-driven enzyme-free photoelectrochemical sensor for the detection of L-Cys. In the best case, the Cu 2 O/Cu@mC/GCE sensor has a low limit of detection of 1.26 × 10 −9 M for L-Cys and a wide linear range (1.0 × 10 −8 M − 4.0 × 10 −6 M). The repeatability, reproducibility, stability, selectivity and specificity of the sensor were satisfactory. In addition, the potential applicability of the proposed photoelectrochemical sensor was evaluated in tap water and human serum.

A novel hybrid Cu 2 O@TiO 2 - g -zinc-tetraamino-phthalocyanine (CT- g -ZnTAPc) hollow sphere as “ day-night ” photocatalyst with spatially separated structures was prepared successfully. Firstly, three layers SiO 2 @Cu 2 O@TiO 2 (SCT) was synthesized with core–shell structure. Then zinc-tetraamino-phthalocyanine (ZnTAPc) immobilized on the surface of maleic anhydride (MAH) modified SCT with amide linkages. Finally, hollow CT- g -ZnTAPc spheres were obtained by NaOH etching. In this structure, ZnTAPc was grafted on the outer surface of TiO 2 as the main visible light absorber, while the inner surface was adhered with Cu 2 O as a secondary absorption of the scattered light. Both of Cu 2 O and ZnTAPc sensitized TiO 2 synergistically to broaden light response from ultraviolet to visible region and enhance photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, TiO 2 - g -ZnTAPc and Cu 2 O@TiO 2 p–n heterojunctions based on the close match band structures, so they were expected to facilitate electron-hole separation more effectively. Moreover, TiO 2 would capture electrons from Cu 2 O and ZnTAPc under visible light and delayed releasing electrons without illumination to perform photocatalyzing in dark as “ day-night ” photocatalysts. K 2 Cr 2 O 7 (Cr (VI)), Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC•HCl) were employed as model pollutants as well as Cr (VI)-RhB coexistence system. Almost 95.2% of Cr (VI) could be reduced by CT- g -ZnTAPc, which was about 1.57 times of Cu 2 O@TiO 2 and 1.64 times of TiO 2 - g -ZnTAPc. Furthermore, CT- g -ZnTAPc had a high specific surface area (219.3 m 2 /g) as an efficient pollutant adsorbent, and was investigated by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The maximum quantity of Cr (VI) adsorbed by CT- g -ZnTAPc was 48.8 mg/g. As a result, CT- g -ZnTAPc would be a potential effective and energy-saving multifunctional photocatalyst.

The photo-Fenton method presents a promising approach for wastewater treatment, yet it faces several significant challenges, including the continuous supply of H 2 O 2 , slow mass transfer rates and a limited operational pH range. In this context, we describe the successful preparation of a novel catalyst: n-p type graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets engineered with nitrogen vacancies and decorated with Cu 2 O-T, which is characterized by controllable crystal planes. This photo-self-Fenton-like catalyst is designed for the in-situ production and activation of H 2 O 2 . The optimized catalyst, CNC-20, demonstrates remarkable efficiency in degrading various organic pollutants, showcasing high cyclic stability and wide applicability. Notably, CNC-20 achieves a degradation rate of 98.8% for tetracycline hydrochloride within 60 min, with a reaction rate constant 4.2 times greater than that of pristine carbon nitride. Characterization studies illustrate that the construction of ultrathin carbon nitride nanosheets featuring nitrogen vacancies, combined with the co-exposure of Cu 2 O-T crystalline planes (111) and (100), significantly enhances carrier separation efficiency, thereby facilitating effective H 2 O 2 generation. Furthermore, Cu 2 O-T plays a crucial role in the direct capture of in-situ generated H 2 O 2 , rapidly activating it to generate abundant ·OH, which effectively mitigates the issue of slow mass transfer associated with H 2 O 2 . This study presents a novel approach integrating in-situ H 2 O 2 generation and activation, effectively overcoming the inherent limitations of traditional photo-Fenton reactions and providing a promising strategy for pollutant degradation in wastewater treatment systems.

Plastics are ubiquitous in human life and pose certain hazards to the environment and human body. The increasing amount of CO 2 in the atmosphere will lead to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, it is urgent to treat microplastic waste and CO 2 by using environmentally friendly and efficient technologies. In this work, we developed an efficient photoelectrocatalytic system composed of Ni single atoms (Ni SAs) supported by P, N-doped amorphous NiFe 2 O 4 (Ni SAs/A-P-N-NFO) as anode and Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) supported by CuO/Cu 2 O nanocubes (Ag NPs@CuO/Cu 2 O NCs) as cathode for microplastic oxidation and CO 2 reduction. The Ni SAs/A-P-N-NFO was synthesized by calcination-H 2 reduction method, and it achieved a Faraday efficiency of 93% for the oxidation reaction of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) solution under AM 1.5 G light. As a photocathode, the synthesized Ag NPs@CuO/Cu 2 O NCs was utilized to reduce CO 2 to ethylene and CO at 1.5 V vs . RHE with selectivity of 42% and 55%, respectively. This work shows that the photoelectrocatalysis, as an environmentally friendly technology, is a feasible strategy for reducing the environmental and biological hazards of light plastics, as well as for efficient CO 2 reduction.

In this work, three materials of Cu-Cu 2 O/rGO-NH 2 -4.4/1, -1/1 and -1/10.4, in which the numeric suffices denote the ratio of Cu/Cu 2 O in the materials, were described and characterized using various analytical techniques including FTIR, XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. To probe the band structures of these materials, UPS, cyclic voltammetry, and UV–vis reflection spectroscopy were also employed. The formation of heterojunctions in the ternary materials tune their band structures by raising the energy level of valence band maximums (VBMs), inducing an internal electric field (IEF) and an electron accumulation layer (EAL) within the materials. Augment of copper content in the materials can enhance the energy level rising. The coordination of N-methylimidazole (NMI) with Cu 2 O of the materials can also contribute to raising the energy level. The changes in these electronic properties bring about a synergistic effect in selective aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols via improving O 2 activation and facilitation of electron transfer between the catalyst and the reactants due to the rising of the energy level of VBM and the formation of IEF.
