Defect-engineered Mn–Fe2O3 catalysts enable heterogeneous FeIV=O formation for enhanced Fe(VI)/H2O2 oxidation of organic pollutants

Zhengming He,Cong Li,Jingzhen Su,Kai Zhang,Jiaxue zhu,Ren Cai,Yunshu Zhang,Jieming Yuan,Xiaohong Guan

Iron-based catalysts are generally used to activate oxidizing species, such as hydrogen peroxide by increasing homogeneous active substances like free radicals, to promote the degradation of organic matter. However, less attention has been paid to the reactions on the surface or the generation of heterogeneous metal-oxo species. Herein, oxygen vacancies (Vo) were introduced into Fe oxides by a calcination-induced hetero-atom doping modification. The characteristic peak of the heterogeneous hypervalent iron-oxo [≡Fe IV =O] species in the UV–Vis spectrum at 371 nm was observed. In the context of electrochemical experiment, Vo-rich Mn-Fe 2 O 3 significantly enhanced the electron conduction of sulfamethoxazole and H 2 O 2 , while simultaneously inhibiting the self-decomposition of potassium ferrate (Fe(VI)). Regarding the H 2 O 2 generated during the self-decomposition process of Fe(VI), Vo-rich Mn-Fe 2 O 3 can accelerate the degradation of sulfamethoxazole, increasing the reaction rate to 0.1081 min −1 (with a 30.05 % improvement in removal efficiency). Density functional theory calculations indicate that Vo leads to an enhanced capture of O atoms by the low-coordinated Fe atoms, promoting the anchoring of H 2 O 2 and the formation of the active ≡Fe IV =O with a higher spin state. This work proposes heterogeneous reactive species on the surface of metal oxidase, constructing Vo as the O atom capture sites in iron-based oxides to facilitate the formation of ≡Fe IV =O and the degradation of organic compounds.

Resource utilization of iron ore concentrate leachate: Constructing polyacrylonitrile-coated Fe2O3 core-shell structures for optimized lithium storage performance

Yu Song,Weiya Zhang,Yin Li,Yaochun Yao,Zhunqin Dong,Lingling Yuan

Iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) has emerged as a potential anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), attributed to its considerable theoretical capacity and natural abundance. Nevertheless, its practical application is hindered by poor electrical conductivity and severe volume changes during cycling, which lead to rapid capacity fading and poor rate performance. This study presents a sustainable strategy for synthesizing high-performance Fe 2 O 3 -based anodes using iron ore leachate. Fe 2 O 3 @PAN core-shell composites are successfully fabricated via chemical precipitation–calcination, followed by in-situ polyacrylonitrile (PAN) coating and thermal cyclization. Structural characterization confirmed the formation of a uniform cyclized PAN shell that enhances both mechanical resilience and conductivity. Among the synthesized composites, Fe 2 O 3 @PAN-9 demonstrated the most balanced performance, delivering a high reversible capacity of 941.38 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and maintaining 619.12 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 1 A g −1 . Electrochemical analyses, including EIS, GITT, and pseudocapacitive behavior studies, revealed improved charge transfer kinetics, enhanced lithium-ion diffusion, and a dominant pseudocapacitive contribution in the Fe 2 O 3 @PAN composites. Post-cycling SEM confirmed the structural integrity of Fe 2 O 3 @PAN-9, attributed to optimal cyclization time that balances flexibility and conductivity of the PAN shell. This work not only offers an effective strategy for resource-efficient synthesis of Fe 2 O 3 -based anodes but also provides a scalable surface engineering route to enhance the electrochemical performance of transition metal oxide anodes for high-energy LIBs.

Amplifying photo-Fenton redox synergy in Fe2O3/CeO2 heterostructured nanotubes for efficient blue-LED-activated degradation at pH 5

Zhengjiang Liu,Junjie Tang,Jiani Wu,Timur Borjigin,Bing Bai,Yaqiong Wang,Hedong Huang

Herein, we report a Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 porous nanotube as a high-performance heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like catalyst, featuring a stable Fe-O-Ce heterojunction confirmed by XPS and TEM. This structural design, coupled with enhanced visible-light absorption induced by Fe 2 O 3 modification on CeO 2 , constitutes its core structural innovation. Under 440 nm blue LED irradiation and at pH 5, this composite achieves complete degradation of 80 mg/L methyl orange within 60 min with 0.5 mL of 15 % H 2 O 2 , exhibiting remarkable catalytic efficiency. Radical trapping experiments identify h + and OH as dominant active species, with O 2 − playing a secondary role. Notably, the catalyst maintains excellent performance after 4 cycles, highlighting its superior stability. Furthermore, CeO 2 facilitates electron transfer from H 2 O 2 to Fe 3+ , accelerating the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycle. This accelerated cycle not only enhances H 2 O 2 activation and OH generation but also expands the pH operating range-overcoming the narrow pH limitation of traditional Fenton systems. Band analysis across the Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 heterojunction further clarifies the charge separation and transfer pathway underlying this enhanced catalytic behavior. With its exceptional co-catalytic activity, broad pH adaptability, and high stability, Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 porous nanotubes demonstrate great practical potential for real wastewater treatment. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for wastewater decontamination but also offers new insights into designing heterojunction-based catalysts for environmental remediation.

Interfacial heterojunction-engineered magnetic alpha-Fe2O3@NiFe LDH@biotemplate catalyst for heterogeneous photocatalytic activated persulfate removal of organic pollutants

Xingjian Dai,Dachong Gu,Quan Zhou,Xinfang Zhang,Chenzhi Zhang,Tao Sun,Xiaoying Liu,Dan Song,Lihong Gao,Jishu Zheng,Jinsong Rao,Yuxin Zhang

The integration of multiple degradation pathways in a single catalyst has been proposed as a promising strategy for environmental remediation. The successful transition process from MnO 2 to alpha-Fe 2 O 3 is used to prepare 1D/2D/3D alpha-Fe 2 O 3 @NiFe LDH@diatomite (FENFD) nanocomposite for improving conversion efficiency during pollutant degradation. The effects of initial pH, pollutant concentration, persulfate (PS) dosage, and catalyst dosage on the degradation rate were systematically investigated. FENFD demonstrated favorable PS activation performance and high degradation efficiency for Rhodamine B , azo dyes , and tetracycline over a broad pH range. Comparative experiments with quenching catalytically active radicals and analysis of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal that the sulfate radical generated by PS photocatalytic activation has a synergistic effect with superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical to degrade pollutants. Biotemplate-diatomite effectively achieves the dispersion of magnetic nano Fe 2 O 3 and LDH and increases light utilization. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the in situ grow Fe 2 O 3 @NiFe LDH heterojunctions can efficiently transform the interface band structure to inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The stability and reusability of the magnetic nanocomposites were also evaluated, and the degradation efficiency reached 96.4% even after five cycles, which provides new insight into designing single catalysts with different degradation mechanisms.

In situ growth of α-Fe2O3@Co3O4 core–shell wormlike nanoarrays for a highly efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation reaction

Chunmei Li,Zhihui Chen,Weiyong Yuan,Qing-Hua Xu,Chang Ming Li

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting represents a promising strategy to convert solar energy into chemical energy in the form of hydrogen, but its performance is severely limited by the sluggish water oxidation reaction. Herein, for the first time, we report the direct assembly of an ultrathin, uniform, and dense layer of Co3O4 on wormlike nanostructured hematite (WN-α-Fe2O3) to form a large-area and high-density WN-α-Fe2O3@Co3O4 core–shell nanoarray via in situ hydrothermal growth followed by calcination, in which the electrostatic force between WN-α-Fe2O3 and the reactants, pH- and temperature-controlled structures of WN-α-Fe2O3, and ultralow nucleation rate of Co3O4 precursors all play critical roles. The obtained heteronanostructure array shows a photocurrent density of 3.48 mA cm−2, which is 4.05 times higher than that of pristine WN-α-Fe2O3 (0.86 mA cm−2), an onset potential of ∼0.62 V, 60 mV lower than that of α-Fe2O3 (∼0.68 V), and a photoconversion efficiency of 0.55%, 3.93 times higher than that of WN-α-Fe2O3 (0.14%). This is among the highest performances reported for Fe2O3-based photoanodes for water splitting. It is discovered that the Co3O4 shells can significantly enhance the charge separation, accelerate the charge transport and transfer, and reduce the charge transfer resistance from the photoelectrode to the electrolyte for a fast water oxidation reaction, thereby greatly promoting the PEC water oxidation performance of pristine WN-α-Fe2O3. This work not only creates a novel low-cost and Earth-abundant WN-α-Fe2O3@Co3O4 photoelectrode with superior PEC water oxidation performance and provides scientific insights into the enhancement mechanism, but also offers a general strategy for the in situ growth of water oxidation catalysts on various photoelectrodes with 3-D complex geometries for PEC water splitting.

Pushing the Limits of Energy Performance in Micron-Sized Thermite: Core–Shell Assembled Liquid Metal-Modified Al@Fe2O3 Thermites

An Chen,Bo Wu,XiaoDong Li,Jinpeng Shen,Lu Tian,Yong Zhou,Chonghua Pei

Thermites are a class of significant energetic materials widely used in aerospace propulsion, explosion, pyrotechnics, thermal batteries, and power generation. Although nanothermites exhibit fast reaction rates and high energy density, micron-sized thermites remain of practical importance over nanothermites due to their low electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity, lower cost, and smaller dead mass. Herein, we develop micron-sized core–shell gallium-based liquid metal-modified Al@Fe2O3 (GLM-Al@Fe2O3), which exhibits high energy density and low laser ignition energy. At an equivalence ratio of 1.3, the differential scanning calorimetry results show that the total heat release of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 reaches 2555 J·g–1, which is much higher than that of the control sample (1424 J·g–1) prepared by a similar process. The density of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 (φ = 1.3) was characterized by a gas pycnometer analyzer, and its volumetric energy density could reach 9.96 kJ·cm–3. Laser-ignited combustion performance of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 was markedly reinforced in terms of the decreased ignition energy. Additionally, the ESD ignition threshold of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 is higher than 1 J, which revealed that the as-prepared GLM-Al@Fe2O3 was insensitive to electrostatic discharge. The facile and efficient strategy in this work provides inspiration to enhance the energy output performance and maintain the ESD safety of micron-sized thermites, which could show great potential in various civilian and military applications.

Controllable synthesis and coating-thickness-dependent electrochemical properties of mesoporous carbon-coated α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles for lithium-ion batteries

Bao-Shui Wu,Peng Wang,Shu-Hua Teng

Mesoporous carbon-coated iron oxide (α-Fe 2 O 3 @C) nanoparticles were hydrothermally synthesized by using α-Fe 2 O 3 nanospheres (ca. 50 nm) as the cores and resorcinol as the carbon source of the shells. The formation of the mesoporous carbon coatings was confirmed by means of SEM, TEM , FT-IR, TG, XPS and BET measurements. Moreover, the coating thickness was easily adjusted to be 4, 7 and 10 nm by changing the amount of resorcinol. When used as the anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the α-Fe 2 O 3 @C nanoparticles exhibited significantly improved electrochemical properties as compared to pure α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. With the increase of the coating thickness, the α-Fe 2 O 3 @C electrodes presented an initial increase and subsequent decrease in their cycling stability and rate performance. Especially, the α-Fe 2 O 3 @C-7 nanoparticles displayed a high reversible capacity of 1223 mA h/g at 1 A/g, a good cycling stability retaining 1093 mA h/g at 1 A/g after 100 cycles as well as a remarkable rate performance of 570 mA h/g at 5 A/g. The quantitative kinetic analysis revealed that 58 % of the charge storage was contributed by the capacitive process at 0.5 mV/s. The well-defined core-shell structure and superior electrochemical performance of the α-Fe 2 O 3 @C-7 nanoparticles will make them a promising anode for LIBs.

Fiber-optic Michelson interferometer based on α-Fe2O3/ZrO2 sensing membrane and its application in trace fluoride-ion detection

Zizheng Yue,Wenlin Feng

In this work, a fiber-optic fluoride-ion-detection Michelson interferometer based on the thin-core fiber (TCF) and no-core fiber (NCF) coated with α-Fe 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 sensing film is proposed and presented. The single-mode fiber (SMF) is spliced with the TCF and NCF in turn, and a waist-enlarged taper is spliced between them. Then, a silver film is plated on the end face of NCF to enhance the reflection. After the absorption of fluoride ion by the sensing film, the effective refractive index (RI) of the coated cladding will change, which leads to the regular red shift of the interference dip with the increasing fluoride-ion concentration. Thus, the fluoride-ion concentrations can be determined according to the corresponding dip wavelength shifts. The results show that the sensor has an excellent linear response ( R 2 = 0.995) with good sensitivity (8.970 nm/ppm) when the fluoride-ion concentration is in the range of 0–1.5 ppm. The response time is about 15 s. The sensor has the advantage of good selectivity, good temperature and pH stabilities, and can be applied to detect fluoride ion effectively.

MOF-derived (MoS2, γ-Fe2O3)/graphene Z-scheme photocatalysts with excellent activity for oxygen evolution under visible light irradiation

Ang Li,Yuxiang Liu,Xuejun Xu,Yuanyuan Zhang,Zhichun Si,Xiaodong Wu,Rui Ran,Duan Weng

Constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions is considered as an effective strategy to obtain catalysts of high efficiency in electron–hole separation in photocatalysis. Unfortunately, suitable heterojunctions are difficult to fabricate because the direct interaction between two semiconductors may lead to unpredictable negative effects such as electron scattering or electron trapping due to the existence of defects which causes the formation of new substances. Furthermore, the van der Waals contact between two semiconductors also results in bad electron diffusion. In this work, a MOF-derived carbon material as a Z-scheme photocatalyst was synthesized via one-step thermal treatment of MoS2 dots @Fe-MOF (MIL-101). Under visible light irradiation, the well-constructed Z-scheme (MoS2, γ-Fe2O3)/graphene photocatalyst shows 2-fold photocatalytic oxygen evolution activity (4400 μmol g−1 h−1) compared to that of γ-Fe2O3/graphene (2053 μmol g−1 h−1). Based on ultraviolet photoelectron spectrometry (UPS), Mott–Schottky plot, photocurrent and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) results, the photo-induced electrons from the conduction band of γ-Fe2O3 could transport quickly to the valence band of MoS2 via highly conductive graphene as an electron transport channel, which could significantly enhance the electron–hole separation efficiency as well as photocatalytic performance.

A γ-Fe2O3 Embedded In Situ Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Composites for Efficient Bisphenol A Removal: Adsorption Behavior and Property Study

Yunxiang Luo,Tongtong Zhang,Yang Qin,Fujie Zhao,Hongchen Wang,Guohua Liu,Lu Qi

Bisphenol A (BPA), an emerging wastewater contaminant, poses significant ecological risks even in trace concentrations, necessitating advanced removal strategies. In this study, a novel γ-Fe2O3-embedded nitrogen-doped polydopamine-derived carbon composite adsorbent (Fe-PC) was synthesized using polydopamine as a self-nitrogen-doped carbon precursor rather than a conventional shell material. The Fe-PC adsorbent exhibited a high BPA adsorption capacity of 423.86 mg g–1 and rapid equilibrium within 120 min. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.999), while equilibrium data aligned with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer chemisorption is the dominant mechanism. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed that the process is spontaneous and endothermic. Mechanistic investigations revealed that γ-Fe2O3 introduces abundant active sites, enabling synergistic adsorption via chemical bonding, π–π interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and Fe3+ coordination with BPA hydroxyl groups. Combining high adsorption capacity, rapid kinetics, and stability, Fe-PC offers a promising strategy for efficiently removal of emerging contaminants from water.

α-Fe2O3-regulated reactive free radicals generation in NaClO oxidation system for efficient remediation of PAHs-contaminated industrial site soil

Xiaojun Hu,Yufeng Chen,Ziyao Mi,Bo Wang,Yanyan Du,Xinyu Wang,Jingxian Jiang

The remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soil has attracted widespread attention these years, ascribed to PAHs are environmental persistent, carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, posing serious threats to human beings and ecosystem. Existing advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for PAHs remediation are always constrained by expensive cost, strong operating conditions dependence and incomplete decomposition. To overcome these limitations, this study proposed an innovative and effective α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO catalytic oxidation system to realize reinforced PAHs degradation in industrial site soil. Under the determined optimal mass ratio of α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO at 24:1, the combined system demonstrated an increase in PAHs degradation efficiency by 17.9% and 57.3% in comparison with NaClO or α-Fe 2 O 3 employed individually, with the NaClO concentration fixing at 2000 mg/L and initial solution pH setting at 5. The primary reactive free radicals responsible for PAHs degradation were identified as •OH and O 2 · − , while ClO · and Cl 2 · − were evidenced to make contributions as well. In addition, direct electron transfer between α-Fe 2 O 3 and PAHs also participated in PAHs oxidation. Phytotoxicity tests and T.E.S.T. results elucidated the alleviated toxicity of soil remediated by the α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO system, further manifesting the practical applicability of this remediation strategy. This research highlighted the great potential of α-Fe 2 O 3 /NaClO catalytic oxidation system in future remediation of PAHs-contaminated soil.
