Photocatalytic persulfate (PS) activation holds promise for addressing antibiotic contamination and pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater, yet its efficiency is limited by rapid charge recombination in conventional photocatalysts. Herein, we engineered a Ti 3 C 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction through controlled thermal exfoliation. The introduced Ti 3 C 2 acts as an electron-conducting bridge to suppress charge recombination while simultaneously serving as a PS activation site. Under visible light, the optimized heterojunction achieved complete inactivation of E. coli within 20 min and 99.3 % viability reduction of S. aureus within 30 min. It also demonstrated enhanced photocatalytic removal efficiencies of 98.0 % for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and 97.7 % for sulfadiazine (SD) within 20 min, corresponding to 9.3-fold and 2.0-fold improvements over pristine g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the synergistic interplay between the C N charge transfer bridges in the Ti 3 C 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction and the Ti 3 C 2 -mediated electron shuttling through ≡Ti(III)/≡Ti(IV) redox cycles facilitate PS activation and drives the continuous generation of reactive species ( 1 O₂, ·O₂ − , and h + ). Transcriptomic analysis further identified disrupted biosynthesis pathways and compromised membrane integrity as key contributors to bacterial inactivation. This study provides theoretical insights for the rational design of efficient MXene-based heterojunction catalysts for photo-assisted activation of PS to control pathogenic microorganisms and remove antibiotics.

The application of promising g-C 3 N 4 has been limited by poor photogenerated electron-hole separation and limited absorption for visible light. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a typical antibiotic drug that is used worldwide and hard to be disposed through conventional wastewater treatment methods. Herein, S-scheme Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction was successfully prepared via a facile one-step sintering method and applied to photodegrade SMX under visible light irradiation. The integration of Fe 2 O 3 and g-C 3 N 4 shows superior charge separation and light absorption ability. As a result, the removal efficiency of 11 wt% Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 reaches to 99.2% within 30 min, which is visibly higher than 59.5% of pure g-C 3 N 4 . ·O 2 − and ·OH are demonstrated to be the predominant active species for SMX photodegradation, and the possible degradation pathway is also proposed based on electronic band structure of Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction. This study presents a facile construction of g-C 3 N 4 based S-scheme photocatalyst and offers an environmentally friendly approach to effectively remove organic pollutants using renewable solar energy.

Tin/phosphide (Sn/P) based alloys have been regarded as one of the promising anodes for advanced sodium-ion batteries due to their advantages of low-cost and proper redox potentials to Na/Na + . However, because of the serious volume expansion in the Na storage process, Sn/P-based materials generally suffer from rapid capacity decay during the cycle. Herein, a novel tin/phosphorus@graphite-carbon nanotubes (Sn/P@G-CNTs) composite was synthesized via a rational high-energy ball milling (HEBM) method. SEM and TEM results reveal that the separated Sn/P species are homogeneously dispersed in the G-CNTs matrix, which can accommodate large volume expansion and generate good electrical contact during cycle. As a result, the fabricated Sn/P@G-CNTs electrode exhibits a high reversible capacity (1048 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ) with an initial Coulombic efficiency of 79.84% and good rate capability, better than those of Sn/P@G and Sn/P@CNTs counterparts. The design strategy and synthesis method of Sn/P@G-CNTs can provide an insight on constructing cost-effective sodium-ion batteries.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), characterized with a suitable bandgap, has aroused great interest as a robust and efficient catalyst for solar energy utilization. Herein, we introduce a new strategy to fabricate a three-dimensional (3D) porous g-C3N4 by a facile NaCl-assisted ball-milling strategy. The porous structure-induced advantages, such as a higher specific surface area, more efficient charge separation, and faster electron-transfer efficiency, enable the 3D porous g-C3N4 to achieve impressive properties as a bifunctional catalyst for both photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, the 3D porous g-C3N4 exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 598 μmol h–1 g–1 with an apparent quantum yield of 3.31% at 420 nm for photocatalytic H2 generation, which is much higher than that of the bulk g-C3N4. Simultaneously, the porous g-C3N4 also presents an attractive OER performance with a low onset potential of 1.47 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) in an alkaline electrolyte after rational cobalt-doping. Accordingly, the NaCl-assisted ball-milling strategy paves the way to the rational design of a controllable porous structure.

TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 (TCN) thin film electrode was fabricated via a surface hybridization and dip-coating method. Phenol could be completely mineralized and the pollutants in coking wastewater could be degraded quickly by TCN under simulated solar light and electric field. The characteristics of the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) degradation of phenol-containing coking wastewater were investigated under visible light, ultraviolet light and simulated solar irradiation. The results showed that phenol was degraded completely by the TCN-0.3 with a 1.5 V bias in 1.5 h under simulated solar irradiation with 100% TOC removal rate. 45% of the TOC for the coking wastewater was removed by the TCN-0.3 with a 1.5 V bias under 5.0 h simulated solar irradiation, which was 2.45 and 5.69 times as high as that of the pure TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The surface hybrid heterojunction formed between TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 promotes the migration of the photogenerated electrons and holes and greatly improves the degradation efficiency with applied potential. The significant synergistic effect between the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic oxidation processes in PEC is conducive to electron-hole pair separation, producing the more active substances, such as hydroxyl radicals, and increases the degree of degradation and mineralization of phenolic compounds.

A new type of pure organic 5,10,15,20-tetra (4-hydroxyphenyl) porphyrin (TPPH)/ g -C 3 N 4 nanohybrid was prepared to expand the light absorption range of graphitic carbon nitride materials. The morphology and structure of the composites were systematically characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results show that after the introduction of TPPH, the visible light area optical absorption of the composite sample increased significantly under the noncovalent interaction of TPPH and g -C 3 N 4 , and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and I – T measurements confirmed the improved charge separation efficiency of the sample and showed excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production capacity. Under full spectrum irradiation, the hydrogen production of 1.67% TPPH/ g -C 3 N 4 without adding co-catalyst reached 10.87 mmol ⋅ g − 1 ⋅ h − 1 , about 2.68 times that of pure g -C 3 N 4 (4.06 mmol ⋅ g − 1 ⋅ h − 1 ), which showed effective promotion of the electron transfer between TPPH and g -C 3 N 4 .

The ZrO2 and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) composite photocatalyst has been prepared by calcination process and hydrothermal treatment. The photocatalyst was characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and photoluminescence spectra. The photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the activity of the composite photocatalyst ZrO2/g-C3N4 for photodegradation of MB is much higher than that of either pure g-C3N4 or ZrO2, which is ascribed to the effective electron–hole separation based on the photoluminescence spectra. The •O2 − might be the main active species in MB photodegradation, and the •OH and photogenerated electrons are also partly involved in the process of photocatalytic degradation.

Selective photocatalytic reduction of CO2 has been regarded as one of the most amazing ways for re-using CO2. However, its application is still limited by the low CO2 conversion efficiency. This work developed a novel Pt/In2O3/g-C3N4 multifunctional catalyst, which exhibited high activity and selectivity to HCOOH during photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light irradiation owing to the synergistic effect between photocatalyst, thermocatalyst, and heterojunctions. Both In2O3 and g-C3N4 acted as visible photocatalysts, in which porous g-C3N4 facilitated H2 production from water splitting while the In2O3 nanosheets embedded in g-C3N4 pores favored CO2 fixation and H adsorption onto the Lewis acid sites. Besides, the In2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions could efficiently inhibit the photoelectron–hole recombination, leading to enhanced quantum efficiency. The Pt could act as a co-catalyst in H2 production from photocatalytic water splitting and also accelerated electron transfer to inhibit electron–hole recombination and generated a plasma effect. More importantly, the Pt could activate H atoms and CO2 molecules toward the formation of HCOOH. At normal pressure and room temperature, the TON of HCOOH in CO2 conversion was 63.1 μmol g−1 h−1 and could reach up to 736.3 μmol g−1 h−1 at 40 atm.

In this work, zinc ferrite nanoparticle-modified tubular graphitic carbon nitride (ZnFe 2 O 4 /g-C 3 N 4 , ZFO/CN) was fabricated via an ultrasound-assisted self-assembly approach. The resulting ZFO/TCN composite features an optimized mesoporous structure, characterized by a specific surface area of 71.35 m 2 /g and average pore size of 10.32 nm, with both values intermediate to those of the individual constituents. The composite exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance, degrading 93.5% of tetracycline (TC) within 1 h and 98.7% of rhodamine B (RhB) within 20 min. Moreover, the catalyst maintained high photocatalytic activity after four consecutive recycling experiments, demonstrating excellent reproducibility and stability. Free radical trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) play a major role in the photocatalytic process. The energy band structure and charge transfer pathways of the catalyst were probed by solid-state ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and Mott–Schottky measurements. The separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers were systematically evaluated through transient photocurrent response and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Accordingly, a Z-scheme heterojunction structure was proposed for the ZFO/CN composite, along with a corresponding photocatalytic mechanism. This study offers new insights for the purification and treatment of wastewater.

The construction of semiconductor heterojunctions offers a promising route to markedly enhanced photocatalytic performance. A template-based and electrostatic self-assembly strategy was employed to synthesize the mesoporous g-C₃N₄/MXene photocatalyst, integrating melamine-derived g-C₃N₄ with an MXene secondary phase. MXene layers were inserted between g-C₃N₄ layers to construct a special stacked sandwich structure called a 2D/2D heterostructure. The mesoporous g-C₃N₄/MXene composite delivers markedly superior photoelectrochemical performance to bare mesoporous g-C₃N₄. With 10 wt % MXene, the as-prepared g-C₃N₄/MXene attains its maximum BET surface area of 43.19 m²g⁻¹ and simultaneously delivers the highest photocatalytic activity. After 120 min of visible-light irradiation, it degrades 98.6 % of methyl orange and 97.2 % of rhodamine B, while retaining excellent cyclic stability. The construction of a heterojunction between MXene and mesoporous g-C₃N₄ can significantly reduce the band gap of g-C₃N₄, causing a redshift of the UVvis absorption edge, and effectively improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs during photoresponse. After cyclic testing, the degradation efficiency showed no significant decline, demonstrating excellent catalytic stability. These findings synthesize an economical, versatile, and efficient mesoporous g-C₃N₄/MXene photocatalyst, which can be used to eliminate pollutants in industrial wastewater streams and improve environmental sustainability.

Based on previous operational experience, activated corrosion products account for approximately 80% of the radioactive nuclides during refueling outages. After taking measures to control 58 Co and 60 Co, 110m Ag has emerged as the main contributor to the radiation field in the primary loop. Traditionally, ion exchangers in Chemical and Volume Control Systems (CVCS) are responsible for removing 110m Ag. However, their limited adsorption capacity and poor selectivity result in the generation of substantial solid radioactive waste, which directly increases the treatment cost. To address this challenge, we developed PP-g-GMA@MoS 4 , a MoS 4 2− -functionalized PP nonwoven fabric synthesized via irradiation copolymerization and ion exchange. This adsorbent can stably removes >95% of Ag + across pH 1–5.9. Under simulated conditions (pH = 3), its adsorption capacity reached 623.05 mg/g, outperforming previously documented adsorbents. The adsorption process was better described by the Freundlich isotherm and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. In the presence of an 80-fold excess of competitive ions, the distribution coefficient of Ag + still reached 10 5 mL/g and the separation factors of Ag + relative to each coexisting metal ion (SF Ag,m ) were 10 4 times higher than those of commercial resins. Exposure to 150 kGy of γ-ray irradiation did not significantly affect the adsorption performance of PP-g-GMA@MoS 4 . XPS, TEM, XRD and Raman spectra were conducted to explain the adsorption mechanism. These features—high capacity, outstanding selectivity, excellent irradiation resistance, and low material cost—make PP-g-GMA@MoS 4 a promising candidate for minimizing radioactive waste generation during 110m Ag removal in nuclear power plants.

Membrane fouling critically hinders nanofiltration (NF) for dye wastewater treatment. In this work, FeOOH was in situ loaded onto g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, and the resulting FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 composites were embedded into polyamide (PA) layers via interfacial polymerization to fabricate a self-cleaning NF membrane. The heterojunction configuration of the FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 composites was confirmed by SEM, TEM, and FTIR, and was observed to promote their photocatalytic oxidation under visible light. The incorporation of FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the membranes. Moreover, the intercalation of FeOOH on g-C 3 N 4 endowed the PA layer with additional water channels or interfacial voids, enhancing membrane permeability while ensuring retention performance, achieving a pure water permeance of 18 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and rejections of > 95% for dye molecules and > 90% for divalent salts. Benefiting from the photocatalytic capability of the FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction, the FeOOH/g-C 3 N 4 @PA membrane exhibited improved fouling resistance and high self-cleaning properties after three reuse cycles, maintaining a flux recovery ratio of over 97%, utilizing only a simple photocatalytic degradation operation. This work may provide a new strategy for fabricating antifouling and self-cleaning nanofiltration membranes for water treatment applications.
